Sandra's Next Generation is a well-known soul food restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut, known for its classic dishes such as fried chicken, catfish, smothered pork chops, mac and cheese, and collard greens. Although I don't typically dine out for soul food, my water was shut off due to maintenance on the outside pipes. Since it was Sunday and I usually cook Sunday dinner, I chose to visit Sandra's after hearing such high praise and wanting to try their menu. Upon arrival, I realized it doesn't particularly stand out, but there is a menu outside to review before entering. The restaurant is small, predominantly a takeout spot. I ordered the Pork Chop dinner, with sides of Collard Greens and Macaroni and Cheese. My son had the Ribs with Macaroni and Cheese and Rice, and my daughter selected the Fried Chicken, Macaroni and Cheese, and Collard Greens. I also picked up a side of Sweet Potatoes and Fried Fish. The Fried Fish was underwhelming in flavor, with a slimy breading. I prefer my fish fried until very crispy, and although it looked crispy, it needed a bit more time. The Sweet Potatoes were good but could benefit from a touch more sweetness. When I opened my Pork Chop dinner, I was surprised to find only one pork chop, especially given that the dinner costs twenty dollars and pork is typically an affordable meat. I would expect two pork chops for that price. The Mac and Cheese was decent--cooked well but lacking the deep, savory richness I seek. The Collard Greens, however, were excellent; cooked perfectly and absorbed the rich flavors of their broth and seasonings. My children found the food to be okay, rating it around 2.5 to 3 stars. There is also a refrigerator with desserts and homemade juice drinks. Overall, the staff and environment were friendly.
So my visit here tonight has a story that would be a bit too long to include in a review, but what I will let you know here is that I first came across this business that literal day before the historic floods of August 18th, 2024 at a food truck festival in downtown New Haven. Ever since that day and the subsequent floods, I've been wanting to give SNG a proper visit and give a proper review. Fast forward to July 22, 2026 in Hartford and the walk I made to the ice cream right on the same street as the state capitol building. When I reviewed that place, I had to look back at my old reviews and found I had had those guys before at the Hartford Taste Festival of 2025. At that moment, something clicked. Didn't I first find about Sandra's this exact same way? I knew my job had a sponsor event the Saturday of that following week (now today). I came to a revelation. THIS was the night I had to go! I NEEDED to get to Sandra's and I needed to do this now! Upon arrival, the location is very unassuming. It has such a huge following, yet one can easily pass by this place if they don't know what they're looking for. Coming inside, I had found it to be a bit of a learning curve to even find a menu, let alone order. Turns out, you have to go outside and look at the menus outside to make a decision, something I am definitely not used to. Not a bad thing, but just something to keep in mind. After you order, you are given a number, and then you wait outside until they text you that your order is ready so you can go pay. What is a plus here is that I got my food in a considering less than the amount of time I was promised. It was maybe about 10 minutes after I ordered when it was ready when they I was told it would be ready in 20. Now, back at that fateful festival, I did have the fried chicken, the Mac and cheese, and candied yams. Now, let it be know that I NEVER eat yams. I just never felt the need to have those in my life. That being said, I do remember being pleasantly surprised by how they tasted. That night was a great lesson in getting through your dinner before going to have dessert in a way that it didn't feel like I had to have a parent tell me to do exactly that. I remember liking the dinner overall, but not being wowed enough to really give it 5 stars if it were a proper review. Maybe a 3.5 or 4. Tonight, the Mac and cheese makes its return, this time with string beans, blackened shrimp, and BBQ Pork Ribs. Oh, and I nabbed this neat container of fruit punch because it was so humid it was like Connecticut just moved South to Northern Florida. Yeah, we'll go with that. Between the 2 Mac and cheese's, I would say tonight's edition was better than what I had at the festival. The string beans are a good vegetable side that definitely has an authentic Southern taste to it. The blackened shrimp is on top of a small bed of brown rice and beans. You do need to take the tails off each the shrimp, but if you know how to eat shrimp, shouldn't be an issue whatsoever. The rice and beans are cooked pretty too might I add. And the ribs. Oh my GOD the ribs! Most times in CT you have to go to a true BBQ spot to get good ribs. But they did well with this rib. Fell off the bone, and the BBQ sauce had a nice kick to it without being overpowering. It didn't feel too skimpy like the ones I had from that Dominican spot I went to