I've been a loyal client of Kenta's for many years and just discovered that he moved over to Salon Sanjoy! Kenta is always responsive to my feedback and requests, and the experience was an absolute pleasure (as per usual). He's great with asian hair, and I trust his expertise completely. This location is super convenient off of Main Street, and I like the cozy atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the layout of the space is intimate while making great use of large mirrors. Hoping others will consider checking this place out! Great New Salon! It isn't often I take time to write a review on Yelp. But I was very happy with my experience at this new salon. The previous week I got a haircut at another salon that ended up not looking very good and was exhibiting rather odd layers. My bangs were also still hanging in my eyes and most of my friends couldn't even tell I had gotten a haircut. So I was off the Paulina stop shopping at Bazar (a great place too) and saw the new salon lights on and three very friendly (and stylish) faces. They took me in right away and I explained my dilemma to the stylist, Samantha. Samantha was wonderfully friendly and full of suggestions. She explained what she could do to fix the awkward layers showed me what the other stylist had done. She was never rude about my previous haircut nor competitive which I found to be very respectful. I enjoyed talking with her the entire time and the conversation never felt awkward or forced. She also understood when I explained that I wanted my bangs to be a bit funky and trendy and said she really enjoys getting to do such cuts. And I love my bangs. They turned out wonderfully and I can see now. She showed me the best way to blow dry them and encouraged me to swing by whenever I need them trimmed. The price was also wonderful. It was a very positive experience and I don't want to put my winter hat on. read more

Sanjoy gave me what my husband described as "The best haircut of my life," yesterday. He is extremely knowledgeable about hair, particularly what will look good with hair types and faces. He refused to give me bangs, which I appreciated, saying they were wrong for me. Additionally, he cut my hair with a razor and I have long, thick, wavy hair and it looks gorgeous. The best part? My husband had been over at another salon, having his mane massacred. He came to see me and announced he wasn't leaving the house for two months. Sanjoy sat him down and, in about 15 minutes, fixed his hair (for free!) so that there were no more threats to become a hermit. Highly, highly recommended. read more

Overall experience of the environment/cleanliness was a 10/10. The issue seemed to be that SanJoy (the stylist) wasn't use to my hair texture/thickness/length & time became a problem. I originally went in for a keratin treatment (maybe a little trim) but before showing me where he was going to cut, my hair was on the ground. Hair grows back but quite unfortunate when it's uneven & cut without much discussion. The keratin that was used didn't get to fully dry, so when he started to flat iron - my hair would sizzle in areas (which caused frizz/frying). He was was very kind and from pictures looks like he's done amazing work on others!! Unfortunately, my hair was a bit of a challenge for him & the research I did on him prior wasn't thorough enough. With that being said just wanted to leave this review for first time clients to be extra vocal and persistent on what they want done with their hair. Very heartbroken & disappointed with the results - just wish we would've had a consultation first to see if he could work with my hair. I hate my hair now lol read more

I'll start off by saying I was a bit skeptical to go here based on some of the previous Yelp reviews but my friend got her hair done here and gave it a good review so I thought I'd give it a shot. I've now gone here twice and I can say that this place is tops. Arielle does my cut and Jessica does my color. Both are very nice and listen to what you want before they actually go and do it. Both times I've gone here I've left with a satisfied cut and color. In addition the atmosphere is very laid back. There doesn't seem to be many appts. scheduled at a given time so the place seems a bit empty at times but it certainly didn't bother me. In fact, everyone who works there will stop by and chat with you while your hair is getting processed and go out of their way to accomodate you. I recommend giving this place a try. The owner, Sanjoy, is a great guy, too so you can't go wrong with Salon Sanjoy! read more

You should not have your hair colored nor cut by Sanjoy. He does not listen to his clients. He used to be at Fringe and his name was highly recommended by Allure mag. I went for a cut and color. The cut was uneven in length. I requested for warm brown color (my hair is black) but, instead he opted to color my hair jet black!! He didn't listen to me and his comment was that he does not think warm brown will look good on me. And looking like Joan Jett does? Why did I even go there? I had to go back to my original salon and have them fix the damage. Since Samantha received high ratings from yelpers, if you decide to go to this salon, request for her and not Sanjoy. read more

