This place is close by my office and I was in a pinch so decided to pick up a quick bite. They have a lot of different types of food to choose from between fried chicken, pizza, burgers, Mexican and even Indian food. The prices were good and they had some cool combos too. I overcame my indecisiveness and landed on a chicken burrito. Big mistake because this might be a contender for worst burrito I've ever had. Literally was just chicken, rice and beans. Super dry, no flavor, not even cheese?? Lettuce? Luckily they gave me green sauce on the side which added a smidge of flavor but definitely not enough. They didn't wrap it in foil so it fell apart immediately and I think they used chicken they put inside was half inedible cartilage and bones. Maybe their other menu items are better but definitely stay away from the burrito - there are better spots for that nearby. read more

TBH, this place is hit or miss. Bf tried to convince me for a long time that their steak dinner slaps. I was skeptical because who offers steak dinners with a salad, potato, AND a soda for under $30??!?? HOW good could this steak possibly be!?!? Well, we get to the spot and it's like a deli. Reminds me of a soup kitchen. You line up and you order. We went at night and the guy cooking our steak pounded it out before grilling it. Ok, it was actually not bad. Ut was a little fatty, but it was tender enough and actually quite hearty and filling. The baked potato is really good. The salad is not, but it's not like you are paying more for it. A water washes it all down. We have been back here a few times since. The cook at night is a better cook than the one who works the day shift. While it isn't the most amazing meal you will have, nor is it really a place to take a date, it's a good meal to kick it with the homies after a night out at MSG or drinking. read more

This was my first time at Salt & Pepper. It was a Saturday at noon. I ordered combo meal number three which is the Philly cheesesteak with fries and soda. They put my food on a tray which is a rarity in New York City due to people stealing them. The cheesesteak was basic and not as large like what you would find at Jersey Mike's. The shoestring sized fries were also decent. I enjoyed my meal while watching all of their customers come in from the construction site across the street. I didn't even notice the more ethnic section which is separated but next to the American-based food and menu until I eventually sat down. Instead, I found this place on the same street and decided to try this place out instead. The pizza was really cheap; like a dollar or so, and really cheesy. So S&P serves Spanish and Pakistani-Indian food. All their plates are $5.99. There's roast, baked, stewed, fried chicken with rice and beans or veggies and rice, chicken curry, tikka masala or biryani with rice and vegetables. The dishes are pretty flavorful and the portions will make you full. Not the best or worst I've had. Plates also come with 1/2 a buttered roll. Walked in this place on a Friday afternoon what caught my eye was the $1 pizza. I got extremely excited when I saw they had Indian food. So, of course we had to order the Chicken Tikka Masala very standard dish and it was delicious. Got some greek salad and a slice. The pizza was good for $1 you would get ripped off if you paid more. This place is a solid 3-star restaurant with a deli atmosphere. I picked up a mealpal from this place a couple of times and they were quick and kind for the most part. The food is good, but nothing that I'd go out of my way for. There was a decent amount of bone for the meal I got, which is likely part of the dish but the meat was a little tough to chew through as well. While the atmosphere makes me want to return, I'll have to try more of their dishes to get a good feel for their food. I can only take so much of being around people in blazers with perfectly volumized hair talking about Soulcycle or their latest idea for a social media optimization startup. Sometimes I just want to eat some real food around some real people. One plebian Sunday morning, my dear boyfriend and I were searching for a greasy-spoon, B-grade-on-the-health-inspection type of place to get a massive stack of pancakes. Not some fancy-ass buckwheat pecan-caramel-golddust-locally-grown-snobbery pancakes. Just some normal goddamn Aunt-Jemima-mom-made-this-as-a-treat-on-Sunday-mornings-instead-of-99-cent-discount-brand-knockoff-Cheerios kind of pancakes. Apparently this was an impossible feat at 2pm on a Sunday around 34th and 6th, and we ended up at Parker and Quinn instead, reluctantly taking off our real-people hats. The food was delicious, but still left an Aunt-Jemima shaped hole in our hearts, and our wallets. The New York Yelp definition of "two dollar sign brunch place" is quite unlike anywhere else in the world. On Monday morning we were determined not to fall again for nicely designed menus, real pepper grinders, or well-coiffed waiters in collared shirts. We would accept nothing less than tacky, pixelated photos on overcrowded menus. We demanded salt and pepper packets and plastic cutlery. Our exacting standards for decor left no room for compromise: if there was any aesthetic intention beyond the strictly functional, we wold turn around and walk right back out the door. Salt and Pepper delivered on all of the above. To top it off, we were served the most delicious, massive stack of real-people pancakes that I had ever tasted for 7 bucks. And the home fries - holy crap. I would have devoured that stuff by the bagful. They also make their omelets with real cracked eggs, unlike a lot of breakfast places that target a "loftier" clientele (*cough* the Blake and Todd outside my office, frequented by unremarkable dress-shirt types). None of that liquid egg mix stuff, and you can taste the difference. Have never stopped in for lunch or their other items, but if brunch was anything to go on, they will deliver. Service was fine. I mean, the same guy who takes your order also cooks your food and is responsible for cash. Pretty impressive, all things considered. I know we live in Manhattan, so this is hard - but if you ever get the urge, like I do, to be a real person once in a while, over a stack of really good pancakes or eggs, you can count on Salt and Pepper, haters be damned. With that said they offer a wide range of ethnic cuisines from Spanish food - like roast pork over rice and beans with a little salad on the side, to Indian buffet like fare - like paneer and tiki masala over basmatti. I love Indian food and have gone to numerous restaurants in Manhattan, Queens (Elmhurst) and Long Island (Hicksville). I was hoping to find a decent place near work so I could satisfy my lunch craving but this place was pretty awful. I ordered the Chicken Masala and it was completely dry, flavorless and over priced. They charged $11 ($12 with tax) for the order and basically jammed in a ton of rice with about 3 pieces of chicken and a load of sauce. I was tempted to remind him that i ordered chicken and not rice. I was hoping that the flavors would make up for the lack of chicken but was sadly disappointed - it was flavorless and lacked any heat. Sandwiches, soup, salad... midtown lunch gets old fast. I probably wouldn't be into Salt and Pepper if there was a more diverse selection of food around here. Salt and Pepper is really ghetto. It's a hole-in-the-wall with American, Italian, Indian, and Pakistani food. Four cuisines in one? Reason to worry right? It must be ok though because there's always a line for the chicken, pasta, lasagna, etc. I usually walk straight to the back for the Indian/Pakistani food, which good just becuase it's so spicy. I usually get the $6 vegetable platter with vegetable rice and two vegetables - okra, broccoli, cauliflower, or chickpeas. Sometimes I feel like I'm not getting enough vegetables, but the platter is huge. As a reference, it's probably the size of a Chipotle burrito bowl plus extra rice. Because I love spicy, I'll pick up the jalapeno peppers and raw onion on the side. You can also get a little side of light green yogurt. I still haven't figured out what it is because it doesn't taste like much to me, but I have noticed that it kills the burning feeling in my mouth if I get too ambitious with the peppers. So in short, if you're bored of your lunch, give Salt and Pepper a try. And only eat when you don't have a meeting after lunch because you will get food coma. read more

