I've been putting off reviewing Aqua for a number of reasons. The first and most obvious reason is that it has been about a year since I've been there, and won't ever be stepping foot in the door again. However, I was a loyal client from the moment they opened their doors, circa my prom in 2003. I stopped going in 2008, for reasons I will list in detail in a bit. The ambience gets 4 stars. Obviously they are going for a sleek, Manhattan look. And it works. They've expanded the salon so they can sell overpriced makeup and jewelry in the back. Okay, great. Everything is always clean, free coffee/juice/water and for special occasions they even serve wine. Who doesn't like getting tipsy while getting a blow out?! So reader, I'm sure right now you're thinking, "Why is Nell B. giving Aqua 2 starts?" Let's start from the beginning. The moment you enter the salon you are "greeted" by one of a few rotating receptionists who have the social graces of a snail. They do not say hello. They do not ask you how are you doing. They don't even make eye contact with you until you start sighing heavily or start rummaging through your bag with vigor. Once eye contact is established, it is up to YOU to greet them and to tell them who/what/when your appointment is with. They snap their gum, check the computer and tell you to sit down. You then wait. Your appointment was at 11:30. Checking the clock you realize it is not 11:47. You have not been given a, "Oh, sorry, it'll just be a few more minutes" excuse. The aforementioned receptionists have probably forgotten about you. This is not Manhattan. This is a salon on a street that has at least 5 up-scale salons within a 2 mile radius. Have I mentioned I went to this salon for upwards of 5 years and this happened, without fail, almost every single time? So then a scantily clad shampoo girl comes to fetch you to rub your scalp with fruit scented shampoo. I can't really complain about the shampoo because I love having my head touched. Then you sheepishly walk over to your stylist's chair, who has gone out for a smoke and a cup of coffee. You sit in the chair looking like a wet rat for at least another 5 minutes. And yes, those women next to you, who are 55 but look an unconvincing 35 are judging you for having wet hair. Look! Your stylist arrived. You tell her/him what you want and get the exact opposite. Then you pay them $70+tip and swear you will never go back. Oh, you want your hair ironed? That will be extra. I once had to go back three times after a haircut because my stylist made my hair extremely uneven. THREE TIMES. Then I spent 6 months growing my hair out, too scared to have someone touch it with scissors. Sid, who is quite possibly the sweetest makeup artist ever, is a master eyebrow technician. I am sad I will never see him again, but out of principle I won't give this salon any of my business. So, you get your haircut, and maybe even an eyebrow threading. Time to pay! But, wait, where is that unfriendly receptionist?! There is no one at the desk. You are being ignored so hard they don't even want your money. So you wait, again. Remember your appointment was at 11:30? It's now 1:28 and all you had was 2 inches chopped off from your hair and a few stray hairs ripped off your face. Oh, look. Now you can finally pay, the receptionist is back! Alas, the phone rings. Multi-task? That'll be $90. read more

I'm not one to write reviews. But, I honestly felt for this salon it was worth my time. I have been twice now. The first was to get a Keratin. Anderson and Star tag teamed to do my hair. I'm peruvian Italian so I have extremely thick, long and tons of hair. They were absolutely amazing! My hair came out so shiny and smooth. They actually fixed a BOTCHED job I got done in canal st. My hair was burnt to a crisp. I went in crying explaining to them that I got a "digital perm". Anderson made some funny jokes (totally made me laugh and lightened up my horrid mood) and put me at ease that I would be good as new. I left with an ear to ear smile. Anderson also cut my hair. He.s a real artist. it was bouncy and 6 months later the cut has grown out beautifully. Of course I returned and the experience was great. Receptionist are super busy yet they are so on top of it. You get a gorgeous gown and you are served mini bagels with tea or coffee. The salon itself it so gorgeous and clean. Very modern...They seem to be always be busy. I went a second time 8 months later to do another Keratin. Of course I went with the same stylist. I will absolutely be back. It was worth every dime. I have been patronizing Aqua for almost a decade, specifically for its facials and waxing services. Ms. Karen Laruso is phenomenal and makes the experience painless and soothing. Her expertise, knowldge, and technique is outstanding. She makes waxing feel like spa massage. She is delicate, attentive, and thorough. Larry was