Had dinner here many times . The food is always GREAT . Took a customer and spouse there . They ordered steak and I was STUNNED how good it was . Almost every time I have gone I have ordered fish , tuna etc. and I have never been disappointed. The service has always been great. The staff is knowledgable and consistent. My life has been spent traveling on business , and I have some favorite restaurants with a few great dishes , but none that seems to be great up and down the menu . When I'm in the Valley , it's not uncommon fir ms to go to this establishment several nights in a row . Even the manager always checks in with customers . This is a great place for business dinners , dare night or just by yourself. It's also fun to eat at the bar watching the kitchen operate ! read more

Today was the best experience restaurant wise in a while nice beautiful place with nice staff and environment

As a flight attendant I get to explore lots of new places and I've been to McAllen a few times but always eat at the food trucks. Well, my crew and I decided to try SALT for the first time and boy, we were not disappointed! They have a great menu, the ambiance is fantastic, their staff were friendly and attentive. We tried a few things and loved each bite of it. We even ordered dessert (something I rarely do). Do yourself a favor whether you're from McAllen or just visiting and go try their food. You will be glad you did. read more

I visited this place last June for my friends bday and we sat kitchen bar area. Loved watching them prep/cook all the food. Great experience. Our server (lady in the pix) was awesome! So awesome I left her a nice tip and bought drinks for all the kitchen staff! Unfortunately, it's been a minute so I can't recall her name but she gave top notch service! The food is better than any restaurant I've tried in McAllen. I would return to this restaurant if/when I find myself in McAllen again! read more

Salt - This girl ... BEST SERVER ever!!!! - New American Near Me - McAllen, Texas

For starters, the food is excellent. I'm simply giving three stars because I called a couple weeks back in an attempt to purchase a gift certificate for friends of mine that lived in the area of this restaurant and I couldn't find anywhere online to do that. The gentleman that answered the phone told me that he wasn't exactly sure how to do it and asked for my name and number and he would have someone call me back. Needless to say, that was a couple of weeks ago. No call back and the purpose of the gift certificate (anniversary) has come and gone. read more

Very pricey, food was delicious. They need a better AC or expand and move people further from kitchen we were sweating the whole time.

Food is excellent! Wonderful fried chicken! Service is great. Macaroni Cheese is great. It's really good.

The food was outstanding. The pear salad had well balanced flavors and left me wishing I had ordered the larger portion. The duck breast had a crispy skin and tender inside just how it should be; the flavors were spot on. read more

The pasta, steak, rabbit and ice cream were all delicious. Wonder atmosphere, service, and hospitality. We recommendEd friends and family.

Excellent. I had the filet, and it was perfect. Apolo was my server, and he was exceptional. I sat near the kitchen, so I had a chance to chat with other staff members - and I'm so glad I did because I would have missed the churro ice cream sandwich. It was divine, as were the cocktails they recommended. Relaxed, yet classy vibe. My new favorite place! read more

Really good food, drinks, ambience and drinks. Been there multiple times, always consistently good.

I thought Salt was absolutely delectable. It's decor is super inviting and the food is even better. I swung by on a Wednesday night and immediately got seated at the bar - which by the way, may be the best seat in the house because I got to watch the kitchen and talk amongst some foodies! I ended up getting the duck. I believe it was sous vide and then gently fried - the skin was crispy and the meat juicy and tender. There was a berry reduction on the duck which lightened up the dish. I'm heading back in a couple of weeks for work and I've decided I'll be there again. It's not a one and done kind-of place! read more

Had been willing to go to salt for a long time and finally caved in. Wife had the scallops and I had the crispy pork shank. The pork itself was delicious.! Enormous amount of food! The cowboy biscuits that came with it were wonky! A really bad combination I felt. They so heavy and overfilling. Felt like eating an MRI. (military members would understand that.) drinks were good and Service was excellent. They seem to have a very diverse interesting menu. The restaurant itself was a little crowded for me. Tables were too close to each other and very hectic in the restaurant. Not really a place would recommend for an intimate dinner. read more

