So you have to look for this place when you go. It's in the backside of a strip off Granby St. They have a deck when the weather is nice. It's literally a hole in the wall and I LOVE it!!! My wife and I came in here for lunch one day and have been hooked ever since. They have a bar and tacos. BOOM! What else do you need in life? I have only been for lunch and some to go tacos in the evening so I can't speak to the scene at night but I can only imagine it's awesomeness! The owner Christian is also an artist and has his work posted around the bar (for sale too!!). He is an awesome dude! Very welcoming! Kids...I have them and bring them places...this place I've brought them for lunch. I've brought them in to grab to go for the evenings as well. Christian said they are always welcome which is awesome. I wouldn't bring kids after evening time though just to respect other's bar time. I used to go to bars at night and kids are the last thing I'd want to see. Alright if you made it this far you probably want to know about the tacos and drinks. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the margaritas! Tacos: try ALL of them (including the black bean option). Try them with everything especially the chili lime sauce! An elevated American Taco. Simple, straight to the point, and unique in its own right is how these tacos are executed. There certainly is no comparison to any other tacos. Come with no expectations. A friend and I planned dinner and a comedy show. She recommended Sanctuary. I remember seeing pics and reviews always wanting to try, but also waiting until the novelty wears off. Forgot all about Sanctuary until she mentioned. I knocked the Chicken BBQ name before I tried it. Like why have a Chicken BBQ? And why would I go to this place just for tacos? The establishment is small and tucked in a corner. Loved the vibe!! They had I think it was The Lost Boys movie playing. How cool is that!? It was consistent with the ambiance and name. There are a couple of booths, a row of seats at bar, and outdoor seating. We sat at the bar with the awesome bartender. I didn't catch his name, but he can make some good a$$ drinks!! I tried Chicken BBQ, Beef, and Organic Black Beans. I loved them ALL!!!! I LOVE a good CRUNCHY taco, so all of mine were crunchy. The tacos were beautifully snuggled with care in their taco stand trays. These weren't tacos that were just slopped together. No, they were meticulously assembled. I started with the organic beans taco. I didn't use any sauce in my first couple of bites so I can fully assess in its presented form. Wow! All of the flavors and textures married well. Not sure if I was hungry, but I was sooo happy. My friend and I started dancing in our barstools. My first couple of bites were delicious. Then, I took a couple bites of the Chicken BBQ. Still so strange to me because it's BBQ, but ohhh....yes!! The chicken had the right amount of moisture that juices weren't dripping down my arm. It wasn't too sweet and the bbq flavor wasn't overpowering that it forgets it's a taco. I thought the flavors all married very well. I'm a spicy saucy chick, so I used a lot of the bottled sauce for added kick. I especially enjoyed the tomatillo sauce and pineapple habanero. I used them both. Then, I tried the ground beef. The flavors were also delicious! The ground beef was just a minuscule bit on the dry side (prob not worth mentioning), but not a deal breaker because there was some moisture and seasonings enhanced beef quality. I honestly could have eaten another beef. The protein to veggie ratio of all tacos were well balanced & ingredients packed into the shell. The one thing my friend and I were impressed with all of the tacos were that the crunchy shells did not crack!! Now how in the crunchy tacos is that executed!!!? LOL l'll have to work on that trick at home folks. Until then, I will be going back for more. Oh, can't forget about the margaritas!! Absolutely PERFECT! I do like the option of both a hard and soft shell tortilla. You get the crunch texture of a hard shell without all the filling falling out. My boyfriend and I tried out this taco spot last week. We were craving some tasty tacos and fresh margs (who doesn't need that pick up mid week, ya feel?). I appreciate that they have indoor and outdoor seating albeit the space is quite small. My boyfriend and I sat up at the bar. The bartender was unamused by our inquiries, but humored us for the hour we spent at Sanctuary. Specially, I asked about their house made liquor. She stated it was "their house special" and thus, of course she recommended it. was a speciality tequila which I tried in my margarita. I admire anyone who makes local, small batch liquor, but I can't say I was enthused by the taste. It was very floral and herbal - too sweet for my palette. My boyfriend's margarita with regular mid shelf tequila was fine - nothing to write home about but may provide reprieve when you need a happy hour fix. We ordered three tacos each. I am gluten free so I asked for corn tortillas and found out they only offer hard shell corn tortillas. Our food arrived timely which I can respect, but the taste was definitely disappointing. They reminded me a lot of the tacos I grew up eating in the Midwest i.e hamburger with taco seasoning, iceberg lettuce, cheddar cheese etc. Overall, I can't say I recommend. Sanctuary has a very simplistic concept that is executed very well. They specialize only in two things ... tacos and alcoholic beverages, but hey, after