last week. The authentic, homemade soul food is worth the hype. Speaking of the hype... So when I first read reviews of Sandra's and ironed through who was reviewing this place, I did not have a good first impression. It was as if because of some of the people who rave about the food, they intimidated me away from making my visit here for a while without saying a word. What if I went, didn't have a good experience, leave a bad review, and then I end up summoning an angry mob chanting to have my head on a spike? It was a real thought that went my head at one point in time when thinking about going there. But still, I needed to come here, and now that I've been, I can say I'm glad that I did. Sandra's serves soul food that they have every right to be proud of. It's not a place I can come to often, but I would be happy to come here again to try more of their food items, especially now that my first memories of Sandra's are now completely behind me.
Our food was fresh and delicious. The quality reminds me of the time I lived in Savannah, Georgia and there were homemade spots everywhere run by people who had been cooking for generations. We tried a few new items and look forward to having them again soon . There is off the street parking and only outdoor eating area available.
So I moved to Connecticut very recently and honestly have had trouble finding good food compared to where I am from. I say that to say...Sandra's is hands down the best food I have had anywhere since moving here. Not the best soul food, the best food period. And it's honestly some of the best soul food I've ever had. Everything is delicious! I love so much about this place. I love that they give you several options for meals, such as 1 entree with 2 sides; 2 entrees with 2 sides; 1 entree with 4 sides, etc. Most restaurants only give you the choice of 1 entree with 2 sides but Sandra's doing it like this really allows you to try multiple dishes and mix and match depending on how hungry you are. Only thing to keep in mind is if you order a combo plate (2 entrees with 2 sides) the entrees are half portions. I also love how many options there are for entrees, sides, desserts & drinks! The menu is very extensive there's something for everyone including lots of vegan options. There are so many possible combinations that you could eat a different meal here everyday. And that's not even including their daily specials! I learned about Sandra's from a cooking demonstration she did onsite at my job. I'm so glad I went to that work event bc I never would've known about Sandra's, it wasn't on my radar at all. I like it so much I literally went two days in a row. Prices are also super reasonable for the amount of food you get and quality! For comparison, I recently went to a bbq restaurant (I won't say their name here but you can check out my review on them) that charged $20 for only 1 entree and 1 SMALL side and the food wasn't even good. So far I have tried the: vegan mac n cheese, regular mac n cheese, fried catfish, smothered dark meat chicken, beef ribs, turkey chopped bbq, collard greens, yams, sweet potato pie, and the blue lemonade. My favorite entree I've tried so far are the beef ribs. So tender and sticky sweet! Highly recommend these. My fave sides are the yams and collards and shockingly I think I actually like the vegan mac more the regular. All dinners come with cornbread. Wasn't a fan of the cornbread but others in my family liked it and I really appreciate that it's included. I would order everything again except the fried catfish, wasn't a fan of that. There are still so many dishes I want to try. I can see myself eating here several times a month to try everything. Big back, big back here I come thanks to Sandra's! I cannot recommend it here enough!
Sandra has always treated me like family, and the rest of the family there are the same. However, when I order through the Internet, which is DoorDash, I call to make sure I get what I need, like spoons and cornbread. I don't receive them, even though I was supposed to get a full meal. I'm upset this time because I paid for cornbread and didn't get it. That's why I'm reaching out online because I don't know who's responsible for the mistake. I also wonder if it's something personal or if there's a reason behind it when I called to ask for extra things like juice for my corn. I hope we can work it out and get everything sorted, because right now it feels a little personal.
Smothered pork chops with 4 sides; Mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and double macaroni and cheese. Oh and let me not forget the cornbread. I wanted potato salad but they had run out, unfortunately and surprisingly since it was 12p. The food was delicious as always. I recommend and will be returning.
