I'm a hair hopper. I jump stylists constantly and I'm terrible to my hair. I'm surprised I'm not bald, yet. I've been every color under the sun (and everything from blonde to brown to red in the last year). I finally decided to go see Richard after reading the reviews and seeing the pictures of the salon for months. The salon is adorable! I came back from Paris not long ago, and it does look like something you would duck Into off a Parisian street in Montmarte. Everything is incredibly tasteful and cute. They carry the harder to find brands of Kevin Murphy (thank the animal safe gods!) and Oribe as well as this amazing perfume brand of Juliette has a Gun which I'm addicted to. They carry a ton of other great items but I didn't have a ton of time to peruse since they were quick to get me seated and consulted. Richard talked to me about what I was looking for, looked at my pictures and helped me identify any problem areas I had with my hair. I've been really, exceptionally happy with the cut. I have curly hair and anything but a blunt cut will frizz out in spectacular fashion in weeks. My color has been an adjustment but I think that's more me than Richards great work. I've been complimented repeatedly on my natural highlights and now darker color. I plan to go back in about 6-8 weeks for my touch up! I will say that I've seen some people comment on price but I was paying a heck of a lot more in Connecticut and at other salons in Northeast so to see the head of the salon and have a full cut and color cost me what it did I was shocked at how reasonably priced it was. It maybe be more than some Minnesotans can/will be willing to swallow. But you get what you pay for. I got awesome on a deal. read more

Going to Salon Rouge is like taking an excursion to a Parisian boutique - not that I have ever been to Paris but the owners of the salon certainly have. Richard Staab, the owner/stylist, is a collector who has captured Paris and put it right into his boutique salon. Salon Rouge is tucked in the same brownstone that houses Eli's; when you walk past the salon it has a rather unassuming store front. But once you enter, it is truly like being in another world. The rich, vibrant colours and the calming scents that permeate the salon are an experience in itself. Truly, you have to go inside to get the feel of the most beautiful salon in all of Minneapolis (and I have been to quite a few of them). I come to Salon Rouge to get my hair colored by Richard, and to buy the awesome cosmetic products that the salon houses. The scents for the home are so relaxing; they are scents that both men and women can enjoy. I am enamored by the Comme des Garcon scents; I actually use one of the body sprays as I iron my clothes because it's soft and refreshing at the same time. I'm one of the Groupon folks. I'm in search of a stylist and Alicia may be it. My cut and color are exactly what I asked for and she took the time to figure out what work work for me. She's professional and nice to talk to but isn't overly chatty, which I like. I was also entertained by the impressive selection of current magazines available. I didn't require too much entertainment though because my cut and partial color only took two hours. I was thrilled to walk out of the salon before my butt got numb. I also love the environment. This place is so chic and relaxing. It is luxe. The few cons are: 1) there is only metered parking and you may have trouble finding a spot and 2) their website doesn't work so it's hard to gauge prices and find further information on the salon 3) the Kevin Murphy products reek to me. Used my Groupon here a few months ago. I told the stylist what I wanted and didn't really get what I want. I should have known what to expect as several times throughout the coloring she mentioned how I should come back because after one or two times she would be able to blend my roots with my requested hi and low lights. Interesting. I'm sorry, in all the years I've had my hair colored I've never had someone not attempt my request on the first try. I tipped her well, on the original cost. Partly because it appeared it was close to what I had requested in the salon. However, after getting home and looking at it, didn't appear so much. Over the next week I would mention to friends that I DID just have my hair colored they would say they couldn't tell. Bummer. Chalk it up to experience and at least it was a Groupon price. read more

