Game selected: Deadwood Valley While I'm familiar with the whole concept of virtual reality, I had never tried it out until my first visit to Sandbox VR. When we arrived, we used the kiosks to check in, sign the waiver and input our contact information. This becomes important later in order to receive your post-game video highlights via email & text. After this, a staff member took us to the back and guided us on how to suit up. Each person must wear a vest and a total of four sensors that strap on to each wrist and ankle. We then entered our game room and the employee assisted us with strapping on the headsets which launched us into the virtual world! It's so cool to look around what was previously just an empty room and see your teammates in their animated state. After a quick tutorial, we were handed the weapons we selected and the game began. Without going into too much detail, we were "transported" into a city that has been overrun with zombies, zombified dogs, birds and other monstrous creatures. The game lasted about 30 minutes and took place across three different stages. You are truly immersed in the environment. When the zombies attack, it appears as if they are right in your face and your vest vibrates upon their contact. When you're shooting, keep in mind that accuracy counts! For attire, wear light clothing as you'll be moving the entire time, equivalent to a bit of a workout. The gear itself is pretty lightweight, but the headset is not super comfortable. Understandably, it needs to be strapped on tightly, but it felt like my cheeks were being pulled down and about halfway through, it seemed like the headset was slightly clouding up. Four of us played the Deadwood Valley game and the rest of our group played Unbound Fighting League. For UFL, only two players can play at a time, so you will spend some time sitting on the sidelines. The 30 minutes of gameplay went by quickly and then one of the employees showed us our video highlights on a large screen, which were entertaining to say the least! The videos are immediately sent via email / text as well. This virtual reality experience was super fun and very unique, however it was $60 per person for 30 minutes of a single game. To me, that seems fairly steep. For that price, it would have been nice if they allowed you to play two games (or offered some type of package deal to do that), however I'm sure that's all part of their strategy to get customers to return. read more

Fun experience. Staff was friendly and helpful. There seem to be a few glitches in the software, but it eventually got straightened out. The VR part was nice to try... but be careful about bumping into you your teammates. It was nice to have a team concept even with people that you didn't know. I was sweating a bit wearing the headsets, but it was probably also due to the activity. It was nice to know that they sanitize between games and people. The surrounding businesses had a good vibe. This place was SO FUN! I had a great time and so did a couple of our buddies who came in! It was someone pricey but it was a full immersion experience. It was accurate enough that I could shake hands with my friends with the headset on. I was impressed! When moving in the game they gave fans that simulate the feeling of movement. We had a blast! This was a really fun event. The Sandbox team was well organized and the setup was intuitive and fun. This was my first time to play a group VR game like this. It was a lot of fun. Our group chose to slay the dragon, which was an interesting adventure. While the "weapons" you hold are not heavy, you do get a bit of a workout. The game is about 40 mins. Some of us were wishing we'd chose something with guns, just to lessen the arm waiving. Regardless, it's not overly strenuous by any stretch. The only thing I would note is that it can be a little disorienting and you may feel like you're going to loose your balance. Not too bad. No one fell down. But, at least for me, that was something to contend with. It's fun. If you like video games, even as a kid (and especially if you are on the younger side), you'll probably love this. My kid was one of 6 who attended a birthday party here. (4/5th graders) and they're pretty unphased these days. They're use to dave and busters and are regular gamers with all the devices and tech. BUT- this place AMAZED them!! ALL of them were so hyped afterwards. Saying how cool it was and couldn't stop talking about it even after we did food afterwards ( burgers walking distance at Joe's afterwards). Since the bday boy's mom booked the experience, I only have the observer experience, but it looked like a blast. They played squid games. No gore or anything scary that I saw on screen. Just seemed like some games from Season 1. Good team work activity too. The employee, Stewart, was a saint- having the most patience for the rowdy group of boys. There was I think 2 times that there was an equipment issue, and he was there to reset it and told the boys to hold still in place while he did it on the computer. I loved the video at the end and that all the parents could easily get the link and watch. I guarantee we'll be back. Cons- parking was in same building but it was still kind of a trek. Street parking was full. Women's bathroom - a stall was completely out of toilet paper. Backup ring and regular, so made me think it wasn't regularly tended to. Getting equipment on- I may have missed this part, but I didn't really get the instructions and had a hard time helping put on the wrist and ankle gear. I think maybe if the Velcro ones were exclusively reserved for the kids that would be helpful vs the ones that are like watch bands. read more

