This was my first visit here - and a little bit different for me; I've been to vegetarian restaurants before but this was my first vegan/veggie Indian restaurant. That last part may be important as I had this described as vegan only by a number of people - there are definitely a lot of vegetarian options as well. ... and very nice it was, too. A few items worthy of note: They do serve alcohol - not an enormous range, but good enough for most I would think. The menu is *vast* and worthy of inspection online beforehand (some of it is on their website - although not everything is listed) and/or just ask the waiter for recommendations - its worth asking that, anyway :) As I have already tipped - the popadom dips are amazing! We didn;t book, but while you can just turn up, the usual applies here in that it's worth either going a bit early or phoning ahead (there were post-its in the tables so I assume that they will take reservations). As for my actual experience there, very chilled and no rush felt at all from the waiters. I didn't feel like I was being rushed through dinner and the evening as a whole. The starters are quite large - particularly the 'mixed grill sharing platter'. Main courses are not so huge, although there is plenty. I had a banana-based dish (no idea what it was called) which while very nice, I did feel a bit over-banana'd around half way through. Its definitely worth taking advantage of the wide variety of indian breads that they have on offer. I'm marking it down one star as it wasn't quite as tasty as I've had before, and I didn't have that 'I just want to go back tomorrow' feeling - but definitely worth a visit.

I popped into Folk having gone down to Didsbury for a meeting and a change of scene and thinking it…read morewas time to actually do this on all fronts, I plumped for Folk having never actually been before (I know - it's been there forever!) First off I really liked the bar as it's a good, chilled out and welcoming sort of cafe bar. It's a bit like the Odd bars in that it's got random shizzle everywhere but it doesn't seem too over the top which is nice. There's a great selection of beers on tap and as well as all the usual standard crafts and lagers that you get nowadays, there's also a pretty sweet selection of local beers like Ticketybrew on tap. Alas I was driving and had a meeting so beer wasn't my thing on this occasion but I did plump for a tasty Moroccan lamb wrap with salad and flatbread (£9) to keep me going. It was quite nice but 3 days on I'm still unsure whether I enjoyed the taste of the lamb - it was a strange mix and I'm not certain the spice mix was quite right but I saw enough of the fresh ingredients on offer to go back and try more menu items another day - and of course stop for a pint!

Cafe bar with great interior and good food…read more Let's start this review with me saying I'm pretty biased about Folk - it was the location of my first 'date' with Dan. They were amazingly kind and on our first anniversary let me have a menu to put in with his present. It's one of my seriously happy places. They have booths at the back, a fair few tables round the bar and then a good sized outside space with seating too. The menu is good classic with a range of breakfast options served until 4pm. They also have sandwiches, a burger option, soup and a specials board. The food is freshly cooked and really good. Their bar is well stocked with great beers and spirits plus some excellent non alcoholic options their coffee is also fantastic. They also have a selection of cakes which is always changing, check out the blackboard for the options. Today they have sticky toffee, chai, honey & cinnamon, cookies & cream and berry crumble! Great relaxed atmosphere in the day and nice and lively in the evening this is a great place to try if you are in the area.

Best place in Withington for a drink out!!…read more I am a big fan of the decor in Fuel, it is interesting, quirky and unique. The also serve a great combination of real ales and craft beer more typical of the northern quarter or Chorlton. I know they are also a very highly rated vegetarian cafe and so will 100% be coming back here for lunch and/or a coffee.

Another update for Fuel? Another five star rating? Am I boring you, yelpers? I do apologise. If you…read morewish to snooze through the following transmission I fully understand, but should you choose to, then know that you will miss out on OMG SPLAWSOME FTW. For the very first time I was having a main meal at Fuel. A proper dinner. Not a snack, not a smoothie. Why? Everyone I know is a cow-hide biting carnivore and refuses to come to a vegetarian restaurant with me. I know, the sods. Should I come into a windfall, I may well buy new friends, then pay for their plastic surgery so they'll look just like my old friends. I digress. My mother eats meat, but she appreciates a veggie meal just as much as she enjoys some roast chicken. So she was the perfect Fuel guest. On a lazy Saturday noon, we stopped off here before she was due to get her train back to Liverpool, ordered some of their fine coffee (which I have decided is the best coffee in all of Manchester - and they gave us a pot of hot steamed milk with our Americanos which just makes them even brillianter) and perused the menu. After much deliberation and peering over at other diners' breakfasts with a mixture of intrigue and trepidation (those things are HUGE, people), I went for the blackboard special - stuffed peppers with cous cous and a Mexican side salad. My interest was piqued as to what the salad would contain. My mum opted for the 'fish' finger sandwich, and we had their mixed sweet and normal potato wedges between us. So, the 'fish' finger sandwich, huh? You're curious, I can tell. Well, in the immortal words of one Charles Sheen, WINNING! They use breadcrumbed halloumi, served with homemade tartare sauce on a wholemeal granary bun with a delicious side salad. I of course tasted this. Seriously, if you have any doubts, even really big ones, you've got to order it. It works. It works like a dream. My baked stuffed peppers with fruity cous cous and a salad below containing kidney beans, red peppers, spring and red onion was an absolute treat too. Nobody wanted to kiss me afterwards, but that was fine. I didn't need human contact. I had epic salad. Fuel just keeps getting better every time I try something new, and I'm insanely lucky to have it a mere short stroll down the road. I promise I'll never take it for granted.

