Update** So I've decided that Sakura is not a bad place to eat unless you want any sort of raw fish item. The hot foods are good. I gave their rolls another chance yesterday and was disappointed again. First of all they taste fishy, Sushi should not taste fishy. Second of all the rolls are very small and half of the inside is filled with some sort of crunchy filler material so you really only get a very small amount of the fish. Maybe it's the quality of fish they have available to them. This town is very out of the way. The sashimi suffers from the same slightly turned fishy taste that make the rolls nothing to enjoy. Bottom line is if you want hibachi, noodles, soup or any hot dish don't hesitate to come here. If you want good sushi head to Samurai in Lawton or my favorite, Gogo Sushi Express in Moore. read more

Food was pretty decent for Altus, OK. C'mon....I don't see any oceans near by. The fish tastes fresh and the rolls were pretty good. The people suck though. I was half ass greeted by the hostess and she didn't even speak until I said hi. I saw my server twice. Once for my food order, and once for my bill. I ordered for pick-up and asked the lady how long it would take. She said 15 minutes. I showed up in 18 minutes and the food was there. I think they heard the responses of the slow service and fixed it. The food was good. It's probably the 2nd or 3rd best restaurant in Altus. But really, there's only about four good restaurants in town. Probably only two 4-stars, a couple 3-stars, and the rest are lower. If it's consistent and the service gets better, I could upgrade it to 4-star. read more

Under new management! Lulu is genuinely concerned with the well-being of this restaurant. She asked our opinion on how to get some business back now that she's making improvements. It was my first time eating here so I don't know how it used to be but I heard the service was aweful. Not so tonight! Food came out quickly and it was fresh! I got the crab Rangoon and three of their regular rolls and they were delicious. Went with four of my friends and they loved it too! My husband and I had a wonderful meal at Sakura! I ordered the Tiger Roll and he got the Tomo Roll. They order their fish fresh from Hawaii and it was very flavorful. We're both from California and love raw sushi, but never expected to find such great quality in Altus! Couldn't recommend this place highly enough! read more

Definitely worth going! For a small town that is nowhere close to the ocean, and sitting in the middle of the bible belt, the sushi was awesome. I have definitely had better sushi from all around the world but i was sure surprised at the quality and quanity that this establishment offers. The restaurant itself was was very clean, it has a nice assortment of decorations that scream japanese, there is a small sushi bar to sit at, and a habachi grill that shares the seating. Service quick and very nice, never did i have to wait for a refill. I will definitly be coming back. read more

Sakura used to be a 50/50 place for me. Sometimes it was good, sometimes really bad. Since it has been under new management, the quality of the food has exceedingly improved. I highly recommend the sashimi deluxe, the sushi & sashimi combo, or a bento box. read more

This place is by far the absolute best hibachi grill and sushi restaurant I have been to. That says a lot considering I have spent the last 7 years in San Antonio and have been to some great places there. I was blown away by the service and the food. New management bla bla bla. Covered the trashed blinds with ugly purple curtains..blinds are still there , still trashed. Food is a little better, they added soup to the Soba part of the menu and as long as they don't over heat the noodles... because they did once...last month but last night it was ok.. but no carrots...they had carrots last month but soggy noodles. Soooo. Soup was cooked perfect except for the carrots, well they technically weren't cooked...because there weren't any carrots. Just onions...onion soup basically with fish and egg. Which were cooked perfect. Steak was perfectamoo, Sushi perfectaraw, tea perfectoLiquada. Price to high, but I knew that going in..and it was my idea so I cant complain...Mama wanted 1 dollar cheese burgers... are they still one dollar? I think that price went up to right? Like .39 cents or something. But I said no lets eat healthier than that. So ya 5 dollars is not healthy but 65 dollars is, right. Not for the bank account but for the booty see so you can break it down like that. Money equals healthy. You'll have to decipher that one on your own I'm done. Actually I just remembered that I paid 17 dollars at the burger place down the street last month for two burgers fries and drink. That's outrageous so money sometimes does not mean healthy if you get stupid. Oh and the 25 dollar "Specialty" Pizzas at Dominoes! Isnt that a load of crap!! For 1 pizza! We have been patrons since before new management took over and I have noticed the service has improved immensely. The staff is more courteous and turn around for to go orders has decreased. I would like to see them put more soy sauce in the to go bags because they only give ONE for a huge multi-item order. We always have to ask for 4-5 more. The fried race used to be a bit bland and the chicken always had this congealed coating on it but since new ownership, the overall taste and quality has been better. We haven't dined inside the restaurant in a while but we get take out often so I'll update my review once we have experienced this! I'm really impressed with the updates new management has put in place. Initially I thought it was just a few new light fixtures and new paint on the walls. However, as my visit progressed I began to realize the service aspect of my experience was a complete 180 turn around. The staff is attentive, polite, and fast. There's also new menu items! Every time we go here we have a great experience. The service is pleasant and helpful and the location is clean. We normally sit at a booth and order the summer rolls and sushi. I don't know too much about sushi but to me it tastes fantastic! I always get the chicken teriyaki bento box or the dinner and I've yet to be disappointed in the taste. The nagel roll is also very yummy. Their fried rice is TO DIE FOR, I could probably order that as my meal and be perfectly content. The area for improvement is the servers, especially during lunch. It's hard to order and talk to someone who doesn't speak a lick of English. I have been there multiple times in the past few months and if you say anything that isn't specifically on the menu he just blankly stares at you until another server walks by that can translate. Like another reviewer said, you can't compare this to a sushi bar in a coastal food mecca. But for Altus, it ain't bad. Located in a former KFC, it's been a sushi restaurant for about four years, and under the current ownership for about nine months. They're very nice and friendly people, with excellent customer service skills. The hibachi cook did an entertaining little kung fu routine for us. The food was simple and fresh. For the hibachi, which is a bit pricey, the portions of noodles and rice were much more generous than the portions of salmon, chicken or veggies. But it's great that these folks were willing to trek out to Altus to bring a bit of Japanese cuisine to such a remote locale (even though they're not actually Japanese - they're Chinese - but, shhh, don't tell anyone). read more

