    Sweet potato Cornbread

Really good bbq and worth the travel if you aren't in the neighborhood and looking to get your hands on some good bbq. Staff was friendly and the place was clean so that's a plus. Portions very good sizes for the prices so you'll definitely feel you get your moneys worth.

Food was pretty good. Not sure I agree with NY times ranking amongst best restaurants in the country but I was satisfied. Wanted to try the cornbread but during my mid afternoon visit they were sold out. Wings weren't overly sweet & they definitely were bigger than party wings. Corn had a smoky & slightly spicy element to it which separates it from thousands of places in terms of corn. I'd return if in the area. I'm no bbq aficionado so take my review with that in mind.

Clockwise from top left: pickled onions, baked beans, Cajun sausage, peach tea smoked chicken wings, Mac & cheese, sweet potato cornbread

I wanted to start off the new year with a restaurant I hadn't been to yet; we were in Beverly and Sanders happened to be a block away so this was a no-brainer. We went in January so I can't speak to their outdoor seating but there were about 5-7 tables inside so keep that in mind if you're dining in. Takeout is an excellent option if it makes sense for you. We got the peach tea wings, the Cajun sausage, Mac and cheese, baked beans and the sweet potato cornbread. The wings were everything they'd been hyped up to be: tender, sauced up and full of flavor. The sausage was seasoned well and the baked beans were solid. The Mac and cheese didn't blow me away but the sweet potato cornbread was FIRE! Just be warned, it's more like a piece of cake than traditional cornbread and has a very sweet glaze on top. All in all, this was a great meal and I will be trying the Hyde Park location when it opens!

The food was actually pretty good! I got the smoked oxtails and the only thing I would've liked more was if they had left more of the fat on them so they stay more moist. Mine was missing any fat and were dry. However, they do give a lot of them and the flavor and presentation was great! The cornbread and corn were very good also. I hated there were only a few drink options and no sweet tea. I love tea with my bbq. Now the service was split. There was a really nice young man that helped at the tables and brought the food out. I can't remember for sure if he had locks or something. He was so nice. BUT the young lady working at the register was terrible. Rude and unprofessional. She was not welcoming to anyone in line. She wasn't helpful and had a terrible disposition. I don't know her name but the name on my receipt was Makeena. Definitely try it!

I heard quite a bit hype around this spot so I had to come check it out. This is one of the only bbq places in the area that was serving smoked oxtails. I'm used to places in Chicago having the typical rib tips, links and ribs. The place was hopping on the afternoon we went. Luckily this place is deceptively big there is seating in the front room, middle patio and back party room. The line moves pretty quickly. You'll take a number with you to your table and they'll deliver the food right to you. Despite being busy the staff was all very friendly and patient. We ordered the oxtail, ribs, sausage, and brisket. We ordered the elote, greens, beans and Mac and cheese. We really like the ribs and sausage. The oxtails were a little greasy like there wasn't enough fat trimmed off before they were smoked. It also had the taste of the smoker like it should have been cleaned. The brisket was decent a little tough though. It may have been sitting in the warmer too long. The greens were a little salty and the beans were more reminiscent of chili beans than bbq baked beans. Overall it was decent, but I'm not sure it lived up to the hype given. I would come back to try the burger though.

Stopped by Sanders to grab lunch after craving some rib tips. I preordered for take out and my order was ready by the time I arrived. The lady working the front was friendly and offered to grab extra sauces for me at the station before leaving with the food. When I got home, majority of the food was still hot. I ordered a small rib tips w/fries, 1/2lb of brisket, pulled pork sandwich, and brisket sandwich. The portion size of the rib tips was more than I expected but appreciated. They weren't the meatiest pieces I've ever had but with there being so much I was satisfied. I asked for lean cuts of brisket which seemed to be honored. Overall the food was good, I'd go back it just wouldn't be my first choice.

Ordered online with a 30 minute pick up time, food was ready when I arrived. Decided on the platter that feed 2-4 and the large tips. The tips were good and juicy but I didn't care for the sauce on them. The brisket was flavorful with a nice mix of fat and meat, the sausage was great, ribs were tender and smoked well, the pull pork lacked any type of flavor. My sides were greens which were seasoned to perfection, beans that were tasty and the cornbread which I loved. The sauces leave a lot to be desired but the meat is good even without the sauce. Overall good spot with good smoked meats!

This is a true south side gem. For anyone looking to better explore the city, make Sanders one of your first stops! The ambiance is modern meets down home BBQ. The staff are very friendly and willing to walk you through their menu. The real star of the show is their FOOD! We had the chimichurri smoked wings and fried catfish. The wings were legitimately some of the best I've ever had; juicy, flavorful, and the order is a great size. The catfish breading is super flavorful and the fish is fried to perfection. Don't miss out, visit Sanders ASAP!

