We have now made San Juan a regular place for dinner when driving to the Outer Banks. Our first visit was not that great, but we returned a year ago and found it to be a much better experience. On our first visit my carnitas were kind of dry and maybe a little stale. I decided to try them again and this time they were excellent, and I wanted to set the record straight. They were moist and tender with great flavor. I certainly did not intend to consume the entire platter, but somehow could not resist. Covington remains our stopping point going east and is also a good place for lunch when headed back west. San Juan will remain our place to eat. This must be one of the better Mexican places around and is certainly conveniently located. It is always very busy. If we arrive for lunch before they open, there are always people waiting. read more

I love this place, I have only been a couple of times, but it is a true Mexican restuarnt in the tiny town. The food is amazing and with the huge portions, it feels like a steal for the price they ask for. Everyone that works here is very friendly and the community loves them and it shows with the quality of the food of how much they love the community. Delicious Mexican food. I got the chicken fajitas and they were so well seasoned, best I've had at a restaurant. The rice was also well seasoned and delicious. The fajitas were a bit different than the typical American-Mexican restaurant type, and in a good way. My significant other ordered the beef chimichanga and also said it was delicious. Found myself in Covington for business this week. Very out of the way for me . Seemed to be small town and the hotel recommended this place. We love Mexican food. The place is older and worn but it's clean and was nearly a full house on Wednesday night. Three for dinner. I ordered fajitas and can't recall name. Chicken , beef and a Mexican sausage. It came to table extremely hot and all kinds of sizzle with pepper and onion. Huge pike mixed enough for two easy with a plate of beans , rice and veggie including mound of guacamole and sour cream. Outstanding for fajitas . 9 out of 10 for sure. Others had plates tacos and burritos. . Also chips and fresh salsa. The food was fast plenty and really great. I don't usually comment on price but three men and two ice teas with one dry pin-a colada . $44.00 for the table less tip. It would be three times this in Connecticut. Nice atmosphere and friendly accommodation of a larger party. Food options were vast and prices were what you'd expect at a run of the mill Mexican spot. They were also nice and accommodating with dietary restrictions. The salsa was a little weak and not terribly flavorful. Otherwise everything was good. We had shrimp fajitas, burritos, tacos, Chile Rellanos, and steak. Drinks are served in huge glasses which is nice. Went to this restaurant with some of my colleagues of mine as we were in town on business. We had a party of 6 of us. The place was packed and they had several staff working that night. Our party had a great time! They service was great and the food came out extremely fast for the size of our party. I appreciate when the service is superb and refills are being taken care of promptly without asking or flagging down the server. San Juan is literally my favorite place. I eat there 2-3 times a week or more if I can, I know the servers are more than tired of seeing me, but I simply can't get enough. The chips and salsa are great. Queso is very thin and just OK. My main dish, el presidente (3 kinds of enchiladas, rice and beans) was amazing. The service, while kind, was painfully slow with everything but drinks. We were there over 20 minutes and through 2 baskets of chips before our order was taken. Everyone liked what they had : chicken and cheese quesadilla, burrito California with pork and one with steak and a burrito mexicano which was smothered in a melted cheese sauce if that's your thing. San Juan is quite the spectacle. This was the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten at. Taco Bell would have been much better. That's saying something... The salsa tasted like Tostino's pizza sauce and the food we ordered (pollo feliz and chori pollo) tasted like a reheated Hungry Man TV dinner. From now on when we pass through Covington, we'll have to starve or go to the Wendy's. I think the people who gave this place 4 and 5 star ratings were stoned or drunk. Wow. You know you've made a poor decision when you regret not going to Burger King instead. Stopped on the highway, hoping for a decent and quick meal. Prices are cheap, $6.95 for a taco, 2 enchiladas, and rice. Guacamole was runny (how the... Never mind, don't want to know). The rice was likely microwaved. Taco came topped with lettuce and cheese only (no pico, no tomatoes, onions, cilantro, taco sauce... Nada). The taco beef was mush and lacked flavor. The chicken was ok, but basically the rice, beef, and chicken all tasted like they were seasoned the same way... With a lot of salt, a little paprika, and not much else. Overall, very bland, nothing fresh tasting at all. I still just can't get over that Guac. Serious disappointment. read more

We were traveling from VA to Ohio. We wanted to eat something as we had been on the road for a while. I pulled up Yelp and found this place was right off of the road we had been traveling on. My husband and I thought both of our meal were absolutely delicious. We had so much food between out 2 combo orders that we could have just ordered 2 meal and split it! 5 starts because this is a phenomenal place for a town like covington. 5 stars even if it was another cheap/affordable mexican spot even in a big city. The menu is large! all the entrees are well prepared ( I have tried them all: covington is a small place) and the fajitas are good. (or maybe I just like grilled meat) The portions (size) by themselves are drool inducing - it's the perfect size. Oh! dont get me wrong.. they are big! But for some reason I have always managed to devour it all, and have never complained about the amount of food. Tip : Lay off the chips and salsa. Outstanding Mexican food in Covington, Virginia? Oh, hell yes! My mom and I were in town for Christmas and I really wanted to try this place. I heard it was authentic and actually run by Mexicans so I needed to try it out since I'm from Northern VA and know good Mexican and Hispanic food. We arrived in the early evening and the place was warm and inviting. There were many tables full of people and from the smells in the place I knew this could be good. I ordered a Dos Eqis Especial, my favorite Mexican beer, and my mom ordered basically an Irish coffee. Our server was a super nice and cute Mexican-American girl named Christina with a southern accent. The chips that came to the table were fresh and warm and the salsa was very good and came in a tiny carafe. When we looked at the menu a "dinner for two" caught our eye so we ordered it. We also ordered guacamole. It was $2.75! I've had better but it was fresh. The price shocked me and the best part it came in a small bowl with NO lettuce underneath like places like to fool you with. A little while later out FEAST came out. This thing was unbelievable, it was a burrito, a chalupa, 2 crunchy beef tacos with homemade shells, a chile relleno, a chicken enchilada, a chicken tamale, rice and beans. The most amazing part; this meal for two was $12.75! Are you kidding me?! I could go on and on about how that meal at home would be 25 bucks at least. Everything was awesome and authentic and homemade. I was thrilled and stuffed. We got flan for dessert and it was your typical flan. The bill was $26 and some change. I was in town with a friend from northern Virginia and we were staying in the town of Covington. Due to having a large trailer on the back of our vehicle, we didn't want to drive in order to eat. Luckily though, we had our mountain bikes with us. Finding out nothing in the sleepy downtown was open, we set our sights further out and began pedaling the three miles to San Juan. We were both pleasantly surprised when we arrived and ate (and drank), to find such a fantastic Mexican place in that quiet little town. Everything was delicious and the best kind of Tex-Mex someone could ask for. Now they just need a location in Northern Virginia. read more