I have been excited about checking out Sandra's after seeing a TikTok and reading some of the reviews. I caught Metro North from Grand Central and after the 2+ hour ride that's when I found out that they had no seating, which that is my fault for not researching. I ordered online and waited a hour and 13 mins for my food. The service was great. The owner was very friendly as well as the other staff. As I was waiting the gospel music was playing and it was nice. Once I got my food. I immediately gave it a try because I didn't want it cold or reheated for my review. The soul food empanadas with chicken were pretty good I would give them a solid 7 out of 10. The smothered chicken was very salty in my opinion. I would rate it a 5 out of 10, and the Mac & cheese tasted like boxed velveeta which I would rate a 4/10. I'm disappointed at how over hyped it seem. Not pictured was my order of fried fish and it was bland with no seasoning. The lemon on the side did no justice. I could've honestly caught it at a bad time because it was a Sunday and very busy, but I'm definitely not interested in going back.
I visited this place for the reviews. Plus, I was missing the soul food from Chicago, and from my own stove. The outside seating area is nice! Inside, it's your standard soul food to go spot. Great staff! As reviews state, the people that work here are a pleasure. Place your order and get a text when it's ready! The prices are not bad. My order included the fried catfish with 4 sides. While the sweet potatoes had the best flavor, these should have been cooked a bit more. Overall, the food did need more depth to the flavor. The Mac & Cheese had a chalky texture, lacking cheese. The fish was not cooked in hot enough grease. It was not crisp. Nothing was nasty, but nothing stood out. You be the judge yourself.
Would've gone 3 1/2 stars if available. Came here a few years ago and it was really good. This time - not so much. They woman taking our order was great - the rest of the staff wasn't. Food wasn't as good as I remembered. Not sure if I'd come back if/when in the area.
We tried to order online, but because our bill would've been more than $75 so we had to go in to order. We were waited on quickly, but had probably about a 30 minute wait for our food. We sat outside in their cute little seating area. Hennessy fried Salmon 10/10 mac and cheese 9/10 kale greens 8/10 rice wasn't good it was hard. I love kale. I've never had them this style so they were different, but they were still good. Also, I got their peach cobbler 11/10 and mango lemonade. Would definitely return !
I have two words for you: Soul Roll. What a simple yet genius idea to fill egg roll wrapping with the deliciousness of soul food, and I got mine with BBQ chopped turkey. It's pure magic. I got the Hennessy wings lunch combo with mac & cheese and yams. Although I didn't taste Hennessy at all, the wings were INCREDIBLE. They're big, sweet, and sticky. The sides were also fine. The reason this isn't a 5 star review is because of the "fried chicken sandwich" I ordered. They gave me two chicken wings and two slices of bread. That is NOT a sandwich. Since it was my first time trying Sandra's I wanted to get a variety of options so I got fried chicken sandwich, which you would think is different than chicken wings. Nope...I ended up with two different chicken wing orders. Now, since me having ordered this, I've learned many southern restaurants will offer sandwiches in this manner. I wouldn't have minded if it was advertised that way on the menu. Fried chicken sandwiches have been a craze in the last few years so I was expecting an actual sandwich in-line with what everyone else is doing and not just two chicken wings and bread. To be fair, the chick was incredible, I just feel a bit misled. I will definitely be back!
My sweet tooth was in overdrive on Sunday so I decided to order some dessert and a side of mac & cheese. I already had ample leftovers at home so I bypassed on dinner, although I have had their dinner in the past and it is amazing. I grew up a couple of blocks away from Sandra's. The food has always been A1. I decided to get a slice of their banana, pudding cake and cheesecake with the strawberry sauce. Initially, I wanted banana pudding, but I guess they were sold out. The layers in between the cake had a very pronounced banana flavor, which was great. So I'm definitely interested in going back to get some actual banana pudding once it's available. The cheesecake was also delicious. The graham cracker crust, cheesecake consistency, and light accent of strawberry sauce came together very well. A must try. If you ever want some mac & cheese, but do not want to make an entire dish, I highly recommend getting a side serving. But, if you're hungry, opt for a full meal. Their combos are amazing. You can sample multiple meat options with various sides. A neighborhood staple but if you do not live close by definitely worth the drive or the delivery service fee.
The salmon is literally my favorite. This was my first time having the vegan Mac it was really good. The collard greens were good but were a little sweet. Only thing is it is very expensive, this meal cost me $32. Definitely not something I'm willing to spend every weekend but worth every dime lol. The service is good, they are pretty fast. The restaurant does not have indoor seating, however they do have outdoor seating since it is more hot outside. However I did not eat outside because it was way to hot. Overall I love Sandra's !

