Initially, I had a little scheduling snafu which Brian repaired immediately and I got an appointment with Cassandra. I wanted a trim and highlight touch up. I wear a bob and have platinum highlights. Cass did a great job and worked very quickly. Cass's highlights are probably the thinnest I have ever had them which as you may know, gives great dimension to an otherwise flat blonde color. I was contemplating whether to do my highlights myself, but glad I did not attempt it. I could not get this kind of color myself. Overall, the appointment process was easy and simple and I was in and out more quickly than other salons. The vibe was warmed up by Cass and Brian's two small hypoallergenic dogs who were both sitting in my lap at one point. It was very soothing to interact with them. The appointment was overall much faster than I expected and the highlights were probably the best I have had in terms of color quality and thinness. It gives my hair a very seamless and multi dimensional look. Also, the quality of color is really good. I noticed that my bleached hair from the past would have a worrisome crunchy tangling after a shower. I got used to having drier ends and would use a lot of product to keep it moisturized and shiny. These highlights from Salon Ivy don't seem to have the same effect. No crunchiness; just lovely, shiny hair. I wanted to find high quality and reliable services and I found them here :) read more

I am very weird about getting my haircut, but I was past due a cut. My hair is wavy/curly, but the texture has changed over time so it's not as coarse anymore so it's not textured like curly hair. I would've loved this when I was 16 wishing I had straight hair. Anyways I like to keep my hair long, but past a certain length it just starts looking sad as the curls become heavy and dried out. I have lived in Anchorage for almost 3 years, but was traveling back to Chicago frequently enough that I'd just get my hair cut at the stylist I trusted there. Cue covid, and my trips back to Chicago have become less of a reality while my hair was in dire need of some TLC. It was actually an emergency as I had scheduled family photos; nothing like pressure. I turned to the Yelp gods to help me find a hair stylist, and stumbled upon salon ivy. After reading some reviews I figured I would take the leap. I made an appointment with Emily at 10am, which is when they open. They are taking covid measures, and have you call to be let in before the appointment. Emily sat me down and assessed my hair, and asked what I was looking for. I knew I'd have to get at least 4 inches cut off to get back to healthy hair, and she was able to manage expectations while taking into consideration what I wanted. She was super friendly, and easy to talk to. After a nice wash she cut my hair. Then she asked me how I wanted my hair styled. I opted to have a blow out with curls added, and I was impressed by her straightener curling skills! I left with my hair cut to a healthy length, and a cute style. Emily did a nice job. I also got some facial waxing done. The eyebrow wax was decent, but not much shaping was done. I'd probably skip that service. The upper lip wax was good, and Emily made sure all the hairs were removed. The waxing was super gentle, and barely hurt at all! I am definitely planning on becoming a regular customer at Salon Ivy for any hair cut or styling needs! So I recently gave myself a COVID cut. Yep. It was bad guys, really bad. I had a curly mullet in the back there, and a big jagged mess at the front. The enforced isolation made me do it, that, and not having to be in public. I was pretty blasé about it until the husband tells me, you've got scissor marks in your curly mullet. It made me extremely self-conscious. Well, i have trust issues with every single stylist i ever went to in Anchorage, and only ever got my hair cut when i went to visit back home in England, where my original stylist was. I just had not found anyone able to cut short hair well,during my time living in Alaska, i always ended up in tears, complaining that i looked like Julius Caesar. So i just kinda let it grow till it was a bit sort of "busted sofa springs" type of look, shoulder length, dry, split ends, frizzy, but alright if you put the diffuser on it. Till i did the dreaded COVID cut. Husband says, shall i fix the back for you, i says no "It's pretty much as bad as mansplaining, only with hair cutting, you are not getting near it" So i searched on our dear Yelp. right at the top of the list, with great reviews, and lots of them is Salon Ivy, and what stood out were the many review saying how good Brian was with short hair. So yep i was still nervous and anxious, but the state of my hair is really so bad, the only way from here is up - and i did make sure before i went, to advise that i needed him to fix a COVID cut, thereby giving him the opportunity to say go away, we don't fix COVID mistakes, we create elegant bouffant coiffures. Anyway, so i arrive, and the space is lovely, just like back home in England, and it's green which is my fave colour and Brian has got a green ivy and green man sleeve, and it's stupendous, and he is such a laugh, and he has a very hot wife too. I was immediately comfortable here. We discussed the procession of how to get from the destructive phase that my hair was currently in, to the cute and funky pixie cut that i covet (will take a little while - i was quite brutal with the scissors) So he cut off the stupid mullet, and repaired things so now I'm kind of normal looking, and fixed me all up ready for my friend's Wedding on Saturday. I could not bear to have shamed her with the hair i had. I look presentable now. I will definitely be returning, i feel confident i have found my new salon and stylist. Trusting a stylist is a very difficult and personal thing for me, so if you have gained that trust, you must be good. read more