This place is pricey but well worth it for the occasional trip. The experience is a lot better than VR games you can play at home. You can actually feel some of the impacts and it's SO fun experiencing virtual reality with friends or family. Something that can't be duplicated yet at home. The games are only 30-40 minutes (about 10 minutes for the tutorials) and I was initially worried it was too short but you'll be moving around for that entire time, either laughing or screaming depending on which game you picked. And when it's over you'll feel like you played through a complete experience. The only thing stopping this from being a five star review for me comes down to the price. They should offer a discount if you come with a group of four or more players or if you want to play more than one game in a row. read more

We've been here twice with a group of 11 year olds and they've loved it. The down sides are when the equipment stops working, or if there's no staff to greet you. It wastes a lot of time and it's a confusing process with no help. Also, I don't recommend having a birthday party here because it's just a table against a wall - no private area at all. I wish they'd have a tv to watch the group play, instead of the small computer monitor. If all goes well, the kids have a great time no matter which game they play. read more

READ LAST PARAGRAPH ON HOW TO POSSIBLY GET YOUR VIDEO The VR experience and the games itself are super fun and I highly recommend doing a shooting game versus the squid game. The body gear vibrates so when you get hurt it vibrates and makes you feel like you're actually in the game. If you're deathly afraid of heights, I wouldn't suggest doing the squid game experience because it really does feel like you're falling! When you book your experience you are placed in decent sized room so you are blocked off from other people, which I like because you're isolated from others and the sounds don't really bleed into your area unless they're screaming (there's scary games so some people get scared). Sadly, the one thing that keeps me hesitant from coming here is the customer service. You're informed to get there 15 minutes before your time-slot, but even when you get there no one is there to greet you or give instructions. I'm pretty sure the 15 minutes are supposed to be for the waiver and getting all set up with your gear so that it doesn't eat up your actual game time, but two times that I have been there we were spending the 15 minutes and sometimes more trying to find a worker. I also notice that sometimes they don't send out the email for the video that you're promised at the end of the experience. What you can do, (since it's hard to get ahold of anyone) is to make an account with Sandbox using the email you used on the waiver and the videos should show up on your experiences! read more

Terrible experience. I've been to this Sandbox and the Seattle location several times and this was an absolute nightmare and waste of almost $300. I was running 5-7 minutes late so I called in advance to confirm that would be ok with no answer or call back. I walked in 7 minutes late and was told to check in by one staff member. 5 minutes after that Levi came up already combative informing that I'd need to reschedule because I was "15 minutes late". I let him know I walked in 7 minutes late and he told me they would shave 10 minutes off my session. I agreed thinking the sessions were at least 45 minutes based on previous visits. We get our gear on and are told that my husband needs to do his waiver (unclear on the check in machine-I thought I completed for everyone). Steve was very rude and said "no he's a grown man he needs to do his own". Levi attempted to tell me after the session that was my "actual check in time". They were mad I was late and both had terrible attitudes and made terrible comments the whole time. While getting our gear on, Levi louder called Steve's name and gestured for him to speed up or wrap it up quickly". Steve made comments about how the games were for 9 year olds as he strapped my 7 and 8 year olds up. During our session, half of it was spent trying to get assistance fixing the VR issues we were having in game. In total, our entire play time was MAYBE 10 minutes. I spoke with Levi about this and all he could do was be combative telling me we were 30 minutes late (from time my husband was finally told his waiver was missing). I asked if something could be done to resolve this experience. He was extremely short and told me no. I asked who I could call and talk to. At first he said I could call the Kirkland sandbox VR number (the one I called en route with no answer with the same people in the building I could be talking to now). I asked for a manager and he said "call for Shaun". I had to pry out what date and time I needed to call for Shaun. I am extremely disappointed in how rudely we were treated from the second we walked thru the door. Obviously all this location cares about is volume not customer experience. I had such a fun time here! Haven't done anything like it before so I was nervous going in and not knowing what to expect, but I'm already excited to go back. Free parking in the garage right next door too. The staff are excellent and I felt like I was in good hands the whole time! Austin helped us out. The first 15 minutes or so is prep and getting into gear, you have a sensor for each extremity, a vest, backpack/VR set combo, and headphones. They explain what to expect, some safety things and most importantly help you pick which experience you want. We opted for Amber Sky which is basically a team mission where you kill monsters/aliens and try to deliver an important package. There's also a zombie room where you're in a dark room killing zombies (no thank you), a kid-friendly room and another option or 2. Once you have your gear on, they take you a big empty room where you get to play! You get about 45 minutes and it's a blast. I got warm wearing all the gear and trying to shoot monsters, so I don't recommend a jacket. You can have up to a party of 6 per room! At the end, you get your scores and a neat video of your experience that's almost like a video game trailer. Overall super fun experience! I'll be back read more

