Papilio

I've never understood why Papilio is never busy! They do great lunch and dinner offers, and is in one of the main student areas. Cheap food + students = perfect! But whenever I'm in here there's never an atmosphere. But that doesn't put me off! This Italian restaurant is really traditional in style and taste. You can tell that everything they make is made on premises and tastes really fresh. As a consequence the service is a bit on the slow side, but the food is delicious. Hearty food. Ever since my first visit I've always gone for the Spaghetti Carbonara (I know, adventurous) and I always have it because it is so delicious! Their portion sizes are just right, and everything looks delicious. My mum highly recommends the Smoked Salmon pasta, and she has good taste!

Papilio is one of the finest Italian restaurants which I have come across in Edinburgh. Located in the centre of the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh, it is a great place for students to go to for their lunch or dinner. The place is quite small inside the restaurant, but it gives it a cosy rather than a cramped feel, and the decor is very authentically Italian with a Italian music playing in the background. The atmosphere is really friendly and lively inside and the waiters were lovely and highly efficient in their service. Papilio offer a wide range of authentic Italian cuisine on their menu including Pizzas, pastas and risotto, as well as steak and chicken dishes. I had the pizza pescatora with shellfish which was delicious, there didn't skimp on the topping which was good and there was lots of cheese too - yum! My friend had the spaghetti carbonara which looked amazing and she said it was lovely. The prices are also excelled in Papilio and I think you would be hard pushed to another Italian restaurant in Edinburgh with the same high quality of service and delicious tasting food. Papilio is now my first port of call when I fancy an Italian meal in Edinburgh.

Calamari et salad

With less than a hour to scoff what delights Papilio's offered the clock was ticking. So great that they have walk-in tables even though the place was booked solid for later. Met at the door by the manager and with a polite request that there is a table for you and your party but we will need it back for less than an hours time for guests whom booked it for 7pm. No problem it shall be done, we said to the manager. Service very friendly, chatty staff but service was quick, as they needed the table it was like service for us was in rush mode, enabling the food to be prepared, delivered and scoffed. That being said undue care was slightly at play with the texture and taste of some dishes. Calamari was slightly rubbery but otherwise ok and came with a salad, Tagliatelle Papilio was their special so obviously I had to give it a go since it was our first visit. Other members of our party had chicken stuffed with spinach, with accompanied veggies and a very very heavy balsamic vinegary sauce. As we were sharing samples, for me it kind of spoilt the dish that veggies with the chooks were drowning in salt, so sharing meant it kind of spoiled that dish for me and didn't eat a lot of it. A fine pizza-margarita completed the quadrant of plates. Ambience and friendliness of staff were second to none, fussing over us not just because someone else required the table, but what I witnessed was their manner with all guests. If Papilio's was the trend at the moment then I guess more folks would venture out to experience the face yoga that comes with the sounds made when the food arrives. Fans of Italian restaurants in Edinburgh should be happy that I would recommend coming here even if it's just for an afternoon coffee with a group of friends, but especially for evening meal make sure you book and leave enough time for coffee or finishing that bottle of wine. To get a healthy glow from smiling at the happiness inside a room, even with its slight flaw we experienced, I can't wait for the next time.

Dimly lit and getting darker as the night goes on, with staff welcoming you like an old friend and an impeccable music selection. - No, seriously, did you hack my Spotify, Montpeliers? It's all so effortless and fun, and above all, done very well. I am happy to indulge. My spicy mango sour did the trick. I sometimes like to ask for a recommendation when I can't decide and Iona's tip was spot on. The cocktail menu is extensive; there's something for all tastes. This was delicious. - Not too spicy, not too sweet. Followed up by the cherry nuts shot with black cherry rum and amaretto. This cherry-lover approves and this served as a dessert to round the night off to a better end. Was it okay that they had run out of shot glasses and opted for a short cocktail glass and also topped it with a tonne of cream? Umm, YES. No disappointment here. Service was attentive despite the bar overflowing on a Friday night. This was just what we were after and is a wonderful spot for a drink. You'd be missing out if you didn't have a cocktail. If you're not drinking, there's an interesting selection of mocktails too. Cheers, Montpeliers! - You know just how it's done.

From the outside, the Italian mosaic-style writing is really quaint and lures you in, but I did not appreciate the harsh tiles on the inside, and I don't know which 'mood' the lighting was going for, but it was near impossible to see my friends, let alone my food. When we asked for a candle, we were told that there were problems with the electricity, so probably shouldn't have an open flame. This made us want to stay... The food was ok. Average, nothing special. I'm a traditionalist, so opted for the Carbonara (surprise surprise) and it was quite tasteless. To be honest, it wasn't worth the calories. My friend said she saw something black scutter across the floor at one point. The restaurant seemed clean enough and everything was laid out well, but there was something not quite right. I'm a bit hesitant to report of my bad experience in Inca as it is always so busy, so must attract custom from somewhere. There must be an amazing dish that I haven't heard about, or something I'm missing. When I find it, Ill let you know. Until then, stay clear.

