We go to Sand Hill Berries often in the summer, we meet friends and family there for lunch and drinks. Although they have a limited selection, everything is delicious. Is this the best pie I've ever had? I think so but don't tell my aunts lol. I got the Peach Raspberry pie from the Mt. Lebanon Farmers Market and wow, I'm in love!!! It's sweet but not too sweet and you can really taste each fruit separately but they make a great pair. I am usually not even a big crust fan but the flavor is to die for. I'm nervous that I'm going to eat this entire pie by myself lol. We also tried a chocolate cookie with raspberry and white chocolate chips- delish! I HATE to leave bad reviews and often choose no review over a bad 1. I have been enjoying Sand Hill Berries since I was a kid. As a vegetarian - I was always ecstatic when I would see their tables at local rib cook offs. As I've gotten older, I've loved stopping at their storefront and stocking up. I stopped at our local Farmer's market yesterday and couldn't resist the sound of the raspberry peach pie. One of my favorite things about Sand Hill was that their pies always were stuffed with actual fruit with very little "goop." Ratios are important to me. I cut into the pie today and there is not a single raspberry. I literally took the top off the pie and searched. I also am questioning if the peaches are fresh, but I thinking they are canned. It's disappointing considering it is peach season. Even peaches are very sporadically included. The pie - with delicious bottom and top crust is literally all the weird jelly, goopy stuff inside. I was anticipating fresh berries and slices of peaches. I am SO thankful that I purchased this for ourselves and didn't plan on taking it anywhere as I would have been horrified. read more

This is one of my favorite local hidden gems to get some of the best fresh baked goods with the home grown Sand Hill Berries. I highly recommend their chocolate raspberry cookies, and any of their pies. (Make sure you AT LEAST try the raspberry! Go early though, or order ahead...they sale out..FAST!) They are to die for! Also, don't neglect trying out some of their home made vinaigrettes. HIGHLY recommend the raspberry in this, as well! This place is amazing! If you're going to go make sure you save some time to roam around. There is a market with pantry goods, candy, cookies, fresh pies, berries and more! There is also two small stands you can order food and dessert to eat there. There are also tables with umbrellas and even live music at times. The pasta salad is the best I've ever had and I love that it's made with mini shell pasta! So far I've had their turkey sandwich with pasta salad, French fries, the berries and cream, and their pie with ice cream. Everything I've had had been great so far! The chocolate raspberry pie pairs great with any berry pie. There's also a vineyard and winery there also. They will allow you to sample several wines and you can get a glass or a bottle. I'm not sure what the difference between this place and Greendance Winery... We stopped here while visiting other sites in the area, found it on Yelp. Our visit was nice, wine tasting and lunch, but besides being a pleasant place to spend a long lunch hour, there wasn't that much else to do. From the food "shacks" we got the Summer Berry Salad which was good, as was the Raspberry Cheesecake, and a couple Frog Truffles from the shop. I enjoyed looking at the goats and listening to the live music. The shop took all of 5 minutes to browse and then we were done. I thought there would be a tour of some sort or at least a nursery shop to purchase plants. Food was a bit pricey. read more

