In any case, to get a sense of all this, I would recommend stopping in at the local boulangerie in any of these towns, getting an elaborate pastry such as tartelette aux fruits, milles feuilles, napoleon, paris-brest, chocolatine or just an eclair with a great cup of coffee, capuccino, espresso, tea, or your choice of caffeinated beverage, and look out the window as people walk by and take you through a story both fascinating and sad at the same time. If you can, buy a loaf of bread to take with you, and if you are feeling forgetful you might neglect to realize this until you are safely back at home.
