They have good COVID-19 procedures and the salon was clearly clean and well kept. Now for the most important part... I had gone in with hip length hair and wanted a drastic change after being in quarantine for so long. My hair is 2c wavy/curly, so I'm always pretty hesitant about letting people cut my hair, but Karatrina put me at ease by going over my style goals at the start of the appointment. I wanted shoulder length hair so it would be easier for me to manage my hair. She explained what she was doing at each point and also shared stuff about her own life. I was very comfortable and felt like I have been going to this salon for years. I ended up styling my hair myself when I got home because curly hair is just tricky to style, but she did diffuse my hair so I didn't leave with wet hair! I am more than pleased with my hair! Have you ever seen hair salon scenes in movies and TV shows where the customer and the hair stylist are gabbing and carrying on like close friends? My wife and I live that scene every time Tracy cuts our hair. Not both at the same time, of course. We do have our separate/back-to-back appointments. But that's also a cool thing about Tracy: during our block of time we both get to enjoy gabbing with her but for each of us it's a slightly different experience. But first, a bit of backtrack. In the ensuing four years since my review, Tracy's gotten to know our heads of hair very well. I think with me, her question, "So what are we doing with your hair today? The same thing?" is ceremonial. She knows my hair so well that I, as near-sighted as I am, don't have to don my eyeglasses to check out the cut until after she's done. It's always perfect. The true test of her perfection is the following morning after I've washed and blown dry my hair. The style and shape are perfect--exactly the way I like it. Every single cut. Which amazes me because Tracy and I get into some farflung conversations about food & cooking, movies, TV, books, and some politics. While moving through all these different subjects she maintains complete focus on the haircut. I hear her talking to my wife about similar subjects while giving her the same, beautiful cut each time. OK, she's a bit more experimental with my wife, trying a slightly different style or length, using a product, giving my wife tips on how to use that product and other tricks for getting her hair to maintain its same look and shape every morning. I of course need no such coaching, not with my shorter hair. And besides, with the way Tracy cuts my man hair, I could let it air dry, look in the mirror and smile, "Perfect." We've learned much about Tracy as she's learned about us these past four years. She's a warm and truly good person and man! Does she know a lot about all kinds of stuff as well as being highly skilled in other professional areas. It's always a joy to visit with her. We make a point of scheduling our back to back appointments weeks in advance because she only works Saturdays. It's kind of like going to a Saturday movie matinee every few weeks--but the three of us are in the movie.

I bring in a photo of me in my very basic style that I have had the last several years. Mid neck length trim, use of texture scissors on the ends. Nothing trendy, nothing with layers, super basic and easy that is nothing special at all. Confirmed with stylist three times, showed photo twice, had to ask twice for it to be cut shorter... Then I just said "fine" just wanting to leave. It was awkward. Looking closer at home, she only did slight texture in the front but in the back is a straight, blunt cut line - WTF, who does that??? It looks horrible. And there are multiple small sections that are an inch longer than those around it. I have to go in and fix it myself now. And then she charged me $12 more than what I've normally been charged in the last couple years. She did not style my hair or put in any finishing product, so why the extra charge? She didn't do anything more than what I always get. I usually tip a little over 25% in cash, this time was bare minimum. Great big NOPE. That's what finally did it, I'm done with this place. Shop lost a regular repeating customer.

Communication is key, there is always some turnover at these types of places so if you don't work with the same person frequently, make sure you know what you want and if you have any comments, discuss them as you go or beforehand. Last summer I decided to attempt finding a new stylist. I had a balayage and cut with Teri, and it turned out perfectly. I saw her again this month and couldn't be happier with another balayage/trim. She's talented, her suggestions are also spot on, and I receive several compliments.
