This place is awesome. I think it is the best BBQ in Baton Rouge and one of the best in Louisiana. The fact that I have let this draft sit for so long is ridiculous. I couldn't wait to be one of the first customers at this location. You see, I read an article that mentioned there was a version of this restaurant in MS near the coast. That was a huge bummer since I spent the majority of time out there and never knew it existed. But, you don't care about me, you want to know about the que! I am a Texas BBQ fanatic. If I could eat brisket every day, I would. The problem is that for many many years, no one in Louisiana understood good Texas style BBQ. That all changed when folks like Nola Smokehouse and later Gonzo's (The current champ) came arond and showed us what we were missing. Salt, Pepper, Oak (SPO) is one of the latest in the modern LA BBQ joints that does the best Texas BBQ a LA boy could hope for. Brisket - This is my primary reason for coming. It is always smoky, flavorful, and oh so briskety. If you have had real deal Texas BBQ, you know what real brisket is like. This is it. It is delicious. Everything else - Thats the thing with SPO. It is so much more than just brisket. When I am feeling a little wild, I get brisket and something else. The excellent something elses include turkey breast, wings, sausage, and those tallow fries. All are as good as the brisket. Trust me when I tell you, this place is legit. The location is in an industrial area but is well laid out, and there is plenty of seating. Wow! What a hidden gem! The breakfast menu has some great choices and I will certainly be back for lunch. Kinda pricey for breakfast, but if you order the Pitmaster or The Morning Fix, you'll probably have enough for lunch, too. Right off the bat, the tomato based creole sauce on the smoked gouda grits is a serious competitor for star of the show alongside the brisket. It is fabulous!! (I wish I knew what they seasoned it with so I could get my tomato gravy to taste that good.). About the brisket - it's as good as any you will find in the Texas Hill Country, and better than some of those. On a biscuit with a good runny egg, it just doesn't get better than that. The smoked sausage was kind of dry, not great. But everything else is really great. The potatoes are cut in larger pieces than I prefer, but they've still managed to get them good and crispy. Texas bbq in Baton Rouge? If you're from Louisiana you might like it because you don't know what Texas bbq is supposed to taste like. I had better bbq at RUDY'S! the brisket had a sweetness to it that doesn't belong on beef. Plus they charge 2.50 for a CHOICE of lean or fat who does that? The pork belly burnt ends were dried out, bark doesn't belong on pork belly only beef. The Mac and cheese was TRASH along with the fries, cut the fries 3/8 insted of 1/4" like 5 guys they'll come out better 1/4" are for McDonald's ONLY. They have their own special potato for that the fries were fried too hard they need to be thicker try 5 guys method 3/8". The ribs and sausage were average at best. read more

It's smokin' up in da house. I have tried this place a few times once for breakfast then lunch and then an early dinner. Each time it has been very busy and lunch hour is super busy and limited parking. I like this place because they are one of the few places that are nearby that you can get a baked potato loaded with your choice of meat. In my opinion their spin on a loaded potato is quite different than your typical bbq places. Theirs is not loaded with just butter, sour cream and shredded cheese they put their own spin on it. It's loaded with creamy melted cheese that has a very nice spice to it because they add a avocado chipotle cream with whipped butter (I didn't taste the butter at all) barbecue sauce (not my favorite thing) pickled onions and queso fresco which each time I have ordered it mine didn't come with it. I have gotten it topped with their brisket and I will say trust me get the fattier brisket or ask for a mix of their lean and fatty. It's good with the fattier version the juices just bring it all together. I will say next time I'm gonna order it my way I'm just not a big fan of the bbq sauce and the melted cheese. But don't get me wrong it's still a tasty potato. My husband got the two meat plate of the fattier brisket and the smoked turkey with two sides being roasted corn and the Mac n cheese. The meats in this plate were juicy and moist. My kiddo got the pork rib which was really delicious he said and his plate came with one side. Staff is really nice and helpful. Their restaurant has been expanded if you haven't den in a while. More seating and more menu options as well. Just remember that lunch hour is hectic so give them so grace they are working hard to make sure you get your order in a timely manner. read more

