My experience with Tyler and Salmon Valley Construction was extremely disappointing. What began as a major deck project ended with widespread workmanship problems, unfinished items, and a deck that now has to be completely dismantled and redone by another contractor.
The composite decking was installed with plugged fasteners, but plugs throughout the deck began swelling, puckering, and lifting. There were also unresolved problems with the front porch and steps, including uneven areas and safety concerns, along with trim and other details that were left unfinished or improperly completed.
What troubled me most was Tyler's response after the problems became apparent. Although he initially discussed removing and correcting the affected decking, he later changed his position and would only proceed under conditions that required me to accept his method and sign a release. When I raised legitimate concerns, his final response was simply that he disagreed and that his position remained the same.
At one point, when discussing returning to address an issue, Tyler stated that "time is money." That comment came to reflect my overall experience. I did not feel that correcting the workmanship, protecting the customer, or leaving the project properly completed was treated as the priority.
The project was ultimately left in a condition that will require substantial additional costs. Another contractor now has to dismantle and redo the entire deck, correct the front porch and steps, repair unfinished or improperly completed trim, and address the other remaining problems.
The project consumed an excessive amount of my time throughout the entire project. There was extensive communication, repeated efforts to get Tyler to return and complete the work, constant monitoring, and detailed documentation of the ongoing issues. Tyler once said, "time is money." By that standard, the amount of my own time spent managing this entire fiasco may well have exceeded the cost of the deck itself.
Integrity is demonstrated by how a contractor responds when something goes wrong. In my experience, Tyler appeared more focused on limiting his responsibility and protecting his time and money than on standing behind the completed project. Based on the workmanship, unresolved safety concerns, unfinished details, and the way the matter was handled afterward, I cannot recommend Salmon Valley Construction. read more