I'm a bit perplexed by some of the reviews here. I am from California and I just moved here. I have high sushi standards, but am giving Sakura 5 stars given this is a tiny town in the middle of nowhere and their sushi is pretty good with that caveat in mind. Just think, you can't even go to a grocery store and get quality meat and produce here, so how can you possibly stand up to places that operate in food Meccas? All of the workers have always been very friendly and I have received excellent service. Please support this restaurant so we can continue to have ethnic options in this food desert. read more

The show was great with the grill master! He was funny and put on a good show including sake out of a squirt bottle. I ordered hibachi chicken though, took 2 bites of the chicken, and that was it. I was pleasantly surprised with this experience. Considering its locale you never quite know what to expect...and the fact it looks like it was an Arby's or something previously. Came on a Friday at 7, expecting to commit some time to the experience. 7:30 rolls around and I'm writing this review about to leave. Service was excellent, food was pretty good. Philadelphia roll was very good, and freshly made. Went with the usual teriyaki steak and fried rice. A staple menu item as such can only truly be used to evaluate one place from another. The steak was cooked perfectly as I requested (medium rare naturally) and was laid on a bed of fried onions and 5 pieces of tiny greens (could have been more veggies). Maybe they are afraid of their meat quality but it was drenched in teriyaki to the point I was scraping it off to see if I could taste the meat...which had a lot of flavor! Only complaints other than that is that my food came out so fast I didn't have time to finish my salad and soup before my roll was out, then had 1 piece and my dinner was out. Needed a little better pacing. Served by an American...we are in middle of nowhere OK so what can you expect I guess. Definitely worth coming to. read more

Salad dressing was so watery you could drink the remainder of it at the end. Miso soup lacked flavor. Now the fun part... Literally everything was doused in soy sauce and served. A good indicator you're using too much is probably when you go to shovel it to someone's plate and it's dripping all over the table. Also, the "shrimp sauce" which is usually a cure-all at any other hibachi was terrible here. The final straw was paying $20+ dollars for this. read more

I really wanted to write a review of Sakura, as I had an outstanding experience there. The waiter was incredibly friendly and helpful, and also had a great sense of humor. He shook our hands to thank us for tips as well. I've eaten at many fancy restaurants, but he might be my favorite waiter of all time. No joke. Who would've thought? Furthermore, the chef was the best hibachi chef I've ever had, and I've been to a LOT of hibachi joints. The food was very good as well. I don't know how a restaurant this amazing exists in Altus of all places, but I can only assume it's due to a wrinkle in the space-time continuum. Suffice it to say I have never been more pleasantly surprised by a dining experience. If you're TDY at Altus, eat here often! If God ever wants to punish me enough to PCS me to Altus, I sure hope this place is still in business. read more
