I think it was OK barbecue but great portion sizes and clean restaurant! I ordered the turkey slices with a side of fries and the Mac n cheese. My friend got the sausage and brisket with Mac n cheese and rice. I though my turkey was cold, but I really liked the flavor. Also, the Mac n cheese was cold to me, and I didn't love the flavor. The best thing I had on my plate was the fries! They were so so good! I loved what my friend got...I should have gotten the sausage and brisket because that was perfection. The sizes of the meats were very large. I didn't love this restaurant set up. They don't serve beer and they don't have Diet Coke for the fountain drink. I would pick up to go next time! read more

This place is awesome. I think it is the best BBQ in Baton Rouge and one of the best in Louisiana. The fact that I have let this draft sit for so long is ridiculous. I couldn't wait to be one of the first customers at this location. You see, I read an article that mentioned there was a version of this restaurant in MS near the coast. That was a huge bummer since I spent the majority of time out there and never knew it existed. But, you don't care about me, you want to know about the que! I am a Texas BBQ fanatic. If I could eat brisket every day, I would. The problem is that for many many years, no one in Louisiana understood good Texas style BBQ. That all changed when folks like Nola Smokehouse and later Gonzo's (The current champ) came arond and showed us what we were missing. Salt, Pepper, Oak (SPO) is one of the latest in the modern LA BBQ joints that does the best Texas BBQ a LA boy could hope for. Brisket - This is my primary reason for coming. It is always smoky, flavorful, and oh so briskety. If you have had real deal Texas BBQ, you know what real brisket is like. This is it. It is delicious. Everything else - Thats the thing with SPO. It is so much more than just brisket. When I am feeling a little wild, I get brisket and something else. The excellent something elses include turkey breast, wings, sausage, and those tallow fries. All are as good as the brisket. Trust me when I tell you, this place is legit. The location is in an industrial area but is well laid out, and there is plenty of seating. Pay with a card in the line, make your drink, grab utensils, and grab a seat. They bring your food to you. The whole process is super easy and you will love it. PS. Their mustard based sauce is the best I have ever had. Send me the recipe if anyone has it. Please! read more

Wow! What a hidden gem! The breakfast menu has some great choices and I will certainly be back for lunch. Kinda pricey for breakfast, but if you order the Pitmaster or The Morning Fix, you'll probably have enough for lunch, too. Right off the bat, the tomato based creole sauce on the smoked gouda grits is a serious competitor for star of the show alongside the brisket. It is fabulous!! (I wish I knew what they seasoned it with so I could get my tomato gravy to taste that good.). About the brisket - it's as good as any you will find in the Texas Hill Country, and better than some of those. On a biscuit with a good runny egg, it just doesn't get better than that. The smoked sausage was kind of dry, not great. But everything else is really great. The potatoes are cut in larger pieces than I prefer, but they've still managed to get them good and crispy. If the breakfast is any indication, then the rest of the menu must be great! read more

A limited menu but great selections. Friendly people and a good location for me. Clean surroundings. You order the food and pay in advance but they do bring you your order to your table. Service was quick. Close at 3 pm on Sundays. Nice experience for all. I shall return. read more

The food was good and service Ok. It was a Saturday morning and we did breakfast there. Order took awhile for being the only people in the restaurant. Once, they realized we had not got our food they brought it to us. Mine was cold. The only thing that saved this from being 2 was the slices of brisket I think the owner brought to our table. The biscuit and gravy was good and so was the brisket. I hope it would be top notch had the breakfast items been just cooked and hot. I will try them again. Clean restaurant and restroom. I feel on the weekend they must done a lot of take out and catering orders. read more

Grab your keys so you can already be on your way by the time you finish reading this. BR has a new bbq spot to join the scene and as they continue to grow, I think this place is gonna be in the top ranks. I went on opening day and then day 6 of operation, same dang good bbq as before. All the meats we've had are all hits, no misses. Especially that brisket. And today that pulled pork just was added to the list of don't skip. They are trying to find their groove so be patient. It's not their first rodeo as they relocated from Mississippi but they're adjusting to the BR location. I will never skip on going here if I need bbq and I can't wait til they expand their hours. Also they show their TikTok live if you wanna see the action. My only critique is that as the staff grows I hope they keep the service friendly. Today's visit I had one dismissive employee but I'll suck it up to it's been a long day. read more

