The Mayfair Chippy - My to go order was so tasty. Fries could have been crisper but the fish was on point!

Mayfair Chippy absolutely lived up to the hype. The fish was fresh, flaky, and wrapped in a…read moreperfectly crisp batter that stayed light instead of greasy. The chips were thick-cut, properly salted, and tasted like real chip shop fries instead of frozen fast food fries. The place was completely packed, so I ended up eating on the stairs about a block away, honestly felt like part of the experience. One of those spots that doesn't try to reinvent fish and chips. it just does the classic version better than most places. Would easily go back next time I am in London.

(I heard the non GF version was also excellent.) Platter came with flavorful mushy peas, tartar sauce, and a spicy mayo (or currry for the non GF platter). Chips were large and delicious. Portion was huge, and easily shareable. Delicious!! Service: It was ok. We waited in line for a really long time (more than an hour) but we were checked on from time to time. Once we were seated and ordered, no one really checked in, but we asked if we needed something. Ambiance: Cute outdoor seating. In door seating was okay. Reservations get to go into a back room which seemed nicer. Lovely side street in a crazy busy popular area. It's a solid 4.5 stars for what it is because the food was so good. I'd return. Tip: Make a reservation a couple of weeks in advance, or be prepared to wait...a long time...Or, skip the line to order takeaway and go enjoy your food!

My (drunk) friend told me, after seeing my 4 star Yelp review of another Fish & Chip shop…read more(http://bit.ly/cucAOo), that I should check out the chipy in St. Margarets... So with all the hype about it I simply had to go and try it our for myself. Oh dear god was I disappointed! It was rank, with soggy chips that stuck to the paper and batter that had more resemblance to wallpaper paste than anything else! Man I really hate giving businesses bad reviews, especially when there's no existing Yelp reviews to fight their corner but jees it was rough. Sorry! Not going again!

Over the last few years I have made a bee line for this fish and chip shop, still run by the same owners. Noted for fresh and individually cooked succulent fish... thick, chunky and well-steamed inside thin crisp batter... with chips to match, this had been an oasis in the world of fried fish, where you can eat in as well as take away. The other day I had a sit-in large haddock and chips with mushy peas for £7.40p, a price I didn't mind paying due to previous experience. However, this time the 'not large' fish was thin and stale; the chips had that tainted taste of being left to hang around too long . The mushy peas were in a pre-prepared tiny polystyrene pot, then microwaved. Lashings of salt and vinegar couldn't improve the taste. I am hoping that this was just an abberation but, sadly, I suspect not. If I am passing the area I might try it again, but more likely will give it a miss. It is interesting that it can take only one bad meal to ruin an outlet's reputation for a customer, despite previous patronage through positive experience. It shows that you are only as good as your last offering.
