So, the salon over all I would give 4 stars...but if you need your MAKEUP done--go to KARA!! 5 stars, 6 if I could give them. She did my hair and makeup for a wedding, and I used the candids from that day for my business headshot for awhile...the one of me with short hair on my yelp profile ;) A picture speaks a thousand words.. plus, she is the sweetest. I wanted to like this place but am swearing it off after one too many truly negative and uncomfortable sessions at Salon XS. There are a few select stylists here who are very gossipy and mean spirited and whose behavior is impossible to ignore. Each time I came here, I would have to listen to the same stylists gossiping with one another and gossiping in a very immature and catty manner, often about their own CLIENTS. Several of the staff members also condescend to their clients in a way that is so transparent it's pathetic. Many of them seem downright unhappy to be working and seem to act as if they are doing you a favor by doing your hair. I started coming here in 2014 for hair color and cut and have watched this place go down hill, slowly turning into a catty cosmetology cafe. Who wants to spend money to sit in a chair only to feel like you're back at the high school cafeteria among a bunch of gossipy mean girls? The owner of this salon should put rules in place about what is considered professional for staff members to talk about while customers are around if she wants to maintain the business. read more

Worth a second chance!! I had been to Salon XS twice before about a year ago and had an ok experience, nothing that would make me eager to get back. Howard, I was recently referred to a Hair stylist their named Patti. Approaching the door with a bit of trepidation I went in with an open mind, Thank Goodness I did, BEST HAIR OF MY LIFE! The color is stunning; I have received more compliments on the cut than I have ever had in my life. The entire staff was friendly and inviting. The young lady who styled my hair Lauren, was an absolute doll who could not have been any nicer. The staff worked together seamlessly. I have to say, this was the best experience I could have hoped for. So do them a second chance or a first if you have yet to visit. Definitely worth a trip! read more

I came across Salon XS when I first moved away from my hometown salon and desperately needed an eyebrow wax. First off, they take walk-ins, which I'm a huge fan of considering I suck at making appointments. They're very friendly there and welcomed me like I was one of their regulars, which I like. I mean, hey, if you're working on my face, you better act like we're best friends. I'm pretty picky about where I get my eyebrows done, so I was nervous, but the girl did a fantastic job. After my favorite hairdresser closed her business, I had to search for a new salon to take my business to. I asked around and was told to try Salon XS, and I'm glad I did. I highly recommend booking an appointment with Kara. She's just plain awesome. I brought in a picture of the hairstyle I wanted and she gave me exactly what was in the picture. She took the time to ask what I wanted to make sure we were on the same page. I can't wait to go back to have her style my hair again. The only con about Salon XS is that you sometimes have to wait a little while before you're actually taken to have your hair done, since there's usually someone getting a cut or color before you. So I moved to Waltham and first went to a very so-so soup-bowl cut salon, and then a friend recommended Salon XS. I had Jessica cut my hair for years and when she left I was panicked, but they said I would be happy with Kara and they were right. I love this open and spacious salon with really good stylists. I especially love Erin Burke who has figured out how to cut my somewhat unruly hair in a way that is easy to style while still stylish. very pleasant atmosphere. Excellent colorist skills as well. I have to say that this is definitely the place to go for any beauty service, from waxing, to pedicures, color, cut or even just a blow dry for a special occasion. Salon XS is a great experience every time I go! I leave in a good mood because it's a fun place to go! The girls there are fun, kind and can be pretty funny! I have NEVER gone anywhere else and never would. I suggest it highly. Also, my daughter just got married and they did her hair and make up and she looked absolutely stunning! She got so many compliments! I am not just saying that because I'm her mom either! It's just true! The team at the salon did her whole wedding party! Hair and make up and they all looked stunning also! They too were asked by many where they went for their hair and make up! By the way, they themselves loved it, most importantly! The best part about it was how all the girls pitched in and made sure everything was PERFECT! Such great team work by all of them. As for myself I have been going there for 27 plus years and you'd never catch me anywhere else as I said in the start of this review! If you live anywhere near The Waltham, Newton area I would definitely give this place a try! I am confident you'd leave feeling pretty!
