This is a MUST STOP! Either passing through South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero Isles on Lake Chaplain or staying in Burlington or any of the Isles mentioned. We've been to the Lake and Grand Isles a couple of times over the years (2004 & 2021) and I'd have to say NOT ENOUGH. Hero's Welcome has been frequented each visit and more than once. A transformed original General Store. Today's Hero's Welcome offers something for everyone. Fresh made sandwiches, salads, and beverages. Mentioning beverages: Wine closet, cordials, and cooler case of beers and local craft ales. Packaged ice cream and sickles, a big candy counter, and sweet gifts to bring home. Kitchenware, textiles, gift cards, and various hardware. Camp supplies, fishing gear, survival goods for roughing the elements. There was a table where craft lessons could be had. Upstairs is for the younger at heart; I raced up those stairs! Toys, books, games, puzzles, posters, maps, and impish gags (giggle). I love coming to this store, and have been for nearly 30 years since I was a little kid. When you walk in, you'll arrive at the cashier and deli section, where you can buy sandwiches, coffee, baked goods, and a few deli items from a fridge. The sandwiches are pretty good. I've never been entirely impressed with them, but they hit the spot most days. I'd recommend the Apple Annie or the Thomas Jefferson. Make sure to ask for chips on the side, they're supposed to come with the sandwich but they don't always give them to you. I recommend walking across the street and eating at their picnic tables on the lake. Walk in a little further and you've got an impressive candy aisle, some great wines, maple syrup, and a nice selection of cold drinks and beer. There's also a small variety of household goods and supermarket items. The basics mostly, like tomato sauce and sugar, toothbrushes and Advil. Where Hero's Welcome really shines is what comes next, when you walk to the back half of the store. Its impressive inventory of cool, fun, and unusual knick-knacks are what always brings me back here! They've got all sorts of interesting and unique kitchen items and appliances, a giant shelf of metal tools that look like they came from a professional dentist, a fantastic array of sweatshirts, Vermont adorned merchandise, postcards made by locals, and wonderful smelling soaps and lotions. This might sound like a lot, but I'm barely scratching the surface. It's worth it to explore every corner. Upstairs they have a great selection of books shelved by topic, beautiful maps, and kids' toys. I've always been particularly impressed by their collection of local authors and books about Vermont and Lake Champlain history. I have fond memories of racing up the stairs and picking out fun puzzles, games, and stuffed animals. You never know what you're going to find up there, but it's always something enjoyable. Out back is a separate building where you can get water toys and lake accessories. They've got inflatable creatures, life vests, pool noodles and more. Bonus points if you remember the smoothie and pizza spot they were running out of here many years ago! Mixed reviews on the staff - they'll have either quiet young people or standoffish islanders who act like they can't be bothered by the very tourists they lure to the store. It's always been like this and that's why I have to take off a star. I think if they were friendlier it would add so much to the atmosphere, but this aspect always disappoints me. Overall, Hero's Welcome is a fun and memorable general store. It's been here as long as I've come to the lake and it's a big part of my childhood. While I wouldn't rave about the food nor the staff, the experience of the full store itself makes it well worth the visit! read more

Apple Annie served with yummy apple chutney made this a great flavorful ham sandwich served on a hard roll. Will def order it again! The cookies are hit or miss. This time, my chocolate chip cookie was burned on the bottom! Time before that, it was delicious. Then I selected what I thought was peanut butter and realized I was eating coconut (yuk)! Heres the problem. They use tiny pieces of wax paper to separate the cookies in the basket. How easy would it be to label each individual cookie so there are no surprises. And having more cookies and more variety in stock would be great! read more

Fun visit to an old fashioned general store in North Hero. Lots of items were a 'blast from the past'. Many toys to keep the young ones entertained. Lots of books both bestsellers and old favorites. There is an entire section of books by Vermont writers about Vermont. So much to peruse that would totally lost track of time and we realized we were hungry. Hero's Welcome is such a fun stop! Browsing through the store beings one surprise after another from the books tucked upstairs to a gourmet shop...and of course, sweatshirts and local treats. Old fashioned candies, wines, and coffee sit up front near the deli. We chose a couple of different sandwiches and traded halves, but the truth is that we could easily have shared one. On a bright sunny day, take your lunch across the street and sit lakeside at s picnic table. Hero's Welcome is an experience to savor, well worth the drive. read more