The service is great! I ordered the 2 meats & 2 sides combo. I enjoyed my ribs, they were tender and seasoned well. The sausage was a bit overcooked/dry. The Mac n cheese is delicious, but the coleslaw could've been a bit sweeter (in my opinion). The interior was nice and welcoming with plenty of places to sit. Overall, I think this is a decent barbecue place. read more

Arguably one of the best barbecue places anywhere. You almost don't need the sauce, but when you add it it makes the food twice as good. It's almost a blessing that I don't live around the corner because I'd be there for 3 meals a day. read more

Had to come out to Baton Rouge for this gem! This is my second time at this location and service is always fast and friendly. Atmosphere is clean and spacious and the menu was easy to read and order from. We ordered a few things to try, the hot honey chicken sandwich was fresh and seasoned well but was lacking a bit in spice for a hot honey sandwich. The cornbread was huge and really good. Soft center and butter on top was perfect. The ribs were to die for seasoned well i just wish there were a few more sauces to try from. The smash burger was my favorite item, the meat was juicy and cooked perfectly it also came with a mountain of fries. the pork belly baked potato was definitely my second favorite as the meat was juicy with plenty on top and the potato was cooked perfectly. Portions a big here so definitely come hungry or with friends to share read more

What a great addition to the Baton Rouge BBQ scene. They're doing things right here. Slow smoked, simple rubs, and incredible flavor. I had the fatty brisket and it was a flavor bomb. It was so tender, and a good portion too. It's hidden under the ribs in the one picture I got. The ribs were great. They're fall off the bone which is what I love. They had a sweetness to them that really caught my attention. The elote is probably a top 5 side at any restaurant in BR. I showed up at 11am on the dot Friday and was the 4th person in line. I had my food by 11:10am and was back at work by 11:45. Don't be scared of a crowd, they have multiple people taking orders and there's plenty of seating. I can't wait to go back and try more. read more

Salt Pepper Oak 6721 Exchequer Dr, Baton Rouge, LA 70809 Look no further! We have a new BBQ joint near the Industrial Plex/Siegan Lane and it's @salt.pepper.oak I came here with my coworker and it was packed, but worth the wait. I ordered the Two Meat/Two Sides (brisket & pork spare ribs) & (cole slaw & fire roasted elote) with a side of cheesecake (heavenly indeed). My coworker ordered the half-smoked chicken with beef tallow fries (favorite). What stood out to me was the Pork spare ribs, fire-roasted elote, and cheesecake. I intend to come back here to try everything off their menu. #tonylameats #saltpepperoak #batonrougela #bbq #foodislife #foodismedicine read more

My bf and I went here because we heard great things about the BBQ here. It was quite busy when we went for lunch during the week but we were able to get a table. You order at the front and then staff will bring the food to you. I got ribs and brisket and the coleslaw and elote. To me, the seasoning on the ribs and brisket was just okay it didn't have a lot of depth or was rich. The coleslaw did not taste good and it seemed that the vegetable did not marry well with the dressing. The elote was good, and I would recommend it. The prices for the quality and amount of food did not match and I felt like it was overpriced. While I wanted to love this, I don't see myself going back here again. read more

We've been twice and everything that I've had here is amazing. I appreciate the vinegary sauce.

Delicious barbecue in Baton Rouge. The brisket is awesome and so are the burnt ends. Sides are great as well!!

It's smokin' up in da house. I have tried this place a few times once for breakfast then lunch and then an early dinner. Each time it has been very busy and lunch hour is super busy and limited parking. I like this place because they are one of the few places that are nearby that you can get a baked potato loaded with your choice of meat. In my opinion their spin on a loaded potato is quite different than your typical bbq places. Theirs is not loaded with just butter, sour cream and shredded cheese they put their own spin on it. It's loaded with creamy melted cheese that has a very nice spice to it because they add a avocado chipotle cream with whipped butter (I didn't taste the butter at all) barbecue sauce (not my favorite thing) pickled onions and queso fresco which each time I have ordered it mine didn't come with it. I have gotten it topped with their brisket and I will say trust me get the fattier brisket or ask for a mix of their lean and fatty. It's good with the fattier version the juices just bring it all together. I will say next time I'm gonna order it my way I'm just not a big fan of the bbq sauce and the melted cheese. But don't get me wrong it's still a tasty potato. My husband got the two meat plate of the fattier brisket and the smoked turkey with two sides being roasted corn and the Mac n cheese. The meats in this plate were juicy and moist. My kiddo got the pork rib which was really delicious he said and his plate came with one side. Staff is really nice and helpful. Their restaurant has been expanded if you haven't den in a while. More seating and more menu options as well. Just remember that lunch hour is hectic so give them so grace they are working hard to make sure you get your order in a timely manner. read more

