I booked with Michael and, when work meetings ran over, called to explain I was running late and specifically asked whether I should still come. I was told yes. No one told me that my services or pricing would change. When I arrived, I was told I could only receive a basic haircut and a few face framing highlights, a small fraction of what I had originally booked. I said that was fine, but asked what it would cost. I received roundabout answers and had to ask three separate times before finally being told I would be charged $417, the price of my original, much more extensive service. I left without receiving any service and was charged $417. But the most upsetting part was how unkind the experience was. I work a demanding job in DC and was trying to handle the situation responsibly. I called ahead, explained what happened, asked what I should do, and followed their direction to come in. Anyone working in this city knows that meetings run over. I was not asking them to ignore their policies. I was asking for basic communication and consideration. Instead, I felt like I had to repeatedly push just to get a straight answer about what I was being charged. That lack of transparency, and especially the lack of kindness, was incredibly disappointing. There are plenty of professional, transparent, and genuinely considerate salons in DC. I will be going elsewhere.

My last stylist stripped my hair of its brown low lights, the highlights were nowhere near ashy, it was just a mess. I love the balayage/lived-in look, but because my hair is so dark, I need foils rather than balayage to lift it. This is something I always have to explain to stylists and they typically tell me I'm wrong, proceed to do it anyway, and then I hate it. Not Linh! I showed him a picture of exactly what I was looking for, and he immediately said "okay, we're going to need to do foils, not balayage, because of your hair type and then will do a root smudge." I could have cried. I didn't even have to tell him and he knew; he's simply an expert who speaks the language of hair. Linh was able to restore the ashy blonde highlights AND my natural brown lowlights, which helps so much with dimension and looking more natural. He did such a fantastic job and I will go to him again and again.

There are a lot of salons but if you look at the hair photos everything just seems weird and has an early 2000s vibe. Idk why. I chose this place because the reviews were decent and it's close to my apartment. I submitted the appointment request and got matched with Shigumi. Then I looked at her reviews in yelp and it was mixed. I kept the appt because I really needed a haircut and wanted to see what the Japanese salon thing was about. Unlike other reviews I was not given tea and didn't feel the overall Japanese vibe. There are cherry blossom colored lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Was anything else Japanese? Honestly I couldn't tell. It just seemed like a salon. Everything was very organized. I saw one person get turned away because they were late for there appt. Don't be late! For reference, I once had my hair cut at the now closed immortal beloved. I did a ton of research before going for my haircut. The place looked and smelled amazing but I got the worst haircut ever. Thanks again Shigumi!

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

This salon is located on H Street and is very small so it's a little easy to miss. The vibe on the inside is very bohemian chic and everyone working there is super friendly. I can't remember the name of the woman who did my root touch up, but she did an awesome job and my color still looks great even though it was nearly a month ago that I came in! Liana did my haircut and she made my hair feel super light, soft and beautiful. I've already scheduled my follow-up appointment and can't wait to come back.

I was quoted $700 for the full appointment. Came in and on the day of my appointment, after the first bleach, they were able to lift me to a super light platinum blonde--the perfect canvas--but I could tell my hair integrity was pretty compromised after so I asked if we had to go in with bleach a second time because there was less than a quarter inch of regrowth at the time that didn't bother me and would just prefer to gloss over if possible without doing more bleach damage. Stylist said sure. So tell me why I walk out with the one color I was trying to avoid--the one color I was willing to put my hair through a full bleach out to avoid?? Brown. I've included inspo pictures, the color they lifted me to? I was devastated. I tried to give myself time to sit with it, wondering if I was just seeing things but called shortly after to express my disappointment and said I'd receive a call the next day. No call back. Instead, I had to reach back out. I then received an email that said there's nothing they can do and that instead I can shampoo it a few times and they can try to gloss it. What?? My hair is too dark at this point? Gloss doesn't lift color, and I didn't get what I paid for. I expressed my disappointment and eventually the owner called me and tried to gaslight me that it was my fault that my hair wasn't brighter because I didn't let the stylist do a second round of bleach I'm sorry--WHAT? Any stylists out there want to look at the color they lifted me to and tell me that same thing? Make it make sense. Still not sure if the owner and I were disconnected, or if she hung up on me, but I called back later to get in touch. Then I wrote an email. Gave them a whole month to respond and avoid embarrassing themselves with this review and here we are. Oh--to top it off--I was still charged for a double process bleach even though we only did a single process. Horrible customer service, horrible hair expertise, wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy.
