So it had been a bit since I have eaten from this food truck (when the rolls were $16). After contemplating pizza from the nearby truck, I got over the $26 sticker shock and ordered. The mixed reviews here really surprise me! I had tried Sam's Chowdermobile once before in Half Moon Bay and had a great experience. This time, they were at the Gordon Biersch Night Market in San Jose. I ordered the Regular Lobster Roll ($25), which was ready in about 5 minutes. Service was friendly and packaging was convenient. The Lobster Roll itself was fantastic - heaps of tasty lobster chunks on a delicious toasted bun. I do like Sam's chowder house a lot and decided to hit up their food truck since parking is bad at their restaurant. I had to knock off a couple of stars because my lobster roll lacked flavor and there weren't enough sauce. I didn't see sauce in my roll and was disappointing. The bread was the redemption. I don't think I would come back here even though our food came out fast. Maybe too fast that they forgot to put on any sauce. I wanted my friend to try their food but she wasn't a fan. Per some reason, the chowderMobile shows up in our neighborhood quite often. They must know someone because they pull up in Cambrian and folks just line up. I love their food but the half Moon Bay location is just too far away to drive. So when the chowdermobile showed up, I decided to drive over and pick up our favorite large lobster rolls. We also got their fries with bay seasoning and their Keylime pie. Other folks were loading up on Fish and chips and clam chowder and calamari. It was remarkable to see all the cars parked and people lined up getting food. I was not disappointed. And the prices were right. I got two huge lobster rolls, bay fries, coleslaw, and Keylime pie for 50 bucks. There is enough for two meals over the course of two days. You're going to pay more for the lobster, but the fried shrimp sandwich is a very reasonable price. Both were very tasty and worth trying out. Happy National Clam Chowder Day! 2/25/16 'Twas National Clam Chowder Day and when I searched my Yelp app nothing really good came up nearby in North SJ. Then I remembered that Sam's Chowder Mobile (SCM) usually makes the rounds up North through all the Tech Companies, and ―just by happenstance― there they were at Nimble Storage! For those who've been living under a rock, SCM is the Mobile version of the popular/touristy Sam's Chowder House (https://goo.gl/X31VZM) in HMB. SCM is continually lauded with Best Food Truck awards (http://goo.gl/7dkgEr) and their Lobster Roll was named one of the Top 5 Sandwiches in America (http://goo.gl/YYMgGu) by NBC's Today Show. I've visited SCM in the past and always thought it was good stuff, albeit a bit pricey. Far be it from me to deny my kismet, and away I went! Clam Chowder- Can't be called a Chowder House without having some solid Chowdah! Well, unfortunately this stuff wasn't much better than canned soup. The broth was watery and had way too much Celery for my liking, but there was a fair amount of Clams. A poor showing for National Chowder Day... 2.5* Lobster Roll- It's been a few years since I've had Sam's much vaunted Lobstah Roll, and now I remember why.... They load up the front of the roll with tons of Lobster, but by the time you get to the back you're chewing on mostly bread. The Lobster was cooked fine, but came out cold and drenched in Butter. They give you a small side of Coleslaw if you want to add a little sweetness and crunch--not to mention it also helped moisten the bread, which tasted a bit funky and old. Lobster 3* Slaw 4* Bread 2* Service & Ambiance- This is actually a nice location to catch a food truck as Nimble provides lounge chairs and picnic tables with umbrellas. The employees were fast, efficient and friendly. I went to a wedding last week that was catered by Sam's Chowder Mobile. There were two menu options, so the roommate and I got one of each. *Lobster clambake: one whole fresh maine lobster per person, with clams, mussels, corn on the cob, red potatoes and savory sausage, served with side of watermelon and coleslaw The lobster clambake was laid out like a buffet. The roommate chose this one, so he basically got a little bit of everything. The food was good, but since he waited for me to get my food, his plate got cold. The butter for the lobster hardened before we even got the chance to eat anything! Sam's chowder mobile: *Sam's lobster roll: maine lobster, warmed butter, toasted bun *Baja style taco: with cabbage, chipotle creme fraiche and pineapple salsa in a warm corn tortilla, fried fish *New england clam chowder: little neck clams, yukon gold potatoes, smoked bacon, cream *Fish 'n chips: deep fried, crispy pollack, old bay fries, 2 piece *Spicy popcorn shrimp: served with housemade cocktail sauce *Lobster taco (2) *Spicy shrimp taco I chose the chowder mobile. They basically offered everything they normally have on their menu minus a couple of items. And it was unlimited. Unfortunately, since there was only one truck, there was a super long line. It took me about 45 mins to get food. Since I stood in line so long, I just got one of everything except the vegetarian tacos. My favorite item was the fish and chips. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. And hot which was a nice break from all the lukewarm and cold food we had. I've been to their restaurant and enjoyed their food. As a food truck, I'm sure their food is good as well. But for catering weddings, I don't think one truck is enough. You shouldn't have to wait almost an hour for your dinner. Our company had a luncheon for its employees and Sam's Chowder Mobile was chosen from a list of several catering services providing food and refreshments. There were two mobile trucks to accomodate the long lines that they were anticipating, but it was conducted in a orderly manner. There was no shortage of food, so everything was pre planned with one line taking the orders and giving out the number and the other one calling out for pickup it was very well coordinated. I had the fish and chips that came with coleslaw and tartar sauce that was pure delicious. My husband ordered 2 andouille sausage po'boys yesterday. When he received his order and checked it he saw they had given him 2 shrimp po'boys. He went up to the window to let them know and the person working told him that they were out of andouille. My husband pointed out that he didn't say anything when he took his order. The person working told him that it's on the board and he "didn't say anything" and wouldn't change it. Honestly I don't understand how they thought that choosing what food to give us because what we ordered was out of stock is acceptable. They could have let my husband know when he tried to place the order instead of just choosing that we get shrimp instead. I used to support this food truck when it came around Elan Apartments but I cannot do so after this incident. Other than the awful service, the shrimp po'boy was not good. The food options at work range from bearable to downright awful, so when there's a food truck that rolls around the vicinity with a lobster roll...you know I am there! From my general experience of lobster rolls, they are all fairly expensive and they are not equal despite the price. Case in point...this lobster roll at full size is almost $18, but wow you definitely get your money's worth! If you don't believe me, check my picture. Absolutely stuffed with lobster, but it isn't soaked in butter or grease so I'm not feeling like I'm about to have a heart attack while eating it. The roll is buttered though (as you would expect), but it provides great contrast to the lobster. Definitely worth the splurge for sure! If you want to skip the line you either have to come early or late like 130pm but be careful cause they might run out of stuff. By the time we ordered, they had run out of prawns and clam chowder. Food: Shorty lobster roll ($11)- I enjoyed this roll the most. The bread is toasted n kinda tasted like a garlic bread. If you get it, eat it there cause it can get a lil soggy just chilling in the box. The full sized lobster roll is 18 bux but honestly the shorty is enough and it allows you to try other things on the menu. Spicy popcorn shrimp ($8.75)- You get a crap ton of shrimp but i guess its expected as ur payin nearly 9 bux. I felt the shrimp was good as well as the texture. It was perfectly crisp. While I wouldnt say this dish was anything really special, it was def well made. Clam Chowder- This was my least favorite dish. I enjoyed the contents of the chowder but the texture was very watery. I saw Sam's Chowder Mobile parked in Palo Alto so I decided to make that my lunch destination. I sort of wish I hadn't. $26 for a lobster roll and clam chowder that just wasn't satisfying. The lobster roll had about two claws worth of meat so the portion was good but it was over cooked and chewy. The roll and lobster meat tasted like both were dipped in butter and then cooked. Don't get me wrong, I love butter but it tasted like buttered bread with buttered lobster. There was no cohesion tying the meat to the bread. Some people may like that so it's a matter of preference but it really is inexcusable to overcook the lobster. It should be a crime to cook lobster till it is dry and rubbery. I know clam chowder is not cooked to order but at least serve it to order. When I asked for a clam chowder, the cashier reached over and grabbed me a container filled with chowder and handed it to me. It was warm but not hot. Major fail in my point of view. I've never liked the actual restaurant that much, the one in Half Moon Bay and also when they had a location in Palo Alto. You can say that I suffer from a case of "having eaten too much lobster roll and chowder in Boston" syndrome. The good thing about the