Food is excellent. Service is impeccable. Ambiance average. It's more of a working person's restaurant. But the food is fantastic.

Texas bbq in Baton Rouge? If you're from Louisiana you might like it because you don't know what Texas bbq is supposed to taste like. I had better bbq at RUDY'S! the brisket had a sweetness to it that doesn't belong on beef. Plus they charge 2.50 for a CHOICE of lean or fat who does that? The pork belly burnt ends were dried out, bark doesn't belong on pork belly only beef. The Mac and cheese was TRASH along with the fries, cut the fries 3/8 insted of 1/4" like 5 guys they'll come out better 1/4" are for McDonald's ONLY. They have their own special potato for that the fries were fried too hard they need to be thicker try 5 guys method 3/8". The ribs and sausage were average at best. read more

I brought a couple of friends to this place because I had heard about it from a friend. Everything was impressive. We arrived during lunchtime and it was quite busy, but everything was moving along. I had the brisket with Gouda cheese grits and the flavor was fantastic. It was definitely not your run of the mill grits at all. It was tasty and just the right consistency. The brisket was tender and flavored just right. I tasted my friend's ribs. They were tender and delicious. I found the service especially friendly and welcoming. We were asked several times about our satisfaction with our meals. I highly recommend Salt Pepper Oak to anyone We will definitely be back ! read more

The BBQ is decent being in Baton Rouge. However, the speed of service is very disappointing. I have been here 4-5 times since it has been open and have had a problem with EVERY single visit. Missing food, long wait times, and 2 of the visits - the completely lost my order. It's been a few months since they opened and I figured they would have their service figured out by now but I guess not. Do not go if you don't plan to wait 30-45 mins for BBQ that's suppose to already be cooked. read more

Service: 5/5 Food: 5/5 Ambiance: 4.5/5 Service: It's day 2 of this place and they were very busy and crushing it!! Be patient with them and give yourself time, the staff is doing a great job turning food over in the kitchen. Very friendly staff, the energy and vibe of this place is great. Owner is very present and serving food to the tables. They are limited on the days open and hours are 11am-5pm I believe Thurs, Fri, & Sat to get started. Food: Not sure where to start....flavor profiles are amazing! This is not your standard backyard smoked brisket, pulled pork and ribs, this place is set apart! I went with my wife and one of my sons. We ordered the 2 of the 2 meat w/2 sides combo and we got brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, & pork belly burnt ends. I lived in Texas for a decade and love the bbq there and Texas brisket is top notch. SPO brisket is ridiculous and amazing, right amount of smokiness with a perfect rub to give it great flavor. The pulled pork was excellent too. If you want to be daring, get the pork belly burnt ends...life changing!! The pork belly burnt ends is like a fireworks of flavor! I didn't try the pork ribs, but my son sure did enjoy them. He said the meat had good flavor and they were fall off the bone tender. The four sides we had was the slaw, beans, street corn & mac n cheese. Beans are savory and not sweet great flavors for a side. Nice change of your standard sweet baked beans. The street corn was excellent and probably my favorite, mac n cheese was great too and the slaw was good, needed a little more salt, but tasted good and had a nice crunch to it. I can't say enough about this place and the flavors of all the meats I tried were excellent!!! The portions are perfect, your not going to be overserved but you will be satisfied with the portions with amazing flavor profiles! In conclusion of the food, I think BBQ is my love language and this spot is my new go to for BBQ. Ambiance: Really cool vibe inside and they put some nice work into the aesthetics with a lot of wood. Great energy from the entire staff, you can tell they enjoy working there even with the crazy business on day 2. read more