Yet another great establishment in my new neighborhood! I've been to see Nell twice since my big relocation to the Twin Cities and I cannot tell you how enjoyable the experiences have been! And I have to say, I think the prices are reasonable considering the quality of service they provide even though they are rated $$$! The decor of the salon cannot be compared to - the Parisian art and feel of the shop makes you completely relaxed. It is obvious that the owner has done a lot to make this an Experience not just another trip to the salon. They offer you a multitude of beverages to enjoy while you are getting your bimonthly cut and color and offer a lot in the way of boutique like shopping (home scents, jewelry, trinkets, etc). I have to disagree with one of the reviewers here who disliked the stylists suggestion of coming back to achieve the desired result. I have made the irreversible mistake of going to someone who did what I asked only to have my hair suffer for it. Nell took what I wanted into consideration and then made the ultimate, professional decision as to what was the best for my hair, my grow-out, and what we could do next time to get me closer to my desired look. I'd rather have someone be candid with me then do something that could damage my hair and make me look silly a few weeks down the line. let me just clarify, that this review is not for anyone hair cutting talent. Its more about my experience with them. I called on a Saturday to get a haircut for my baby shower. they said they had one opening at 1:00 (which was 10 mins from my call to them). so i dropped everything and rushed out to make it on time. i was trying to find parking at 1pm so i called and confirmed that I was going to be 10 mins late and if they will still be able to accommodate me. the guy at the front desk said yes. so i find parking and run in. At this point its 1:15 and Nell tells me that she can do the haircut but wont dry my hair. Normally it would be fine but i had my own baby shower to attend i was very pregnant and uncomfortable. and arranging for anything else at that point would be impossible. Anyway i ended up at my shower 1 hour late as i had to shower and try to blowdry my hair myself. not the end of the world but i wish they were more straight forward when i called multiple times to confirm they can accommodate me. *** 1/15/14 UPDATE The owner Richard was kind enough to email me. He offered me a free haircut to try them out. Which I did. I think he is a savvy business owner and a good artist. He listened carefully and advised me well on my new haircut. read more

Just had my third cut and color with Nell, and I am finally getting around to reviewing. I felt compelled to now, because she is so consistently awesome! Not only was she able to make my long blonde hair look professional and clean, but when I was ready to get rid of it (this third time) she gave me a fantastic chic shorter cut. Her color work is beautiful, I get so many compliments! But wait, there's more! She has a fantastic personality, and conversation is never an effort (unlike many I've gone to). I'm an Asian guy looking for a good hairdresser that can take care of my mane and I found the right place at Salon Rouge. It's located at the basement of a building and is very nicely furnished and decorated. Feels weird to be pampered when I usually go for cheaper places. My hairstylist was Jean and she as amazing in every single aspect. It can be awkward for a guy to go into a fancy salon like this but Jean made sure I was so comfortable and she chatted with me just about everything. She had an excellent attention to detail and accommodated my every request with Further improvements. For a guy, it is kind of spendy especially when we require a haircut almost every month. I just had an awesome haircut at Salon Rouge. I'm not the best at communicating what I want, but Richard always makes me look my best and gives me courage to try new haircuts. I feel relaxed and inspired at the salon. I cheated on my usual stylist with an enticing Groupon and I don't regret it. My cut and color (a spicy reddish-brown) was done my Nell and she did a great job without overhauling my whole look. She simply refreshed and prettified me just as I requested. And yes the atmosphere is marvelous, but it's fancy without being fussy. You feel right at home and the chairs don't just look great, they were so comfortable! The rest of the service was good too. I was offered a refreshment upon arrival, they plugged my meter for me (though next time I know they offer FREE PARKING in the Eli's lot), and I wasn't made to feel like a cheap-ass just because I had a Groupon. I've been searching for a new salon and found a Groupon deal for a haircut, deep condition, and style for a really great price. Unfortunately I can't remember my stylist's name but I was very happy with how she cut my hair! I showed her a number of pictures of the cut I wanted and she gave me exactly what I was looking for (which isn't always the case at some salons despite providing multiple pictures of what you want). The cutest and nicest looking salon ever! I got my hair cut and full head highlights there about a month or so ago. My hair cut experience was just so-so. I think it was because I didnt really know what I wanted. I only told the hair-stylist that I want a shorter hair .. around my chin, but my hair got chopped slightly below my ears. I looked absolutely like a mushroom from super mario, and have been called a mushroom by my bf for a more than a month now. Even though I have become a mushroom, I have to applaud how attentive and detailed the hair stylist was. The full head highlights though was outstanding. She was very detailed and very patient folding all the foils all over my mushroom head. She mixed the right color, made sure that the air was not too hot and my mushroom head was heated long enough to get the right color. Overall the experience was really nice. I would go back there again, but this time I will make sure to do some research so that I know exactly what I want for my hair cut. read more

tl;dr: Salon Rouge is good value! Excellent hair styling and makeup application at a very good price. They do not gouge for wedding hair and I adore them for keeping the market reasonable. Sadie styled my hair for my wedding and it was simply perfect! I showed her some photos of general vintage feel that I was looking for and she executed it perfectly! During the trial run a piece of hair became loose because of the heat and my hair was shorter so I let Sadie know and she took care of that potential trouble spot for the wedding. My hair looked AMAZING all night long and it stayed put! If you are looking for an updo, she is fantastic. Sadie is also really good at helping her clients understand what works for them. Initially I was planning on keeping my hair down but after talking through a wedding day logistics and the type of hair I have we were able to find something suitable. Jeffrey did my makeup and I looked so glam :D As someone that does not wear much makeup he was a great translator for me and explained why specific products were needed, what touch-up was needed throughout the wedding day, and was very details focused. He really made sure that my lip color (the one I wanted) didn't wash me out and I am so appreciative for his genuine care on how I would look. read more

