I don't eat out in McAllen all that often. There are a few restaurants that have a dish or two I really like and will go out for, but for the most part, I cook better than most restaurant fare. That said, I came here with high expectations. It's a nice place, with a very friendly staff, and better than average food/drinks for McAllen. However, it has a ways to go in the area of food/service to value, to rate five stars. (I recently spent a week in NY and had excellent food/value/service nearly every meal, and several meals were truly memorable, so my review is probably scewed by that as well.)
Our party of nine started off with the cheese/meat board which was ok (I like the cheese/meat board at their sister restaurant, HouseWine, better). Everyone liked their cocktails. We ordered a variety and all were "very good". We then ordered each of the salads, and of those, the Heirloom tomato and the Burrata were "good". Their presentation was lovely. The others were just "ok". Next, we ordered a variety of entrees. The fried chicken and mashed potatoes were "good". The flank steak with squid pasta was "ok". The pork shank was "very good". The scallops were over-cooked, but not too bad, so it rated "ok". The swordfish was "very good". (They stressed the fact that this fish was "very fresh"; caught Tuesday and in their kitchen on Friday afternoon. To me, if it was caught in the morning and on the table that night, that's "very fresh"). The highly touted mac and cheese was "ok" (the smoked gouda was overpowering and the taste lingered for hours afterward and not in a good way). As for presentation, the swordfish won hands down. It was by far the prettiest plate. The flank steak with squid pasta was downright ugly. The service was attentive for the most part, but bringing out entrees up to 10 minutes apart was really unacceptable. Those who received their orders first tried to wait until everyone was served, but their food was getting cold waiting for the other orders to arrive. This is an area that should be addressed by the restaurant staff immediately.
No one felt like ordering dessert (although they looked pretty), so we skipped that. Paying for the meal was a pleasant surprise. They offered to do one or individual checks, which was nice. That part of the evening went very smoothly and all checks were taken care of at the same time. Overall, this is a nice restaurant with a good staff and decent food. I appreciate their concept, but there wasn't a dish memorable enough for me to add it to a very short list of restaurants to re-visit. Although I'm not inclined to go back for dinner, I might go back for the cocktails, or try dinner at the chef's table. That looked interesting enough to pique my curiousity. read more
