We stopped into Don Tequila's for lunch on Monday, December 8, 2025, and had a great experience. We were greeted quickly, and shortly after being seated, we were brought salsa and chips--which were excellent. The chips were clearly fresh out of the fryer, perfectly crisp, and paired with a flavorful salsa that had a nice hint of heat. We both ordered the Speedy Gonzales, featuring a cheese enchilada, beef taco, and refried beans. As expected, everything was consistently good and exactly what we've come to enjoy from that dish. This is a nice local Mexican restaurant that my parents enjoy going to several times a week. It's spacious and colorful inside. They weren't exactly following all the COVID spacing protocols when we ate there last weekend but then again, I'm not entirely sure what they are at this point in Virginia anyway. The chips and salsa with white sauce were really good - they had a very good plain tomato salsa that had some spice to it and was good. Service was pretty good, the server knew my parents and was prompt enough though she did disappear for about 15 minutes before taking our order, but after that she was OK. Both of us came to Lexington from more metropolitan areas. My partner was born and raised in Phoenix, where I lived for many years as well. It doesn't get much more authentic outside of Mexico than Phoenix. Having said that, though, there are so many average or worse Mexican restaurants in the US. Places where they plop some canned refried beans and bland rice on a plate, next to whatever you ordered so covered in some sauce that you can't tell what it is. Don Telquilas is better. While still being reasonably priced, you get large helpings that are well seasoned and flavorful. One of our favorites is the Chorizo-Pollo, spicy and cheesy. My go to is the carnitas, which are better earlier in the day (they overcook as the day progresses), juicy chunks of pork served with saiteed onions, very good. You are greeted fairly promptly and seated (if there isn't a wait), and then bottomless chips are brought with a red sauce as well as Virginia's white sauce. You might mistake that for ranch if you didn't know better, but it's a little tangy with a spice to it, and I like to mix it with the red for a tasty bite. While you wait (food comes out pretty fast!), you can enjoy the hand painted wall decor and the authentic, made in Mexico painted seating. There is always Mexican music, sometimes a tv, and a separate bar area. The bathrooms are clean and bright as well. I steer clear of the quesadillas, having ordered a chicken one that only had chicken but no cheese, which was odd. But the fajitas are great, as are a variety of the enchiladas, shrimp and fish dishes and more . I've always left full, taken home leftovers, and never been ill from their food. The ice tea is crisp and cold, fresh and never stale. They have a decent selection of beer, including a few Mexican ones. Service has always been friendly. If you're in town, try it out! read more

Love, love, love the decor of this place! I am a sucker for hand painted and hand carved wood...so this place has all sorts of that going on! Friendly staff, clean eatery, quick service, and large portions. Lots of things going right for this place that any customer could walk away from being entirely pleased with for sure! The food was great! The menu options were plentiful! The system was down, so it was cash or check only...so the only down side was our waiter didn't tell us this until the check came...it would have been helpful to have been told this from the get go. At the end of our meal party of three were frantically searching for cold hard cash (sometimes its just not on hand due to my overuse of my handy card). Luckily though we had the cash and enough to tip, but that would have been something helpful to know prior to ordering. Our whole party was pleased though, and felt we had made a good choice in coming here. It wasn't exactly a four star, but definitely not a 3 star either. Great location, but keep in mind it's set off from the main road, so drive in the parking lot behind the fast food eateries facing the main road! Not impressive. Atmosphere is great, and staff is friendly. Chips and salsa to start. The salsa tasted as if someone accidentally knocked a bottle of chili powder into it. It really overpowered the salsa. I had burrito texano. All the meats were way overcooked. It's not a good meal with crunchy steak. Very light on the cheese sauce, tortilla was hard. Awful; maybe that's what the folks around here like; burrito full of stringy beef and chicken grilled no beans or rice in sight hardly any sauce which was tasteless; salsa the same sauce as the burrito; the tacos: some mystery beef, more stringy chicken; couldn't force myself to eat ; sorry but the chain Chipotle 100 times tastier and actually cheaper. While traveling through we stopped at the Hampton there on the hill. This was just a short walk and had outside seating, so a perfect fit on a warm evening. Restaurant was fairly busy but we were seated right away. Food was hot and fresh and quite tasty. Chips were served with salsa and ranch dressing (which was odd). We're not from around here, but we've been here twice, once in 2019 and once last week. In early 2019, we chose this place on an off chance because we were hungry after a long drive and there was barely any places open since it was late...but ever since that night, we've been craving this restaurant. We had forgotten the name of the restaurant let alone the name of the town it's in since we were quite tired that night and we didn't really spend time in this town, but we finally figured it out last week! Huzzah! We got the rib eye both times and boy, do we love it! Super tasty and we like the way it's cooked. The beans that come with it remind me of my mom's beans, I love them. (: My partner gets the rice since he's not a bean fan and he says it's good, too. We also really enjoyed the chips & salsa; we just added a bit more salt to it. The white sauce was new to us there this second time around, but what a nice addition! Yummy! If you are looking for authentic, hand-spun corn tortillas mashed in a clay bowl and fire roasted then go to Mexico. If you are looking for the best Mexican in Lexington, go to Don T's. Is it the best Tex Mex you will ever eat? Definitely not. But, for the prices you pay (cheap, especially at lunch) and the quantity you get (take home boxes are a staple) you can't really argue. Things to try: Texas margaritas (great for pregames!), hard tacos with extra cheese, special hot salsa for the chips (ask for it), paying individually on a group check (the cashier knows all). Parking is ample, the environment is colorful and festive, and the wait staff is prompt and attentive (most times). The only drawback is that you will listen to the same looped music every single time you go. For those Margaritas, I can live with that. read more