I had high hopes for this restaurant based on the reviews online and a friend's personal recommendation. Unfortunately when I had dinner here it didn't go well at all. We went for my brother bday, when I made my reservation they asked me for his name and printed it on the menus which I thought was a great sign of things to come. Unfortunately that was one of the only positive things that evening. When we sat down the server spilled the water they were serving on the menu which is a sheet of like construction paper, so now I could use or read the menu. When he spilled the water he just walked away, no cleaning it up, or changing out the menu until I asked someone to do it. We move on and ordered drinks, that were so strong I couldn't drink it, but figure I just didn't like it and didn't drink it and didn't complain. We ordered food, and when the food came it looked and smelled very good. We ordered steak, Mine was supposed to be medium, my dad's medium well. Mine came out almost raw, and my dads was so over cooked and tough it was even hard to cut through. My dad's not a complainer so he powered through and ate it. I also ordered a side on the Mac and cheese, which did have a good taste, but the noodles were raw, so there was a literal crunch to the noodles. I called the server over to send it back, and he did offer to remake it, but we had waited quite a bit and I really was annoyed so I said no thanks. I then decided I would eat some of my daughter's chicken she ordered and said she was done. The chicken was so dry I literally had to drink water just to swallow it. They offered us free dessert which I declined because I didn't want to try anything else. 2 out of the 6 people said their food was fine, the other 4 had deficiencies with parts of their meal. They did take off my steak from the bill, but it left a bad taste that they didn't take off the Mac and cheese because I only took one bite. Overall the location is cool, and others seemed to be having a good time, but I won't go back at all to SALT. This was my experience, hopefully others have a better experience than my family and I. read more

Great atmosphere, food, & service. Went after being highly recommended and wasn't dissappointed!

Food was fine. Whiskey was great. Service was as expected. Ambiance is okay. Would recommend but don't know if I would go again.

Amazing. The waiter worked with my mother to adjust her dish to accommodate her serious allergies. He was patient and knowledgeable. We each ordered the filet and it was sensational. Our dessert was the Alaska and it surprised us with how delicious and intriguing it was!! Can't wait to go back. 10/10. read more

Blondies and Black and Blue all night. Delicious food, good service. All you need is good company and you'll have a great time.

I can't give 5 stars for charity, has to be something to strive for. Wish there was a 4.5 star. Look, this place is world class. Read what I said. WORLD CLASS. This place would be successful in LA, in NY, in London in Mexico City, you get the point. We'll documented owner and chef, great ambiance and great drinks. Top 5 place in valley, easy. Anyone who says this isn't worth your time or money, don't believe them. They have never left Texas. Side note: you know a good place by the service. The second you walk in, you're greeted. The second you sit down, you're greeted. This level of service, is calculated and unmatched. Adds to experience. Top notch read more

Mac and cheese and pork chop were on point but had no idea how good the cowboy bread with spicy honey would be.

Phenomenal restaurant and within walking distance of my hotel. Top rated in McAllen and for a reason. The attention and service started before I reached the front door and only continued throughout my flavor journey. Local produce and home made salts/seasonings on each table. -excellent Started with sriracha shrimp which had a strong sriracha smell at first but the flavor was perfect accompanied with the sauce and the temperature was spot on. Fish tacos for main entree and I see why it is a restaurant favorite. Finished off with creme brûlée which was the fire on top. Highly recommend, a bit pricey but worth it. read more

I wanted to share our experience at Salt. my husband found your restaurant on line and made reservations because of the variety of options on the menu. The staff was amazing. helpful, cheerful and well informed. we were celebrating my birthday and Angie our wait staff printed out a take home menu with my name in it. A sweet keep sake. How thoughtful. The drinks and starters were amazing. The pork belly with berry reduction was exquisite. Angie was attentive and knowledgeable about each item on the menu. Everything was amazing. The plating was beautiful and the timing was perfect. I had the duck and my husband the crispy pork shank. and we ended with a nightcap and dessert. I will remember the entire staff and how wonderful they treated us. The kitchen staff is a well oiled machine. sending out incredibly good. I can't say enough about how special they made us feel. BTW we travels from Corpus Christi to have this meal and it was so worth it. CHEERS to a great team. Thank you so much. read more

Fantastic place. Love it here and have been multiple times. Great place to go with a party or on a date night. Cool place to sit is at the chef's table which surrounds the kitchen. You get to see all of the dishes being made and one time they even offered us samples (they made extra because they liked all of us and our vibe. I'm a super cheap date, as my favorite dish is their fried chicken dish which I believe is the least expensive menu item. I'm from the South (mainly Georgia), so I'm kind of a fried chicken snob. I was blown away by their chicken. And the serving size is huge. They also had a pork chop dish which looked like something made for a small army: is massive. That was being ordered a lot. Their cocktails are also really good, and they're cool enough to let you order your own drink if you know what you like. The bar is well stocked with most everything. Nice wine list, too. Treat yourself and just go here! read more

The service at Salt is like no other restaurant I've been to in the valley . The servers and bartenders really take their time talking to you and giving you recommendations on drinks and food you should get. The only reason I found out about their beef empanadas was because our bartender said that they were his personal favorite off the menu item. Overall all it's always an amazing experience going to eat here. read more

Food was local grown and flavors were excellent. Service was superb. We truly enjoyed ourselves. We will return.