chowder mobile is that you get to focus on the food. While I never liked their chowder (I'm sorry, but it's really hard to get good chowder on the west coast, especially ones that don't cheat with adding bacon), their lobster roll isn't bad. They can usually fill the itch when I haven't been to the other places in the peninsula as much. If you're in SF and happen upon this truck, I think it would be a good meal. If you're on the peninsula though -- trust me, there are way better lobster rolls to be had. I was roaming around Golden Gate park and came across the Sam's truck. With a hankering for seafood, I scoured the menu and quickly honed in on the lobster roll (one of the few foods I often crave.) At $18 the lobster roll is par for course as far as cost is concerned - it's served 'Maine style' with drawn butter and some Old Bay seasoning on a toasted and buttered split roll. I have to admit, this is one of the most generous lobster rolls I've found in SF - it's literally stuffed with claw meat. You also get a small serving of coleslaw which was very good - a nice balance of vinegar and sweetness. July 10 2013 I have been tracking their food truck locations religiously for the past 2 months. Sadly, our schedules have never been in sync. Imagine my elated joy when they were at PacBio parking lot (Menlo park), just as I was driving from Sunnyvale to San Mateo!!! Of course, I had to make a pit stop and try out their infamous lobster roll (my sisters are constantly raving about it!) I ordered 2 lobster rolls (one for mommy dearest, one for piggy me!) and a side of Old Bay Seasoned fries. I requested some lemons to spritz on my lobster roll (they were very accommodating.) Okay - fries were good. Probably could've been more crisper but weren't all bad. I never thought to use Old bay seasoning on it, but that was pretty tasty and goes well with the lobster. As for the Lobster Roll - I bit into it and thought man, i'd leave my hubby for this!! (umm that was a joke I would never leave him, but dayum this roll is just so dayum good!!) I did squeeze a lemons onto it as a personal preference. The combination of tangy lemon juice and buttery bread with the massive lobster meat was MIND BLOWING. Literally, I had to pick up pieces of my mind from the floor and table after it exploded. The meat was so generously STUFFED into the roll that it was falling out, but I didn't mind one bit coz I scooped up every fallen piece and lovingly placed them into my mouth where I hoped they would make babies, producing more lobster mind-plosions for me. My mother loved her lobster roll as well and even after I told her the price of it, she said she'd pay that any day of the week for that amount of flavourful meat. She even went on to say, that it was cheaper than buying her own lobsters to cook, de-shell and eat! So I saw these at Off The Grid: Serramonte Center a week ago, but too late. I'd already eaten my feelings in the form of a Senor Sisig burrito. So I put a pin in it; and said... next time. Shortie lobster roll can be described as a VERY small portion of dry, chewy lobster meat served on a roll saturated in butter then grilled. The fish (of the fish and chips) was nicely prepared. A little greasy, but not over the top. Nice chunk of seemingly fresh fish. Fries were standard fare sprinkled with (I think), bay seasoning or something similar. Clam chowder was kinda boring. They left big chunks of bay leaf in the soup. Not a lot of flavor, but not the worst I've had either. This might be a repeat post because mobile trucks are, well, mobile. Mobile clam chowder? Awesome! Sam's Chowdermobile visited Palo Alto, and because one of the interns really loves clam chowder, we decided to make the 15 minute trek over to the truck's location. Most of us ordered their CLAM CHOWDER (duh), a small portion for $5.50 (tax included) with oyster crackers on the side. The clam chowder doesn't have a thick consistency, and the stock has a sour creamy taste to it, but overall it's some good clam chowdah. They throw in some nice chunks of potato and celery, along with large (but somewhat skimpy) pieces of clam. They even threw in some fresh clam shell for my serving! Can't get fresher than that! A side note: one of the coordinators says that she prefers to go to their actual restaurant in Half Moon Bay for their lobster roll. Such wonderful catered service. Like amazing. We got a surf and turf catered deal with steaks and lobster and clam chowder and it was great! Kelsey in the catering department and her team were fast and prompt and definitely made the transactions fun and mostly painless.... (minus the cost lol which is expected). Thank you for making our summer event such a success. Please give them a try if you are interested in a fun clambake for a party or company event. Definitely well worth it. Very cool to watch them build it all up and cook the food right in front of you. read more