So my son is a huge fan of Sanders and I was craving a cheeseburger made freshly not pre-formed from a package. Accordingly I ordered a Smoked Cheeseburger without their house sauce and with fries, the Texas Trinity 1/3lb brisket 1/ 2lb rib 1 sausage, and my son a Smoked Cheeseburger with Elote. Given how outstanding the service was at the start talking to a pit-master over the glass while in line and a really pleasant young lady at the register, the praise stops there. Burger came without the fries and it took 15 minutes to get the staff to bring me French fries!!!! The burger tasted like it was seasoned with cayenne pepper and was way over smoked to the point of being completely dried out. The elote was disgusting -- it was so salty it was not edible. The Texas Trinity saved the meal although I agree with Rozalynn B's comment about the sausage. The place is much more spacious than it appears when you walk in, and there is more indoor seating past the outdoor dining area.

Came on a cold rainy Saturday with my husband around 6:30pm. Luckily line wasn't very long and we found a table easily. Friendly service. We ordered the ribs, beef rib, and peach tea wings. The sauce on the wings was excellent and my husband really enjoyed the ribs. The beef rib was pretty fatty but had good flavor. We were only disappointed that they were sold out of the brisket.

Food was hot and fresh. Came out fast and was so good. I want to say the sides were the highlight but tbh the peach tea wings were fire. Said they were out of the "made to order" brown butter pecan cookies so that was the only thing.

I came in today around 11:45 am and it was crowded. But the line went fast and they were very efficient !!! My mom will be 80 years old in January....With family roots from Crystal Springs, Mississippi and she said these were the best pork ribs she's ever had! I agree! We each got a half a slab! They were sooooo good I forgot to take a picture of them! Mannnnnnn soooo sooo tender! Amazing Sanders! We loved it. We also got Mac and Cheese, and Collard Greens which were delicious! Mac and cheese and collards for $6 for a small side and $10 for a large. Very reasonably priced! The large is massive and can feed 3-4 people. Now the sweet potato cornbread looked amazing visually but fell flat for my mom and I. You have the sugar and the cinnamon, and the butter covering the top of the cornbread and then the sweet potato is kind of layered in the cornbread mix. I think it would taste better if you took some of that topping and put it actually in the cornbread not just on top. Also try roasting the sweet potatoes to kinda give it more flavor. Well at least for my taste lolllllll! However, my son LOVED it! Customer service was amazing, washrooms were clean and for you guys to be busy, the food came out pretty fast!!! You guys deserve five stars!!!! I can't wait to try the other things on the menu. Great job Sanders BBQ! Ya'll better workkkk! ***** Sorry I didn't get a picture of my own ribs, they were so good I smashed them before I could! But as they were making someone's plate, I took a picture of a sampler of some sort because it had sausage and ribs on the plate too! *****Oh and they are cashless!

Drove about an hour just to check it out. Here's my take: It's ok, not going to drive an hour for it, but if I was near here I'd partake again! We came in on a Sat afternoon at 1pm. The line was already out of the door. I wasnt aware of how the line forms, but it did move quickly. Once you're reached in line you order quickly! You find seating or wait on your carryout. The place is small, and it was PACKED! But we got seated and they brought our dine in food out to us on trays. Everything was fresh and hot. We ordered the Trinity platter, it includes ribs, brisket, & a sausage link. We ordered the smoked oxtails and the beef short rib. Various sides which were priced ala carte. Greens, mac, cornbread, baked beans. How'd it taste? Oxtails, which I love, weren't great! Good idea, but not executed properly. Beef short rib was good! Not $42 good tho, for 1 bone. Sausage was ok, could've been more well done. I didnt try the brisket or ribs, heard they too were just ok. Sides just ok. The service was good. That's all I've got! Enjoy

