Brews were great, pizza tasted good, but it was cold, at least the toppings were, and kind of soggy in the middle. I had to go find napkins and ask for red pepper flakes. The decor was cool, ancient doors covered with tempered glass for tables. The bathrooms were clean. Service was okay, but it was kind of a step up to order place, and I guess napkins and such were help yourself. They had lots of board games, and several people were enjoying them. read more

Beer snobs rejoice! Heliotrope is a true craft brewery serving clean and complex beers. My hubby and I enjoy trying all sorts of breweries but, it is always a treat to find a place like this. They have a small variety of styles and some of our favorites are their hazy IPA, salted marzen and plum conditioned sour. The service is friendly and helpful as well. As if all this wasn't enough, wood fired pizzas are also available! And their dough is delicious with that little pillowy stretch to it. It makes for a mouthwatering pairing. read more

Have you ever cut your own pizza with scissors? Well, you can at Heliotrope Brewery. The pizza -- which has a sourdough crust and is wood-fired -- is delicious. It's so delicious that it almost made me forget that Heliotrope was making me cut my own pizza with scissors. I visited for lunch with a few people, and we ordered a number of things. The pizzas we ordered for the table were the Margherita, Funghi, a pizza without cheese, and a special pizza with pesto. They were all amazing, but I loved the pizza with pesto the most. I wish I could remember what it was called, but I think it was particular to that day. In any case, all of the pizzas came out with a chewy yet crunchy crust, with a few charred bits here and there. I love a good wood-fired pizza. We also ordered the Turntable, which is a huge appetizer for the table. It includes labneh, hummus, fresh vegetables (celery, carrots, peppers), a Greek olive mix, a salad and flatbread. It was so satisfying and fresh. Heliotrope is a brewery, so of course I had to taste their beers. The beer is made from local Virginia/North Carolina ingredients, and they include some interesting flavors, like amarillo and maple syrup. I ordered a flight (four 5-ounce pours) of some of their more popular beers, and I don't remember their name, but they were really good. The brewery / restaurant is bright and airy. The ceilings are tall and sound carries easily, so I found myself shouting at the people at my table, because it got really loud with everyone talking and the sounds mixing. read more

Do not come here at all. If you do visit, do not come here hungry. In fact, don't come here within 90 minutes of when you *might* become hungry. The wait is very long for your food and the trouble is, you pay up front so they already have your money! I will not be returning under any circumstances. They cited the lunch rush as a reason for delay, which made it seem like perhaps their restaurant seats too many people for the capacity their kitchen can produce. There were many tables available and still - 90 minutes wait for the food. Ridiculous. Additionally, the service was reminiscent of the sloths at the DMV in Zootopia. No sense of urgency whatsoever. I wondered if they lost our order, couldn't find our table, ate our order.... something! It just didn't make sense. Then you won't be able to leave if you've opened a tab. Food good not amazing Service was terrible. You order at the bar and then sit down and they deliver your food. The bartender essentially ignored us, skipping to the gentleman behind us to take his order while we were standing right in front of him! Our food took a ridiculous amount of time to come out and came out asymmetrically ( mine came out 30 mins before my husband's)- and the server made no comment about the delay. Spoiler alert...food is great and the beer is fantastic. This is more of a story of an establishment doing what it can to make the costumer happy... Had a really great/bad experience recently. We have enjoyed some yummy meals and drinks there over the past couple years as we drive to and from Atlanta to Skaneateles. This year, Dec 2024, we had a less than awesome take out experience, for the pizza was insanely soggy and not cut. Side note, I did not know they didn't cut the pizza for take a ways . I made a call about the soggy uncut pizza and Scott, the manager, explained their way of doing pizza, was very receptive, apologized and offered a new pie or beer. But seeing we were headed out early, we declined the offer at the time. We just returned a couple weeks later, Jan 2025, and Scott was good to his word, he comped me my beer while I waited. The pies we had were spot on! The beers were fantastic and the crowlers I will bring home will be enjoyed by a few friends and myself. So, like I said, this was a story of how a place can try and make a less than great experience into a positive one. Please, Lexington, visit this gem of a brewery and pizza joint! It deserves your love! And a side note to the owners. Let them at least ask to cut the pizza for the to go orders. I know you want people to have the dine in experience of cutting the pie, but those of us who are traveling, don't normally travel with our pizza scissors. read more