All the meats we've had are all hits, no misses. Especially that brisket. And today that pulled pork just was added to the list of don't skip. They are trying to find their groove so be patient. It's not their first rodeo as they relocated from Mississippi but they're adjusting to the BR location. I will never skip on going here if I need bbq and I can't wait til they expand their hours. Had to come out to Baton Rouge for this gem! This is my second time at this location and service is always fast and friendly. Atmosphere is clean and spacious and the menu was easy to read and order from. We ordered a few things to try, the hot honey chicken sandwich was fresh and seasoned well but was lacking a bit in spice for a hot honey sandwich. The cornbread was huge and really good. Soft center and butter on top was perfect. The ribs were to die for seasoned well i just wish there were a few more sauces to try from. The smash burger was my favorite item, the meat was juicy and cooked perfectly it also came with a mountain of fries. the pork belly baked potato was definitely my second favorite as the meat was juicy with plenty on top and the potato was cooked perfectly. What a great addition to the Baton Rouge BBQ scene. They're doing things right here. Slow smoked, simple rubs, and incredible flavor. I had the fatty brisket and it was a flavor bomb. It was so tender, and a good portion too. It's hidden under the ribs in the one picture I got. The ribs were great. They're fall off the bone which is what I love. They had a sweetness to them that really caught my attention. The elote is probably a top 5 side at any restaurant in BR. I showed up at 11am on the dot Friday and was the 4th person in line. I had my food by 11:10am and was back at work by 11:45. Don't be scared of a crowd, they have multiple people taking orders and there's plenty of seating. My bf and I went here because we heard great things about the BBQ here. It was quite busy when we went for lunch during the week but we were able to get a table. You order at the front and then staff will bring the food to you. I got ribs and brisket and the coleslaw and elote. To me, the seasoning on the ribs and brisket was just okay it didn't have a lot of depth or was rich. The coleslaw did not taste good and it seemed that the vegetable did not marry well with the dressing. The elote was good, and I would recommend it. I brought a couple of friends to this place because I had heard about it from a friend. Everything was impressive. We arrived during lunchtime and it was quite busy, but everything was moving along. I had the brisket with Gouda cheese grits and the flavor was fantastic. It was definitely not your run of the mill grits at all. It was tasty and just the right consistency. Damn! Baton Rouge has a legit BBQ place. We tried burnt ends, pulled pork, brisket and ribs and all were fantastic! The fire roasted elote and grits were very good, but I'm not completely sold on the chimichuri rice. The cheesecake is a must, my wife claims it's now her favorite. We are already planning our return. This is by far the best bbq we've had in Baton Rouge. Even better, the sides were given just as much attention. I really appreciate that it's not your typical barbecue. We shared a 2 meat, 2 side plate and added a link of sausage and a side of coleslaw. For the meal we had brisket (combo of lean and fatty), ribs, cornbread and their beans. The only thing that I think could have been a little better for me was the beans. They weren't bad at all, but just a little under-seasoned compared to the rest of the food. I haven't had brisket that good in quite a while. The sausage had a great smoke flavor. The ribs were my favorite. It had the most flavorful rub and fell right off the bone. The slaw, we were told, was maple syrup and creole-mustard based and I would get that every time. I loved the homemade pickles and pickled onion. The bbq sauces were also good--of the two I preferred the mustard-based sauce but they were both delicious. I did not try the cornbread by my husband did not have any complaints. I am eyeing the brisket Birria tacos and a smoked margarita for my next trip! As far as the restaurant goes, you order at the counter. It was clean and inviting and the cheesecakes and cookies on display looked delectable. The service was also top notch. I ended up having some car trouble after I ordered and that extended my pick up time to a little over an hour and when I did pick it up, it was still hot. I had the two meat plate that I ordered ribs, mac & cheese, and the elote. Man when I tell you, the ribs were so flavorful and seasoned to perfection. They were also tender I mean just the right amount. The mac & cheese was creamy and good. The elote I thought was going to be spicy, but I'm glad it wasn't and it was good as well.