recommended by a dear friend who is now even dearer. After a warm hello, he looked at my hair and upper half of my masked face, asked about my preferred length and got it exactly right! Beyond being a superb stylist and hair cutter, Larry is a genuinely nice guy. There's more good news. I returned 2 weeks later for a Cezanne relaxing treatment with Vinny. Off the charts FANTASTIC! I got my wedding hair trial done with Anderson. I was not pleased with the experience. The staff were nice but I find it extremely unprofessional to work on someones' hair while cutting another client's hair. The appointment from start to finish was unenjoyable. They gave me a standard wash but had his assistant blow dry my hair while he chatted with another client and cut her hair. I find this extremely displeasing and unprofessional. I am quite disappointed with the service and it was quite expensive for a lousy job. I showed him some pictures of what I wanted and he didn't even follow what I wanted or anything from the pictures. He initially gave me a hairstyle that made me look like I was a bridesmaid in my own wedding. I asked him to redo it and he ended up liking the second hair style even better. He was very fake and too over the top. By the time I left the salon my entire hair do was falling out (I did a half up, half down look). I wanted a certain type of curl and he told me he doesn't do it and it's not his style. I find this extremely rude when I am the customer paying. Additionally, it appeared that he did not make much of an effort on my hair or care about making his customers happy. Please stay away from this salon for any updo's or fancy hair styles. Larry is a fantastic hairstylist. In all the years I used Larry, he may have cut my hair shorter than I wanted- once out of perhaps 40 or more haircuts. . Larry is the rare hairstylist who does not suffer from the compulsion to chop women's hair off shorter than they wish. I used to leave Larry looking and feeling like million bucks. However, I had to leave Larry and Aqua due to it being impossible to get an appointment with Larry unless one books the next haircut at the time of one's haircut.I don't know if I will need a haircut in 8 weeks or ten weeks. and had to get my haircut around Larry's schedule.I couldn't live like that anymore. and wound up switching to Nubest after trying Anderson,who took off too much weight ,necessitating Larry to cut my hair shorter to fix Anderson's haircut. Another problem with Larry was that he kept me waiting for hours-consistetly. When I went to Nubest in recent years, I was always taken right away. I am thinking of going back to Larry IF I can get in with him without an 8 week wait. I've had 3 haircuts that have come out longer on one side, which never happened with Larry. read more

Even our friends started going to them. We've tried a few of the other salons in the neighborhood before finally trying this one, and we have never turned back. He listens and talks with you through your cut, making sure he understands your needs and gives you great service while suggesting an amazing style and great products for your hair type. I have been going to Salon Aqua since it opened years ago. I followed my colorist, stylist and nail technicians from another salon. Needless to say they are all wonderful! I wish I could give it zero stars. But the shampoo women are very sweet and nice and they deserve to be recognized for that. That is where the compliments end. Someone had recommended Perry to me for color, and I was really excited to come in and meet him. Turns out he is a major jerk and a total diva of the worst kind. He was arrogant, rude, did not do what I asked and then got very angry with me for asking him to fix the mistakes when I had been so clear at the beginning. I asked for well-blended foils, nothing streaky, and also told him I wear my hair up most of the time and so I wanted my ponytail area well blended and no bleach used on the bottom of my hair. What did I get? Skunk stripes circa 1999, bleach all over the bottom of my hair, and huge patches of skipped over or missed areas. In addition to ignoring my requests, Perry was 20 minutes late for the appointment and then disappeared for 15 plus minutes in the middle of putting in foils to go talk to a friend who had randomly stopped by (I could hear them chatting in the next room). He made me feel like I was inconveniencing him by spending a ton of money on his overprices, mediocre services. Every two minutes he was getting into other conversations, so maybe that is why he does a crappy job. He does not pay attention. Also I brought in a picture of Jennifer Aniston's hair, not because I am into her but because I was trying to show the blending and multi-dimentional character I was after since I wanted to go a little darker blonde; he then made a point of saying that he wished she has never been