Spartan (1952). the Badger which has long since been converted for hauling cars and trucks and people is the last operational coal fired passenger steam ship on the lakes. the ferry can haul up to 600 people and 180 vehicles each trip. in 2016 the Badger was designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of Interior with a much unintended irony...

Nice place to waste some time fishing from the bank. We used to catch zillions of smelt from the antique bridge. The bridge is still there; but the smelt are pretty much gone. Now days the river holds trout, salmon, northern pike, catfish and smallmouth bass, not to mention bullheads. Find this quiet little park and wet a fishhook. Take a nap...relax.

As it is downstream from the Clark Mill dam, the river here is mostly rapids. The total area of this scenic park is 84 acres. The park itself is divided into two distinct landscape areas: an upland area on which most of the development has occurred and a lower area along the river, which will generally remain in its natural state. The river yields trout fishing; but catch and release. I've hunted for morels in the spring. It's been partially ruined with a Frisbee golf course, which no one ever seems to use. There are two bathrooms (more like glorified outhouses) near the main parking lot. I'm not optimistic that Yelp will list this nice park due to past experiences with my first to reviews. Try to find my review of the English Lake County park; but I'm hopeful. It's about 8 miles west of Manitowoc off of Highway JJ. If you are looking for a nice quiet place to fish, hike or forage, it would behoove you to check this place out.

Lesson learned; October is a time when the waterfall is not flowing so we could see the stones and…read morerocks which are fascinating, but no flowing water to enjoy. We started on the trail but quickly lost it and so we headed back after a short hike. But the view of the falls and woods is beautiful so we enjoyed ourselves anyway. I guess we just got our timing wrong. As we got back to the car we found ourselves parked among many trucks with bow hunters. They were friendly and heading deeper into the property but we felt it was time to leave since we did not have any blaze orange on and our dogs were with us. I imagine spring is a better time to visit and I will check further before we visit again. There is no parking or entry fee, but there is a box for donations as you feel are appropriate.

We got to a crowded parking lot, and parked in one of the few empty spots. The walk to to waterfall overlook is easy if not a bit muddy. This is a pretty waterfall about twenty feet high. There are trails that take you around and down to the bottom of the falls. Nice spot to visit and take pictures. There are no restrooms or picnic areas, just the falls. I have to add social commentary here. We met about thirty people walking to and from the falls. The twenty something's walked by with their eyes firmly on the ground. The forty something's looked up and said hello back. The sixty somethings made eye contact, smiled and said a pleasant hello. Generational differences were apparent. Bottom line, this is a very pretty spot for a quick visit. Be respectful of the private property.

A small, lakeside park just north of the marina. there is an ample parking lot and a very nice…read morebathroom facility at the north end. A couple of picnic spots and a small but nice beach area. The real attraction here is the walk on the north Manitowoc jetty. On your way to the lighthouse you will come upon a water impoundment that can be rife with shore birds. A little further on is the Paws and Play dog park. Beyond is the walk to the lighthouse. If it is windy and the surf is up you might skip the lighthouse walk because you'll get wet or worse. All in all a nice area to spend a couple of hours. Bring your binoculars and snacks. On a sunny day this can be a great day in the making. On a cold, rainy day, not so much. People in Manitowoc are usually friendly. Take the time to chat, you might make a new friend.