I saw on offer on Groupon and decided to try Salon Sanjoy, so I scheduled an appt for a cut. The staff was super friendly. I got there early, and they got me in right away. The girl at the front desk even got me coffee! The owner of the salon cut my hair. He was talkative and friendly. However, what I thought was very unprofessional is that when he heard I had a groupon, he started complaining about a previous groupon client. He told me her hair was so thick it took forever to cut, and then he told me he was angry because her hair was so thick, he broke a $35 brush trying to brush her hair! Now as far as the haircut... I have VERY long hair and I originally wanted about two or three inches cut off. He suggested I cut about 5 or 6 inches. I was ready for a change, so I agreed. Perhaps I agreed a little too easily, because he ended up cutting nine inches off. When he originally showed me where my hair would be, it was at my shoulder blades. However, when he was finished, it was just touching my shoulders. This is NOT what I wanted. (With that being said, it was cut well, just way shorter than I wanted). Now, if he had given me the hair cut I wanted, I would've rated them a 4 star. If he would've given me the haircut I wanted, and had he NOT complained about other clients, I would've given them a five star. read more

I hate to give Samantha such a great review because I want to be able to see her when I want!! But, I know how hard it is to find a great hair specialist - she's my hair's hero! :) I hadn't had my hair cut in about 8 months, and before that it was 6 months. I loved the length - but sadly, it was in need of a cut. Sam "forced" me to get layers ..... thank goodness! My hair is now light and fresh - vs. heavy and bland. Love, love, love this salon. I originally found out about them through salonapprentice and have been going back since. Erin gave me a wonderful haircut that still looks fantastic 6 months after. Not to mention that I was growing out a horrible wedge that she fixed up beautifully. Jessica is a genius with color. I told her I wanted bright red and she did dark red/violet with bright red the first time, and the last time I had it done we tried something diferent and I've never loved a color so much. Love this salon! I recently moved to the city and have had a hard time finding a good salon where I could get both a cut and color. My first experience at Salon Sanjoy was a Groupon Get It Now deal for a blow out. While I was there I told the girl (Samantha) what I was looking for and how I hadn't found it yet. After talking to her and Sanjoy himself, I booked an appt for cut and color the next week. LOVED EVERYTHING THEY DID! Sanjoy told me what I had and what I wanted and he was right! Awesome haircut! Samantha then took over and did an Ombre color effect. Awesome color! Today, two and a half months after my first visit, I went back for a cut and color touch up. LOVE IT AGAIN! Pricewise, I used a 20% coupon that they had emailed me. I would rather pay $70 for a GREAT hair cut than $50 for a bad/just ok one! read more

This salon is awesome! Samantha and Sanjoy are easy to get along with and chat with! It is a very calm environment, I really liked the minimalist approach in the decor of the salon. The product line they carry is amazing, and although the products are a little high end, they are worth every penny. My highlight/low light came out awesome, I am so happy with the results. This is also a great spot for anyone living right off the brown line, its at the Paulina stop, so its easy to get to! The shop bazzar next door is cute and affordable clothing, so you can get your hair done, and get a great outfit and you are set for the night! Great salon, great prices and excellent service! After weeks of mostly bad hair days, I was looking for a new stylist. I suspected that I had found a winner when Sanjoy showed me why my previous haircut wasn't working--the layering was wrong for my thick, coarse hair, giving me volume in all the wrong places. I went along with his suggestions, and the result was a big improvement. But the real test of a haircut is how it grows out. His cut grew out beautifully. One of the best haircuts I've ever gotten in the cIty. I have really thick hair and was going for a complete transformation from long hair to a short bob and Arielle was amazing! She took her time to make sure it was a perfect haircut and was really easy and comfortable to talk to. I will be telling all of my friends about her! The salon is also great. I was nervous about going to a new salon but my hair was in desperate need of a cut and I had one of those deals I snagged online. I've had bad experiences in the past that made me really weary of letting anyone touch my hair. I'm talking rude staff and hairdressers that don't know how to cut hair to what you want or what fits you - we've all been there right? Not the case with Salon Sanjoy, the staff is all super friendly and I feel like they have a good grasp of their trade. I told Sanjoy the two things I didn't want but that I was open to any other suggestions. He cut it very well, just a little shorter then what I am used to. Overall I was happy with it and the product they use, Arrojo line is amazing! Makes your hair so shiny and smooth - surprised they didn't ask if I was interested in purchasing it because now thinking about it, I should have. Sanjoy is sociable and seems like an easygoing guy, definitely makes the hair cutting process less stressful and the salon is clean and modern. They also have a nice website, very easy to schedule your appointment on it. I also highly suggest checking out their Facebook page - they have a handful of before and after photos of a few of their customers. That was what ultimately had me buy the coupon to want to go there, when you see that a salon can take some of the worst hair and make it fabulous - you know they are good. The only downside is it's a bit on the pricey side, $70 for a haircut is a bit steep to me but when you are getting a great cut with great product it may be worth it. since my years as a little boy in taiwan, when my hair was cut where mom got her hair styled, sanjoy is the only place i've returned to consistently. yes, haircuts there might be a bit pricey for cheapskates like myself, but i'd say it's totally worth it. in fact, i think money might even be saved in the long term. i have thin asian hair that likes to stick out on the sides when it gets a little long, and so for a long time, i would just get haircuts frequently to keep myself from looking too much like a bobcat (or hugh jackman as wolverine, but without the facial hair...ew). but then i tried sanjoy (as part of a promotional deal), and my hair no longer stuck out on the sides when it got longer. he said it has something to do with the angle it is cut at...or something, but either case, my haircuts now last longer. - fewer haircuts = less money spent! another thing i soon noticed upon my first few sanjoy haircuts is that i stopped using hair product. he cuts my hair according to how my hair falls so after i wash my hair, i just sorta dry it with a towel and let the atmosphere do the rest. once the hair is dry, it looks styled! and, because i don't use product, the texture of the hair looks more natural (because it is) and people have asked me what product i use for such a natural look. - no more hair product = money saved! sanjoy seems to get around to teach/learn at different hair art related conferences and is up with the times. sometimes my haircuts are similar to my previous haircuts (esp. when i ask for that), but other times, i ask him to do something different and let him decide what to do. the new hair styles always look good, if not great, and the wife is always intrigued when i come home with a new look. - new styles = more nookie! and more nookie = five stars. read more

