The salon is in a shopping center with ample parking. It's spacious and clean. Jim saw me right on time and assessed my hair. I was way over do for a cut and was losing my curl pattern. Once cut it was washed and treated and he took me to another chair. I never laid back for diffusion and this was the first time. The chair goes back for good diffusing position. I came in after cutting 10 inches off of my hair to donate it. I wanted someone to clean it up for me. They did an excellent job! Great care was taken to perfect the cut and considering I've had very long hair for 10+ years, I love love love the cut. They cut it dry which I requested because I have wavy hair. I left with a beautiful straight style but styled it at home later because I was getting used to having short hair and wanted to see it in its typical style. I am a no efforts kind of girl and wanted to make sure the cut worked well with little work. It's still amazing with minimal styling! Added bonus: I did not feel judged for cutting my own hair! Not just 'great'-more like fabulous! I don't know why this salon doesn't have more reviews. Maybe the location? That did not deter me; it was a quick, pretty Uber trip to suburban Wynnewood West shopping plaza and bonus-the salon is a few doors down from Sangkee Asian Bistro should one be peckish after some beautification. My hair has not been acquainted with scissors since last year and to be blunt-it looked frightful. My last cut looked like someone had clipped a shape out of a paper bag and glued it to my head. That haircut had nothing to do with me, my face or my hair's growth pattern. When that kinda thing happens, there are 2 solutions-let it grow out or shave it all off. I chose the former, more conservative route. Salon Papillon is bright, open, clean and airy. It's a full service salon that offers Deva cuts, regular cuts, color, straightening, keratin treatments and probably anything else that can be done to and/or with your barnet fair. Strict COVID precations are in place and everyone was masked. I arrived a few minutes early, had my temperature taken and was seated right away. Jim (Jian) was the gent who cut my hair. He was cordial without being phony and wasted no time; he immediately asked me what I wanted before he touched my hair. I told him and explained what I disliked about my last cut. Without any snark, he showed me the length disaparities from the last barbering and I agreed that it was a bad cut. Jim did a dry Deva cut which is what I prefer. He took his time without engaging in a lot of chit chat. That isn't to say he was aloof or unfriendly. Not at all. More that he was paying keen attention to what he was doing and making sure everything was symmetrical and to his own high personal standards. I'd much rather the stylist concentrate on giving me a stellar cut than try to entertain me, talk sports *shudders* or come off as my new best buddy. J.C. (or JayCee) took back me for a shampoo and gave the most marvelous trigger point massage of my head and tmj points as she lathered. I complimented her several times because I have never had anyone so skillfully find all the tight, sore spots in my cranium and deftly ease out all the tension. After she swathed my wet head in a towel, she gave me a brief, gentle but skilled neck, back and shoulder massage that had me sighing with pleasure. Back in the chair with Jim, he applied styling product and went to work with the diffuser, cautioning me to never apply any product directly to my scalp. What I found absolutely great was that although he is Deva trained, he did not use their awful products on my hair. He diffused, scrunched and had me shake out my hair until he was satisfied with the result. I looked in the mirror and told him honestly it was the best cut I'd had in at least 5 years. My head and scalp felt loose and light as a feather and after a year in lockdown with only one previous, bad cut, I felt like a new person. That sounds corny and cliched, but it's very true. Jim did not try to sell me any products-Deva Curl or other nor did he insist I come back for another cut in 4 weeks. He came outside to thank me again after I'd left the salon and invited me to come back inside out of the wind when I was waiting for my return Uber. I said I was enjoying the air so we just hung out and chatted a bit together. He's a man of few words and tremendous talent. I respect that. Really-what's not to like? If you need or want a precision, expert Deva cut with no silliness, no upselling, no strained, phony small talk, no feeling like you have to spend $150 on 'their' styling aides or be subject to any extraneous faffing around, make the journey to see Jim in Wynnewood at Salon Papillon. I found this salon after my other Deva salon of 2-3 years developed some odd ideas on how to conduct business - namely requiring a credit card to book an appointment. Jim did an amazing job cutting my "3c" hair! I love that he listened and didn't put any products w/ argan/moroccan oil on my head, it smells like vomit to me and that's not a fragrance I want to walk around with. I have absolutely no reason to look elsewhere for cut or color services. The professional conduct and warm welcome from this salon is everything I need and want. read more