Salt is a great for McAllen. Need more like this. Looks like it opened early 2014 appears to be doing well. It was full on a Thursday evening but I managed to squeeze in with a single seat at the kitchen counter. It was a great of a busy gourmet kitchen creating some fantastic meals. I had the rabbit and was very happy with it. Meat was tender and juicy and the sauce was great with it. The ricotta gnochi complimented it well. If you have not tried it, it is said to taste like chicken, but it reminded me more of mild dark roasted turkey. I had not had rabbit since I was a child so I had forgotten how it tastes. I was thinking it might be stronger or gamey so I was surprised when I tasted its delicate flavors. For this reason, I would not choose a red wine next time. The server recommended a red I chose a Merlot. But it was too big for the delicate flavors. This calls for a full bodied white, a rose, or a light pinot noir. The menu here is too good to ruin with a bad wine pairing, I wish they had an inhouse Somm or list Somm suggested wine pairings on the menu. The Salt chips with gorgonzola cream were served complimentary before the meal. Nice surprise because the menu shows them for $9.00. Tip: They go surprisingly well with a glass of the Gruner Veltliner. Highly recommend and I can't wait to return! read more

Positive: the service was great. Our waiter was very attentive. The quail appetizer was great. The palomas were good. Negative: the lavender drink and the black and blue were way too sweet I could not enjoy them. The shrimp appetizer was blah. The catch on the day on the day I went was cooked extremely salty! So salty it was terrible. I can't believe it was this bad. The main reason I gave it a three was the atmosphere The food was a 2 read more

Building - 5 Parking - 3 Friendliness - 5 Plating - 4 Food - 4 Pricing - On Par SALT: My server said the name of restaurant was chosen because there is salt on everyone's table and everyone's kitchen, and binds us together. Additionally, Salt has provide 5 or more different types of salts to choose from... kinda fun and cool. The building is a quaint, not-too-big, stand-alone (with some patio seating), but a small parking lot. However, there was convenient off-street parking. I was greeted very warmly, and sat at the Kitchen Table (really a counter top). As a Party of 1, it's nice to be able to see the goings-on and dynamics of the Employees. You can get a true sense of how well the restaurant works which typically translates to quality plates... and they worked very well with each other. My general philosophy for dining is to order what I don't make at home. With that in mind, I started with the SweetBreads. I may have been vacillating on that decision, until I saw the lovely mushrooms that accompany it. I only wish that there had been just a few more... only because I love them. The bacon-wrapped sweetbreads were very good. But beware, wrapping food in bacon is risky. As you may overpower the item you are really featuring. I think that may be a little true here. I felt the sweetbreads ended up being mostly just a texture. However, I had NO problem finishing the entire plate! Entree: Being the day after Easter, I had to have the Rabbit! It was good, and I'm glad I got it. But I can't help feeling that all the Duck plates that I saw prepared, that duck (one of my favorites) might have been tastier. Bottom line, I will go back. Last note, I didn't see and mints on my way out. That would be a nice add. Thanks for an enjoyable evening. read more

Well, I come here on business to McAllen once a year sometimes twice and I have consistently made this my go to place for dinner, but tonight's experience may bring that practiceto an end. It was unusually busy for a Tuesday and that was evident when I walked in at 9 PM for dinner and sat at the chefs table, and while the original waiter was pleasant and attentive it was soon thereafter when he passed me on to another waiter, who was essentially MIA for the rest of the meal. As I finished my dinner, I sat for 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged me, and I had to go so far as to tell the hostess when she walked by that I was finished and ready to wrap things up. It was quite clear as I watched the staff scramble to clean up after an unexpectedly busy night while failing to acknowledge me. I'm low maintenance but the last guest should always feel like they were treated the same as the first guest of the evening and tonight's experience well short of that and for that I'm disappointed and will have to reconsider any return. read more

Salt is definitely one of the nicer restaurants in town. The atmosphere is sophisticated, but casual and bright. They have bar seating that can serve kitchen orders. You usually need to make a reservation in advance. I tried the scallop, the duck, and the charcuterie. They were fine. Drinks are fine too, but as with most drinks in McAllen, too sweet. Not balanced. read more

Had my Birthday celebration at Salt tonight. Absolutely perfect. We sat at the Chef's table and it was a treat. The 4 Chefs were great. They worked in harmony and seemed happy while doing so. Answered all questions and were very pleasant. Early on, ian, the Manager came over and said Hello. Really cool since I have never been there before ! Greatly appreciated. Our server, Brianna, was wonderful. Just a perfect 10 in many ways. Everything we needed she brought to us perfectly timed. If I didn't live 80 miles away, I would go see her weekly ! Food was Perfection. Many Apps, 2 Entrees and 3 Desserts all prepared as delicious as possible. Cheers. Highly recommended . Joe, S Padre Island. read more
