Screen security door

John is very reliable and professional man. First- he came to measure and gave us few very helpful recommendations for screen security doors. When door was ready- he promptly picked it up from Home Depot and installed in less then two hours. Some hardware parts were missing from the special order from Home Depot and he even used his own spare ones and promised to follow up when the rest will arrive. Very happy that we choose John for our screen security door installation. Fee is very reasonable, easy to communicate and most important- quality of the final product. Highly recommend John from San Diego Security Doors!

New security door/frame

John came over to look at our existing security door to give suggestions- our door was missing the top frame and there were gaps in the side, top, bland bottom of the door that let in flying and crawling insects (unwanted in my house). John said that there were other security doors/frames that should take care of our issue. He made another appointment the same week to pick up the new door/frame, install it and haul away the old door. It only took him 1 1/2 hours for the install job. Jon was nice and professional l would recommend this business. We are very satisfied with the work and price.

Email exchange with business owner after we asked him to come back and fix the code violation in his work on our house. Read from bottom up

This is a one-person business; the owner's name is John Hainsey. If you hire him without reading this, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you're one of the cases that goes smoothly. The quick version of this review is: 1. He pulled a misled us about what he would charge and ended up charging us much more than he led us to expect. 2. He's very unreliable; repeatedly failed to show up for appointments without any notice. 3. He did shoddy work--door doesn't bolt smoothly and, more important, he used unfinished and untreated wood to build a frame for our door (which we confirmed with the state is a code violation). 4. He started out very friendly and pleasant but, when our landlord noticed the code violation, he was evasive and eventually his attitude turned very ugly and mean. (See the screenshot of my email exchange with him for a taste of who you're dealing with here.) The longer version: He's got a pretty high star rating right now; don't be fooled. He's a personable guy--charming even--and I don't doubt that he often comes through and does a satisfactory job on the first try. But he's also very unreliable, quite unprofessional, and his friendly attitude turns very ugly if you need any kind of follow-up service him. (Note the parallel with the other 1-star review on this site: started out well, problem with initial job, couldn't get him to come back and he became very rude and standoffish.) My guess is the positive reviews are people who had jobs that turned out to be simple and who either didn't know enough to look closely at the quality of his work or had jobs that were hard to screw up. We hired him to install a security door at our home. He was very pleasant at first and offered a very competitive price: $259. After coming to check out the door, he affirmed the $259 quote but said he'd need to build out the door frame a little and, depending on the details, that might add to the price a bit. He gave us what he called a "worst case scenario" quote of $345. He told use we'd need to paint the wood he used to build out the frame, which was no problem. The problems started with he didn't show up for the appointment to come do the install. No call, no text; he just didn't come. When she texted him to ask where he was, he apologized and said he'd gotten busier than expected. That was annoying because my fiancée had scheduled her day around the appointment. He also didn't show for the second appointment. This time I texted him the day before to confirm. He responded saying he was out of town with a vague excuse about "some family stuff." At this point, my fiancée was fed up and wanted to find someone else. But I insisted we give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, family stuff does sometimes come up! I should have listened to my fiancée. He did finally show up to the third appointment and installed the door. Then he just charged us the "worst case" price with no discussion as though there had never been any question of a lower price. I'm pretty persuaded the initial price was intentionally part of a bait-and-switch to get us to hire him. The door is square in the frame but it doesn't close very well--you have to hold it in place to get it to bolt. Worse, he used untreated, unfinished wood to build out the door. Our landlord confirmed with the state that this is a code violation; all outdoor wooden structures or attachments to siding must be pressure treated. There were still shims sticking out of the frame when I took a close look. So, we can paint it but it'll be hard to get it to look right because the wood he used is so rough and is covered in lumber yard stamps that will take multiple coats of paint to cover properly. Our landlord was unhappy with the work and reached out to him. He was evasive but finally agreed to come paint the frame himself to make up for using such cheap, unfinished wood (and yet still charging us the absolute maximum he could--his "worst case scenario" quote). Well, as we learned with John the first time we tried to get him to come out and do work for us, him agreeing to come is very different from him actually showing up and doing the work. We hounded him for awhile and were starting to discuss what we would do if we just couldn't get him to keep his word (like posting negative reviews, complaining to the better business bureau, etc.) Unfortunately, he was accidentally copied on that email exchange. When he saw it, he became furious and outright refused to come finish the work he had agreed to do. See the screenshot of our email exchange below--I think it pretty clearly shows what a slimy little scumbag cheat this guy is. Save yourself a potential nightmarish experience and don't hire this guy.

