I've been to Samurai a number of times as my kids live in the area and there aren't many hibachi options in Croton. The food is overpriced and underwhelming. It took a recent visit to Edo's hibachi in Port Chester for me to realize how subpar Samurai really is. The salmon there, while they give plenty of it, is not very fresh, the chicken is dry and needs to be smothered in ginger sauce to have any flavor, and the steak is nothing special. The soup is bland, and the salad is limp and covered in watery dressing. The prices aren't cheap either....a typical hibachi dinner will run you around $25. Edo's hibachi is better in almost every way. Soup is tasty with bits of onion and scallions, salad is hearty with delicious dressing, salmon is sushi grade, slightly crispy, and fantastic (my son declared it was the best fish dish he ever had), chicken comes in thick, tender flavorful chunks. This is the problem with lack of competition... Samurai doesn't have local competition around so they've grown lazy, uninspired, and use cheap ingredients and overcharge for them. Skip samurai, save your money, and take the trip to Edo's. read more

Avoid this hibachi spot if you are Celiac or have any dietary restrictions. The staff, chefs and management do not understand and are unwilling to learn for the safety of their customers. First off, I'd like to start by explaining that this was not a one time bad experience and now I'm angry and writing a review. I have been a customer of Samurai for years. I've had dinners with my boyfriend and his three children, we've celebrated birthdays and holidays here, we've even brought our families from out of town in to eat. I have given them ample opportunities to get this right because I like the ambiance and it's close to home. Time after time I leave feeling frustrated and emotionally exhausted from the staff being uneducated about my food allergies. I have been sick so many nights and I've sworn I would never go back but I find myself giving them another chance- mainly because the kids always want to go. This time I will never go back. They just don't get it! Last night I went in with my boyfriend and his three children for dinner. I ordered pad Thai and fried rice ( Gluten-free ) and I said to them absolutely NO SOY SAUCE ON ANYTHING. The server just couldn't comprehend. My first dish ( rice)came and it had soy sauce in it. I sent it back. Then the second dish(pad Thai )came with teriyaki drizzled all over the food and dish. Teriyaki has soy sauce in it!!! They just don't understand! So frustrating. This kind of stuff makes people very sick. So I sent it back and told them to forget about it. I had lost my appetite and did not trust their ability to make this dish safely anymore. The staff's poor English makes it impossible to ensure food safety for people with serious allergies. My advice to anyone with a serious food allergy or celiac would be to avoid this restaurant at all costs. And a note to the restaurant management, You should have warnings on your menus stating cross contamination of gluten is possible. Also, you should have someone there at all times who can communicate properly in English while taking food orders. Samurai, this is basic stuff when you are running a restaurant. read more

We were very good customers until tonight. The chef was terrible, rude, added too much pepper to the rice so you could not eat it and it was raw. I asked for well done chicken and he served it to me raw. When I told him it was raw he starting cleaning the grill. The portions were cut in half and when I said where are the veggies the Manager said they were just for decorations.The Manager was not very sympathetic but after arguing she finally took off my dinner. A Japanese family of 8 sit and is served with in 5 minutes, a family friend? co-owner? Manager / owner comes to talk to them, they appear clueless. Feeling like a SECOND CLASS citizen by now, a little racist / classist -feels like crap either way. 7:25 the food comes - not great. Does not make up for being treated like cattle. wait a FULL HOUR to be served, the food was ok at best for $30 a plate. The fish is fresh well sliced and just the right size (too many restaurants think bigger fish is better sushi - I completely disagree) and the rice is warm and well shaped. This is my go-to joint in the area - which says something from someone who has dined at yasuda, nobu, and many other top nyc sushi "joints". So I am coming here for a few years and forgot to review the "Samurai" Shame on me. First of all, I don't understand why there is even one bad review. I NEVER had a bad meal here (In probably 5 years now). Never had Hibachi because we come for the Sushi. So far the Sushi has been fresh, the rolls are not overloaded with non-fish fillers like in many other places and the quality is consistent. Some specials to spike up the menu every couple weeks. I'm the memo section I indicated to text or call as the door bell doesn't work. There's also a huge sign on the door confirming this. After my third call to the restaurant I asked for a refund as steak is no good cold.... Especially at that price. The woman on the phone asked the driver what happened and he screamed into the phone the door bell doesn't work and he left it outside a long time ago. He also called me derogatory names for his carelessness. I have been coming to Samurai for well over a decade. I used to come here even prior to renovations they did on the walls years back. Tonight within 5 mintues of our hibachi being done, they asked us if we want to box it up. They rushed us the entire meal and we felt they wanted to close early. I left a tip of 13% and then was questioned by the waitress why. She just couldnt grasp why you dont try an rush a family in and out in under a hour. They lost a long tine customer who came often. I had 5 different variations - one of each - and one was better than the other, tuna literally melt in my mouth. And what a great deal too! Perfect for affordable lunch! Not a bad sushi Joint at all. The restaurant is pretty small, which I'm not a huge fan of. People brush past you because the path between the tables are narrow. The hibachi area looked very cramped too. I found the white chairs in the dining room to be wildly uncomfortable. My back was hurting afterwards because they don't provide proper posture. They had some sushi rolls you don't see very often. It tasted nice and fresh,, though I'd say the rolls weren't tight enough. I noticed on several of my rolls, the nori didn't wrap all the way around leaving a gap where it should have closed. We ordered two rolls - one shrimp tempura and one spicy tuna roll. Both rolls were eh and were made kind of strange. The shrimp tempura roll had lettuce in it for some reason and the spicy tuna roll had tempura flakes in it. We then shared the hibachi chicken meal. The meal comes with - soup, salad and a shrimp appetizer. The soup was a mushroom soup that tasted like warm water. The salad was good - of course the dressing made it. The shrimp appetizer were two little tinny tiny shrimp. The veggies and chicken were pretty good, but the noodles were over cooked and covered in grease. If you want some good sushi you need to visit Magoya in Chester, NY - now that is some good sushi! read more
