While my friend and I were at a nearby flea market, we stumbled upon Sanctuary since we were looking for a quick bite to eat. As soon as we walked in, we headed to the back and asked for menus. To our surprise, we were given a small sheet that was their "menu" and were told to select what we wanted to order by checking off whichever taco or taco bowl we wanted. Very interesting concept. As we looked over the options, I decided on the soft shell Pulled Pork Taco, the BBQ Chicken Taco and the Mahi Taco. After ordering, we were able to sit wherever we wanted and they would bring our food to us so we decided to sit at the bar. While there, I ordered the Mango Honey Habanero Margarita and unfortunately it was extremely sour. My friend and I could barely get it down. The bartender was very sweet and attempted to fix my friend's drink to make it taste better but it still tasted pretty sour to us. The tacos were brought out about 20 minutes after we ordered. All of the tacos were pretty good but my favorite was the Mahi Taco. It was seasoned very well and was absolutely delicious. Since I'm a sauce girl, I added some of their Honey Habanero Taco Sauce to it and it enhanced the flavor even more. Unfortunately, the only downside was the soft shells were a bit hard, my friend didn't even eat all of hers. Overall, this place seems to be nice for folks that want a quick and simple taco. I did see they have a small area where they sell fudge as well. The music they were playing was definitely a vibe and they have a couple of foosball tables for anyone wanting to have some fun. I'm not sure if I would return but if you're in the area and want a decent taco, definitely check them out.

A friend and I stopped by Sanctuary while out at the Norfolk Night time flea market for a bite to eat and cocktail and loved the laid-back, fun vibe of the space. The atmosphere is super cute with TVs, foosball, and a great outdoor seating area--definitely a nice spot to catch a game or hang with friends. I tried two tacos: the BBQ chicken and the ground beef. The BBQ chicken taco was definitely the standout--flavorful with a tangy sauce and a perfectly soft shell. Unfortunately, the ground beef taco fell a little flat in comparison--it lacked seasoning and the shell had dried out a bit, which took away from the experience. I also tried the mango habanero honey margarita. It had a fun kick but leaned a little too sour for my taste. I asked for extra agave to balance it out, which helped. Overall, Sanctuary has a cool vibe and seems like a fun bar hangout, especially for drinks and games. I might come back for the atmosphere, but probably not for the food.

This was such a pleasant surprise! The ambiance was eclectic and really nice. The restaurant was tucked away and hard to find but it was a great time once we got in. We were greeted by the bartender, and provided an explanation on the handwritten menu card. The food was really good. The pulled pork taco and the beef taco were really good! The BBQ chicken taco was not my favorite, only because the chicken literally tasted like I was at a BBQ spot and that taste mixed with taco fixings was a bit off. Offers great drink options and was informed about Happy hour from 4-8 pm. Will definitely be coming back

Location: This spot is in a good location for people who have children. I wouldn't recommend this place during the winter because indoor seating is limited. However, there's a playground just outside that can be utilized during the summer. Vibes: The Sanctuary definitely has its own vibe. It's very baresque, and there are a variety of alcoholic drinks you can choose from. It's dark inside with list of canvas art, that all have a similar look. It's not very busy during the day especially in the winter, so you can get away with eating inside. Food: As far as food goes, this place wasn't expensive at all. I ordered a taco bowl which was filling. I will say it's bar food and not anything compared to a Mexican restaurant taco. However, you're given a menu which you can choose what you want in your taco or bowl. This can be protein and toppings. The food was fresh, and that made it feel light and nutritious. It was missing some flavor was a little lackluster for seasoning. The hot sauce at the table were good, but not a personal favorite. Overall: This place had cheap food and alcohol. It will fill you up, and you can enjoy yourself and have a quick drink if you have kids. I would not come back, but it was a nice experience to try.

Highly recommended if you're a taco fan! $4 tacos!? And they're super stuffed! I recommend the BBQ chicken tacos and make sure u add Cole slaw or at least get the slaw as a side... so good! Sanctuary is a local bar.. definitely gives neighborhood bar vibes. This is a small establishment but there is indoor and outdoor seating! The staff is super nice and attentive. There was a good mix of people here - all ages and race. I love a good culture mix wherever I go! I could come here alone after a long day for some me time or a group and enjoy myself either way. Good vibes! Will definitely be back!

Literally our fav taco place and we talk about going often (even though we live in VB). Went for the 1st time when I was pregnant and we just took our son back and we loved just as much! Especially fond our the mountain of cilantro they put on the tacos. Drink menu has excellent & fun options. Has an edgy vibe but everyone that works there is the biggest sweetheart. Definitely driving out again sooooon

Very enjoyable grunge bar and taco stop this Tuesday for lunch and beers. We sat at the long and narrow bar. There are benches and parking out back. I went with two ground beef tacos and my wife had two taco bowls, one bean and one ground beef. Food was average, but I thoroughly enjoyed the vibe, the music and the four wide screen TVs, showing silent YouTube videos. My wife was not as impressed as I was with the venue, but this is my review and, hence, my rating. BTW: service was attentive and friendly.