I have visited quite a few salons in Anchorage (I will not name them, because you don't need to go to them, this is the place to be). This place is quaint and cutesy, but modern. It sits off the side of the street in a little green house. Firstly, make sure to park in the rear, not in the side parking lot (the rear parking lot in between the fences if free. If you want to pay then go ahead and go to that parking lot if your just dying too! Next, ask for Brian, although i'm sure any of the hairstylists may do wonders. I enjoyed his grace and knowledge of hair coloring. He was quite knowledgeable on how long it had been since my last two coloring's and told me some awesome info about the way the back of my hair has been colored in the past. He was not one of those stylists that takes two hours just to mix the colors and put your hair in all the tin foil, it took him less then that, I do believe my hair was ready to be washed within about an hour. Other hair places have taken up to two and a half hours for doing the same thing to my hair. Next I had one of his stylists wash my hair and it was heavenly! The scalp machine she gives is just amazing. Don't be fooled she may be tiny but she has some serious power behind those little bitty hands :) I'm not exactly sure how many different things went in my hair, i'm assuming a shampoo/conditioner and something else to seal the deal on my color I believe. I learned a lot about impressive scissors, just ask, you will gain some useful knowledge. Then it came to the drying and cut, he also used some sort of gloss or something i'm not sure what it was. I am very impressed with my hair, I myself asked Brian to just go with it and do whatever he thought would most pronounce my facial construction. He tailored my hair to my face in a way that has not been conquered. I will most definitely come here again and again, I already have my next appointment in six weeks :) Kuddos to Brian and the staff of Salon Ivy. They can do wonders and they will impress you. I was in need of a haircut super badly. My hair hadn't been cut since I was living in California! Looking through Yelp I found this salon. Great reviews and they even offered a Yelp deal! I paid $50 for $75 worth of services. Such a great deal!! I made an appointment in the morning and they were able to accommodate me over my lunch break. Brittany cut my hair and did an amazing job! My hair looked and felt great! She was so nice and very knowledgeable on which products to recommend for my hair type. They really have a great team at Salon Ivy! Everyone is so nice and very personable. Overall, I had an awesome experience. They really know how to make a girl feel like a million bucks after a salon visit. I mean, hYpOtHeTiCalLy, IF someone were to write a negative review, I'd probably be compelled to ask them: -Why did you put the term 'owner' in quotes? Pretty sure his business license is on the wall. -Can you make the distinction between "shoot down people who complain" and "explains how hair works"? If I were to put V8 tomato juice in my V8 engine and went "WTF!?" to my mechanic, I'd expect some teachable moment. Moreover, no one asks where you get your car maintained when it makes odd noises, but a new hairstyle is a walking business card... it is in the best interest of any hair dresser to fix hair dresser error and mitigate user error. Also, I've heard countless women admit that they're hair always looks its best when they leave a salon. Maybe that's because they just had a pro style it. -On what salon and service are you basing the claim that Salon Ivy overcharges? I've called around, for their level of services, I'm certain their prices are competitive. -Which women pressure other women to leave positive reviews or take a stylist's side? That's an odd warning to give. -If you were charged 60 and felt the discount was fake or a ploy to influence your tipping, what price were you quoted and how much did it actually influence your tip? -Did you consider working the problem during the days you debated posting a review? Again... that's how I'd likely respond if I'd seen an erratic negative review. read more

Emailed for an appt and within 24 hrs the receptionist called to get me in. Took only 3 days (awesome) to get in with Tia for a cut and partial highlight. Received a reminder text, which I appreciated. Absolutely loved my cut, and the partial highlights almost look full since she was pretty thorough. Coming from the lower 48, I'm used to a "real" salon vibe (upscale, offering lash tint or facial, trendy vibe) and just haven't found that here in anchorage. This salon is in a strip mall and has a small reception. Only reason not a 5 star is because of the lack of refreshments (no mini fridge) and not as up to date as salons I've been to before. This is still a great service salon. BUT that is just the setting; my stylist was amazing and the owner Brian was there as well and his customers seemed pretty happy as well. So I have always been skeptical about going to hair salons because it always ended up being a bad experience, but I decided to give Salon Ivy and chance because of the great reviews. Tia was my stylist and showed her a pic of a hair style that I wanted. She did a terrible job and it felt like she was trying to rush through the cut. It looked nothing like the picture and it was very choppy and my layers we not blended. I was so upset when I left and was about to buy a scissors myself and try to fix it. Instead I wanted to give salon ivy another chance and went in to talk to the owner, Brian. Brian was very helpful and said that he would have someone fix my hair for me. Tia was the one chosen to "fix" my hair and I regret going back in. The whole time I wanted to take the scissors from her and tell her that I would cut my own hair, but I thought she would do a better job. She screwed up my hair even more and it looks like she was trying to cut my hair into a layered bob and decided to quit halfway. So now I'm going to have to try up my hair for the rest of the year to grow back the length she took off. I'm writing this review because I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I did. I also wanted to thank Salon Ivy because this experience has made me to decide that I will gonna stick to cutting my own hair from now on. If I could I would give this place zero stars. read more

I was there for color, which was done well. However I was surprised that my stylist didn't consult with me on which shade I preferred. She also cut my bangs without my permission. Fast, friendly service! I've been able to snag an appointment here pretty easily a week ahead (I'm always last min w my schedule). So far, I've gotten several hair cuts, highlights, deep conditions, and had my brows waxed. Loved all of my cuts (by two different ladies) and the deep conditioner did wonders restoring moisture and life to my strands. I wasn't thrilled a the highlights... they just seemed a little raccoon-ish and didn't blend well (especially as it was growing out). Admittedly I'm a little picky there though. My brows took only a few mins as an add on both times and looked pretty great afterwards. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars is that on two of the three times I've been in for cuts, they are usually doubling up... so I feel like I've waited longer than I would have had I been the only one in my time slot. I love this salon! I searched for this place via Yelp, and I found it due to high star ranking. I requested my make up and hair appointment, and the salon staff seriously responded to my request quickly as promised (within 24-48 hours). The receptionist was friendly and attentive to all of my silly questions. At the end of the day, I just wanted to look great for my Luke Bryan concert, and I got it! Brenna was my hairstylist and make up artist. She is so outgoing and professional. Plus, she's hilarious.