Is made of an especial cheese, mushrooms, and the seasoning is really tasty! A really good option for those tired of bean or soy burgers that is common everywhere. We also tried their beer (Solitabrau), which is a Pilsner really good and soft. When I went in my friends in a big group I chose the blue nachos, which are purple. It was weird at first, but it's really delicious to eat whilst drinking their beer. It's a nice place to hang out with friends at night, have a good meal and beer. The prices are really honest.

They used to offer burgers, seafood, meat, salads and a special board but now it is just primarily Burgers, hotdogs and two types of steak. I was quite stuck what to have and so eventually chose the satay burger, himself another sort of burger..anyhoo I upgraded to haloumi fries as these were a past favourite along with mac n cheese balls. The service was very slow but friendly. Eventually I asked for a passion fruit margarita himself a flat white. My cocktail was very tart his was a good coffee apparently. Anyway the food arrived and the mac n cheese balls tasted frozen not homemade along with the fries.. I had frozen fries with haloumi sticks on top..I said I had upgraded to haloumi fries these were replaced with my now cold burger and just haloumi sticks which were like rubber. The satay sauce was weak and the burgers..again not fresh.. I left most of my meal. We were partially refunded but it left a bad taste in my mouth..such a shame to see such a decline in quality after coming here since they opened.

The restaurant is much fancier than I expected, and we were seated in a comfortable booth. Following Raam S's excellent review and recommendations, we all opted for a thali which is fantastic value at £8.99. I got the Gujarati thali and it's one of the best things I've eaten this year. All the components were absolutely delicious, the stand outs being okra (which i thought I wasn't going to be like) and the rich aubergine. The sweet was orange but I wasn't sure whether it was carrot. The only thing I didn't like was that most of the thali was served quite cold. I'm not generally that bothered about things being absolutely piping hot, but it would be better if it were heated properly. We got some other dishes too, the mysori dosa was extremely good (as also recommended by Raam) although as Emily said we weren't sure exactly what to do with the sauce - will have to ask next time! The other two things we tried we weren't so keen on (paneer and doughnuts). Basically I would say stick to the thali and the dosa. I would definitely recommend this place and it's worth the trip.

In my last review I told you we were planning to go there. Guess what! :D…read more We ordered a Mysore Masala Dosa and the Dhokla. I will leave the dhokla aside by saying it was very good and move on to the Mysore Masala Dosa. There are variations on the dosa theme and masala dosa is one of those variants. However the way in which this is prepared in different parts in South India is different. Madras and Mysore refer to what the states were called all those centuries ago as opposed to the cities that they are now. For example if you were to visit Chennai (Madras), you will get a simple potato based masala inside the dosa. Whereas in Mysore region, where I come from, the inner surface of the dosa is smeared with a sweet/spicy onion chutney before the spicy potato masala gets filled in it. Apologies if the history/geography lesson dragged on for a bit. So, the dosa was the right colour throughout (starting with a slightly dark tinge of brown at the centre and gradually fading into beige as you go radiallly outward), had pretty decent texture, (crispier towards the circumference and softer as you come radially inward) and tasted just about spot-on. It wasn't very greasy either. I also got the onion chutney with it, which was yum! The potato masala was generous in terms of quantity and flavoursome. It took me back home! The winner on the night however was the Punjabi thali that my wife ordered. Thali is a little like a tapas and a little like our sunday roast, but nothing like either. In Hindi and most other Indian languages, the word thali simply means a plate. The thali dish is essentially a reasonably big plate with about anywhere between 5-8 cups, some of which contain a curry, one has yougurt/curd one with buttermilk and one with dal usually. One usually gets a decent portion of rice or a roti, which is the main dish. The individual items on the thali were all well prepared and delicious. The portions were generous and very filling too. Definitely worth a recommendation. As with everywhere else, I sincerely hope they continue to maintain their excellence.

Best café in Manchester?…read more How did it take me so long to visit Trove? Despite hearing nothing but glowing reviews for this café it was only on Saturday that I remembered to get off the train to Manchester 1 stop early and visit. Its safe to say Trove is not the typical café you would expect to find on the A6 in Levenshulme, the interior reminds me of Berlin cafes with white walls and a lot of wood! The place is decorated with original stoneware plates and is cosy enough to relax with a coffee and some of the great magazines stocked. The menu has a seasonal focus along with daily specials. I ordered the sourdough hotcakes with Ricotta and date puree and my dining companion went for brie and bacon sandwich on wholemeal sourdough. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and presented beautifully on trove stoneware plates. As other reviewers have commented the menu is awash with different flavours and offers something slightly more exciting than simply poached eggs on toast- my hotcakes were served with flower petals! The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu to help with recommendations. Finally when we came to pay the bill our food plus drinks (flat white and lemon cordial) came in at £13!
