San Carlos is a wonderful hole in the wall, family owned Mexican bakery in Suitland that is absolutely worth a stop by if you are in the area! What I love the most about San Carlos is that it is clearly frequented by the local community and their selection is reflective of the population. The baked goods rival those of their uptight DC counterparts at half the price. Also, where else can you get elote (street corn) at a bakery!? If you speak Spanish, please use it here. Now for the suggestions. Of course you have to get some pan dulce (literally sweet bread), but let's not stop there. All of the options are in the left-most and center display. You're at a Mexican bakery, my friend, so there are many options depending on the day. As far as my favorite.... Nino envuelto (a jelly roll): A sweet bread with sugar typically rolled with some sort of berry jelly and topped with coconut shavings. Hand me a strawberry nino envuelto and we will be the best of friends. Not to be confused with its Dominican counterpart which uses protein fillings in place of sweets. A close second for me is the chilindrina which is a jelly or cream filling in between two layers of sweet bread. Imagine this as a hamburger and just replace the patty with sweet deliciousness. (There's a Chick Fil A right down the street if you are looking to save the cows). Polvoron is a very crumbly and soft shortbread. It can also be referred to as pan de polvo. Yes it is supposed to crumble apart. Yes you will want a napkin. Yes you will want more than one. Pan de elote (literal translation to corn bread) is more of a pudding-style cake than it is a bread. It is very dense and buttery and, no!, it does not have any corn! It is merely shaped to look like an ear of corn. Don't worry, though, you can still get your real elote (corn) to eat on the way out. They typically always have 'Conchas' which is your standard pan dulce with a crystallized sugar square design on the top to look like a seashell. Next up are the 'Cuernos' which is just a horn-shaped pan dulce with or without sugar topping. Ojos de buey are literally sweet dough balls filled with marmalade. Yum. They have different flavored puffed pastries in the right-most display depending on the day but you can never go wrong with the crema (standard cream filled) or pina (actually real, fresh pineapple!) I have not yet tried their custom made cakes but that is my next goal. Stay tuned for an updated review after that! If you're feeling especially adventurous, order some atol de elote- a sweet corn and milk drink. It is very creamy and silky; highly suggested! TLDR- Order this on your visit 1) Nino envuelto 2) Chilindrina 3) Concha (to share at home) 4) Ear of elote for the drive home (hey it's healthy!)

I visited this bakery, when I was coming for breakfast at a nearby restaurant. Sweet Tooth is…read morelocated in an industrial section of Ritchie Road, in Capitol Heights. I entered with the intention of purchasing baked goods, as snowstorm snacks, but had no idea they also have a full food menu. I ordered the strawberry shortcake, which was excellent!! It was moist and sweet and the strawberries tasted great. I also had a few cookies and some pound cake, which were all good. Service was quick and friendly and I was able to sample their bean soup which was nice and hot and seasoned well! This location as a few parking spots, that they share with other businesses, and you are able to sit down inside of the restaurant. They also bake cakes. I saw a few of their designs and they looked great. I plan to return again!

I had no idea that in addition to sweets, they also offer a full menu of food/meals. I also learned that they've been open for almost 30 years. I decided to go with a slice of vanilla cake with chocolate icing, and it was pretty dry, but the flavor was good. The customer service was wonderful, so I will go back to try one of the entrees. Parking was fine , but I can see it being a bit tight on a busy day. Inside also has a few booths if you'd like to eat there.

Good: the vegan cupcakes are probably the best around…read more Bad: their prices are high in comparison with GF bakeries basically in any major city, and they have an illegal "No Cash" policy (illegal under DC law. The owner should look up the law because she's way out of compliance: https://code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/council/laws/23-187), but charge a 3% fee if you pay by credit card, which you are required to. They basically give you no option to avoid paying a fee. (In response to the owner's response below: They have a sign that says NO CASH, so is a customer supposed to believe they'll accept cash IF the customer has exact change, as the owner says they will? And if they do accept that cash, then they would, in fact, have cash on hand anyway, which undercuts her claim they have no cash on hand...but they don't because they have a sign that says NO CASH. Every other business in the community doesn't blame the city for their own non-compliant policies, as the owner does, and accepts cash in the same circumstances. Plenty of places are happy to take cash and prefer it, and it is required by DC law. I was surprised to see this NO CASH sign after emailing with the owner about it *a year and a half ago.* I walked right out when I saw the sign.) They also now have a self-serve bar which invites the spread of things like norovirus. There are no sneeze guards. They make it hard for me to support them even though I really have been trying to for years.

Zero STARS... This…read moreplace is a complete scam. I ordered a birthday cake and even paid extra for faster shipping, and it still showed up three days late. By the time it arrived, the celebration was already over, so that was a waste. The cake itself was honestly embarrassing. It came damaged and smeared. On top of that, the packaging didn't look sanitary. It was wrapped in cheap cellophane like it came out of someone's basement kitchen, not a professional bakery. I reached out about a refund and got nothing. No response, no follow-up, nothing. Apparently once they have your money, customer service disappears. At this point, I guess I'll just go ahead and dispute it with my bank since that seems like the only way I'll ever see my money again. Funny how that works. :) If you're thinking about ordering from here, JUST DON'T. It's not worth the money, the time, or the disappointment.

Iverson Cookies/The Great Cookie has been a DC area staple for decades. It's been a while since…read moreI've been here, but it felt like a review is long overdue. So I took it upon myself to stop by & get some cookies for myself and my parents before I departed for IL a few weeks ago. The ever so popular cookie flavor there is the prized Snickerdoodle cookies. So, of course, I took it upon myself to order a few. I ordered about 8 cookies for $5 or $10 (apparently, they do not allow ordering by the half dozen nor dozen, but by the eights. Such as 8, 16, etc ). I was a bit judgy & hesitant because the cookies were almost razor thin, and I was used to thicker, regular sized cookies. But as soon as I took a bite, I was shook haha they were so moist, soft, and delightful. Crunchy exterior but the right amount of crunch that it doesn't take away from the softness/moisture. The right amount of sugar and cinnamon. I think what makes this different from other Snickerdoodle cookies is perhaps the thinness and (I THINK, I could be wrong) the possible shortening base. They were so good, I decided not to be selfish and go back in to order my parents some to try I will say since it's been a while since I've been to Iverson Cookies, I got a bit lost because I could not find an entrance point (I'll be honest: I forgot haha ). The entrance point is between Mama Lucia and Chipotle. If you have bad eye vision like me, you'll have to walk up closer to notice. On Yelp and the physical establishment, it's listed as "The Great Cookie." On Google Maps, it's listed as Iverson Cookies. There's plenty of parking. The best way to get there is to drive or Uber. I am unsure if one can Metro there.