I was invited to come here for a friend's birthday. We had a group of 6 and we played Deadwood Valley. It was about $55 a person. Overall, we had a fun experience trying something new and I'd recommend checking it out if you're interested in VR. However, we did have some major issues. You first check in at the kiosks in the lobby. Your whole group needs to check in individually which was not clear, so we stood around waiting until someone told us. When you do get in, you'll get set up with sensors, haptic vest, etc. This is the time they'll explain the game. Personally, our guide seemed a bit rushed, didn't explain much at all, and we went into the game a bit confused. You'll then get set up in a room which takes a decent amount of time. They'll give you a VR headset, backpack, and weapons. Not gonna lie, the backpack is quite heavy. One person in our group had issues the entire time with the VR spazzing out and no one could fix the issue for him. So he was subject to lag and the screen jerking around suddenly. That only happened one of us but it was still annoying that the issue couldn't be resolved before we played and that he just had to stick it out. We enjoyed the game overall and the gameplay felt to be around 30 minutes. Since we had a birthday, there was short birthday scene at the end with a cake. I thought that was a nice touch. You get a recap video to watch at the end that is also emailed to you. I would come again, but I hope the issues with the VR or the ability to troubleshoot and fix them are improved ASAP. read more

Great experience, I highly recommend this as a "must do". There are both, pros and cons that I feel new customers should be aware of from the perspective of our experience, realizing that your experience may differ. I want to be fair in presenting both. Due to the nature of how the "cons" affected our experience, I'm only giving this experience a 3 out 5 stars for the review. So, be aware but honestly, don't let that stop you from going! PROS: ONE ====== The staff was SUPER friendly, inviting, engaging, helpful TWO ====== This is a REALLY novel concept and fun way to spend 35 minutes or so. Whether you've tried VR or not, at home or elsewhere, I feel confident you'll appreciate the great graphics and sense of immersion provided by this unique experience. THREE ====== This is perhaps my favorite part, in a way. They videotape your session, both from within the game and of you playing the game. After your game is over, they take you to an area where you can view the video, which is then sent to your email for no extra charge. The video alternates between in game and real world so one second you're a cool swashbuckler from within the game fighting hordes of skeleton creatures and the next, you're a total uber dork wailing wildly at empty space while yelling at your friends to "touch your shoulder to revive you". Great work on the video edits, I love it. And needless to say, the email includes the ability to share the video via all manners of social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc. etc). CONS: ONE ====== We arrived 15 minutes ahead of our scheduled appointment time, just as the reminder email we received from them instructed us to do. In spite of this, we had to wait 30 minutes beyond our scheduled start time. When I was asked about this, I was advised that a computer was down earlier which caused a backup which then causes everything behind it to backup even further. In one sense, it's logical but in another sense having to wait 30 minutes when the email to us explicitly states "During busy times, we cannot accommodate any guest who is more than 5 minutes late. ". So yeah, that's pretty unfair that if I'm more than 5 minutes late I risk losing my session but the business expects customers to wait 30 minutes. They need to fix that. Compensate the customer, maybe 50% of a future session so it's win-win, the customer feels their time is valued, the establishment is accountable for their own delays, and the discount encourages the customer to return for another visit. TWO ====== Loud screeches. This is probably to be expected at any type of amusement venue but just be forewarned, some of the other customers are constantly screeching at the highest pitch tones throughout their sessions, and if you're at all sensitive to that .. it could detract from the