The fabulous Rachel cut my hair this afternoon. I went into Salon Rouging wanting a trim, the framing around my face corrected, and to have my layers blended better. I couldn't be more happy about my experience with Rachel. I wanted a trim, and a trim I got. The minimal amount of length was taken off. My layers are perfectly blended, and she fixed the framing around my face with ease. She didn't fall short of spectacular. She listened to my wants and concerns, then executed them seamlessly. I got the groupon and called to schedule an appt. To be honest, unless I was willing to wait a few weeks, they only had very inconvenient time slots available, but I decided not to wait and take what they had. I dont know if they are that busy, or have a few designated groupon appointments per day....when I was there, it was not busy at all..... Alicia did my partial highlights and a cut. The whole thing took about 2.5 hours and I was not rushed or anything. She really took the time to find out what I wanted and then I got it. I think I look pretty cute. The way she styled my hair at the end, was not what I wanted or really liked, but I have said to her to do whatever she felt like, so I guess she did okay. Also, I do have to say that it is the cutest salon Ive ever been too. Here they agree that the Victorian era was the best, and they try to live it everyday. Also, (a personal pet-peeve of mine) - but this salon has no weird smells, i.e. - it does not smell of clean fresh flowers or toxic chemicals. If there is a salon in a basement somewhere in Paris, I bet it looks like salon Rouge. They definitely get the award for the most coolest bathroom and the most adorable decor hands down. read more

