Charming view of the city from the outside patio
Alison M.

I really enjoyed this little gem right in the heart of mainstream downtown historic Staunton! It's much larger inside than it looks with a mural of the city on the back wall by the stairs that lead up to the bathrooms and a few more tables with seating. There are some patio chairs outside on the sidewalk for people watching and there are a good number of tables inside. We were greeted warmly and ordered the hummus plate and quiche platter with a side salad and fruit. The quiche was good but was a bit over cheesy for my taste - purely preference - and the side salad and fresh fruit hit the spot! I really enjoyed sitting outside people watching and snacking. Open every day but Sunday from 8-4pm. It's worth a stop! They had some cute local art for sale in the window as well.

Cute country sandwich cafe!

Great spot for lunch in downtown Staunton. We had the Chicken Bacon Panini and the Reuben- they were both delicious!

Byers Street Bistro - Barbecue chicken nachos were fantastic!

I had The Godfather 10" gourmet pizza. This pie had a tasty tomato sauce base on a worthy crust, topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, grilled chicken, mushrooms, and tomato pieces. I was pleasantly surprised how the chicken became a part of the toppings flavor profile. I enjoyed the balance of supportive crust, tomatoes and mozzarella with a satisfying meat combination in the cheese. I like the warm atmosphere, friendly staff and good food.

We went into the old town on a Sunday night after checking into our motel & found more than a few restaurants open for supper. Our first choice, The Mill Street Grill, actually had a long line of folks waiting for a table to open up, so being hungry & tired, we moved on & settled around the corner in on the Byers Street Bistro for what we thought would be a quick bite. This is a friendly place with a tavern atmosphere & a few TV's running sports. Spied a NY Strip on the menu under 40 bucks & when I learned it was grill-fired, I jumped. Partner had a salad paired with a side of spiced grilled shrimp that complemented the salad nicely. Splurged for cocktails & found them to be made correctly. That evening the restaurant was moderately busy with diners & a few solos at the bar. Still, it seemed to take forever to get our drinks. Our starter of fried green tomatoes actually came out first. It was mated with a generous scoop of pimento cheese that was very tasty if not exactly original ( heavy on the cream cheese ). When entrees came out, I needed to deploy more patience as the steak knife provided to slice the steak had seen better days. In spite of the delay in getting food to mouth, I found the steak to be a good cut of meat & a generous portion. And it was almost cooked properly, to medium rare. Our server was great. Mgmt does check in on tables to make sure diners are happy campers. All & all, I'd go back as it has a nice menu & a good vibe but If patience is not your thing, you may consider looking elsewhere.

But a customer inside kindly came out and said they were leaving, offering us their inside table. (There's also the beer garden outside in the back for seating, which looks like it would be nice and comfortable.) I got an everything bagel with hummus and tomato. My partner got everything bagel, scallion cream cheese, tomato ($0.85 for tomato) and lox ($6 for the lox). Although everything tasted good, we both noticed that the bagels were really, really dense, tough and chewy. Like uncomfortably tough and chewy. My partner left one half of their bagel uneaten and I didn't finish mine. It looked great and the hummus and cream cheese and other toppings were fine, but the bagel was really, really tough. I'd like to believe that it isn't because the bagels were stale, but the thought crossed my mind. The coffee I had (dark brew) was outstanding, served in a nice, large mug. Excellent! Service was efficient. I considered a four-star review because the coffee was outstanding, but the bagels were really disappointing. It's too bad. It looks like a cool place, but their main food item appears to be bagels. Maybe it was a one-off, but I spent over $26 for two bagels and one coffee, and I don't plan to come back to find out.