overall enjoyment of your personal experience. THREE ====== The game had to be paused two times due to technical glitches. On two separate occasions, the screen in my girlfriend's VR went totally black, she wasn't able to see any of the video from the game. Consequently, the game had to be paused while the staff figured out and eventually resolved the issue. This really removes you from the whole point of the experience ... the immersiveness. As with my first point, these types of glitches can tend to happen .. I guess (although they should really be worked out so they don't) the establishment needs to hold themselves accountable when it does happen. The overall experience is worth it ~but~ far from inexpensive, this needs to be taken into account in helping customers decide if it's worth coming back for a second round. FOUR ====== The game was intentionally paused by the staff about 2/3 of the way in to change the battery packs on whatever we were using. This, again, robs someone of a bit of the immersiveness of the experience. At the very least, let customers know ahead of time (on the website and directly to the customer before the game starts). But to have the game suddenly paused out of the blue, that's just weird. NEUTRAL ======== ONE The game could be a small bit physically taxing. You're not going to keel over but you could work up a sweat with jumping around and the weight of the VR stuff on you. None of that is a bad thing at all. However, my girlfriend was wearing a light jack and was really hot at the end of the session. So I think it's a good idea for staff to let players know that if you wear extra clothing you might get overheated. In all fairness, there is a blurb in the reminder email stating "Wear light, comfortable clothing so you can move around freely and comfortably in our VR environments! Some games really get the heart pumping!" but it would be nice for staff to mention the same as well. read more

Although the activity/idea was fun. Ran into multiple technical hiccups including two separate batteries running out during the game resulting in lag and pauses. A haptic vest was having perma-vibration (for half the game). The kicker though was that when being shown our trailer video, the montage was glitched and had no footage of us actually playing, only in-game footage. The employee told us that the video would render our in-person portion later that evening on the website but we were very skeptical that was going to happen but felt more like a way of just getting us out the door. It's been almost 24 hours and the personalized trailer video is still bugged out. My girlfriend was really looking forward to that footage too. This review is primarily for the management. Unfortunately due to the overall poor experience that we had, we didn't even get to try the VR experience. We were here last week for a friend's nephews 11th bday. He was so excited and looking forward to it. Our booking was for 5:30 pm and we were there ~20 mins ahead of time to allow time for briefing, etc. We were assigned to a room where it seemed like the previous group had just started. After waiting around for an hour, we finally got our gear at 6:30 pm. While we were still getting setup, we were told that we wouldn't be able to go ahead since the wifi in the entire neighborhood was out and there was no ETA for when it would be back. I understand that this isn't in their control but had we started on time, we would have finished by then. The kid was really disappointed but we were glad that sandbox offered to refund us and also give us a voucher to come back another time. We were told that they would process the refund as soon as the systems were back online (which was within the hour); but there was no communication of the refund for over a week. Unfortunately, after multiple follow up calls, we were told that they were expecting us to call and reschedule for another day (so they wouldn't have to issue a refund). We get that the outage was not in their control but making people wait for over an hour (despite having a reservation) and not being prompt about addressing a bad experience (especially on a kids bday) is really poor customer service. Its sad cause we were all sooo looking forward to the experience and would likely have come back multiple times. But not anymore ! Such a waste of time. read more