First, know that I've lived in Houston for 21 years and have some pretty high standards when it comes to both Tex Mex and Mexican food. But coming from that perspective, this food is not good. Flavor is lacking, and everything tends to taste bland and generic with a variety of their dishes. One time I ordered a bowl of queso and promptly received a flour tortilla covered in cheese. That was pretty confusing... The nachos are 90% peppers, so steer away from those, and the salsa leaves a lot to be desired. I always get the feeling they went across the street to buy their ingredients from Kroger. I will give them this though, their Margaritas are pretty decent and affordable on Wednesdays. Their draft beers are quite cheap too. Unlimited Nachos with salsa and white sauce!!!! Gets an extra star just for that :) We burned through couple cycles of that stuff before they gave up and just served us our entree. Talking of which, was good. Tasty, fresh, and very satisfying. Don Tequila's is a Mexican restaurant located in the "old" McDonald's location on Nelson for those who have been in the area before. The food is standard Mexican fare from taco combo plates up to the obligatory Guadalajara and restaurant "Especiale" dishes. There is nothing exceptional about the food, but it is good. Don't expect authentic Southwest as some reviewers have (come on folks, it's Lexington VA, not Juarez, Mex.) Service was quick, staff was polite. You get plenty of food and you are greeted at your table with the standard chips and salsa, but there is also a white cream-based sauce that is served as well that the manager on duty at the time just called "white sauce". So much for the secret ingredients. You will either love it or hate it, kind of sweet and not really all that good in my opinion, but try it - you might like it. Lots of options at the bar, so expect to have a Corona or Dos Equis if you are so inclined. Margaritas are good, but I doubt you will rave about them. If you are in the area and have a craving for Mexican, you aren't going to do much better without a significant drive. Food is good and you get plenty for the money. Expect to have a smattering of locals as well as college students as your fellow clientele. I realize this doesn't sound like a rave review, but I will probably stop by again next time I'm in the area. Inhabiting a former McDonalds location, Don Tequila's offers standard Mexican fare, and also features margaritas and beer. The menu takes on the typical Midwestern style of listing 40 combos that mix various Mexican staples like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, gorditas, etc. The food is mediocre and won't impress anyone with taste, but it is certainly edible. The queso is good, but not much different that what you'd get from Tostitos at the grocery store. The chips and salsa are ordinary and most likely store bought. The margaritas are good and strong, and affordably priced. In a city starved for restaurants that double as places to get loaded, Don Tequila's fills a vital need for Lexington. It's unfortunate the minds behind the food and menu haven't improved since the opening. read more

A New Mexican place in town always will get my attention. We've been there twice now and will probably go for the trifecta. Good chips and salsa are always a good start-and they're solid but not particularly outstanding here. My wife had a chimi with quest-which was a white cheese variation but no spices to be seen or tasted. I had cheese enchiladas one trip and some pork tacos my second trip. Both were pretty good. The owners seem to have put some money into developing the concept and the brand-I think Don Tequilas is worth visiting read more