We went here with no expectations and were happy to have some tasty bears and truly fantastic food. The watermelon salad looked and tasted like a dish out of a fine dining establishment and the pizza was as delicious as it looked. This will be a new stop when passing through Lexington. read more

I enjoyed the beers - Chess Club Fist Fight and Arcadian Rhythm were standouts. Also love that they had a Brown Ale (Bob Paisley) on tap, which is uncommon. Got a flight and also tried some of the Castle Hill Cider. Service was fast and friendly, and the place had a cool vibe on the inside. Food was more of a mixed bag. We had a Portobello pizza, which was a little lacking in substance for the price. Also two Carnivore Paninis that were a little greasy and light on the mozzarella cheese. While everything was cooked well, few of the flavors really stood out. read more

This was my second time visiting and we always get the gluten free pizza. This is the best gluten free crust I've ever had, hands down. What we ordered hummus plate with pita and add on veggies always sunny - oil based, shaved sirloin, sautéed pepper and onions, garlic provolone, and cheese wiz carnivore - red sauce, capicola, salami cotta, Italian sausage, bacon, mozzarella, finished with rosemary chimichurri To add on to the experience, you get pizza scissors to cut your own pie! read more

My sister and I were on a hiking weekend in the area, and we hit this place up for lunch after a lengthy morning hike. Good beer, great service, and incredible food. The bartender made recommendations for beers to try based on our preferences, and she was spot-on. She also helped us decide on food options that would be filling without being too heavy. Everything was super fresh. The veggie and hummus platter was such a surprise just how good it was. The pizza comes with a pair of scissors to cut slices, which was comical but was really nice to cut exactly as much as we wanted. The pizza was great, but it was the dough (which was the same as the Flatbread that came with the dip platter) that was our favorite part of the meal. We both kept going back for more dip with the bread, even after we were full, because it was just that good! read more

This has become my favorite lunch stop on my travels past I81 and I64. Mainly bc I love love love great beer. I have lauded the quality of IPAs and stouts on Untappd. See Untappd for some of the crisp, dry terrific IPAs they make. The barrel aged stouts are beautiful. But let's go food, the brick oven pizzas are scrumptious, unusual and with fresh ingredients. The carnivore for example has Italian meats, dried cured delicious. The salads are not to be missed, there are often only two but everyone I've had was spectacular. One was a fresh seasonal peach salad. Another a caprese...wow. So good. It's a gorgeous historic town with two historic universities, but I'll say this too. The clear display of inclusion (see picture) in the window made a wonderful impact on me personally as an ally. Well done. I'll return again and again. read more

This place was great! The food was really yummy, and so were the drinks! The place was full when we walked in, but as people got us the staff was very quick to clean off a table and help you find a seat. The wait was a little long for the food, but we sipped our drinks while we waited and it was totally fine! read more

The food is pretty good, but it consistently takes at least an hour. I have been to Heliotrope three times. Each time, I ordered two pizzas and nothing else. I paid and tipped at the counter. The first time, my pizza was room temperature. The most recent time, it took ninety minutes with no warning. The food does not warrant the wait (unless you are drinking). I will be coming back in the future on a weeknight and will hopefully have better things to say. read more

We stopped in for a beer as I found this spot on yelp. It is on the upper end of main street in Lexington. Parking could be a little tight if the street parking is full, but there are a few public parking locations in the downtown area... so it would just be a short walk. We thought this was a new spot, but it has been open since 2019. There is a fair amount of indoor seating, some seating in a dark alley and a few spots in front by the sidewalk. They also make and serve pizza at this location. We did not try the pizza, but that will probably be in the next trip. We did however get a flight of beers. Three of the 4 were quite good. We enjoyed the mexican lager the best. This place did a fair amount of take out just for the pizza so that is probably a good sign that it is pretty good! Definitely worth a second trip. read more

