Good good--soup could have had a lot more crab--server great--pot-a-potties unpleasant but bridge and river nice

Let me start with this...the food was fantastic! All of it or at least what we had. Oysters from Lady Island, Apple arugula bleu cheese salad, and shrimp and grits from heaven. Hats off to the chef! 4 just for the kitchen. Service felt rushed for a Monday evening, probably had to do with being understaffed? Say this because folks at the table behind us left due to the lack of being serviced. Periods of time between checking on us were too long...and I don't like pesky servers. We ordered the turnip greens, they never made it to us. Our server did ask Mgr. to comp us for something which they did but by that time the mood was a little soured. We'll return for another try next time in town based on the food quality. read more

I'm visiting Beaufort for a work trip & decided to have a nice dinner with my coworkers. Our server, Kelsey, was amazing. She was so friendly & helpful. Let's talk about the food Everything that we all had was absolutely amazing. I had a glass of sangria, Caesar salad, and the blackened dorado. I love mahi, it's one of my favorite fish dishes, and this was cooked so well. Not only was it glistening and just sliding apart, it was seasoned really well. The potato cake, pickled vegetables, and beurre blanc went really well together. I forgot that I ordered the bread pudding for dessert. Absolutely delicious! I didn't want to stop eating it haha. It's been a while since I enjoyed a meal like this one! I hope to visit again when we're in town! Also, this would be a cute date night spot. We are not eating meat... so when we come to Saltus, we order the veg sushi roll and the sashimi. These are the best in beaufort for sure. You can count on the fish being fresh 90% of the time. And they know how to make cocktails, which is also uncommon in beaufort... except for Old Bull (they make good cocktails too). read more

Sat outside on the patio and bird pooped in my martini. Also on 3 other people outside were pooped in. . They need a beware sign. I know that couldn't be helped so moving onto the entrees, over priced, 3 people ordered 3 different entrees and none of us would give them more than a 3 stars. If you want bread or something as a side you have to pay separate. A steak is a steak on your plate. That's it and not worth the price for the quality. We walked in and the noise was unbelievable. Thought it was just the bar area but no, our table was just as loud. We could barely talk across the table. The ceilings are those high industrial ones with no noise absorption. I was so looking forward to the food as it gets great reviews. The waiter recommended the Mahi Dorado as their most popular dish. I love Mahi so I was in. It was the most bland entree I have had in decades. The crab/fingerling potatoes had barely any crab. Price is high and so disappointing. Not sure I'll go back. read more

Dinner with the family while visiting Beaufort South Carolina. This is one of the town's staples and has some really good comfort food that hits the spot. On our most recent visit to start, I ordered the Tuna Nachos.... I like how the dish was prepared and the tuna was great. We ordered the Sea Island Shrimp & Grits... very good but heavy. The shrimp were fresh that's for sure and good. Also had the Diver Scallops.... I thought they were ideal in size and fit for the meal. The usual cocktails were ordered and the Spicy Margarita was a nice hit for me with the heat. Located on the waterfront area, they do have some patio seating but we opted for inside with a reservation due to the warm weather. The service was just "ok" that day for us. We were trying to engage with the server about her menu options, but responses were brief & short which made us feel like our questions were more of a burden. Granted, it was a busy night so it seemed that things were moving just too fast to really make it a personal experience but that shifted of experience. Great low country style food but like others reported, the premium pricing seems to be too high based on what is served. read more

We LOVED Saltus! We ended up arriving early and sitting at the bar for about an hour. The bartenders and sushi chefs are so hospitable. We ended up talking to many of them and they made our pre dinner experience perfect! Not to mention the drinks were amazing. For dinner we had the crab bisque (some of the best we've had and we order it everywhere we go) and the tuna sashimi. It was so fresh! For entrees we did the Blackened Dorado and the Filet Mignon with truffle fries and they were both so incredible. The filet could be cut with a butter knife and the fish was so clean and bright! This restaurant was recommended by our lodging host and turned out to be an excellent choice. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but has nice contemporary decor and high ceilings inside. There is a lot of outdoor seating as well on a large patio in front which would be nice in warmer months. We had the dorado, California roll, wedge and Caesar salads and everything was delicious as well as perfectly presented. Service was attentive. The meat and fish entrees are a bit pricy - all over $40 - although the starters, salads and desserts are very reasonable. Definitely worth trying when visiting Beaufort. read more

With the place not being very crowded...the service was very slow but with that being said our waitress was incredibly nice The shrimp and grits were phenomenal The ceasar salad was really good and the croutons were a highlight (not too crunchy but nicely toasted) The sushi though...I wouldn't pay half the price to get it again The salmon sashimi was good quality but the rolls were skimpy with the fish and the chili sauce was a weird combo...my roll was supposed to have a citrus yuzu but instead it tasted like sweet and sour sauce from chick fil a was poured over it I probably wouldn't recommend this place unless someone was really jonesing for some shrimp and grits. read more