Security door installed by San Diego Security Doors

I contacted John and explained we wanted a security door installed -no problem he said -- he also offered to haul away any old door or even pick up the new door at no charge! We picked up the new door ourselves and there was no old door to haul away however, we told him we had to await the approval of our HOA for the install but as soon as that was green-lighted we would be in touch again. About three weeks later we had approval and John came over promptly on a Friday afternoon - right on time and ready to get to work -- in less than an hour we had our new security door up and running and just great. John is courteous, professional, efficient, knows his stuff real well (he even saved us some money as I had purchased a sealing kit that he said really was not needed so we returned it and saved ourselves that and the install which would have been extra labor) - we cannot recommend him enough! He installs all kinds of doors not just security doors so, for all your door needs don't hesitate to call on John at San Diego Security Doors - he's the owner and he;s your man! Thanks John for a job well done.

Security screen door and cat door purchased separately. John fabricated the door so the cat door fits firmly in the security screen door.

John at San Diego Security Doors was great to work with! Took about one week total from first call to install. John came out to measure, he picked up the security screen door plus a chubby cat door I ordered at Home Depot, he fabricated the holder in the security screen for the cat door (chubby size - one of my cats is a "larger" model...) and installed the security screen. If I had the locks on hand he would have installed them also. John had to cut the security screen, create a wooden holder and install the cat door in the holder. He did a FANTASTIC job and the whole thing is solid and secure. Everyone that has seen the door has commented on the craftsmanship of the work. John even cleaned up all debris when he was done with the install. I found John on Yelp with the help of my fellow Yelper's. I would work with John again and highly recommend him for security door installs with or without those chubby cat doors!

The entire team is considerate, polite, and genuinely pleasant to work with. When they're at our house, it feels more like having friends over than contractors; they have such positive attitudes and work beautifully together. They did an amazing job replacing our 30+ windows. Austin is great to work with as he informed us about each product and prepared us for the installation process. The installation crew, Frank, Joe, Nate, Enrique, and Chris were also fantastic. All the windows work perfectly and look beautiful. They even left some parts of the house cleaner than they were before they started. The owner is also great and very present if any needs arise, though we never had any issues at all. We couldn't be happier with the results and the experience!

After a productive consultation for an entry door, we made an on-site appointment at my home in the Temecula wine valley. I felt that I was respectfully guided towards appropriate products and that my questions were heard and answered. I made some preliminary decisions and soon received a clear and itemized quote after a Hometime contactor came out to verify measurements. I took time to weigh my choice, call Kaleb and amend the order slightly, then placed my order in February. I appreciated the "no pressure" approach, yet confident guidance. As of yesterday and before the end of March, our door has been expertly installed by Rob (Robert) who showed up on time and worked efficiently. He reviewed our order, explained the installation process and was extremely detail oriented from beginning to end. He's personable and definitely an expert in his craft! He got right to the removal of the old frame & door and was methodical in his approach to framing out the new one. Hanging a door correctly with all the new hardware and a keyless entry unit is an art and each step was done with care and expertise. We feel we have been well taken care of and appreciate that everything was handled through Hometime, not by outside contractors. There were no glitches, no excuses and no rescheduling to deal with. Superb customer service. Great work at every juncture and definitely worth the bottomline price!

The broken-down seals were causing significant heat loss/gain and allowing bugsinside. After comparing quotes from several local companies and Costco, we chose Ameristar. The deciding factor was their reasonably priced door with a built-in doggie door for our two 70 lb dogs go outside to fo their thing. Other companies either didn't offer this option or quoted more than double the price. Our sales representative, Larry, was exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly. Scheduling and installation were quick and efficient. The installation team did a beautiful job. Apologies for the dirty windows/dog door, we've had them up a few months. After 3 months, the doors are holding up great. We will definitely be using Ameristar again when it's time to replace our windows.

The temperature in the south facing bedroom on a hot 90 degree plus day would always be nine degrees hotter than the rest of the house. I decided to replace not only the four windows in the south facing bedroom, but six other windows that can be viewed in the same field of vision from the street, to keep the aesthetics consistent. The replacement windows I selected are double pane argon gas filled to help keep the heat out during the summer season. I put out a bid on Yelp and narrowed the field down to two companies, Note I did not select the least expensive bid, but actually selected the most expensive bid. My reasoning was a solid five star Yelp rating, BBB A+++ rating and the knowledge and excellent follow up provided by the salesperson, David White. Other factors in my decision were silver coating on the glass to reduce the intense green hue that most argon gas filled windows exhibit and exterior window casings that are solid without decorative ribs that would collect dirt. I was provided with a detailed explanation of the process and same day estimate. The process from start to finish took five weeks. This would have been as little as two weeks if I did not have an arch top window. Curved windows take longer to build, at least for Ameristar. It took me a while to prepare the two rooms, so I was not in a big hurry. The installation was done yesterday. The crew was on time, polite, and from my view, was extremely careful and exhibited excellent attention to detail. The 10 windows were installed in one day. The crew cleaned up their mess very well and everything went according to plan. I am completely satisfied with the entire process. The windows are very elegant looking, not so green and make the house look better. I trust that the temperature in the south facing bedroom will level out with the rest of the house with the argon gas in the windows. Five stars all the way. Well done.