*THEY DO NOT OFFER FREE DESSERTS * My husband and I saw this restaurant on tik tok and decided we wanted to go here after our wedding as we both LOVE soul food. He was craving oxtail and I salmon. We did not know they didn't serve oxtail on Wednesday which was a bummer so he opted for fried chicken and i for the jerk salmon. My husband loved his fried chicken ! My salmon was pretty good just a little bit on the salty side. The Mac and cheese was amazing and so was the collard greens. The candied yams were really good just cold. My fiancé really liked the potato salad but it was personally not my cup of tea. Lemonade was perfect ! Lastly the oxtail empanadas were soooo good except that I almost broke a tooth because there was a bone in mine. I would recommend Sandra's as the workers are very kind (thank you to the one who took our order and her patience as we took a while to decide. ) also the food was exceptional and I would like to try some of their other foods ! read more

I was so excited to be there that the shock of no sit down didn't even matter! Each person was friendly and ready to help! I had a lot of questions and she answered them all and we got my order just right!! The chicken wings were amazing and barely Made it to the crib for the picture! I will be back! read more
Ooooooh weeeee! Sandra's will have you laid up on the street, in your car, in your driveway until the day after!! Since pivoting to takeout, we haven't been to Sandra's since the pandemic. But whew, they have added new items that have made our toes curl! TBH, we Shar'wyn's Church Plate is still our go to-it's the best option that allows you a choice of protein paired with 4 sides-YES!! 4 SIDES!!! We decided to roll with fried chicken with Mac n cheese, collard greens, yams and potato salad! They've changed the game with Soul Rolls (we got BBQ chicken) and Empanadas (The Oxtail ones are WILD)!! We also had the pleasure of trying their mango lemonade-why is the not sold in jugs? The infusion of mint totally changes the flavor profile. And the cheesecake is just...over the top! And in a good way! Sandra's continues to be a staple of New Haven and rightfully so. But why can't they open up in the Hartford area and shut.it.down???? Pretty please????? read more
OMG THE FOOD HERE IS SO DELICIOUS!!!! First time having the food here and the owner Sandra was so friendly and attentive. If you are ever in Hartford make your way over here. The wait was perfect because the food was done fresh! The owner made sure we were satisfied. Definitely coming back when I come into town read more