My favorite bakery in the world. yes I said WORLD. It is THAT GOOD. This country bakery is part of a working farm. The barns are painted sage green with purple roofs. Big old German wooden barns. Then there are chickens and goats. Surrounding for acres upon acres and acres are rows of berry bushes as far as you can see. They raise red raspberries, black raspberries, currants, strawberries and other produce. They started their business selling red raspberry claret to Williams and Sonoma. Pour a couple teaspoons in the bottom of a glass, add ice, add 7 up... then think Life is Beautiful as you drink one heavenly potion. I love their red raspberry pie and have requested it for every birthday of my adult life. Their raspberry cookies are also to die for. When I worked at the nearby high school I would stop by every Friday and buy a few cookies. They also make jams, jellies and a raspberry compote that is divine over vanilla ice cream. This is a very kid friendly place. In the spring you can ask for a bottle of warm baby goat formula and go feed a baby goat out in the pen for free. They have a lovely flower garden and you can cut a huge vase for 5 bucks in June. They give you a jug and a pair of scissors and just ask that you bring the scissors back into the bakery. I can't say enough good things about it. If you are in Westmoreland County, do yourself a favor. Recently they've branched out to include a winery on their grounds. I used to bake what I and many others considered darned good pies. Then my husband started bringing home Sand Hill Berries' pies. I know when I've been bested! Imagine perfect crust encasing the freshest, thickest layer of berries you've ever beheld in a pie! Red raspberry pies, blackberry pies, delectable blueberry & a happy concoction called bumbleberry pie that are all so amazing. The Sand Hill Berry folks also bake possibly the best dark chocolate raspberry cookie known to mankind. Warning: Once you share one with a friend, they will demand them for life! Just go buy a dozen or so & watch them disappear. Sand Hill Berries is a working farm with an incredibly picturesque setting complete with a few cute baby animals and gorgeous flowers. A great place to dine outdoors on fresh pie and homemade ice cream in the summer. They even have their own winery. What a great find this place is and no, I don't bake pies anymore. My family & I took a trip to Greensburg to visit a family friend & wanted to partake in a "fall activity" while we were out there. We did a little researching & discovered this place. It is not the farm I was expecting, but it was really nice. There was a bridal shower going on outside- which I wasn't expecting. They had live music (a really good band, too) & it wasn't overwhelmingly crowded. There is a winery right in the farm & a bakery, too. We stopped in the bakery & I picked up a small jar of homemade "Country Fruit" jam, mhm! Next, we headed over to the bakery. My dad ordered a slice of cherry pie & I ordered a slice of cheesecake with a raspberry topping. My dad loved the pie & the cheesecake was AWESOME. The raspberry topping was fresh & the cheesecake was fluffy. We checked out the winery next. They had a large selection of wine themed gifts- & we found a few things that we just couldn't pass up. I tried multiple wines (6 tastes are complimentary) & loved the Niagara the most. This place is adorable- it's not that big & it's pretty simple, but it's cozy & comforting & if it wasn't so cold when we visited, I would have loved to have hung out longer & listened to the band all night. read more

At best. Supposedly known for their berry pies. The pie filling was near excellent but the crust was downright poor. As my wife and I sat down and were eating we both simultaneously said the crust is like A&P crust from the 60's. Terrible. Most of you are too young to remember the supermarket of our day. Love this place!!! I have always been a fan of Raspberry pie, since my grandfather had several gardens full. When I moved to Westmoreland County we spotted the sign and had to check it out, and glad we did. Not only do they have an indoor bakery, but they have an outside stand w\ seating and umbrellas where you can purchase pie & cheesecake by the slice. This is the place we take our families when they visit us. Just recently, we celebrated my dads birthday & decided to go a different route and order him a strawberry cheesecake. I cannot tell you how much everyone loved this! It was the greatest anyone had ever tasted!! If you are from the Pittsburgh area, this place is definitely worth even an hour drive! For the past 6-7 years I have visited Sand Hill on July 4th while I visit family in Western PA. It is a highlight. This year, after being told we had to wear a mask by an employee who, of course, had her mask down around her chin, we decided to leave after being there for 5 minutes. Words just aren't adequate to begin to describe what a great place this is! First of all the setting is idyllic. Picturesque family farm, acres and acres of berries, flowering trees,cool shade to sit and relax... Absolutely ideal. The setting alone is reason enough to come here. But there's more. They bake. They take those fresh berries and bake. Now, we're not talking ordinary baking. Oh my goodness no! I guarantee you these are the best pies and cookies you've ever had in your life!! I can hear you scoff I know, I've heard others do the same. Until they tasted. Now they all agree. Best. Baked. Goods. Ever. No joke. I know, your Amish grandmother has a passed down pie recipe that you think is the worlds best. It's not. Or you Aunt Mabel makes cookies you think none can top. Oh, my friends, how wrong you are. It's simply not possible to top their pies and cookies! Not possible! One taste and you're ruined for life. I've been coming here for years. Saw them begin as berry farmers experimenting with launching the bakery. Saw them expand to get the berry pickers - machines that go out and shake the bushes to collect those delicious morsels. Talked to the owners and got tours of their planned expansion and the resultant additions and processes. For years we would come here at least once a week every summer for "lunch" which consisted of sitting outside under the umbrellas with a huge slice of raspberry or blackberry pie with a scoop of their homemade raspberry ice cream on top. I never wanted to go back to the office. I would buy pies to take home and share. Anyone who had a bite placed an order for when I went there next. Each pie has to weigh 5 pounds! Stuffed full of berries. An unparalleled dining experience. And cookies? Imagine if you will a soft saucer sized chocolate cookie full of raspberries that awakens your taste buds like a shot of espresso in the morning. Best ever. I would take out of town executives here for lunch only to have them say OMG! I made the mistake of bringing a few cookies back to my Pittsburgh office. One taste and they all hounded me wanting to know when my next trip was. I became a courier. So be forewarned. They do sell their stuff at some of the local farmers markets and festivals. Try it. Great place, amazing pies, have been visiting this place for years. It has been 8 years, so my family and I were very much looking forward to having pies from Sand Hill Berries. The chocolate raspberry pie was as delectable as we remembered it to be...except when we were down to our last slice, I found a dark 8-inch wavy hair within the raspberry layer as I lifted up my fork. We enjoyed (almost) the whole pie; However, this discovery tainted the experience. Come to think of it, when we ordered other desserts in their café, the way our food was handled was very unsanitary. So I would recommend this place if you want delicious desserts, but do not care about hairs in food or desserts being touched by bare hands that have handled money or whatever else. read more