The pizza is par-cooked and waiting for you to order - so whatever pie you decide upon will be thrust into the oven for a quick refire before it gets to you. The result is, well...worth $5. Might even be worth up to $6. Other items available from Salt & Pepper include halal food (Islamic-dietary-legal), Indian food, vaguely-by-association American (like roasted chicken or beef stew). All of that food is out in warming containers and ready to either please your palate or rock your rectum. Such is life. If you think I'm being mean here, just look at one of the pictures below: an eggroll and cup of coffee for $2. Dare you. The problem here is that there are so many choices for pizza and Middle Eastern food in New York, and even on the same block, that even though the staff was nice (even to a guy wearing a Los Angeles Lakers jacket) and clientele kept to themselves - watching the television mounted on the wall - the atmosphere feels like you're in a train station. I was staying at the Pennsylvania Hotel right across the street and despite how high volume this place can be, one man in particular remembered me AND what I ordered. Their Indian food is amazing. I recommend their lentils, chicken curry, jasmine rice, and tandoori chicken! Don't forget to ask for naan. No- they want you to sit down for table service like a normal restaurant. No ordering yourself. Ok, I have no issue with table service, but at least clean the tables off and give me the real dining experience of not having to eat off of thin paper plates with flimsy plastic utensils! Then you have the nerve to look for a tip after I had to repeatedly ask for my drink! This place should establish itself like a proper restaurant if they want waitstaff. The food was so so-they call themselves serving an array of Latin, Indian/Pakistani, and continental"cuisine" which includes steaks or pizza. That's a red flag right there. Me, being a sucker for Indian, tried the curry chicken. I had to ask for my mango lassi(which didn't taste right at all-didn't even finish it, and I usually can't get enough of a good lassi!) and the naan bread several times before receiving it. But I passed by two days ago and saw that they had completely renovated the place and they had added more options to the menu. They used to have spanish/indian food but now they were serving pizza, salads, and paninis. I was quite impressed and decided to bring my friends to try the renovated place. I was just here for breakfast while I was stay across the street at Hotel Penn. I read several reviews and when I went there was soooo much food and at an amazingly cheap price. It was early and all I wanted was some eggs (I had unfinished business with some guacamole and homemade salsa in my room). Just started working on 7th Ave near Penn last week. I've been trying to find my go-to for breakfast and lunch, preferably within a three block radius--everything is either really expensive (like Fresh & Co) or not good (like Cafe R). So I see a guy on the corner of 7th and 33rd this morning holding a sign saying, cheap good food! I walk over, look at the breakfast specials outside and order the #5, bacon, egg, and cheese on an English muffin. The first thing I'm told--they are OUT OF BACON. OUT OF BACON? Strike one (and strike two!). I substitute ham. Breakfast order comes up and it's on a roll. To recap, I wanted bacon, egg, and cheese on an English muffin and ended up with ham, egg, and cheese on a roll. Breakfast just shouldn't be this complicated. Wife and I love this place. We usually eat here when in Herald Square area. Not bland like some Indian food meant for tourists. I usually get curried lamb with Basmati rice and okra and my wife curried chicken with Spanish yellow rice. To see what type of tastes we are into, our other favorite Indian restaurants are: Indian Taj in Jackson Heights and Five Star in Long Island City Since we don't go at lunch time, there are always plenty of table available and room for luggage if you are traveling. read more