I have been eating here for a few years. The more they expanded the worse the food has become. I asked about the salmon and no one knew if it was wild caught or farm raised which is important to many. Candied yams was hard, not candied, the rice was hard and old and the plantain was undercooked. My friend had the fried chicken was not good. The service was ok but the cooking has suffered and is getting worse. I threw away half of the food we bought. Looking for another place to eat moving forward. Disappointed long time customer read more

The best soul food I've ever had. I mean I haven't had much from different places yet, but Sandra's sets the bar super high from here on out! Her menu is right to the point, on the front window! I love the seating outside because it's very cute pergola so you're not basting in the sun or stuck in the rain. I love the ordering system, it's very organized. I had ordered Shandrea's combo plate with the bbq pork ribs and baked chicken, collard greens and candied yams as the sides! Mmmm finger lickin good! And I love that it comes with a piece of yummy cornbread. Everything tasted so juicy and succulent! Nothing was dry! I love her sweet tea. I was introduced to Sandra through a friend years ago with whom I did a network marketing business with and just never tried her restaurant. Her and her family are a very hard working family and she puts her whole heart into her business and food! It truly shows. If you have been curious about this place, make the stop and try it! You will not be disappointed for sure! read more

Thank you Lana, for your review. We appreciate your business.
Outside seating was pleasant. Pretty alleyway seating with greenery. Staff friendly. Greeted by Shandra today. She's always so friendly. They didn't honor the free dessert that was on Yelp's Check in. Let's get to the most important.... The FOOD. 1st order: Shante's Plate (1 entree and 2 sides) Jerk Chicken, Collard Greens, & Mac N Cheese, (Caribbean Rice was added to my order by accident and charged extra $ but I didn't realize until my food came out). -----The Jerk I'd give it 3 out of 10. It was VERY dry. I had to takE multiple sips of my soda to wash that sucka down. This wasn't my favorite. The flavor of the sauce was ok. I guess it's different from Jamaican jerk (which is what I'm use to). ----- Collard Greens: I'd give this 3 out of 10. Although this was cooked well; not over done not under done, it just didn't hit me with flavor as I've had before. ----- Mac N Cheese: 8 out of 10. CREAMY, warm & gooey! This was my favorite! It made me want to smack somethin'. I did a little chair dance while savoring each bite. Talk about COMFORT FOOD. ----- Corn Bread: 4 out of 10. This is just like any type of cornbread I've had... nothing too memorable. ----- Caribbean Rice: 8 out of 10. Yes! This was bursting with flavor and sets me to a Caribbean vibe if I closed my eyes I can imagine myself there. 2nd Order: Shante's Plate: Pork Ribs, Caribbean Rice, sweet plantains. It looked good. I don't know how this tasted. Given portion size for this plate was small. Looked like they were running out of rice. 3rd Order: Wings. Old Bay Seasoning. 9.5 out of 10. Ok.... Now what?! First bite into this.... Wait let me rewind a bit. The portion is HUGE! You get the whole wing counted as one (flat & drum). It didn't look like much seasoning if at all. The bite into it was extra juicy and you do taste the old bay but it wasn't much seasoning on it (in my preference it was fine). It was so good, I wish I got this with my 2 sides instead of the Jerk. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND their wings!!!! I think I found my new spot for wings! 4th order: sweet potato cornbread. 6 out of 10. Warm, soft, moist, I asked for butter which they put on and warmed up for me. It's rich and sweet. If you have a sweet tooth this is it. 5th order: Mango Lemonade: 7 out of 10. sweet and tangy. Good balance, cold, refreshing. read more

This is my favorite place in New Haven. Every meal I had from here was excellent. The sweet potato pie is something that should not be missed. I didn't get sweet potato pie this time, but got sweet potato cheesecake pie. That was also excellent. Church's place is one thing, I always go for. Candied yams, mac and cheese, fried plantains and carribean rice are my favorite sides. I never liked grits in my life. This time I had shrimp and grits from here, and I loved it. Mint lemonade was good as well. read more
I truly love soul food. Connecticut has a few amazing restaurants, but sometimes it's hard to find a hardy comfort soul food restaurant. I would highly recommend calling Sandra's before hand. I waited about 45 minutes before my order was ready, but boyyyy it was worth the wait. When I looked at the Turkey bbq I was looking for the extra bbq sauce. After my first bite I realized it didn't need ANYTHING. It was savory, and seasoned well. I can honestly say that it was the best Turkey BBQ that I have ever hard. The Mac, and yams were also delicious. I would definitely go back again. And it's also a black business. read more

Ok! So - the atmosphere is extremely family oriented. The staff are pleasant and super helpful! (Kelly had me cracking up!) The service was pretty swift - even though my order had to be dropped. (catfish.) The Pineapple Hennessy pound cake was probably my favorite experience. Followed by the catfish. I am a big sides eater - but I wasn't over the moon about these sides. The candied yams were good! Sweet - but not too sweet. The baked mac and cheese wasn't your mommas "baked" - however, given the restaurant and the quantity of ppl ordering non-stop, the Quality was decent. It was cheesy and flavorful. Cabbage was pretty good too. I absolutely think you need to try the desserts if you're going! (I also saw everyone and their momma walking out with a tea - so maybe I'll get that next time!) lol. read more

Absolutely the best place to get soul food in New Haven. The food is so good. Hands down the best. I can't say that enough. Seasoned, fresh and savory. My first time there was because of my friend who works there, Miss Sarina. She's very kind, and served me and my best friend when we went. She told us to go after I saw her online on Sandra's Next Generation Instagram page. She told us she does do the cakes! That are very good by the way. The drink portions are more than enough. The teas/punch/juices are phenomenal. Inside is small, but it's just meant for pick up, curbside or if you decide to sit outside. Now about the food, everything there is a must. Corn bread and sweet potato corn bread are delicious. I myself don't like sweet potatoes but that changed my mind. The Soul Rolls are out of this world, never had something like that. They give a sauce and 2 plaintains when you order one. Macaroni & Cheese, collard greens, wings, they have it all. The most important thing I would like to say is, the portions of one meal are big enough to share with a friend. If you're in the New Haven area or from there definitely take some time to stop by and eat. Can't wait to go there again this October. Hope to take a picture with Sandra herself read more