Most of the comments call out there poor customer service as well as questionable, predatorial behavior. Stop having people unfamiliar or afraid to interact with people in roles where they have to INTERACT WITH PEOPLE. Typical stuff, not being respectful when presented with ordering mistakes, trying to charge people for silly things like bags for each sandwhich, etc. Things that NEVER happen in white areas. Absolute trash. Poor quality bread that was like a doughy shake. Got the large. Poor quality bread made it a diabetic fright. And it was disgusting. Meat was carne asada. I got a sandwhich that's supposed to be shaved meat. The Sweet Steak is a specific sandwhich. Imagine drinking an Horchata that was made of coconut milk. That's how weird it is to have you try to use your recipe for sweet steak. Isn't from your particular culture. Obviously you couldn't be bothered to research and respect the culture that this sandwhich comes from. Like you're going to tell me how it's supposed to be made? Cruz? Are you from this planet? A coconut horchata, or a buttermilk horchata, or a mayo horchata, or a cauliflower horchata - none of these are what you can get at 99% Mexican restaurant. Is carne asada usually ground beef? Just coming from SoCal it's like you're being deliberately obtuse. Really hope you take the time to think about this. It is absolutely bizarre hermano. You look absolutely bizzare to people with time to think about why you are choosing to make these decisions. Moreover it's disrespectful that you're not even trying to figure out why things are popular the way African Americans cook it. Weird and Trumpy to say the least. I avoided another spot owned by my non-black brothers because of the tendency to get frozen fried chicken in retaurants. It's unfortunate that this place is attempting to profit from the name Home of the Hoagie, a historical black female owned restaurant, yet they only supplicate the experience with poor quality. Didn't even know Home of the Hoagie used cheese. Quality is subtle like that. This place had their cheese sloppily added to the sandwhich. It's like they don't care about the community they are serving this crap too. It's really a bad look. Another "Hoagie" shop I didn't go to was also because the people making the food didn't seem like they even appreciated the food enough to replicate it with the care and degree that made their shop famous. If Mr. Cruz wants my business, take the time to replicate, at least the quality of Home of The Hoagie. All that great customer service doesn't help if your going to sell Greasy Spoon to make that quick dollar. Brought my friend from Europe here thinking it might be anything like Home of The Hoagie on 111th. You lost out on those dollars. Lost on some international good will. He's told his countrymen about Home of the Hoagie. Wanted to see if I could save some time by trying out your spot Cruz. Ended wasting time as the food was sooo terrible. Just feels disengenuous that you take the name to profit from it yet can't respect WHY they are considered the best. It's hard work that got them the coveted title. Else your name would be Cruz's Soul Carne Asada. Threw the 2nd sandwhich in the garbage without opening it. Fries both were the pre-frozen cheap stuff. Fries that I asked for sauce had hardly any! lol This is a greasy pop up. It won't last. Somebody got money, hired people they knew but failed to do anything else that could help their business. Home of the Hoagie is older than me for a reason! They are good. Even after the owner passed away. If you call ahead there's still some wait. After this horrendous experience, I'll wait in the long line, shut my mouth and like it.

It was a bit spicer than medium, which I was warned, but it was worth it. The chicken was juicy and tender and I was impressed by the freshness of the other ingredients as well as their tortilla wrap selection! The chicken gumbo was also quite tasty. I would order both again. The prices were reasonable, it was a $3 upcharge for a side of soup. I sat in the restaurant to eat and enjoyed the music. I think I might have found my new lunch spot!

This black owned business has above average standing room in the waiting area, two TVs and an ATM with a good amount of seats/benches. Seems like it might've been an old chinese food joint with a few tables, but they opted for a pure takeout experience (which is unfortunately the trend nowadays.) Since it was my first time I thought I'd try both the fish and chicken combo along with the dirty rice. The total came out to be $24 with the wait being about 15 minutes. The staff overall were nice.      After leaving the place and checking the food. I realized that the combo dinner didn't contain a roll and coleslaw like advertised which was kind of disappointing. It did have the fries though. The requested lemon pepper was there, but they also seasoned the chicken/catfish with garlic powder, salt and parsley which is fine. Everything was fried hard, but not dry which creates the perfect pleasurable crunch. The chicken and fish tasted better than a lot of the restaurants in the area with the fish having a lightness to the breading that's sorely missed. Some of the chicken was weirdly tough though as if it was slightly undercooked.      Speaking of misses we have to talk about the dirty rice. Dirty rice is one of those dishes that seems like it either is absolute perfection or an abomination with no in-between. This unfortunately falls into the latter with it not only looking boring with all brown notes, but the initial taste as well as texture being an off putting creamy rancid trip to flavor hell. After a just a few bites my stomach turned which does not bode well for this dish. I have no idea what went wrong here, but it seems like it may have been sitting out too long. Even the smell was a bit rancid. At least it has a good ratio of ground beef to rice which a lot of places skimp on. They also attempted to add in some vegetables like peppers although they are barely noticeable.       Overall Surf's up is a good spot with friendly staff, decent prices, but some issues with quality. My advice is to make sure the cooking temps are correct and consistent. Definitely make sure if food is sitting idle, that it is kept at the mandatory minimum of 140 degrees farenheit to avoid it going rancid so quickly. Also, double check the orders before sending them out or edit the menu if it is outdated.

I had placed many online orders for pick-up on my 30min lunch break, to ensure I had proper time to drive to, pick up my food, and quickly drive back from the restaurant. After a few pick-ups took around 20mins after promised time, I was pretty upset. I was told they only start making food once the person is there to pick it up, so I asked what's the point of placing an order online and receiving a pick-up time, when the food only starts to get made once you're at the restaurant to pick up? That's when the owner stepped in (My family and I have had many pleasant convos with him before at the old location), turned red, bunched up his face, and legit yelled at me "What do you expect? Do you want your fries to be cold or do you want them fresh?" (I was taken aback, and responded "I expect my order to be ready at the time indicated"). He told me I could go elsewhere. I get it. I was receiving consistently poor service and was upset when I asked the cashier about timing, so he stepped in to defend his worker. What I don't get is how you can tell a customer to go somewhere else when they're expecting their food at the time promised (or at least within 5 mins...I'm not THAT picky). Perhaps my expectations are too high?