As someone from New York where pizza is king, this was hands down one of the best wood fired pizzas I've ever had. Between the sweet and tangy of the goat cheese that just melted in your mouth I would come back over and over again. Service is a little peculiar just due to ordering at a bar like area then sitting but still was nice, I felt it was private enough for me to eat my dinner in peace. The beer was great I had their house sour and it was extremely pleasant. 10/10! read more

We recently visited Heliotrope on our drive back to NY. A friend went to Washington and Lee and said it was a good place to stop on our trip. He was certainly right! Heliotrope is a very cool microbrewery right in the middle of Lexington. They are known for their sourdough pizza. We had the prosciutto and the pho. Both were delicious and I love the sourdough element to the pizza. Their rye sour beer was also fantastic. I also loved the table which was a reclaimed door! The staff was super friendly and gave us some good recommendations on where to get a coffee on the ride home. If we are ever in the area we will definitely be coming back! read more

What a lovely little brewery in downtown Lexington! I originally planned to stop here back in March as I was passing through town -- but it was right as the world shut down plus I sprained my ankle (one being a tad worse than the other) -- so I wasn't able to make it in. Yesterday, I was visiting Staunton for the day from Richmond and swung down to Lexington as well, mostly for a Heliotrope redo. It was easy to find parking in front on Main Street. I walked in with my mom and stepped up to the bar. We were given a paper menu to review. She had some questions and was confused by the menu format, and the server seemed a tad annoyed by that. He was much nicer though when I went up by myself later to order my last beer and close the tab. I ordered three 7-ounce pours during my time there: Oralia (so good!), Wiffle Ball Umpire (refreshing), and Felsbruche (quite nice). In a perfect non-Covid world, I would've loved the ability to have tried smaller pours or tastes of other beers. Re-re-do, once this dang virus goes away someday? My mom had a cider out of Natural Bridge that was sweet. For pizzas, I had the Za'atar and my mom selected the more classic Margherita. Mine was delicious, and I appreciate them confirming no red pepper in the spice blend too. They provide table-side scissors to cut the pizza yourself on receipt, as they said the pizza begins to dry out as soon as it's cut. In the age of Covid, if you sit indoors, you retrieve extra rounds from the bar. Outdoors is table service. Obviously wear a mask as you move around the brewery. I saw lots of sanitizer in use here also, and they're very clearly conscious about maintaining the brewery as a safe space. Even the bathroom was spotless. The brewery itself is beautiful, with well done decor and an airy vibe. It's the type of place I'd spend hours in with friends if I lived in the city and if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic. A gem, for more reasons than are immediately apparent. Heliotrope presents as a hip, stylish college microbrewery. But scratch the surface and it's a regular university of fermentation: beers, of course, very good ones; and cider, but also kvass (heirloom tomatoes and sourdough rye flatbread), pickled vegetables (delicious), and sourdough pizza. Everything is great, and none of it is overly fat, or at all fake. The atmosphere is college town chaos, polyglot, and chill. The service is friendly and competent. Great brewery with an awesome pizza oven. Their beers were fantastic and we loved the names. The staff is amazingly friendly and will lead you to a beer that will meet your palate. My wife isn't a dark beer drinker but enjoyed their stout. I had their IPAs and found them completely different with an amazing taste. Too bad we didn't try the pizza as they have adjusted their hours and we had lunch a restaurant a couple blocks away before trying the beers. As a side note this place sanitized every door handle, table and seat while we were there. If a customer came in and left there was someone wiping down the door. Plus the social distancing is in max effect and all the patrons respected everyone. Great brewery, maybe on my next trip I'll get the pizza when everything gets back to normal. read more

Their sourdough pizza is amazing! I normally don't eat the pizza edge crust where there's nothing but dough, but man, I was surprised at how good the dough tastes. I ordered the cacio e pepe pizza, which is basically just a cheese pizza. They combined those simple ingredients like cream, cheese, pepper, spices into such a flavorful pizza. My only complain is, as you could see in the picture, the center of the pizza is burnt (in black...). But still, I would come again and give another shot read more