born because he was so tired of people wanting hair like hers and using her as a style reference. SOOO sorry for trying to show you what I like! Clearly he held that against me... It is appalling that the owner of a salon would behave as such, and I am so mad I tipped him 20% because I felt pressured to do so even though he made so many unapologetic mistakes with my hair. Plus, when I went in to get it fixed, he totally over colored it, thus erasing the good aspects of the job he did. I even sat there and kept complimenting the parts I liked, to try and be nice since it was clear he was having some kind of a tantrum over it. I wanted to be as kind as possible despite his nastiness, though clearly this was futile. I guess he showed me, messing up my hair and making it light again. It is not a big deal...that is what it was like before and while I was going for a change this time I can simply do it again in 8 weeks. It gets exhausting working hard for your money and then being given crappy service, crappy highlights, and a massive attitude to boot. Someone needs to tell Perry that his is painting hair, not curing cancer. He needs to get over himself!! read more

As a woman with a very unique hair cut it is difficult to find a hair dresser or stylist that has the confidence to cut my hair. They need to be very particular and good with a straight razor and I was fortunate enough to find Anderson. I've been going to Aqua for about 10 years now and i am NEVER disappointed! Luz is AMAZING at cuts and blowouts! Seriously, the woman is an artist and a genius! She cuts my thick curly hair like nobody's business. Yesterday was my first time ever getting color done. I called earlier that morning with a last minute request to fix some highlights I was unhappy with. I have been going to Aqua Salon since it first opened. I trek out from Brooklyn via LIRR because it's WORTH IT. The salon; beautifully designed and exceptionally clean. The receptionists are very busy (that's a good sign), but always take a moment to ask me how I'm doing. Since I don't have the time to professional color my hair as often as I need to, I often touch up at home. By the time I return to Aqua, my hair color is a complete mess. Sitting in Perry's chair is always a pleasure; he's professional and very charming. He has a great sense of style and is very current in his knowledge of hair color and product. No matter how bad my home coloring job is, Perry always works his magic transforming my hair color back to beautiful and vibrant. Anderson is my go -to for a cut, keratin treatment and blow out. He's very professional, attentive and always in a good mood. It doesn't hurt that he's also very easy on the eyes. I spend at least three hours each visit and when it's time to head back to Brooklyn, I'm not only looking good, but feeling good. I trust them all to do my hair. Lisa's blowouts last me days and look amazing. I get stopped often regarding my color! Laurie is an artist. Amen to that. Every so often you can get really good color here, although don't expect that to be the case everytime. Sometimes when you can get a good day for the colorist and not too many distractions going on (no one getting sassy about a bitchy old lady or going clubbing in south beach) they can do a good job. Other days, with said distractions, your highlights may comeout in the design of a skunk. The haircuts are very suburban and veryyy outdated. Now on to the receptionists... You might not think the receptionists could be so bad as to prevent you from going to a salon, oh but they CAN. Countless times I have stood there, once for about 25 minutes, trying to get someones attention. You come in, basically they say what do you want, then they make you wait, they forget, then a stylist gets upset that they are off schedule, then when you pay they ask again who you saw, you wait some more and on it goes. When you call they are obnxoxious on the phone. Sometimes they call to confirm appointments, sometimes they don't. The hundreds of times I've been there I don't think they've asked me how I am once. Someone needs to remind these ladies that they work at a salon. Social graces of a snail is an overstatement, snails are quiet and unassuming. I would say they have the social graces of hippopatamuses. Actually, sitting at reception all day and eating food at the front desk makes them look somewhat like hippos too. Come to think of it, they even have unusually large nostrils like hippos, maybe from all the huffing and puffing they do. I've been a loyal customer for years and everytime I leave there I ask myself why I keep do I keep going back?? I am drawing the line. It's cheaper then the city but truthfully I am ready to fork out an extra hundred dollars to be treated with some respect and feel like I am going to a salon rather then leaving feeling like I'm getting hazed in a sorority. read more
