Italian is not my first choice of restaurant but they told me how amazing this place is so we decided to give it a go.

But it all came crashing down at the end when I went to pay and the waiter tried to guilt me into tipping - which is not a common practice in the UK. He hovered over me as I put my card in the machine and the dreaded percentage options showed up on the screen as well as "No Tip" and "Custom Amount." I felt I was back in the U.S., where there's quite a lot of controversy about these screens but at least the staff usually look away at that time. This guy helpfully explained that I could tip - or not tip. Yeah, thanks. OK, buddy. No tip for you. I should have gone to Wetherspoon's.

Their website looked really upmarket, with promises of amazing service and dedication to preparing the best and freshest food etc etc, so I was expecting it to be quite pricey. I wouldn't have minded paying twice as much as we did for the food, if not more; our meal was that good. We went for their 3 Course Set Lunch offer which will set you back a grand total of £6.50 a head (?!) and this place is now my favourite Italian restaurant in Edinburgh. It's nothing fancy, but then it doesn't try to be: from the second you walk in you immediately pick up on the family-run, authentic vibe and it makes you feel really relaxed. I love italian food and I've been searching all over Edinburgh for that perfect little local Italian place, the one you go to when you can't be bothered to cook but still want to go somewhere you know will be good yet cheap. I've lived here for 4 years now, and I think I can stop looking.

Dimly lit and getting darker as the night goes on, with staff welcoming you like an old friend and an impeccable music selection. - No, seriously, did you hack my Spotify, Montpeliers? It's all so effortless and fun, and above all, done very well. I am happy to indulge. My spicy mango sour did the trick. I sometimes like to ask for a recommendation when I can't decide and Iona's tip was spot on. The cocktail menu is extensive; there's something for all tastes. This was delicious. - Not too spicy, not too sweet. Followed up by the cherry nuts shot with black cherry rum and amaretto. This cherry-lover approves and this served as a dessert to round the night off to a better end. Was it okay that they had run out of shot glasses and opted for a short cocktail glass and also topped it with a tonne of cream? Umm, YES. No disappointment here. Service was attentive despite the bar overflowing on a Friday night. This was just what we were after and is a wonderful spot for a drink. You'd be missing out if you didn't have a cocktail. If you're not drinking, there's an interesting selection of mocktails too. Cheers, Montpeliers! - You know just how it's done.

From the outside, the Italian mosaic-style writing is really quaint and lures you in, but I did not appreciate the harsh tiles on the inside, and I don't know which 'mood' the lighting was going for, but it was near impossible to see my friends, let alone my food. When we asked for a candle, we were told that there were problems with the electricity, so probably shouldn't have an open flame. This made us want to stay... The food was ok. Average, nothing special. I'm a traditionalist, so opted for the Carbonara (surprise surprise) and it was quite tasteless. To be honest, it wasn't worth the calories. My friend said she saw something black scutter across the floor at one point. The restaurant seemed clean enough and everything was laid out well, but there was something not quite right. I'm a bit hesitant to report of my bad experience in Inca as it is always so busy, so must attract custom from somewhere. There must be an amazing dish that I haven't heard about, or something I'm missing. When I find it, Ill let you know. Until then, stay clear.

Having said that, the atmosphere inside the restaurant is great as the staff are warm and inviting and make you feel at home straight away. I ordered their four seasons pizza which was tasty, had lots of toppings and cheese on it and it had a good crust on it - not too thin or burnt. Inca serves a range of pizza and pasta dishes, as well as salads and garlic bread. The food is very reasonably priced and they have a good selection of beers and wine. I went to Inca on a Thursday night and it was fairly quiet inside but it is likely to be busier at the weekends. I did find it fairly dark inside, but | think the staff wanted to create an 'ambiance', which is fine as long as you can see what you are eating!

I had some sort of fried food with nduja (a spicy sausage that I forgot how to spell) for my starter and it was incredible. Then I had a beef and onion pasta that was great but the onion was completely different to what I imagined. The place looked really nice with mutti candles and other nice decor. But the best part was the service. The workers made me feel welcome. It felt like the whole restaurant was a big family gathering. Shame that the menu changes because what I had was great and I would order it again. Will come back

Adorable little Italian restaurant with authentic flavors, fresh dishes, and friendly service!…read moreHighly rated and for good reason, we had to book a reservation in advance and you get charged for no-shows or last minute cancellations as the restaurant is very small and would lose out on a table. The menu is rotational and the one in my photos are for the summer; we ordered a side of bread that came with olive oil/balsamic vinegar and was given a complimentary cup of gazpacho. They complimented each other very well and it was so wonderfully fresh with tomato, onion, basil, and oregano. My sister ordered the seafood linguini & I got the Agnello (Scottish lamp chops with veggies & potatoes). The linguini was quite salty that made the dish a bit unbearable but my lamb chops were absolutely delicious! They were a lot smaller than I anticipated, even though there were four I left the restaurant pretty hungry which was disappointing.