Saltus seems to always deliver. We have never had a bad meal or service. Cocktails and wine list are always great starters. The local Bird Island Oysters along with the Fried Oysters were the standout this time. First time tying their Salmon and it was cooked perfectly to order. Apparently it is "The Place to Be"! Looks like a favorite of the locals, which is always a positive sign. I opted for a lighter dinner of a dozen oysters on the half shell. Served with cocktail, mignonette and lemon. They were nice sized, slightly salty and perfect for a hot evening! Lots of dishes on the menu looked interesting, but I just didn't have room to try. Very happy that we chose Saltus River Grill for our New Year's Eve dinner. Nice ambiance, excellent food and Kelsey, who served us was just delightful and spot on, on her knowledge of the menu, specials and suggestions. Every dish from apps through dinner were tasty and beautifully plated. I like dining out where each item, main, sides, apps all make my taste buds stand up and go - Oh yeah, that's really good. The Grilled Oysters, Crab Cake, Scallop Dinner and whole Flounder were great and the sides that accompanied them were flavorful too. On our next trip to Beaufort, this will certainly be on the list of restaurants to return to. And, hopefully Kelsey will be there with her upbeat personality and fabulous timing to orchestrate our meal. read more

We arrived at 5:00 for a cocktail and told to order from the bar and then find seat outdoors. Everything was empty outdoors. As we were chatting with out cocktails, we were asked to move to a round table at the end and a couple was seated at the table we had enjoyed for 30 minutes. The exact same table was behind us; yet, we were told to move. I talked with the couple and they did not reserve or request this table. As we were leaving Alana asked if we were leaving because she wanted us to move again for another party. There were other available tables. My cousins (who were visiting from out of state) and I felt this was entirely uncalled for. SO, if you want to spend $60 on drinks for three and asked unceremoniously to move......this is the right place for you. I live in Beaufort and will NOT be back for dinner or drinks!!! read more

The ambience here was great and the service was good, but we were disappointed by the food. There were no options for a vegetarian entree so husband had to order a salad and some sides, and the salad wasn't nearly enough food. The frites weren't that good and the broccolini, the vegetable of the day, could have been cooked a little more because the stems were too hard to eat. I ordered the soup and crab cake. They were okay, would have preferred the soup to be hotter than it was. Even without ordering a drink, we spent $72 and left still hungry. Things that could have made it better - offer bread with the meal so people don't leave hungry and please offer a vegetarian entree or bigger salad option for them! read more

Saltus has always been our go to place with great food and excellent service. Something changed over the last six months. The food is steadily going down hill. On one of our last two visits I was served bad oysters (the kind you spit out). Clearly I did not finish it. When I explained to the bartender (not Chad) he didn't even acknowledge the food was bad and charged us for it. The next visit we ordered chilled shrimp cocktail (don't see it on the on line menu today). For two years the app came chilled without shell and cocktail sauce. Last month they were small shell on shrimp that looked like leftovers from a shrimp and grits dish. Again we asked why the dish was not the same as it has been for the last several years. The bartender (the same one that blue off the bad oysters) (again not Chad) informed us that this is the way they always served it. Lady's and gentleman I submit if you order the same thing visit after visit you tend to know what your previous dishes looked like. We have not been back since. The great thing about Beaufort is there are many great places to eat. I recommend Old Bull. Great food, great prices and outstanding service. read more

Not sure how this place has so many stars. I would not consider it fine dining besides the pricing. Staff is nice, but environment is very loud (even when half the restaurant was empty). Crab cake was delicious. Salmon was decent and risotto was sour. Could have more versatility on the wine menu. Outside was nice and is probably pleasant when it's warmer. Maybe I'm spoiled because of Charleston and Savannah's fine dining scene. Prices are a bit much for mediocre food. Probably wouldn't return, but not awful. read more