Three friends and I stopped in for a Friday night dinner at prime dinner time. The crowd kept coming throughout our visit, though most customers were doing takeaway. The people working here were really nice and welcoming to everyone; we even got a personal "hello" from one of the main owners. So many delicious things to choose from! There are about 10 proteins to choose from and just as many sides. Luckily, I was able to try a lot of the different options based on what we all ordered. First, a basket of delicious cornbread and pumpkin cornbread was brought to our table. We all agreed that the standard cornbread was stellar, but the pumpkin cornbread was particularly amazing. Nice touch! Our dishes were really good. The Shandrea's Plate gives you the option of having two proteins, but I would have expected more meat for the price point. The jerk chicken, while tasty, was just a few pieces, and the BBQ pork ribs, which were so juicy, only included two ribs as part of this option. Shante's plate was a good option for me (one protein and two sides). The fried chicken was nice without being too greasy, and I could eat the fried okra for days. (It's healthy, right?) My friend's sweat potato fries had a nice texture and weren't salty. The sweet tea comes in a huge container! You can definitely share with someone. So glad I was able to check out this New Haven staple, and I look forward to coming back. read more
Top of the list for a great meal ! Sandras still is winning after being open for 20 plus yrs feeding families with good cooking . During covid they have a takeout/pickup ordering online or phone easy process that you give your order number at the door after your confirmation that its ready. A guard or employee will grab your bag and your on your way home . They have a full menu of soul food ,expanding eggroll/empanadas such as oxtail, mac & yams ,jerked flavors and more . The dinners have names to make it easy to order smothered chops, fried/baked chicken, seafood, turkey ,wings and more with many sides to choose from like collard greens, cabbage, mac n cheese , fries., rice and bean to say a few. Deviled eggs here are filled with Lobster, shrimp ,chicken or turkey . The cornbread is thick and scrumptious and many desserts to choose from or order a full pie or cake for holidays coming up. read more

I spent a short period of time in Hamden/New Haven this summer and it was a struggle to find Black-owned restaurants nearby. Fortunately, my friends and I stumbled across Sandra's on a Friday evening and we were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Cajun wings with Caribbean rice and fried plantains. However, when I got home and unpacked my food, I noticed that the plantains were missing. I'm not sure why but I wish they would've let me pick another side (which is why I give 4/5 stars), but they were considerate enough to give me extra wings. We also had to reheat our food when we got home, even though we were only 15 minutes away from the restaurant. Nevertheless, the food was very flavorful! I also like that they include complimentary cornbread. The mint lemonade was also very refreshing. My friends and I loved it. I highly recommend to anyone in the New Haven area looking for a delicious takeout option! read more

I had this place on my list of restaurants to try while in Connecticut. After meeting the owner I knew I would support this business. So after a dinner mishap earlier I drove over here for take out. I have to start reading reviews and prices . A little more than I wanted to spend and when I was asked about dessert I thought it was complimentary. I had just picked up dessert from doughlious edible cookie dough. Which yelp say free dessert but there a error with check in. So when I look at my bill once I got home I was a little shocked . Seafood mac and cheese was great. Cabbage had no meat in it..thankfully. I am pescatarian and most sides are smothered in turkeyor pork. Salmon was okay. Next time I will stick to my original thought and get the fried catfish and side of Seafood mac read more
Fantastic soul food. Got the church plate - one entree, four sides, cornbread. I got meatloaf (the Wednesday special), mashed potatoes (another Wednesday special), collards, string beans, and Mac and cheese. Everything was great - meatloaf was really juicy and flavorful, and the vegetables better than you're expecting. My only complaint was the cornbread was so-so and kind of cold, but than (without asking) an employee came out and gave me hot buttered cornbread! She said it was the best way to try it. Great experience all around, can't wait to go back. read more

Visited CT for a couple of days and found this wonderfully owned and operated business. We ordered the BBQ Ribs, Pork Chop, Macaroni and Cheese, Sweet Potatoes, Collard Greens, Stuffing with and without Gravy. Everything was delicious. We also had the Cherry cheesecake and Butter Pecan Cake...... Sat on the hotel balcony and enjoyed the feast. We will be back in two weeks! I hope one of the specials of the Day include the stuffing with gravy. Thank you for a great meal on our road trip. read more

