Great roadside BBQ joint. Pulled pork was excellent. Chicken was a bit dried out. Large portions and great prices.

Our server, Ginger, was helpful and kind answering any of my questions. Food came out hot, fast and was absolutely delicious. All was excellent, but the wings were certainly the star of the show - thank goodness I had the good sense to get a small order and share them with my buddy!

I ate half of it and half of the delicious potato salad. It also came with hush puppies, which were just ok - a little doughy for me. My husband got vinegar based pulled pork and baked beans and he thought they worked well together. I prefer the KC bbq sauce to the other options, the tomato bbq sauce tasted more like a sweet weak salsa to me and I personally don't care for vinegar. I think I'd probably order the same thing again next time, though I was a little curious about the burgers (which come either as double 2oz smash burgers or a 5 oz regular burger for a small upcharge.) They also have lots of desserts that sound good but we didn't try any this trip. They have Cheerwine!

I'm usually not a big Carolina style barbecue fan but it wasn't too vinegary and the sauce didn't bother me (I also usually prefer dry rub because of the heaviness of the sauce). The green beans were fantastic--great flavor, the mac and cheese pretty good too, on the runny side but the pasta firmness was perfect and not too mushy like this type of mac can get. Pork was cooked well -- I got the very ends but I liked it because it's more tender and juicy. Would come back if in the area.

Save room for banana pudding for dessert. Having grown up in Lexington, NC and lived in Texas my barbecue IQ is above average. The ribs were tender and juicy. I would have preferred to have them served dry rubbed rather than served with sauce on them. The pulled pork was good and the sandwich came with a large portion. Unfortunately the brisket was rather dry, yet covered in sauce. It was later in the day when we visited but it seemed as if the brisket had been cut into portions prior to the order. Overall I think they do a great job with Unbridled Souls and serve the community in a great way. The menu is perhaps too extensive with pulled pork, brisket, ribs, chicken, sausage, various versions of hot dogs and burgers, plus special items such as cheesesteaks, etc. Give them a stop is you are headed through Craigsville!

The space itself gives you a family bar feeling. Looks like it would be a great locals spot. They had enough tables for any size groups and it was very clean. For appetizers we had the fried pickles and pork rinds. I'd give the fried pickles a 2/5, they had flavor but lacked crunch. The breading was missing on 80% of the pickle. The pork rinds, FRIEND, those were probably the highlight of my meal. The sizzle and pop, the crunch, flavor...I'm drooling just thinking about them again. I don't think I can ever have them from a bag again. 5/5 Main Coarse we ordered the mac-n-skilled with pulled pork, the kids chicken taco with tots, brisket stuff shells, and brisket Philly cheesesteak with a side of hush puppies. Mac-n-skillet, the meat was a tad bit dry but had a good amount of cheese. Creamy. Only downside was the pork. 3.5/5. The Brisket Philly was cheesy, meat was good, great flavor just a bit too greasy. Hush puppies were good, nothing stood out in particular. 4/5. The kids chicken taco and tots were ok. Not enough cheese and the tortilla was hard, tots were just right. 3.5/5. The brisket stuffed shells were unique, loved the flavor just a bit too much cheese to meat ratio for me personally. The brisket was cooked perfectly. Would order again. 5/5 We were in and out in less than an hour. We were never rushed and the atmosphere was warm. The prices are reasonable as well.

I appreciated the selection of local beers on draft too. Found prices to be very reasonable these days. Next, the sides are out of this world. The green beans and collard greens really compete with the best Grammy homemade ones. Mac and cheese, hush puppies, and chicken tenders were on point. I thought the portion sizes were good for $3 sides. I had the ahí tacos and a side of brisket. lol. I wanted to try the brisket! The tacos has a nice flavor with an excellent sauce but the tuna was unseasoned. The biggest issue is the taco sat in juices from the toppings and became soggy quickly. A little easier on the toppings and it would be a really good dish. The brisket. Man if you hype up your bbq it better be on point. It was not. Crazy crazy dry and not really tender either. I got the flavor they intended with the oak smoke but that was really poorly cooked brisket. If you can find a good main dish everything else is lined up for a great meal. Maybe make a meal of the sides? :)

G.--this place exceeded every expectation. The brisket was unbelievably tender and practically melted in my mouth. All four barbecue sauces were delicious, but the Kansas City sauce was my absolute favorite. The mac and cheese and potato salad tasted like the kind of homemade sides you'd find at a Texas backyard barbecue. They were the perfect complement to the meal. And don't even get me started on the pecan pie--it is an absolute must-try! It was rich, sweet, and the perfect way to end the meal. I joked that I was going to slip into a sugar coma after finishing it, but it was worth every bite. If you're looking for authentic, mouthwatering BBQ with incredible sides and desserts, do yourself a favor and stop here. You won't regret it!

They have combos and family packs and single items and that whole place smelled terrific! I had just been hiking. I was starving! It's a fair bit away from the Interstate, but I can tell you that it's worth the trek. When we got here for lunch, there was a line out the door and the smokers out back hard at work told us this was the place to be. We got served pretty quickly and found a table. The place is neat and clean with a decent amount of seating both inside and out. The missus had a brisket sandwich and I got the pulled pork with slaw, pinto beans and mac&cheese for the sides. The servings are HUGE and that smoke ring isn't just for looks. The meat was done perfectly with the smoky flavor and not dried out. I also tried one of their homemade sausages. Absolutely fantastic! Snappy casing with a filling that included creamy cheese hunks and a level of spicy that was just right. We pride ourselves in having high standards when it comes to BBQ, and this joint didn't disappoint! We've been to numerous BBQ joints including the famous award-winning Big Bob Gibsons in Northern Alabama and this place comes in well over that. We visited with the owner (Kelly) and had a great experience. The staff we interfaced with were both friendly and engaging. I would give this place 6 stars if I could. Highly recommended!

Here's the elite version: One look at Mama Jean's handwritten chalkboard menu told me this was a place that lets the food do the talking--and the fried ribs backed it up. The fried-rib special was the undeniable star. Topped with Buffalo sauce, hot honey, Gorgonzola cream sauce, Gorgonzola crumbles and green onion, these ribs were an absolute revelation. They were fried hard--the right way--giving the outside a satisfying bite while the meat remained tender inside. Sweet, spicy, tangy, creamy and savory, it was a bold combination that somehow worked beautifully from every angle. The pulled-pork sandwich refused to be overshadowed. The pork was moist, tender, well-seasoned and piled ridiculously high on a soft bun. This was a serious portion of properly cooked pork--not a sandwich relying on sauce to carry it. Then came the collard greens, which unexpectedly became the star of the sides. I expected them to play backup, but they had enough presence to stand beside the barbecue. The mac and cheese was good, but those collards were the side I kept returning to. Mama Jean's is not a barbecue spot you want to miss if you're anywhere near Roanoke. The setting is casual, the portions are generous and the flavors are unapologetically big. If the fried ribs are written on that chalkboard, don't overthink it--order them before they're gone. Top-notch barbecue