a stressful day at work, that's really all you need. All four variations of their tacos are absolutely delicious (BBQ Chicken, BBQ Pork, Ground Beef, & Black Bean). My favorites are the BBQ chicken & the BBQ pork. I get them with soft taco shells and customize them with works because all of their toppings are always fresh. Speaking of fresh, I also really enjoy their house-made margaritas made with freshly squeezed lime juice. They're both flavorful and strong; it only takes about one or two to have you sitting right after a stressful day at work. This place is a joint in the best way. Sanctuary's owner created a thoughtful ordering system that invites diner participation. Once seated at one of the two inside tables, a large stretch of bar seats, or one of the outdoor picnic tables, we each received a 4x4 slip of paper and a pen to make our orders, from drinks to food. The drinks are fun and experiment with different ingredients, but the food, oh my, is fantastic. We three chose a variety of tacos with delicious ingredients wedged into the Sanctuary shell: a hard corn shell nestled in cheese and then enveloped in a flour shell. AHHHMAZING flavors! The more downtown Norfolk location was where we visited a couple weekends ago during our "staycation" for the weekend and Sanctuary was our first stop and a newfound dive for us. We mainly ordered cocktails and walked away with some of Christian's artwork for our home, but the tacos smelt wonderful and looked mouthwatering. We have a kid-free weekend coming up and are hoping to go back to have a late lunch or early dinner and drinks. Here's the deal, this place is awesome... (Really, I would like to rate this place 3.5 stars) However, I have visited this place twice so far and it seems once it gets busy all mayhem breaks loose. With three options-bowl, hard shell or tortilla, you then proceed to the various options for proteins, toppings and extras to work on creating what you crave. Though it may be simple, the menu packs a punch as you get to build exactly what you want and try various combinations to find that perfect fit for you! On our visit, we opted to each try a couple things and liked everything we got! However, we had one taco that stood out above the rest to us and was the clear winner! That was the BBQ Chicken! I've actually never heard of this taco place before. We had a girls' night on a Friday evening. We were looking for some tacos. Of course, you know your girl Yelped tacos...bam! Sanctuary was just around the corner. First of all, let me preface by saying we had a party bus. Parking was a bit tricky, but we were able to park for a bit next to the fence in front of the gym. They had seating available out front. As I walked in, I was very surprised to see how dark and decor-less it was inside. Remember, we're in post-COVID times so it was appropriate. The bathroom was my first destination and I had to walk down a long corridor that was just as dark. They weren't really busy and there was only a couple of people sitting at the bar, so I asked how we would order and a menu. She was super sweet and handed me a piece of paper to place my taco order. Fast forward 30-40 minutes, our party of 9 women all received our taco orders to go. Seriously, probably the BEST TACOS I've had in a very long time! Cool, hipster vibe in the Neon District of Norfolk. It's not on the main street so you need to look a little bit for it. Indoor seating is minimal but there's cute picnic tables and umbrellas outside. Street style tacos with bbq chicken, black bean, ground beef or bbq pork options. I got a black bean and bbq chicken taco and the black bean one was awesome - bbq was different but not bad. The bbq had a kick and the portions were big. It is like the secret club that you've only heard about but don't know if it's true or not :) This place is TRUE to the core. As soon as I walked in the door, the sounds of chit chat, laughter and the smell of incredible food hits you. It is an extremely inviting place once you get in the door. I was greeted by a really cool gentleman and he gave me the basic lay out. I found a cozy spot at the bar and found out he was one of the owners. The other owner came out to greet me and gave me the back story of the place, and his passion/drive just made me that more excited. He showed me how to order and what I would need to do for this and that. It is super easy and I actually love the way you mark your order on the paper. The food was out in a very reasonable time. I tried both the hard and soft shell, with chicken on one and beef on the other. Sadly I can't do spicy, but they had a whole tray of different hot sauces you could use. I love the fact that they are made to order. So you don't have to get a big plate of something you will not finish. I like to have food, then enjoy some drinks and convo with friends and then order more food. It is a win/win here and you are guaranteed to LOVE IT! They have a nice set up in minimal space, but that is something that is comforting to me. The patio area offers smokers a place to sit and enjoy their time too. Or just a space to get outside and enjoy the sunshine while you hang out. All in all, this place is amazing and has so much potential. Sanctuary is the newest bar and eatery to open in the NEON district. It opened in March of this year, tucked away in a hideaway location at the intersection of Addison Street and Mosely Lane. On street parking is available on Addison. A separate parking lot is available in the