Halloumi fish finger sarnie
Oonagh C.

Fuel me up! This place is great. A veggie cafe/bar serving really tasty food in a cute and quirky cafe. There's also music nights put on upstairs. I had a halloumi 'fish finger' sandwich which was really tasty. It came with some salad and some excellent hand cut chips. I was a happy woman. My friend got a big bowl of regular and sweet potato chips with a houmous dip and sweet chilli dip. Again, excellent. I found the food good value and the booze about standard. A bottle of Rekorderlig is £3.80. My halloumi and chips was £5.50. They also do a really good (but hard) pub quiz on Wednesday with free chips!

I was surprised when I was first introduced to this venue in Withington - it would certainly not be out of place in Chorlton or the Northern Quarter. But the fact that I, like Sam, would endure a bus ride out of town to visit Fuel certainly says something about it. I've been to a couple of live music events here, and I've never been disappointed. Each time there was a great atmosphere - entry was free, beer was plentiful, the upstairs room was packed full of cool types and the music was awesome and importantly at a volume where the ability to lip-read friends' drink orders is not necessary. After reading these reviews I feel there is so much I'm yet to experience - Oreo milkshakes, sweet potato wedges? Yes please! Thank you fellow Yelpers for your hearty recommendations - a re-visitation to Fuel is now on my agenda.

Does what is says on the tin and nothing more really. A affordable student aimed cafe/take away in a student rich area. Turn up refuel, leave. No expectations- no disappointments.

Fuel Cafe bar is a great place for uni students and young professionals to hang out and do little more than watch the world go by and chit chat the afternoon evening away- sound fantastic to me. This is definitely a place for young chicks and dudes to relax and unwind. The menu is by no means extensive but what they do serve is good - all that matters in the end. I would definitely recommend this place for a great cup of coffee or as a hang over cure/hangout. Really decently priced- what more could you want!

The great thing about the Manchester Street Markets is a) they take place in my neighbourhood…read more(they're all South Manchester suburb-based), and b) you can always get something a little different at each of them. After checking out Northenden's offering I was delighted to see the familiar faces of The Butterfly Cupcakery and I recognised the awesome Mint & Garlic who I'd met previously at one of the Farmers Markets at Piccadilly Gardens. So what else to do at such a gorgeous market but shop? There were tasty-smelling fresh soups, a butcher and a fishmonger, preserves and cheeses as well as cakes, and as well as this you can get some bags, gifts and suchlike. Bex and I treated ourselves to a choccy brownie and a slab of carrot cake respectively from Butterfly, then I did a wee bit of shopping from Mint & Garlic next door. My swag included three large, delightfully turquoise duck eggs (I've never had duck eggs before and am looking forward to making them into a quiche this week!), a punnet of strawberries that smelled incredible and tasted even better, a sweet potato whereby I was advised that you should always go for the long, thin ones as they harbour the most sweetness, and a vine of plum tomatoes whose rich depth of flavour made for brilliant roasting. There's a really lovely vibe to Copson Street so early on a Saturday morning, and a great eclectic mix of student types, young professionals and locals. I'm definitely going to be coming back here for some more grocery shopping, I was muchly impressed.

However, all the stall are proper artisan, local flavour stuff, which puts this little capsule market ahead of some of the grosser and commercialised elements of the Christmas Markets, for example. It's OK, but there aren't really enough stalls at this one to make it worth a special trip. So more of a market for the Withington locals, unless you have become hooked on the goods from one of the stalls and need your weekly fix. And there are definitely worse things addicted to than Dough-It-Yourself artisan pizza bases, Traditionally Cheesy artisan cheeses (with vegetarian cheeses clearly marked), Trove Foods baked goods and jams and a few others. Plus at least one Withington community organisation stall, which I think I would find pleasantly mumsy if I was a student living in the area! :-) But if you only make one visit in the month to the south Manchester street market circuit, then Chorlton on the third Saturday is your best bet. Disclaimer: Be aware that street markets and street food are undergoing something of a revival, and that an obvious next step for Manchester markets would be for more of the stallholders who show at the Chorlton and other markets to roll up to Withington for one day in the month. So - keep an eye on things, and also 'Be the change you want to see in the world' and all that, if you are a market fan!