Had my haircut here back in 2013 by nabbing a groupon deal. Charlotte (no longer at the salon) was my stylist and she did an absolute WONDERFUL job, beautiful technique and styling! I was so pleased with the results and was very in love with my hair after my service. It was way above average but wasn't like oh my gosh life changing! The salon is very chic and posh! There is no parking with is a huge inconvenience! I advise getting there early to give yourself time. Was not too thrilled with the receptionist - when I inquired on location and parking he made it sound like I was inconveniencing him, great way to get your clients or newcomers excited to get their hair cut let alone spend their money and get treated that way. Anywho, I recently came across a groupon for their salon again and called asking if those who have been there already are eligible to repurchase and get a service again. No surprise the receptionist had the "your an inconvenience" tone, and told me no it's just for first time clients - which I think is pretty lame, would have loved it if they would open the deal to everyone and anyone. First off - this salon is super adorable. But you can tell that from the pictures posted on their website, so let's get to the good stuff - the hair. I saw Jessica last night at Salon Rouge for a cut and color. I came in with dry split ends and old ombre color - so pretty, right? Jessica suggested a few different options of what we should do with my hair and we decided on doing a deep, rich brown with some subtle red/magenta tones thrown in for good measure. My hair is fairly long and I wanted to keep my length but still do something different, so I just let her take control over the cut - she has super long hair herself, so I know she gets it when you say you want to keep your length. Hanging out in the chair while Jessica was applying the color, I almost fell asleep - the salon is so cozy and small, which I loved - not a lot of blow dryers going or loud talking - totally the atmosphere I needed after a long day at work. I think a really great characteristic in a stylist is knowing that fine line between too much conversation and not enough; Jessica, in my opinion, was awesome at this. She's pretty personable, so conversation never lacked or felt forced, which always makes for a great experience. After the color was rinsed out and the hair was cut (she did both a wet cut to take the length off and dry cut to finish up the layering and the bang-a-langs), I left feeling awesome and oh so pretty. The color is absolutely gorgeous and so rich, and the cut is just that little bit of something different I was hoping for. I will definitely be coming back to see her! (Side note - I purchased a Groupon for my first visit here, and wanted to leave the stylist a tip on my card since I had forgotten to take cash out on my way to the salon. If you don't have cash or check on you, you'll have to purchase something in order to leave a tip on the credit card if your Groupon covers the entire amount of your service. Great place. As soon as I set foot in it and noticed the decor/customer attention I was sold as a long-term customer. The place looks like a James Bond super villain lair and that is pretty awesome. I've never written a view online. Ever. But I feel the need to write a review- my experience was just that great. I was lucky enough to get in last minute at Salon Rouge. Seriously last minute. I called at 11 and there was a cancellation so I was in at 1. The atmosphere is both relaxed and high end at the same time. Richard completely transformed my fine hair and did what I thought was impossible: he gave my hair body with hardly any product and then gave me specific instructions on how to make my hair look the same every day. Also- I need to mention this because I think it speaks to Richard's character- I had no idea that he was the owner and essentially a big deal in the Twin Cities. I looked him up after because he was out of business cards and I wanted to have his information. He is nonjudgmental and really funny. Jeanne is my hair soul mate. I love her, and I love what she does to my hair. Jeanne has great technical skills and style, but what really makes her one of a kind is her empathy for her clients. If you're willing to open up to her, she has an extraordinary gift for seeing people clearly, understanding where they are in their lives, and helping them to develop the image they want to project in the world. I have absolute confidence in Jeanne, and even if I can't see where she's going with something, I always defer to her judgement and have never been disappointed. I've been going to her for nearly two years and almost never get the same cut/color twice. Yet every time I go, I walk away feeling like I look like ME. I especially like seeing Jeanne right before an important event. I always leave feeling confident and empowered. Salon Rouge is fun and eclectic. Richard, the owner, is very considerate of all his stylists' clients, and that sets the tone throughout the salon. This is not a mall-chain, so you won't find a $10 haircut, but for the quality of service you are receiving, the prices are a steal. I went in a week ago to get a full foil, haircut, conditioning and style. I had Charlotte, and was her last client of the day. They left me alone until about 30 minutes past my appointment time (good thing I left early from work and rushed over), then called me over. I've never had such an uncomfortable visit at a salon, where the stylist seemed like they absolutely hated talking to their clients (and I'm a fun, talkative person). She also reacted in a strange way to each of my requests, like I was extremely confusing and talked down to me about how I explained what I wanted. I've never had any issue with this before at a salon. So anyway, that was fun. The end product turned out just fine, I'm happy enough with her work. I just can't imagine putting up with another awkward visit when I can go to other salons and have a way better experience while getting the same result. Bummer, thought I had found my new salon after reading all these great reviews! Side note: SR does not have its own parking as reflected in another review; you have to pay to park in the ramps (or find a spot on the street if your appointment will be less than 2 hours). Update: After a couple of weeks have gone by, I've noticed more and more that the quality of the highlights in my hair are not the best. There are uneven spots and hair where it was dyed up to an inch away from the root. I haven't found any problem with the haircut, but taking off an additional star from my original review due to the low quality of the highlights. read more

augh, the old adage is true! one a cheater, always a cheater... and now i'm no exception! i've totally never cheated on my hairdresser, but what's a girl to do?? i'm on a ten-week stint away from home, my bangs were eating my face, and gym ponytails are for... well, the gym. thinking this would be a one-time affair {and not wanting to spend a lot of money on a hair dresser i have zero emotional attachment to), i made an appointment at the juut school in uptown. but one too many hair school horror stories later, i decided to find a bumble & bumble salon nearby and just fork over the money. imagine my surprise to find that the nearest bumble & bumble salon is just blocks from my house! whaaa?? what kind of salon would be in my 'hood? it's neither chic nor poppin', so i was curious what i would find. but salon rouge is a hidden gem :: you have no idea what to expect, but when you take the plush, carpeted stairs down to the salon, you find this parisian, old world style hideaway that is just so friggin darling, you instantly feel like you're having a better hair day. aside from getting a great haircut for 40 bones {forty bones! cheap!}, i got a badass scalp massage with my fav bumble shampoo, lots of junky celebrity-infused magazines to indulge in, and i left smelling like a million bucks b/c their waiting area is like a barney's counter... costume national, comme des garcons, diptyque maybe? i can't even remember, it was so overwhelming... i wanted to buy everything... their jewelry, a mason pearson brush... but instead, i just sprayed myself with everything. anyways, this place is great. and not expensive. but you'll leave feeling like a rich old french lady. and looking like you just got a really good haircut. read more

I have really long, damaged hair, and it's always stressful getting it cut how I want it. This was the first haircut I was happy with in a long time! I bought the Groupon for the cut/style/deep conditioning treatment, and it was exactly what I needed. The deep conditioning made my hair feel like human hair again instead of fake and fried, and my stylist (Rachel) was super friendly, knowledgeable, and understood exactly what I was asking for.
