Few places have your heart like your local bodega, and Greenland Gourmet, my dear reader, is mine…read more The middle eastern cashier has seen my highest of highs, lowest of lows, and every stop in between. He has been there for me celebrating a new job as I picked up Martinelli's Apple juice to pair with my handle of Hennessy. He's asked if I'm feeling any better after my 3rd consecutive day of getting a liter of Essential water, a Gatorade Zero, and advil to fend off whatever flu bug I had. He's seen me jump from snack phase to snack phase: I've gone from White Cheddar Pop Corners to Nacho Hippea's Chickpea Puffs to Larry and Lenny's White Chocolate Macadamia cookies, and currently just back on classic goldfish. "No Pop Corners today!?" He laughs every time I order my CLASSIC chicken over rice with just chicken rice and onions. "No Salad? No tomatoes? No Sauce? No Nothin?" You know me big dawg! $9.06 is a cheat code. He's seen me stumble in here loaded after a long night at Ding-a-Ling, needing something in my stomach before I go to sleep but being completely overwhelmed at a menu that literally has everything from quesadillas to acai bowls. The only constant in life is change. Time passes, people move, and like a river's flow, it never ends. It's important to have a few pillars of consistency, for someone to truly see you. I'd argue that your local bodega is one of these pillars. One day when I eventually leave the city, I will miss it dearly, so I'm doing my best to appreciate these moments as I'm in them. I was in New York for a work conference, and the hotel only offered a continental breakfast…read more Yeah... that wasn't going to cut it, I needed something hot. I spotted this deli and decided to give it a try. It's set up like a little store, with a counter in the back where they make hot sandwiches. I liked it so much, I ended up going three mornings in a row. Day 1: Ordered the Philly cheesesteak and loved it. Day 2: Brought my coworker along. I had a breakfast sandwich with eggs, beef sausage, and cheese. The sausage was a bit too salty for me, but my coworker enjoyed his. Day 3: Went right back to my trusty Philly, and as expected, it was bomb. My coworker couldn't stop saying, "This is delicious." The cook was friendly, the cashier was friendly. Honestly, I didn't expect that level of warmth in New York (it's NEW YORK! ). The place seems pretty popular too. People were in and out, and I even heard the cook ask someone, "Your usual?" Definitely a spot locals love.

This week I tried the strawberry shortcake and white meringue cake. The strawberry topper was a little old but the rest of the cake was moist and fresh. This cake is way better than those offered by other large chain grocery stores. Very dependable. Love the elegant box and delicate orange ribbon - very nice touch.

They offer a lot of variety overall - You can choose from several food and drink offerings available on the main floor, then pay for them at the register where they make the coffee drinks. They have lots of coolers with most any beverage type or brand one could want, along with snacks, chips, candies, hot food by the pound, a cafe and a cook to order griddle where they offer at least some breakfast foods all day. I had a ham and cheese omelette which came with buttered toast (it was also to include breakfast potatoes but they were out), along with a bottle of orange juice and a bottle of water and it came to about $21 including tax and gratuity. They had plenty of tables for patrons to sit and eat, but my primary critical comment would be the lighting. It was really bright and they were using "cool white" lighting - the kind with the blue hue that makes everyone look like a cadaver. Definitely not the best choice for a restaurant.

Staff seems you are bothering them when you are giving them business. Not very nice at all…read more For mealpal one usually just scan a code and the food is given to you. Today I was told to get online at the other counter with the regular customers. When I reached the cashier I was shown the MealPal QR code. Then the women seemed to go get my food from the shelf but just disappeared. No explanation. No communication. The two other ladies at the registers also have no communication. I was invisible. I stood there 5-10 minutes before someone brought my food from the back. It would be professional to share with your customer what is going on. I would appreciate it being told my food will be coming from the back and they'll be a few minutes late. Just that simple action would put the customer at ease. Service I get here is worse than I get in Chinatown from grumpy old men. You can always tell if the employees are happy or not. And they always take it out on the consumers.
