Good small town restaurant with a nice old fashioned hometown feel. Love there steaks and the fried fish is worth the short drive

Sam's is about as local and old school as you can get. Atmosphere that chains and gastropubs spend a fortune to imitate but never get close. Great steaks, reflected in the price, but the locals have no problem paying it. Everything else is always really good - sides - salads - veg - and they usually serve up a pickle tray upon your arrival for dinner. Menu is on the wall above the bar. Dinner is one thing, but lunch is something else! For lunch, there will be a special. I think it is like always $6.00 or $6.50. When I was there last Tuesday it was Mac & cheese (homemade) and a chili dog (homemade chili). You either get the daily special or you order anything they have the ingredients to make based on the main menu. As a default, they always have hamburgers and buns. My wife had the chef salad with steak (yes, an amazing filet cooked medium and sliced on top) and I had the burger. They locals that took us both had the special. They only serve lunch 11-1 so don't be late. Virtually everyone there knows everyone there. They all sit in the same place. Pretty awesome experience. read more

Everything was good except for the steak. Nostalgia is strong at this place which is what got my wife and I to pay Sam's Place a visit recently. It has been a while since we have been there so we decided to go back. Service was excellent throughout! The staff couldn't have been nicer. The veggie tray was nice, the salads were good, and the potatoes were good. Unfortunately, our steaks weren't up to par. They were very tough and hard to cut. If I'm paying $40 for a steak I expect better. I could have gotten a better steak at a chain restaurant for half the price. I want to give them another chance, but it may be a while before we go back. Again, everyone was very kind and the service was great. It had been years since we last dined here. We made the drive and happily nothing much has changed and the food remains as great as ever. They had new to us additions of the blue cheese wedge salad and strawberry spinach salad with hot bacon dressing as options instead of a regular tossed salad. We had one of each. I loved the wedge and could've just had that. It was perfect. The warm bacon dressing had a bit too much vinegar but on the salad it evened out. It all comes as part of the meal in waves so you can enjoy each course. The potatoes with hot and crisp. We had chicken, fish and shrimp. I'm so glad we all could share. I had plenty of fish left to take home and make a fish sandwich the next day. You won't go away disappointed or hungry. Great service and very reasonable prices for the amount of food. The interior is the same as it was over 20 years ago. We did get the famous drink and it was chocolatey. read more

Don't let the facade fool you. I drove two and a half hours out of my way to have dinner at Sam's Place in Blakeslee, OH. This is an old style, local bar, restaurant in a six building blip on the road map, but oh my heavens, the filet mignon is to die for!!! - A MUST STOP FOR A DELICIOUS MEAL! The bar at Sam's Place is cozy, comfortable, warm and welcoming. A dining room is annexed to the bar area. A veggie plate was presented when I sat down. I ordered a spinach salad. It was served with carrots, onions, strawberries, croutons, Blue Cheese crumbles and warm bacon dressing. - DELICIOUS! My entre was a 10oz filet mignon, medium rare, seasoned with a hint of Worcestershire Sauce (12oz and 14oz cuts available) with fresh cut, homemade potato chip fries. - THE FRIES ARE ADDICTIVE and THE STEAK WAS MOUTHWATERING, TENDER AND DELECTIBLE! We have been coming back to the Lake James/Angola, Indiana area for over 35 years. We live in the Bay Area of Northern California. My wife, Rosemary and her two brothers grew up on a farm in Decatur,Ind. Our cousins, George and Jane Gear, treated us to a small town great family experience, SAM' PLACE. Martin L's review says it all. We drove about 40 miles on a Friday night. There were eight of us. We were comfortable with the steaks, drinks, and the prices are reasonable. No complaints. If you are looking for a good steak from a dive restaurant, this is the place. The prices might make you think the sides are fancy, but they are not. It was good food and I enjoyed the small town feel to the place, but I also had mixed feelings about the quality of the dinner rolls and side salads. For the price, I would think those two things could pick it up a little. Good place overall and I will be back. read more