Let's face it, for those living in Withington, your immediate choices for fruit are Somerfield (not great), One Stop (really, really, really not great) and Withington Fruit & Veg. Which is actually great. It's a shop of two halves, really. One one hand, it's a straight-up fruit and veg shop. selling all the usuals, loose, by the pound, cheaply. And very fresh. On the other hand, it's an Indian food store, which means you can grab big bags of spices, authentic curry pastes and all the different Rubicon flavours. It also means they stock an alarmingly wide range of fresh chillis, including the scotch bonnet chilli. Beware the scotch bonnet; it looks like a tiny bell pepper, but it is as fiery as all hell! Still, a great addition to a curry, and as everything here is charged by weight, one (more than enough for a hot Madras curry) will set you back about 5p! As well as stunningly fresh fruit and veg, and a great range of Indian foods, there's a good range of Jamaican ingredients such as plantain, dried salted fish and jerk seasonings. Great for if you fancy trying something new. The staff here are ridiculously helpful, and they always have a laugh with the regulars. The shop itself, despite being small and family-run, has its own bag-for-life, which I think is a great way of getting their brand out there, and also much better for fruit and veg than plastic bags. Speaking of, although they offer those polythene bags to put your purchases into for weighing, they're more than happy to weigh your stuff without bags, which cuts down on wastage and sits a little easier on the conscience. OH, and one time I was shopping there and I found a £2 coin in the carrots, and I told the shopkeeper and he smiled at me and said "keep it, it is the Universe's reward for your honesty!"

Another is putting up shelves and building Ikea desks... household new-home silliness. The third is Robert Sheehan. Enough said. The fourth is shopping local. As I'm a huge advocate - do you know any huge advocates? Okay, that's the 'Big Rug Sale' complex (how big *are* the rugs?), I'm not exactly a huge person - I'm very *into* my independent local businesses when it comes to coffee shops and eateries, I really feel I should carry this attitude through to most of my grocery shopping. At least to the fresh produce bit anyway. Then aren't I just a lucky duck that I live round the corner from this fruit and veg store? But wait, this isn't just a fruit and veg store, and it isn't an M&S fruit and veg store either... As Rebecca D has mentioned, it's also an ethnic food shop. Kind of like a mini Worldwide Foods, you can pick up some awesome ingredients in here, and it happens to have the cheapest halloumi I've ever seen. Seriously, they jack the price up so much in the supermarkets! Just pop here instead (they have the same brand in Worldwide Foods too). Shopping local rocks, and Copson Street is a revelation. I've so much yet to explore here, but in the meantime, sure - get your bits and bobs from the Co-op opposite but please do support this indie and stock up on your fresh ingredients here, you shan't regret it.

The two butchers in Withington sell meat so much cheaper than do the local supermarkets, and so much higher quality as well. What this does have over the other butcher, is a better selection of cold meats. Great hams, some good salamis and other cold meats are often on a deal. They do a good barbeque selection as well. As none of the stuff is pre-packed, you can get the quantity you want so even if its just a couple of rashers for a bacon sarnie or a few sausages you're after, then the place will do it, and it'll be remarkably cheap. Sometimes they have some exciting sausages in as well, so keep an eye out for those. If you live near Withington, definitely worth checking out.