Had my 3rd time here at the Sandbox. We were a group of 4. We tried the Curse of Davy Jones. This experience was free because of major glitches on our last visit last week. It's funny because that 2nd experience was free because of super major glitches with the Star Trek one in December a month ago. It appears there are always glitches with the equipment or software. They had to stop our game a couple of times because of problems. I asked if they were upgrading the software tonight and he said no. I asked because this was the cause of major problems last week. So ask if they're uploading on your chosen night! The Curse of Davy Jones is fun. You get to choose your character by shooting your favorite image from a few in front of you. This happens after you get your VR gear on. Pay attention to the directions when you have your gear on as it's a video that you can't rewind! I went with my grandson and his friend and they were laughing, talking and shooting each other the whole time so I didn't hear these directions and clues. There's a blue parrot telling you what to do so listen to him. Yes, it's hilarious when you see your characters with their weapons and you wanna mess around with that but unfortunately you don't have much time for that. Stay back to back always when the game starts as the skeleton bad guys come from all directions as well as demons coming out of the floor. It takes 3 shots to kill them. Pay attention to when you're out of bullets. There's a digital readout to the left of your pistol. Max is 10 then goes down as you shoot. Point the pistol down to reload. You can shoot stuff on the ship and that's fun as things blow up or move but you don't get anything for that. Keep track of your bullet count. I lost track so I killed less bad guys but I had the best accuracy at 72%. There's a red dot for aiming. Important point: I don't like violent games with the gore but these skeletons don't spurt blood which is better. There's also 2 big ghost bad guys that move across your play area. You can't kill these guys so just move out of their way or you'll incur damage. There'll be a ship appear which you sink with your 3 cannons. You light the cannon wicks with the torch or you can shoot the fuse. Shoot the cannon balls that come your way. The final bad guy will come up alongside your ship. Shoot his teeth with your pistols and cannons. Avoid his hand as he tries to smash you with it. When he dies you get your treasure! I like this game the best so far. Our group did Star Trek and Amber Sky 2088 previously. My 11 year old grandson said he liked Amber Sky 2088 most. He's a video gamer so take that for whatever it's worth. He likes to be a robot- but no faces visible so everyone looks the same. Conclusion: you'll have a blast for sure. It's worth 50$ each. Go have fun! PS: think of some funny names for yourselves and an overall team name before you arrive!! ( Star removed for too many glitches- I mean we were the only ones playing!) read more

What a fun experience! If you're looking for something fun to do, you need to check this place out at Totem Lake Village in Kirkland. They opened this location 2 days ago & the staff were so helpful and friendly! We played two VR games (which last around ~20 minutes each round). The Amber Sky which is a zombie vs robots game was a blast and so was the pirate ship one. Even though it was the second day, the staff were still getting used to all the troubleshooting which they did amazing at. Everyone was so friendly, especially our guide Daniel. What an INCREDIBLE experience!! Expensive... but incredible! We got Theo as our game master, and he was so chill and so fun! Couldn't have asked for a better facilitator, really. My younger brother and I played Amber Sky 2088. A word of warning: if you don't game or ride roller coasters or experience large doses of adrenaline regularly, most of these games will be VERY intense for you. They were for me! I totally thought I could handle it, but even though I knew it was fake, it was SO IMMERSIVE my brain fully believed there were monsters jumping right at my face and it totally triggered fight or flight response and a TSUNAMI of adrenaline for me. I pushed through it though, and I'm glad I did! just be aware that it will be a lot of adrenaline for your body at once. Luckily, if this is you, they have a couple game options that are much more chill and are not full of jump scares at all! read more