Having said that, the atmosphere inside the restaurant is great as the staff are warm and inviting and make you feel at home straight away. I ordered their four seasons pizza which was tasty, had lots of toppings and cheese on it and it had a good crust on it - not too thin or burnt. Inca serves a range of pizza and pasta dishes, as well as salads and garlic bread. The food is very reasonably priced and they have a good selection of beers and wine. I went to Inca on a Thursday night and it was fairly quiet inside but it is likely to be busier at the weekends. I did find it fairly dark inside, but | think the staff wanted to create an 'ambiance', which is fine as long as you can see what you are eating!

I had some sort of fried food with nduja (a spicy sausage that I forgot how to spell) for my starter and it was incredible. But the best part was the service. The workers made me feel welcome. It felt like the whole restaurant was a big family gathering. Shame that the menu changes because what I had was great and I would order it again. Will come back

Adorable little Italian restaurant with authentic flavors, fresh dishes, and friendly service!…read moreHighly rated and for good reason, we had to book a reservation in advance and you get charged for no-shows or last minute cancellations as the restaurant is very small and would lose out on a table. The menu is rotational and the one in my photos are for the summer; we ordered a side of bread that came with olive oil/balsamic vinegar and was given a complimentary cup of gazpacho. They complimented each other very well and it was so wonderfully fresh with tomato, onion, basil, and oregano. My sister ordered the seafood linguini & I got the Agnello (Scottish lamp chops with veggies & potatoes). The linguini was quite salty that made the dish a bit unbearable but my lamb chops were absolutely delicious! They were a lot smaller than I anticipated, even though there were four I left the restaurant pretty hungry which was disappointing.

Bellissimo! Don't let this tiny restaurant fool you, it can definitely pack in some big flavours!…read more Our friends recommended Piatto Verde to us one Friday night. Italian is not my first choice of restaurant but they told me how amazing this place is so we decided to give it a go. We were warmly greeted as they accommodated our party of five. This place is not showy at all and the ambiance is homely and relaxed. It is tiny though with about eight tables, this all adds to the authentic Italian charm. And after a few carafes of the house red you feel like you're at an old friends for dinner! The menu consists of Italian classics with a great selection of starters, pizzas and pastas. I went for the squid to start and a gluten-free pasta dish for my main. The squid was well cooked and the sauce delicious. My pasta was amazing! The simple sauce of mushrooms, pesto and cream was beautifully seasoned - proper comfort food. We greedily went for dessert, the profiteroles. UNBELIEVABLE! Huge and obviously homemade, instead of a chocolate sauce they were coated in a chocolate mousse. Delicious! Coming in at just over £20 for a 3-course meal and wine I will definitely be paying Piatto Verde another visit. Even if it is just for the profiteroles! Cheers, Amy

Did I just find my go-to Italian joint? Oh boy oh boy, I think that I did!!…read more I've walked past Piatto Verde at least a half a million times before. If you live in the area, it's easy to bypass the rows of kebab shops and small ambiguous food joints as "meh." One night in particular we walked past PV, peered inside, and said, "Nah. It's so small!" Lucky for me I didn't let that stop me in the end! With some friends in tow and a reservation booked in advance (you definitely want to do this on evenings, because did I mention how wee it is?), we marched in and were promptly seated. P.V. itself is cozy and shabby in the sort of mismatched, cozy, rather charming way only a place that doesn't take itself too seriously can accomplish. It has about four, maybe five tables, tops, but one of them could seat quite a few, so if you have a group you could perhaps squeeze 8 or so inside (there were also some chillens runnin' round, so there's that!). After being seated we perused the surprisingly extensive menu--any place that has more than one standard vegetarian main to try totally gets points in my book, and my other half and I were hard pressed to choose just which one we wanted to try. A fairly priced and solid carafe of house red wine was purchased, starters and mains were ordered, and the rest is history. Our server was around just enough to be thorough, just friendly enough to seem genuine, and also hollered in Italian to her buddies in the back several times, something that I think added to the authenticity of the place. ;) And the FOOD. If you're expecting something incredo-fancy, this is not your joint. But if you want the kind of creamy Italian goodness you can't quite ever manage to cook for yourself, this is your guy. I had a mushroom tortelloni main, and I promptly devoured it. My husband's calzone was enormous! Not only that, but our starters--olives for our friends, and for us mixed platters of mozzarella and tomatoes and the like--were simple and lovely. But I think what really sealed the deal for me was, as another Yelper has mentioned, the profiteroles. I made the mistake of ordering the perfectly adequate tiramisu, whereas my husband got the profiterole. After one bite I was hulking out with envy (he was nice enough to trade me one for some tiramisu, or I would have thrown myself on the ground and had a profiterole-less tantrum). DAMN were those things delicious. I've never actually had a profiterole before, but I reckon these would be tough boots to fill in the future. Summary: a lovely joint if you're looking for a casual, delicious evening (or lunch) meal at a surprisingly reasonable price! I'm absolutely going to return in the future. And you'll probably see me stuffing my gob with profiteroles.