My partner and I came on a dreary Friday night after longing for this visit for months, and were welcomed in by delectable smells and the warmth of the soul food awaiting us. We were seated at the high-bar stool tables quickly and were attended to immediately with water and corn bread. They suggested the sweet potatoe, which was basically a less guilty form of cake. Da. Damn. After looking over the menu, we decided on the jerk chicken (I know I know, this place isn't Jamaican, but I was craving it), BBQ Pork Ribs, BBQ Chicken Wings, and Blackened Shrimp special of the day. For our sides we went with the mac and cheese, the sweet potatoe fries, fried plantains, and collard greens. All entrees came with a side of rice and beans, hallelujah. It's hard for me to explain the level of flavour that was afforded to us this night, but holy damn the food was good. The Chicken Wings were just perfectly cooked to the right amount of fried before drizzled in sauce while being succulent, the Ribs were some of the best I've had that, while not falling off the bone immediately, retained so much flavour, the Jerk Chicken was packed with aroma, while the Blackened Shrimp was probably my least favourite one, but still tasty. As for the sides, everything surpassed my expectations except the mac and cheese, which I thought could use a bit more goo-eyness to it. The plantains were just crisp enough to retain the caramelized sugar without tasting like the bottom of the pan, the collard greens had the perfect texture with the right amount of sweetness to it and the sweet potatoe fries delivered as promised. On top of all that, the place was so warm and friendly, we had such an amazing time. Shout out to our waiter Marquist {without the 'e'} who took care of us. read more
I was visiting my niece in Conneticut and searched for soul food in the area. We decided to try Sandra's and I'm glad we made the choice. The restaurant is quite small and quaint. There are only a few tables, so the wait can be quite long. We arrived when the restaurant opened, so we didn't have to wait for a seat. I ordered the blackened salmon, mac and cheese and collards. The food was delicious and had a New Orleans flare. The waitress was extremely attentive and made sure my niece and I had what we needed. I will definitely visit this restaurant again if I am ever in the area again. I must say, I was satisfied with the food and drinks. read more

I imagine Sandra's as being a meal someone on death row would request as their last meal. My first time ever walking in here, the ladies were singing their voices out to Diana Ross, apologized to me, and I said "No! I love it, please keep going!" They started talking to me like I was part of the family and that's when I knew the food would be good. The portions are large and is hands-down probably the best soul food you'll find in Connecticut. I keep wanting to try other things on their menu but I feel so sad when I don't order their smothered fried chicken. I also can't ever NOT order mac & cheese. It's my favorite side of all time and Sandra's Mac & cheese really hits the spot. To balance all the heaviness, I get the cabbage/collards mix. It doesn't get better! Meals come with corn bread and I love, love, love it! Their desserts look amazing as well! There have been days that I've stopped by and they were closed during regular hours, so I would definitely call your order ahead to make sure they're open! My mouth is watering just looking at these photos. :( read more

This place is fire, so it is very busy on weekends. I got my fried chicken fix, I know I am far from the South, but heck, good ratings and pics, I'm IN! This place has a lot to offer with your fried chicken: lots of sides, lots of drinks, lots of desserts, man, lots of everything. Just think take out when you come, this place is packed in and out, and the line is long. You can talk to the people around you, something you should do, or bother the staff like I do, but the point is: good chicken, with extra breading, tasty sides, and at a decent price, just the way things should be. read more

Found this place on a list of the best fried chicken places in America. Oh boy is the fried chicken good. As well as all their other food. This place is a bit out of town and parts of it look kind of sketchy. But getting to this place is well worth the commute. I got BBQ ribs and fried chicken with collard greens and black-eyed peas. For $17 it was delicious! My friends also really enjoyed their meals as well. My friend has family down South and she attest that it was just as good as the food there. And I must say... the service is AMAZING! Our waitress was so friendly and nice. We gave her a 40% tip because she was that attentive and nice. Highly recommend. Would come back just for more fried chicken!! Tip: Check in for free dessert. CASH ONLY read more