THE MOST AMAZING SANDWICH I'VE EVER HAD! We were only there for a getaway weekend but our hosts told us we had to stop here and I'm so glad we did. Cool selection of original sandwiches, large selection of wines and alcohol, and a ton of random necessities and souvenirs. Perfect place! Good subs and sandwiches. I got a tuna sub and my wife got a veggie sub. They have interesting names for all the subs. Nice area to sit down and eat. Hero's Welcome is everything a great general store should be ... and the food lives up to its excellent reputation. There were five of us that came across the lake from St Albans Bay. We were able to tie up at a dock right across the street. The sandwiches were all made with quality ingredients on fresh bread and I enjoyed every bite. Well worth the average $7 price for the sandwiches. And the general store part of the store is just fun to browse through. Was thrilled to find "Moose Farkle" to add to my Farkle dice collection. And it's a great place to find a Vermont t-shirt/sweatshirt. However, I am more than a little nervous about their obsession with third-world dental instruments :-) read more

I've been coming here for almost 20 years and truly loved this place but everyone PLEASE STEER CLEAR OF THE OLDER MALE OWNER up front. Not only is he disrespectful towards women but he does not know how to provide customer service. He's legitimately rude and aggressive! He needs to be removed and I'm leaving the store now with my boyfriend - feeling beyond uncomfortable.... not a good start to my day. All over them not having their machines turned on during working hours. read more

Many things are wonderful about this place, but the "welcome" isn't one of them! Forget the notion of boating up, having lunch, buying some provisions, gassing up, and continuing on your way. I was chased off by a grumpy man who clearly has no interest in taking care of customers. We'll find somewhere else to patronize. read more

This place is great. They seem to have everything. We needed a pencil sharpener and they had one. It was a little expensive but it was really good. You can find what you need here that's for sure. We didn't get anything to eat other than a coffee, but we did buy some groceries for breakfast. I would definitely come back again when I needed something. Every year, on the third Wednesday in June, ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain staff, volunteers and interns, head up to North Hero State Park to release neonate softshell turtles that have been 'head-started' at ECHO. And after every release, we stop at Hero's Welcome for lunch to celebrate another successful year raising and releasing the turtles. And every year, we get the same great sandwiches, prepared by super people, and we take the time to allow new folks to stroll through and enjoy the store which has something from everyone. This is a general store in the truest sense of the word. Hero's Welcome sells everything. Boating supplies, sandwiches, alcohol, foodstuffs, cooking gear, books, toys, bedding, clothing. Probably some other stuff that I forgot about, there are two floors after all. The sandwich menu is extensive and everything is around $7. They bake their own rolls and the sandwiches are pretty big. Oh, and they have a patio across the street that looks out over City Bay and the Green Mountains. read more

Hero's Welcome is an interesting little shop. We stopped by for lunch on a bike ride around the island. The sandwiches were really nothing special, but it was pleasant to eat at the tables across the street (despite the yellow jackets). The baked good looked very good, and the brownie was really good. Great place to stop for a sandwich. The also have great baked goods. The morning glory muffins are to die for. My family stops at Hero's welcome when we are out on the boat and need to stop for some gas and a snack. They also have an adorable gift shop with Vermont products. A summer isn't complete for me without making a stop at Hero's Welcome. read more

A quintessential Vermont country store. They have everything, and it's displayed in a down-home but organized way. Lots of kitchenware to supply local cottages on the lake and lots of clothing - sweatshirts, tee shirts, hats, etc.. They also have books, toys and games, groceries, a deli (that's packed for lunch in the summertime) and a boat store. Helpful staff, picnic tables to eat at outside and the post office is right next door. Situated right on the lake with views of Mount Mansfield.
