To whom it may concern,
As a long time donor and customer, I am disgusted by how your staff at the 4th Ave story in Seattle treat the down and out. On Friday, October 21, 2016, my mother and I witnessed two of your senior staffers loudly accost a young latina mother with three very young children. The customer was wearing a long winter coat, typical of the area. We witnessed her being humiliated several times by accusations of theft. She, each time, reassured the staff that it was her coat but was followed throughout the store, none the less. Her face was flushed as she approached the cash register to pay for her items.
This is blatantly inconsistent with your Christian charitable mission. Your entire stock of merchandise is totally donated by charitable souls all over the country who delegate to you the responsibility of helping those in need. This is to say that if this young woman came into the store on a very cold day without a coat and put on a donated coat she must have certainly desperately needed it and not humiliation. Your mission is not only to let the poor acquire (with or without money) clothing for the weather but to offer more if needed without having to be put through humiliating steps.
It would be proper if a person is witnessed "borrowing" an item that a staff member discreetly hand them a card with instructions on how to obtain needed items free of charge--that is called charity no strings attached. And what Jesus would do. Amen.
Humiliation is not a proper tool for charity or rehabilitation. Humiliation is contrary to charity.