My 3rd visit was for a late lunch with a coworker. We were promptly seated at a table for 4 even though it was the two of us which was appreciated since the 2 tops are a little small. We again enjoyed our tacos and guac. I had cauliflower rice as a side. All the tacos were full of yummy goodness. They also had a taco Tuesday special available. I made sure to drop my business card in the fishbowl. I noticed they had a place you could drop off letters to Santa outside which was nice for the holidays. There is little street parking available outside the restaurant so it's best to park in the free parking garage not far away.

Our server came to the table quickly and brought chips and salsa and took our drink orders. The menu was plentiful and prices were reasonable. They have a nice little happy hour menu. Food service was timely and everything tasted good. Things I didn't love: The noise level is a bit loud. Certainly great for large groups and families, but not an intimate, low noise environment. The ambiance is bright lighting with white tile floors. I suppose I enjoy an aesthetic that is not so stark and bright. On the plus side, it was clean!

I live about 30+ mins away but I remember the food being very good last time, so I didn't mind the drive at all. We were greeted by the host as soon as we walked in and were seated right away. Our server was wonderful. She was very pleasant and helped us with some of the questions we had regarding the menu items. We started with the Fresh Tableside Guacamole and it tasted great! We did order it with a "medium" spice level and it wasn't spicy at all but other than that, it was very good. Since the Street Tacos caught our eye, we both decided on those. We ordered the Al Pastor, Barbacoa, Carnitas, Chorizo, Camarón, Nopales and Lengua. The tacos were served with a variety of different sauces, ranging from sweet and mild to very spicy. Most of the tacos were delicious, our favorite was the Al Pastor, Barbacoa, and Camarón. We weren't a fan of the Lengua, it was very dry, chewy and unflavored. Overall, we had a great experience. Our margaritas were amazing as well! I love the vibe of this restaurant and the food and service is always wonderful.

I ordered the cheesy birria taco plate, which came with three tacos, consomé, rice, and beans. I also got a mango margarita because, well, it's Taco Tuesday. It only seemed appropriate. The food was really good! The birria tacos were exactly what I wanted them to be. Cheesy, flavorful, and satisfying, with a delicious consomé for dipping. The rice and beans were good as well, and I was very happy with my meal. The mango margarita, on the other hand, wasn't my favorite. It tasted like it was made with some sort of premade sour mix rather than fresh ingredients. Definitely not what I'd consider a craft margarita, but to be fair, I wasn't expecting one either. It was fine for what it was, just not something I'd be particularly excited to order again. Our server was Giselle, and she was attentive enough throughout the meal. I do have one small service-related gripe, though, and this is something that bothers me at restaurants in general. Once we'd finished eating, our table was cleared, and then... nothing. No check, no explanation, no "Can I get you anything else?" Just the assumption that we'd figure out the next step ourselves, I suppose. Eventually, when Giselle came back around, we asked about paying and learned that we were supposed to pay at the counter. Which is perfectly fine! I have absolutely no issue with that setup. But how were we supposed to know? It would have been nice to hear something as simple as, "No rush, but whenever you're ready, you can pay up front." It's a small thing, but I think those little moments of communication make a difference in the overall dining experience. A little reading of the room goes a long way. As for the atmosphere, I really enjoyed it! The music was great, with a hip-hop and R&B vibe that made the restaurant feel lively and fun. I'm not sure if that's their usual playlist or something specific to Taco Tuesday, but either way, I was here for it. We were seated right away when we arrived around 6 PM, but the restaurant definitely started filling up as the evening went on. It was noticeably busier by the time we were finishing our meal. One thing worth mentioning is that we were told Taco Tuesday comes with a 90-minute table limit. That wasn't an issue for us at all, but it's something to keep in mind if you're a particularly slow eater or planning to settle in for a long evening of tacos, drinks, and conversation. Apparently, Taco Tuesday comes with a countdown clock! Overall, I enjoyed my visit to El Rey 2. The birria tacos were delicious, the atmosphere was fun, and the music was right up my alley. The margarita could have been better, and there was a minor opportunity for improvement with the service, but neither would keep me from returning. I'd definitely come back, especially for those birria tacos!

For my pickup order, I had a taco salad with a side of rice, and it was hands-down amazing. I also ordered a watermelon fresca, which was so flavorful and clearly made in-house. You can really taste the freshness. I was told they make their tortillas in-house as well, so I ordered a side of those just to try--and they were excellent. Everything was packed with great care for takeout, neatly wrapped and organized. I also appreciated that the pico de gallo was served on the side, which kept everything fresh and well-balanced. The only small downside is that they don't offer a traditional salad dressing for the taco salad, but fresh lime works perfectly and still keeps it very enjoyable. On a separate delivery order a few days later, I tried their birria tacos with a side of rice and another fresca. Again, everything arrived fresh and flavorful.
