    Sambuca

Sambuca is a lovely little Italian restaurant on Edinburghs Causewayside. Sambuca specialises in traditional Italian fish and steak dishes, but with a modern twist - the restaurants namesake drink is poured onto the dish and set alight as your meal is being served - a truely wonderful sight. However, as to be expected, this often leaves an odd aniseed taste, which has only worked with around half of the dishes I have eaten at Sambuca. That said, food is very delicious and well priced. If you are willing to ignore the need for a decorater, Sambuca is a nice restaurant to go to for somehting a bit different.

    Review Highlights - Sambuca Restaurant

I opted for the Spaghetti Marinara which had a whole range of seafood, from squid to clams, in a white wine sauce.

Good food, fast service. I skipped the drinks and dessert for budgetary reasons. The bill for 3…read morepeople (one of whom had a glass of wine) was the equivalent of US$74. But it all came crashing down at the end when I went to pay and the waiter tried to guilt me into tipping - which is not a common practice in the UK. He hovered over me as I put my card in the machine and the dreaded percentage options showed up on the screen as well as "No Tip" and "Custom Amount." I felt I was back in the U.S., where there's quite a lot of controversy about these screens but at least the staff usually look away at that time. This guy helpfully explained that I could tip - or not tip. Yeah, thanks. OK, buddy. No tip for you. I should have gone to Wetherspoon's.

Their website looked really upmarket, with promises of amazing service and dedication to preparing the best and freshest food etc etc, so I was expecting it to be quite pricey. I wouldn't have minded paying twice as much as we did for the food, if not more; our meal was that good. We went for their 3 Course Set Lunch offer which will set you back a grand total of £6.50 a head (?!) and this place is now my favourite Italian restaurant in Edinburgh. It's nothing fancy, but then it doesn't try to be: from the second you walk in you immediately pick up on the family-run, authentic vibe and it makes you feel really relaxed. I love italian food and I've been searching all over Edinburgh for that perfect little local Italian place, the one you go to when you can't be bothered to cook but still want to go somewhere you know will be good yet cheap. I've lived here for 4 years now, and I think I can stop looking.

Sora Lella is an incredibly special place; the first 100% Roman vegan restaurant in Edinburgh. Book…read morea table online (you can order delivery too, but I don't think some of their menu holds up very well this way). FOOD What I've tried... + Olive Di Nocellara (marinated olives): can you go wrong with olives? It felt like the bowl we got when we dined in was enormous (we were able to snack on them throughout our meal), while what we got for takeaway was much smaller. + Suppli Romani (two fried bolognese rice balls filled with mozzarella, served with a mayo dipping sauce): ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I'VE EVER EATEN. We literally talk about the Suppli Romani at least once a week. My partner and I kept "joking" that we'd like to each get three or four orders of it, dump them on the Rocket Salad, and call it a meal. I probably will do this the next time I'm here. Don't judge me. + Rocket Salad (with parmesan, balsamic glaze, and olive oil): again, it's a hearty portion when you're dining in but it's a noticeably smaller portion for takeaway. + Gnocchi Salsiccia e Creme Tartufata (potato dumplings in a creamy truffle sauce with sausages): a really well-filled bowl with gnocchi that was *just* truffle-y enough without being overpowering, I didn't particularly like the little sausages though. - Penne Alla Vodka (with smoked seitan in a creamy tomato and vodka sauce): the only real miss we've had here. The whole dish was underwhelming in flavor and congealed quite quickly. - Spaghetti Caci e Pepe (with parmesan, black pepper, and truffle sauce): Not for me, only because you can get essentially the same flavors in the Gnocchi version. - Pepperoni pizza: I don't know that pizza is what I'd come here for, only because there are so, so many vegan pizza options in the city where as the pasta here is unique. + Tiramisu (coffee, sponge, mascarpone cream, cocoa, and a touch of amaretto): the perfect size for sharing with someone! + Biscoff Cheesecake (if they have it): not perfect for sharing, but absolutely necessary to end the meal with! What I still want to try (because other reviewers have raved about them)... 1. Mezze Maniche alla Zozzona (tomato and cream sauce with bacon, sausage, egg, onion, black pepper); 2. Mezze Manicha alla Carbonara (carbo cream, homemade bacon, and black pepper); 3. Zoccolette Alla Sorentina (oven-baked pizza dumplings with tomato sauce, mozzarella, basil, olive oil). What I wish they offered... I think I've seen online that at one point they had an aubergine parmigiana. I would LOVE to see that come back! DRINK + Get a glass of wine or anything off their Spritz Menu! ATMOSPHERE It's a very intimate space, but so charming.Go to the bathroom and learn what Sti Cazzi means. You're welcome.

The garlic bread was also quite good and the vegan tiramisu yum yum yum. If I had a terminal Cancer diagnosis I'd go back there and eat every day!