I included a before picture when my hair was longer. It was pretty annoying to style and the ends were completely dead. The picture with a green shirt is immediately after the cut. Jim did exactly what I asked for which was add more volume and layers, about shoulder length cut.... I wanted something low maintenance and I definitely got it and I also wanted the blonde to look more sukissed. The pictures in a bright blue shirt are after a workout the next day! Because of the way he cut it, my hair has a lot of volume and it really enhances the natural wave. I no longer believe I have to spend a lot of time on styling. Ive never been to this salon before but overall loved it. Was $280 Total for balayage and cut, which IMO is a bit pricey but I love the result so you pay for what you get. read more

This salon is a hidden gem!!! I was looking for a Salon in my area that has Goldwell color. I've passed by it so many times as it's next to the old WholeFoods shopping center. After twelve years of happy haircuts with my former stylist, I needed to find a new one. I selected Papillion because of its rave online reviews. Now I understand why every review is a rave; because the salon erases any that are not five stars. My experience: I was assigned Susan as a stylist. I asked for a trim. I showed her two photos and a video of the desired cut. "Yes, yes," she said, "okay." After I settled into her chair, she whacked four inches off the back. I protested, but she went on to scalp me all around. It will be a year before this hideous trendy monstrosity grows out. I'm writing this to warn you: Do not go to Salon Papillon! Actually, it wasn't easy for me to found a stylist cutting curly hair, because when I search online they all far from me, so does Salon Papillon. Not going to lie, I'm very disappointed with my haircut. I saw the five star review comments and immediately assumed the salon would be good. However, my experience was poor. The unprofessional exterior/interior of the building was the first red flag, but given that the look of a place does not always reflect the value of service, I proceeded with my haircut - where in lies my biggest complaint. I often thought that the woman cutting my hair (Susan) rushed and had to correct her mistakes. She did not take the time to even part my hair correctly before cutting. She was also extremely rough when handling my hair and as a result there is A LOT of breakage. When I went home, I put my hair up and noticed that entire sections of hair would no longer fit in my ponytail because the hairs had broken (due to woman's mishandling of my hair). This place completely destroyed my hair and in turn, my confidence. I highly advice you go someplace else (especially considering my haircut was $80 which is about the same price as any high end spot in Philly). read more

Aury L. is a colorist miracle worker. She has turned me from a near platinum to Brunette and back again. Most recently she did color correction on my hair and it is fabulous. Her cuts are equally as good but the color is always the best. I've gone all over town- sticking for years with the same colorist and by far, she is the best. read more

I can't rave enough about Guy Sassler at Salon Papillon. After the covid lockdown with a year and half of no hair appointments and cutting my own hair, I came back to see Guy and have him work his magic. But by this time, I was all gray in the front and still dark hair in the back and basically I had no idea what to do. I didn't want a complete dye process like I had in the past- I wanted something to refresh my color without giving up my new gray. In his ever patient manner and keen listening skills, Guy guiding my thinking and my endless uncertainty and questions and I couldn't be more pleased. I loved my new color and cut and after a summer at the shore, it did exactly as he promised; I didn't go back to that growing out two tone color of the pandemic but it naturally aged into the new gray growth and the cut maintained its bounce and didn't get too long or straggly. I can't wait to go back for a new natural looking refresh for the fall and upcoming wedding season backlog. This "Guy" knows what he's doing. A true professional in his work and his manner. I'm new to Philadelphia and I was looking for a place to cut curly hair (I've got a mix of 2c-3b curls). I gave it a shot based on the reviews I saw here, and it didn't disappoint! I got a DevaCut by Jim (first one ever), and he did a lovely job! My only criticism is that he did not wait to hear what I wanted for my hair before he started cutting it. It seemed like he just turned on auto-pilot and started giving me his standard cut before I stopped him and explained what I actually wanted. I thought that was a little strange. The salon itself is very clean and open and inviting, and the staff were all so kind. It's the only haircut I've gotten as a curly girl that I didn't want to cry after, so that's a win! read more