rear, adjacent to an outdoor patio deck with four tables. The entrance is a plain gray door with a tiny sign bearing its name. The dimensions of the building measure a long and narrow 10 feet by 80 feet. A couple of tables and a long row of bar stools await you on the right as you enter. Four overhead TVs play music videos and old movies. Candles light the place up at night for a Gothic feel. The walls visually explode with the art work of local artist and restaurant partner C.S. Simmons, featuring portrait photo prints with his unique artistic touches and edgy style. They radiate with a kinetic energy that is eye catching and mesmerizing. The music is loud and lively, creating a vibe that is upbeat and energizing. The servers are friendly, engaging, and make me feel at home, even for an old baby boomer like myself, while they cater to a predominantly younger crowd. Tacos are the only type of food served here. When it comes to tacos, I prefer authentic Mexican street tacos, which are not the style here. So, I had to set my personal biases aside and judge them on their own merits. They come with your choice of two types of shells, namely hard corn shells and soft flour shells. Four choices of protein are available, which are BBQ Chicken, BBQ Pork, Ground Beef, and finally, Organic Black Beans as a vegan option. A variety of toppings is available, including Avocado and Cole Slaw for a modest extra cost. When placing your order, you are handed a slip of paper and check off the types of shells, proteins, and toppings you want. You then hand it back to your server, and they take it from there. I ordered the following during my first visit: ONE BBQ PORK TACO IN A HARD CORN SHELL & ONE BBQ CHICKEN TACO IN A SOFT FLOUR SHELL: My chosen toppings were Lettuce, Tomato, Onions, Jalapenos, Cilantro, Chili Lime Sauce, Microgreens, and Avocado for and additional 25 cents. This combination didn't work for me. Their Chili Lime Sauce, which is a pinkish sauce squiggled on top of the tacos, contains mayonnaise, which I didn't know at the time. Mayonnaise has never agreed with me, and it sometimes makes me nauseous. Its presence overwhelmed the tacos and left a bad taste in my mouth. Fortunately, I managed to plow through them without without incident. I asked my server about this sauce afterwards, and she confirmed that it does contains mayonnaise. MY RATING: NONE. It's not their fault that I can't handle mayonnaise. So, I decided to move forward with a return visit and the intent to avoid their Chili Lime Sauce in the future. They might consider noting on their menu that this sauce does contains mayonnaise, for the sake of others who may have a sensitivity to it, and especially for the vegans who avoid it altogether. During three other visits, I ordered the following, each with the same toppings as before, minus the Chili Lime Sauce. TWO BBQ CHICKEN HARD SHELL TACOS: These tacos delivered a hearty full bodied corn taste and crunchy texture. The flavors of my chosen toppings worked well together to make my taste buds sing. These are my favorite so far. My Rating: 5 Stars. THREE BBQ CHICKEN SOFT SHELL TACOS: The flavors still delivered, but I like the hard shells a little more. Overall, I find their hard shells more flavorful and their soft shells more filling. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. ONE GROUND BEEF SOFT TACO AND ONE ORGANIC BLACK BEAN SOFT TACO: The soft flour shells were a tad dry this time around, and the protein fillings were on the skimpy side. While still flavorful, they left me wanting more. My Rating: 3 Stars. This brings me to another suggestion, which is to add an option for an extra portion of protein on their menu for a thicker taco, perhaps for a dollar more. They offer a tasty array of hot sauces to enhance their tacos.Their house label Sanctuary Hail Mary Taco Sauce delivers a mildly spicy level of heat with a nice hint of smokiness. It is manufactured for Sanctuary and distributed by the Nu-Land Hot Stuff Company in North Carolina, which uses locally grown hot peppers. For a spicier kick, they offer Purple Pam's Kiss of Death and Toxie's Elixir. Each of these sauces are available for sale to take home. During a future visit, I plan to try their signature cocktail, named the Purple Haze. It is made with Dr. Stoner's Fresh Herb Vodka, which is hand crafted and bottled at the Chesapeake Bay Distillery in Virginia Beach, and mixed with Blueberry Red Bull. My overall experience here is a prime example why I don't like to write a review after only one visit. What could have been a hasty negative review has rallied to a positive 4-star review. Definitely a bar that happens to have tacos, rather than a taco place that has a bar. It's small and low key with a cool vibe. It's nice that the tacos are build-your-own. However, the tacos are pretty on par with Taco Bell. read more

Was introduced to this place by my boy. Nice lil small spot. It gets packed quick inside but they do have a small area outside to sit and eat too. The guys inside that work there are very friendly. The way you order is interesting. You're handed a piece of paper and from there you build your taco however you want. My favorite one is the bbq pulled pork taco. Super good and they have a decent selection of hot sauces to choose from. Their happy hour is pretty good and most wells are only about $2.50. Definitely a nice place to get a quick bite if you're in the mood for tacos or just wanna hang out with a small group of friends. read more