Way..... Overpriced! There is like three things on the menu on the wall. You choose from on and how you like it. It isn't horrible food, but for the price ($40 or so) for a steak, it's bad. My boyfriend and I traveled two hours into the area to buy a truck, Sam's Place was highly recommended by the salesmen and it far surpassed our expectations! Randy, the owner, had our food waiting for us as the salesman had called ahead to let him know we were coming - and paid for our meal! (Thanks Wade!) Randy is by far the nicest person we've encountered, he spent time getting to know us, our jobs, hobbies, hometowns. He gave us the whole nine yards - Mose Hopper's (the best dessert you'll ever eat), cheesecake, homemade chips, rolls, etc. The food was delicious and the company was even better. He even boxed up some extra home made chips for our drive home. Sam's is east of Edon, while it may not be the land of milk and honey, if you are looking for a steak in NW Ohio, look no farther. Four generations of the Mohre family have served t-bones and filets along with their signature hand cut fried potato chips to all who venture into Blakeslee. Sam's is well worth the detour. Don't leave without finishing your meal with a Mose Hopper; a non-dietary concoction of ice cream and alcohol that maybe the best desert you ever drank, but don't ask what's in it. Family secret. There is no menu.just a piece of card board on the wall. Just order your steak small, medium, large or extra large. On Friday's they add fried Islandic cod and the first Wednesday of each month Dorthy, the matriarch, returns to the kitchen to preside over prime rib. Locals fill the booths at lunch when one of the best hand patted burgers you'll find are served. Current owner Randy Mohre welcomes all from behind the bar, his sister Mary Sue is repidly moving from table to table making sure everything is to your liking. My wife and I visited Northwest Ohio for a family wedding. Looking for dinner the night we arrived we found that the options were limited, not surprising as the population in the area is small. I grew up in the Midwest, so I was aware that I probably shouldn't spend a lot of time looking for authentic Greek food, but a steak house seemed a good bet. Sam's Place is, as someone else commented, a dive with a half-dozen or so Formica tables adjacent to the bar. It came complete with a couple of guys drinking and laughing uproariously at their own jokes. The service was prompt to say the least--bread rolls were being put on the table while I was still trying to pull my chair out. Remember those supermarket flats of a dozen pull-apart rolls you used to get at Safeway? Well, they're back. I ordered a 10 oz tenderloin (the smallest on the menu) and my wife ordered prime rib. They came with salad, a real lot of fresh thin-sliced potatoes that were deep fried, and dessert. Veggies were not mentioned, although we could have, but did not, had applesauce. The salad choices were chopped lettuce, or spinach with (I think) bacon and feta instead of the more usual chopped boiled egg. I believe the latter salad was a recently added choice to the menu. The potatoes were quite good and not too salty, and the serving copious. Too much salt is to my mind very easy to do. I expected the tenderloin to be like an inch or or inch and a half thick and at 10 oz. not too large. What I got was 3 separate kind of scrawny pieces, which I assume added up to 10 oz. I couldn't help but think steak scraps. To Sam's credit, I asked for rare and it was. Not to Sam's credit, the steak was prepared in A-1 steak sauce. That's a choice I'd rather make for myself, and I certainly wouldn't make it on an expensive cut of meat. Bearnaise, sure, but A-1? I'm far from a steak expert, but this seemed tender enough, cooked as I had requested, and tasted like, guess what, A-1 steak sauce. My wife's prime rib fared considerably better (perhaps the kitchen had run out of A-1?). Again, it was tender, with a quite mild flavor. Dessert was the choice of a small cube of generic cheesecake (I kept looking for that Safeway) or a small cube of generic cheesecake. Draft beer was not available, and the wine choices came as maybe 4 fluid ounces served in 5 ounce glasses. The speciality of the house, beside the steaks, appeared to be some sort of alcoholic milkshake, which could be ordered after dinner. We passed. One regularly hears the comment 'Hey, it is what it is..' But this was what it was for pushing 80 bucks with tax and tip, which is completely absurd. read more