As I walked past Robinson's every day, it was quite exciting, I thought, to buy fresh meat every day, probably farmed locally. Ooh, I thought, I'm so good and nice and kind to the earth. Or something. Anyway, my experience at Robinson's was not the feelgood bacon-buying trip I imagined. First off, the shop positively reeks of bleach, which worries me as the meat is largely uncovered in the big fridges, and I fear fumes. Secondly, the self-serve fridge near the door is full of shrink-wrapped bacon and whathaveyou, which all looks a bit anaemic and sub-Somerfield in quality. The final nail in the coffin, however, has to be the chicken I bought there once. Upon getting it home and unwrapping it, I was overpowered with the stench of positively rotten meat. As I held my nose and suppressed the vom reflex, I saw that the meat had a greenish tinge. GROSS! I am absolutely 100% certain that the butcher *must* have known this meat was off. How could he *not*? The stuff stank!!! Obviously, I never returned (and I also couldn't bring myself to eat chicken for a month afterwards). There are many things I forgive in this world, but selling putrid chicken, I will not forgive!

There are a few greetings cards which is useful. What is very not useful in One Stop is how the newspapers and magazines are at entirely different end of the shop. I didn't like this, One Stop, and it made finding my Guardian hard. I panicked suddenly, and thought "Oh! Do they only sell Mizz and Heat and stuff but not the Guardian?" But then it was ok, and I realised that the papers were back near the door. Then I tried to pay for my paper and the nice girl behind the counter was having a nightmare restocking the scratch cards which were falling about all over the place, meaning that it took ages to get served. All of this for a Guardian.

"They…read moreonly have frozen mince, and NO potatoes!" hissed the boyf once, when I'd sent him out to get ingredients for hungover shepherds' pie, and all the other shops were closed. Y'see, that's the only time anyone's likely to go to One Stop, when Somerfield and the butchers and the fruit and veg shop are allll closed. Because their name is a lie. Yes, it's a one-stop-shop for all things cheap-boozy, but in all other areas it fails miserably. A word, then, about the booze. It is OK. They often have decent deals on booze, one of which is a nice wine, Ogio, which is around £9, but One Stop occasionally sell it for £4. It's not exactly exclusive, as you can get it in other shops, but I've never known anywhere put it on offer as much as One Stop. The big cardboard boxes of beer (crate? case?) are also usually on offer for around £8. Good for BBQs or, y'know, stocking up the fridge. While the food section is appalling, the household essentials section is just that, essential. Bog roll, washing up liquid, cat litter. It's usually well-stocked and all quite reasonable value. In short, One Stop is a no-no unless you're desperate, but then, I guess, it is a bit of a saviour. Just make sure if you want to make a hungover shepherds' pie, to buy the ingredients the day before...

Their focus on the Lebanese/Arab niche also makes this a worthwhile destination for the serious foodie, both for the range of unique goods and also the strong Arab cultural vibe to welcome and inspire you. When I visited, it was staffed by a timid, veiled Arab girl, for whom my Scottish accent and loud personality were just too much! No problem, this gave me a chance of some banter with the whiskery main man, who came out from behind his halal butcher's counter where he had been busy spicing meats. I walked out with a dozen items - saffron, za'atar, rosepetal jam, date syrup, dolmades. Here you have not one, but half a dozen choices of each of za'atar, tahini, dolmades, vine leaves, floral waters. A can of dolmades is a easy way to add another mezze to your Arab feast. Many of the other items combine to provide a whole palette of mild but interesting flavours unique to the region, which I would recommend as having a broad appeal to most palates. They stock the widely-available El-Ammar khoubz wraps, which seems to be the biggest Arab bakery in Manchester, and very fresh bread too since they are local. I had already planned on lunch in Rusholme, but as it was getting late I decided to have dessert in advance - a takeaway selection of Lebanese date rolls, coconut slice and others, all very nourishing and energising when eaten in moderation whilst waiting at the bus stop! It is less of a trek than you might think to get out there, easily reached on the frequent 50 bus service from Parrs Wood, itself easily accessible from the Oxford Road corridor. Other than these Lebanese delis, I'm not sure that Burnage is much of a destination although I have an idea there are some OK restaurants - message me if you can recommend any! However, for Lebanese restaurants and takeaways, Rusholme is the main concentration.