First time trying out a VR game and overall the experience was good. Even though I wrote more cons than pros below I had a good time! Pros: The staff was helpful, took time to explain everything in detail to us and made sure we got the sensors backpack vest etc. all in the right place and setup. Game was intense but also fun. We chose Deadwood Valley which is like a killing zombie game. Honestly at first I was freaked out but after a few minutes got more used to it. They show you a couple of videos of you playing the game and your "victory dance" at the end, they are fun to watch for sure. Cons: Headset doesn't quite fit me and I had to push it up several times during the game. That and the backpack were not light. Then you also have headphones on and a vest and sensors on your ankles and wrists, so, lots of things to wear for a short game. Some part of the game felt like a bug. E.g., when I touch my partner's shoulder to "revive" him, my hand isn't exactly on his shoulder. We were told kicking could work but I don't think so. Sometimes when the gun is reloading, the vibration feedback wasn't there so I couldn't tell whether it was loaded or not. And, when the zombie gets close to you it's hard to tell whether the shot worked or not. Moving around with a tight fitting headset left me very sweaty... I saw the staff clean the equipment in between games but I'm not sure how thorough that was. $50 for what felt like 25min or less game play isn't a great deal to me. read more

How are you supposed to get a refund? Nobody answers the phone when you call, the voicemail is full, email inboxes are not monitored. I don't agree with the business model of offering savings to book an additional session, just to not allow a cancellation. Friends of ours have a similar issue with not being able to contact the location. Makes no sense. Called support number and it's a google voice phone? Shady practices for sure. read more

We had a 10/10 experience. We made a reservation ahead of time because it was a Friday night, got in signed the waivers, got geared up and started the game. It definitely feels like you're in there. I've been here 6 times already and every session i come with a full group of 5-6 people just feels like its getting more worse. If you have an awful experience of teleporting through the place and sensors not working right (The whole game) they wont give a refund or offer a new game after repair. Past 3 times of coming here game keeps getting paused for something to get fixed and its still not working properly. I was told that i was teleporting because my equipment on me was low on battery. Yet no one offered another session with full battery and a normal experience. Also if you are reading this and want to make an appointment do not get Deadwood Mansion. It is the most boring one of all. Deadwood Valley is the best one in my opinion. read more

The game was easy to understand how to play. Fully entertained, had a blast playing the game with my kids.

I came here with a group of my coworkers for a team building outing. We all had such a great time! This was my first time doing any kind of virtual reality and I didn't know what to expect. The game itself was intense and had me sweating hard! The staff was very accommodating. Kids had fun eventually, but customer service is for sh**. We paid A LOT more for a ,"private room" for our kid's birthday. When we arrived no staff knew anything about it and blew us off as they tended to other patrons. After waiting AN HOUR past our appointment time I finally complained. The "private room" was just an alcove in between two game rooms where our 15 guests were stuffed into. There's more that made out experience less-than-stellar but I shall not rant about it anymore. read more

Not only did we have to wait over an hour after our paid and scheduled reservation time, but we have yet to receive our promised video and selfie. Emails go unanswered and calls go straight to voicemail with a full inbox so messages are unable to be left. The experience itself was enjoyable but the customer support has been god awful, won't be considering a return until this issue is solved. read more

We have been here twice. First time there was technical difficulty that took 15 mins to fix. Luckily it was during the weekday and the gal told us it will not be counted against us. However, we came on a Saturday and it was busy. The guy who took us to our room was useless. Didn't help my children with their gear and just stood there. Mr Useless had technical difficulty which seems to be a chronic problem here. This time it took 20 mins to fix and this shorten up us playing our game. Midway through us playing he ended the game. Felt really jipped and I asked him about it. He told me that there was nothing he could could do. Given the cost of what we spent here and their tech issues, it's not worth coming here until they get it straightened out. read more

The reservation system is not working at all. We reserved a spot for last week, but we got notified on the same day that the reservation is not valid anymore because one room is down. We are told we got rescheduled to this week, and today we 6 people arrived at the store finding out we don't actually have a reservation! It's a clear management mistake, and they told us we could do it at 6:15 pm instead of 4:15. However after 20 minutes, we were told again 6:15 is not even working because someone else took this spot. We could only "schedule" for next week and hope for the best. We got no compensation or credit for such a long series of nightmare, not even a free session. The reservation does not mean you actually reserved, for 3 times in a row we got rescheduled on the same day after we came to the store, and the attitude of the staff and manager make us feel not respected. read more