Haven't Yelp'd in a while and I usually don't unless it's excellent or terrible, but this place has a sushi guy named Jonathan. He is an EXPERT Sushi Chef. We have had sushi everywhere in the world we have been and he has surpassed them all! Now u have to ask but he sometimes gets shipments in that are not on the menu. We ate at several local restaurants during our 4 day visit to Beaufort and this was the best food we experienced. The ambiance of the restaurant is darker and it was still bright outside, making the contrast between the bright front area and the darker back area weird. The service was probably 3 stars, not bad, but not the level of attentiveness that this restaurant is clearly shooting for with their cuisine, plating and pricing. I started with the steak tartar. Mainly because I wanted to start with something that I probably am not going to make at home. You never know what presentation you might get on this dish, this one was more like a formed cake, think crabcake, with a raw quail egg on the half shell on top, Nice touch and made for a good presentation. Served with toast points. $14. My wife had the Diver Scallops, served with sweet pea risotto, asparagus and a "prosecco-blue crab cream sauce." The combined effect of the sauce and risotto along with the sweet scallops made this a very rich dish. It needs something to cut that richness. The scallops were larger, but only three. $46. I had the blackened dorado. This was blackened Mahi with blue crab & fingerling potato gratin, pickled fennel and leeks. The gratin was outstanding. The blackened mahi was a good portion, seasoned well and just a little bit too much butter. What! Is there such a thing? Yes, Yes there is. Which gives one the idea of the amount of butter. Very rich, somewhat offset by the pickled fennel. $42. This was clearly a restaurant trying to showcase all the local cuisine and the food was the star of the evening. Had the best meal of our trip to Beaufort, SC. Service was very attentive. Our server, who was excellent, turned out to be from our home area. We sat outside again with a great view of the bay. It's a beautiful setting under trees facing the water. Our appetizer was a southern egg roll stuffed with pulled pork and collards with a tomato purée. The bartenders were friendly and attentive. The bar was swarming with fruit flies and common flies. The sushi line cook was not practicing safe food handling. My friend was celebrating his birthday and invited a group of us to Saltus. Not being from Beaufort he insured us that Saltus is on of the best restaurants in town. After eating there I'd say he was probably right. I ordered the pork belly was which absolutely amazing. One of the BEST I've ever had. I also ordered a Long Island to drink which was unfortunately one of the WORST I've ever had. My entree was the fried chicken (I think) it was okay, I've had better though. The mashed potatoes were excellent. I tried some of my friends meal, which was the Snapper. That was *chefs kiss* Definitely a great restaurant to celebrate a anniversary, birthday, graduation, etc. I would definitely come back. You're welcome! read more

We had a good early birthday dinner at Saltus River Grill. The restaurant is overlooking the waterfront view and the outdoor seating was shaded too. Our server was very attentive in accommodating our dinner needs. We decided to order several appetizers and drinks since we had some charcuterie plate & drinks at different restaurant. We had amazing char grilled oysters to start with and it was so good to order twice. Steak tartare was topped with quail egg and we mixed it well with the tartare and it was one of the best steak tartare I had. It seasoned well and so fresh. The salmon belly portion was generous and they were so fresh! The next dish we tried was shrimp pirlau and we told our server to make it spicy and they delivered. They seasoned the rice so well with generous amount of spicy sausage, and shrimps. We'll definitely coming back for more food adventures in Beaufort. read more

Headed to Florida, we decided to stay in Beaufort, SC. Asked a person at our AirBNB for a dinner recommendation and she said Saltus was a must. Our bartenders were Shawn and Chad and they took great care of us. We decided to do an appetizer night and started with the Lowcountry Beignets and they were great. We then did the Mussels and finished with crab cake. Everything was great and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Great place on the water. read more

My husband and I made reservations here, it was meant to be our reprieve after the funeral home for our father. We were ignored after we gave up our table and opted to sit at the bar because we could ascertain they were struggling. We were absolutely shocked that Saltus raised its prices to such a stratospheric level. I don't know who is in the kitchen, but a non chef driven restaurant should never command such prices. Our shock continued when the astronomically priced dishes didn't even provide an acceptable serving size. Three ONLY three diver scallops for $46. Mind blowingly ridiculous. Shame on you. The serving size used to be five, and cost a heck of a lot less. We paid $3 for bread service which contained three itty bitty pieces of baguette. It was like eating a crouton. My dish, should have been called a coconut soup with Mussel garnish. These bivalves are so incredibly inexpensive yet I only received eight or ten. All fell out of their shells during prep, so finding the small pieces was like looking for Waldo. My meal came with the same three baguette slices that we had for our bread service. We were embarrassed as we brought a dear friend who was visiting from Houston. The six "jumbo" shrimp cocktail for $18, was not worth it. If you put Jumbo as an adjective you better deliver. In Boston, the shrimp they served us here would only fall into the large category. They were tasty but slightly overcooked. Saltus should be embarrassed for not even being able to deliver a true and excellent rendition of this classic. SC shrimp is the best. They did not respect this crustacean in its description nor its preparation. Although my husband's blackened tuna had acceptable flavor, it was not a true blackened dish. Send your staff to New Orleans so that they can better understand how to execute a dish like this. The fish also had a strange deep burgundy tint that seemed out of place. It was highly unusual as we eat tuna quite often and have never seen such a hue. Our bill ended up being as much as a chef's tasting menu at a prominent restaurant. Our server was young, inexperienced and had no enthusiasm, warmth or personality. Sad to say, we will never return. read more