My experience with Sanjoy was very strange. Last week I walked by and saw that they were looking for hair models, so I stopped by. The receptionist was very friendly and explained that I would come in and consult with the hairstylist to see if my type of hair/length was something they needed for one of the apprentices to work on. I came back, consulted with Samantha, who suggested changing the tone of my highlights (too yellowish) and said I was a good candidate for a layered cut. She advised me to allow quite a few hours for the trainee to work on my hair, approximately 4 hours. The receptionist informed me that the price for highlights and cut done by the trainee with the supervision of the hairstylist (Samantha) would be $35. I thought "great," if I liked the highlights I would definitely become a regular client. So I scheduled the appointment. The trainee (Adrianna) was super nice and competent, but she seemed very nervous and towards the end I could see why. The person (who I later learned is the owner) was downright rude to her in front of other people, insisted on a different cut than I had previously discussed with Adrianna, and simply took the scissors and comb from her hands and started working on my hair, saying she was doing everything wrong. She was totally embarrassed and her face got pink; I felt really sorry for her and wondered how someone without a drop of good manners can own a hair salon. I declined the cut he attempted to give me; he became argumentative and hostile. I told Adrianna to cut just a little around my face. Because I was serving as "hair model,"the owner probably thought I was just there because of the discount; however, HE REALLY LOST A POTENTIAL CLIENT. Moreover, another client was offered other drinks in addition to water; that's all I was offered, clearly for not paying full price. The owner obviously does not have a clue about customer service, for I will never come back. Moreover, even though I was paying a lot less, the trainee was practicing on my hair, a trade-off. At the end, I was charged $50, not the agreed $35. I didn't say anything, just wanted to get the hell out of there. However, I made sure to tip Adrianna handsomely and handed the tip directly to her, just in case... read more

I've been her regular client for several years, she is very professional and always delivers on color, cut, & style that will make you feel like a model when you leave her chair. He has been cutting my hair for almost two years, and he has done a top-notch job every single time. I have thick, curly, hard-to-manage hair. I bought a CBS local coupon for a haircut at Salon Sanjoy not knowing anything about the salon. I had no desire to pay $45 for a trim so I though the $18 will be well spent. I've been growing out my hair for a year now so I only wanted a trim. My first impression of the salon was good. It is small but very clean and orderly in a great location. Samantha was my stylist. Only her and the owner do hair. Sorry to say but Samantha was a buzz kill! Anything I said she had something negative to say whether we were discussing my career choice or the neighborhood I lived in. I also felt insulted while discussing my hair. I over heard the owner talking with another client and he seemed pleasant but unfortunately I was stuck with the ice queen. I don't have much to say about my hair cut, it could have been done anywhere. Samantha gave me her card but as soon as I walked out the door I threw it away. Not only was she rude and bitter, but hair cuts are regularly $46! Definitely NOT worth it! read more