I love Sand Hill Berries- Ive been coming here for years and I feel like its still somewhat of a secret. They have a lot of fun events throughout the year so make sure to check their website. They have a small store where you can buy all kinds of jams, treats, cookies, pies, cook books, etc. You can then walk over to the garden where they have plenty of seating in the shade with a dessert stand serving some delicious pie- try the raspberry or the chocolate raspberry...OMG! Even further over you can goto the greendance winery and order some lunch, shop some more, and do a wine tasting (I reviewed in more detail on the green dance yelp page). If I would have written this review last year, or the year before, or any of the past ten or twelve years I've been enjoying Sand Hill Berries, it would have earned five stars....each and every time. I made my first visit of the year just three weeks ago, on a picturesque fall day, a Sunday afternoon. The grounds are beautifully kept, and every year they make tasteful improvements. There was a band playing a variety of pop music. Frankly, they were kind of mediocre, but there is no cover charge and they do not detract from the experience. And even with the occasional sour note, they contributed to the low-key, but festive atmosphere. If I'm not mistaken, its only been a few years since the entertainment "pavilion" was added. A few years back, they added local wine to their offerings, and give free samples. Most of them are on the sweet side, and make decent dessert wines, but they aren't putting a scare into Napa Valley any time soon. But neither is any other Pennsylvania wine maker, to be fair. All in all, its a nice addition. But that brings me to my BIG concern. I dream of their pies. I love pies, and I have a place in my gastronomical hall of fame for the Sand Hill Berry Farm pies. But, the ones served on this day were absolutely GENERIC. I crust was still quite good, but the filling is not the same as before. It is much firmer and "jellified." Maybe less berries, but I can't say that for sure. But I can say the berries are much less prominent due to the overbearing presence of the gelatin they were suspended within. Previously, without exception, the filling of the pies tumbled out and messily spilled onto the plate, intermingling with the streamers of slowly melting vanilla ice cream. This year, no dice. I didn't even finish mine, so I will fess up to being not only disappointed but quite surprised. Every member of my party had the same impression, that something has changed, it wasn't as good as before. Frankly, quite a big drop off in quality, on this day at least. I asked the young lady in the snack bar if the recipe had changed. She was polite and professional, and generally downplayed it while admitting that "when they are expecting a big crowd" they "sometimes" will make a change that allows the pies to "hold a firmer set." I've always found the staff and management of this establishment to be very welcoming and friendly. This year was no exception. Even though they are growing bigger every year, they haven't lost the "personal touch" from a service standpoint. But, now I must wonder, with the addition of entertainment and the alcoholic beverage sales (which appears to now be a substantial part of their business) and corresponding growth in patronage, have they lost their focus, and taken some short cuts on the products that got them started and made all of this possible in the first place? I don't want to beat this place up, because I really love it, and want it to be as good as it has always been. So I conclude with this plea: "Please do what you must in order to follow you original pie recipes, so that generations to come may induct you into their "Gastronomic Hall of Fame too." read more

We visited for the first time and have been back 2 times already. They have a great garden and wine store. The berry pies are terrific but have not tried the apple yet. The atmosphere reminds us of Northern California wine country. We are hoping to have a party of some sort there. read more
