Fried Catfish is one of my favorite foods so I'm always looking for new place to try. It was getting late and I was already driving near here when I decided to stop. There were quite a few people inside eating and also picking up orders. I order the Catfish po'boy w/ fries, to go. The restaurant is older (used to be an Arby's) and hasn't been renovated. It does look dated. My food came out in about ten or twelve minutes and I was on my way. When I got home and opened the box i was surprised to find an extra catfish strip on top/in addition to the sandwich! Not sure if that is a regular thing or not but it was a great perk for me lol! The po'boy came with lettuce, tomato, red onion, & a special sauce they make that I asked for on the side, and fries. It all tasted really good. Wicked good and a great deal for the amount of food that you get. The oysters and shrimp are large to huge and everything is cooked fresh to order. Beware....don't over order unless you want leftovers. If you order what you think you can eat just looking at the menu you will likely not be able to finish. Great fried shrimp, fish, Red beans and rice! Mac n Chz was dry but tasted good. Wish they brewed real iced tea and not serve fountain tea. Just weird for the south and don't know how they get away with fake tea! This is a nice little place with good flavor! Not fancy at all but quick food. The place could use a good dusting and cleaning, but if you can overlook that you will enjoy. I would try again! read more

I saw a banner ad for Arby's Smokehouse Brisket sandwich when I was surfing the Internet so I decided to go to the nearest Arby's lunch. Unfortunately the Arby's location I went to had closed somewhere along the course of time and became Sam's Southern Eatery. The new place sounded interesting so I decided to give it a shot and came inside. Overall, the decor and style is not changed from the time it was an Arby's. The menu had several po boys, seafood, and chicken. Most menu items are deep fried. The staff is amicable and everyone have excellent service with a smile! I ordered the fried fish po boy, which came with fries, and a drink. The po boy was excellent, well seasoned, and included an extra piece of fish, presumably to err on the side of generosity. The drinks only came in one size: very large 32 oz Styrofoam cups. They serve Coca Cola products. While I well certainly miss an Arby's in Lake Charles, Sam's is a wonderful addition to a part of town that is undergoing economic revival and I will certainly return! read more

Let me start by saying that if you're looking for ambiance, this is not your place. If you're looking for good food, you've found it!! Went today for lunch. It wasn't very busy. It's basically a stripped down Arby's building with a new menu board. Fans were going, but the AC was working just fine (and I'm hot natured). I ordered a fried shrimp and fish dinner, which comes with 2 sides and a roll. My friend ordered a cheese burger and fries. I also ordered fried green tomatoes and they were DELISH!! For $6.99, you get about 10-12 tomatoes! I didn't count, I just started eating. The fish and shrimp were fried to perfection, as were the French fries. Green beans were good, a tiny bit salty. The wait wasn't long at all!!! VERY happy with this place and will be back! Oh, and the two girls working up front during lunch on Aug. 9th were super sweet! read more

Real good food and great price. First of all we got there around 7:30pm and was surprised at the small number of customers. Of course our antennas went up thinking negative thoughts. The menu on the wall was very elaborate showing different combinations of fish oysters and shrimp. Lot of the items could be grilled but since there were no signs of the cholesterol police I went fried all the way. I ordered #31 with fries and coleslaw. The shrimp, fish and oysters were all the temperature of the sun. They don't hesitate to say their food is served hot. I swallowed as much coke and ice to overcome the possibility of destroyed taste buds and waited a short time for the food to cool to try it again. This time it was below molten lava temp and I dug in. Everything was delicious. Especially the shrimp and oysters. They both were crispy on the outside and tender inside. The coleslaw was really good and the fries were fries. They also had burgers and chicken on the menu but went for the seafood. Might try the chicken next time. By the way you order at the counter where they give you a number you display at your table. They bring your food wearing asbestos gloves to your table. Beware the food is very hot but delicious. Chicken strips were great! Shrimp was great. Fish was great. Sides were ok. Oysters were rotted. I know what good oysters smell like. Been raised around them and ate them most my life. This was putrid. Our Waitress and cook took offense to it. She said they served thousands of oysters just today and all were fine, and that all Oysters stink. This oyster was putrid. I gagged at the smell. My hubby bit into it and spat it out. I hope and pray he doesn't get sick. And I hope and pray all those thousands of oysters that they sold just today will not make people sick either. read more

Stopped by Sam's with my grandparents. Food was out really, really fast. I am a large guy, and even I had to take some of my food to go, the portions were so big. The fish was awesome, the shrimp were huge, and the red beans & rice was outstanding. read more

Sam's for the most part has very friendly staff. Expect long lines for services. The fried shrimp is great. The grill shrimp is great as well. I don't really care for the fish its not catfish or talipa the staff couldn't tell what kind of fish it was. Other than would have gotten 4 stars. read more

This is my favorite place to go for grilled or fried fish and jumbo shrimp plate. Huge portions and lower cost than conventional fish restaurant. For instantance...the #20 menu item...you get two catfish filets...5 jumbo shrimp...a roll and two sides for $9.99. Grilled or fried. Your choice. Plenty of food to fill a hungry belly. Outstanding fish breading (thin and definitely holds a lot of fish inside). The jumbo shrimp are the biggest I have seen at this low pricepoint. You gotta try it!! I was sold on it the fist time I tried it. I usually get two fish sauces and two shrimp sauces for no extra cost. A++++++ Awesome place! Food cooked on the spot for you. The fried shrimp is excellent. Hot and flavorful.The crab cake is the typical frozen Pattie that you get in the grocery store.But as you are eating, just do not look at the walls. This place could use a good cleaning!! The ventilation is poor because you smell like grease when you leave. read more

I hate to give bad reviews but I feel compelled to do so in this case. The food was here was on par with a stadium type dry shrimp po-boy. What was worse though is while I was waiting on my food the employees were in the dining room cleaning up and one of the employees got mad at another employee because she accidentally ran the broom across her high top Nikes! Then, the girl with the Nikes got so mad that she started being aggressive towards the other girl and she actually hocked one up and SPIT on the other girl's shoes!!! WOW! I'm pleasantly overwhelmed. I went in there for the Philly cheesesteak kinda nervous because I'm pregnant and finicky. In the past I've ordered cheesesteaks from other places and the meat has always been sinewy. Well first off the smell of seafood and grease hit me at the front door and almost made my pregnant nose turn around. But I stayed and ordered. The po boy was juicy cheesy well cooked and the fries were crisp and seasoned. I'm just mad that I can't finish it all while its piping hot. I've half way eaten my food and I'm full as the portion size is more than expected for a po boy. I will return! read more
