We came here for lunch. Now anyone who reads my reviews, will know we are sushi lovers. Been all over the world and eaten it. This place is quite delicious. I wanted to do 4 1/2 stars but that feature doesn't exist. We had tuna tetaki, vegi tempura, Boston roll, tuna maki roll, salmon roll and chirashi. It was delicious and fresh. My only complaint is with the rice that came with the chirashi. It had an almost smokey burnt taste to it. Friendly staff. Swift with the food. 4 pages of different rolls. This is my go-to place in NE Ohio. I still haven't found a place that tops this one. The fish is always fresh, considering it's Ohio. Service is great, staff is friendly. My husband and I were regulars here while we were still living in Akron. We come home once/twice a year now and they still remember us. We like to get either the sushi dinner regular (comes with three regular rolls + 2 soups and salads) and order some specialty rolls along with it. Our favorite specialty rolls: Fire Maki: spicy salmon with tempura crunchie on the inside topped with salmon, wasabi fish roe, a thin slice of lemon and topped with a drizzle of sriracha sauce. My husband was the first to try it and when I heard about what was in the roll, I thought it was weird...I mean, lemon? But after one bite, I was floored. This roll is life changing. I would come here just for the Fire Maki alone! BPP: salmon, tuna & hamachi (yellowtail) with tempura crunchies topped with avocado, black sesame seeds, eel sauce and sriracha sauce. Sweet 'n spicy and delicious. This is my second favorite roll. Magic Stone: I always forget what is in this...but on top there is some lightly seared fish. It's pressed into square pieces instead of rolled. Amazing. Carmine: spicy scallops and fish cake? Yes please. Their regular rolls are very good, too, along with their sashimi and nigiri. Some items on the menu are creative and some sound so appealing, it make you want to give it a try. The place is small but the atmosphere makes up for it. Also you can get good deals on some rolls every Monday as they have Specials going on. Service is wonderful and the food is great value compared to other Japanese restaurants. My husband loves this place! So much that the hostess and our server recognize him yet this was my first time visiting. I really enjoyed the clean & cozy atmosphere , including the amazing koi fish tank. However, this is seriously not the place for any picky eater. I was a tiny bit disappointed by their hot tea, instead of the expected traditional green or even jasmine whatever I was served was very floral and overpowering. And being the jerk that I am, the only thing on the menu slightly appealing was their won ton soup. I actually don't eat the meat in won ton soup (long story) but while I was dissecting my noodles , I couldn't help but appreciate how fresh the meat looked and clear the broth was. It had an okay taste but I've had better. My husbands sushi was absolutely beautiful! Since I don't eat sushi I can't really say more other than to suggest you read his review (Christopher C.) since he goes there ALL the time, lol. The food is good. I'll give them that. That's where all the stars come from. However, the service was hella awkward. Some how overly-attentive and alienating at the same time. The layout was awkward as well. I wouldn't choose to go here again, but if someone were to take me there, at least the food would be worth it. Stand out favorites include the sweet potato and tofu rolls (sans eel sauce). Their veggy yaki noodle dish is also quite a tasty option for those wanting something hot or different from the sushi menu. Prices are slightly above middle ground. This place is truly fantastic! Lots of variety on the rolls and the prices range from just under 6 bucks for your Maki (beginner) rolls to 15 for the more adventuresome. Guys... take your date here, fill her full of sushi and saki... then see how much better your night unfolds. (For some of you it might take more saki than others, but you can thank me later.) The service is great (except for that one creepy server.... and you know who you are.) Can get crowded on Friday or Saturday nights, but they have specials throughout the week that really make you want to visit on another day anyway. read more

Sakura is reputed to be the best sushi restaurant in Akron. I can't comment on other sushi places around here, but I would not go out of my way to eat here if you aren't nearby. While decent overall, a few notable flaws hold it back. My main problem was that the sushi was ugly in appearance. I've seen the sushi I make at home, and the sushi prepared by (most) restaurants, and there's a clear difference. Unfortunately, Sakura's sushi resembles the former more than the latter. The rolls were misshapen, lumpy, and uneven (some parts much smaller than others). To their credit, the taste was pretty good. But if you get fresh ingredients and buy a $2 rolling mat, you could make something similar at home. A restaurant should be able to do better, and I'm not sure this one does. My girlfriend also commented that the yellowtail (hamachi) sashimi was not impressive. read more

I've been a fan of Sakura since I started eating sushi about 10 years ago. Now that I've traveled a bit and managed to sample some of the best sushi around, Sakura still holds up as a very good establishment for the price, quality, and atmosphere. The restaurant is situated, as many things are situated in Akron, in part of a strip mall next to an obnoxious family-style restaurant, formerly a steak house. Sakura itself is a kind of minimalist modern Asian-inspired place but not obnoxious or pretentious. They just set up a nice little seating area with places to sit and eat, and make it comfortable for everyone. The menu contains a lot of mainstays in therms of maki rolls, special rolls, sashimi, bento boxes and so on, and there are a number of house specials included within. Every week, they have an additional board of new or special creations, as well. The quality of the ingredients is good and the presentation is quite nice. I've never had a bad meal at Sakura, though occasionally the rolls can be a little too salty... whether the salt is in the rice or the sauces, I'm not sure, but it doesn't detract from the taste too much. It could simply have been my selections last time that led to the salt-overload. Last, the service is normally quite good and very friendly. They not only tolerate but encourage me and my friends in our sake-bomb habit. I think, because of us, they actually added that to the menu. read more

I'll keep this one pretty short and sweet. GREAT place to go if you want to load up on sushi for dinner. They had many combo options where you got to pick so many rolls and got soup and salad with it. My husband and I had 4 rolls from one of these combo choices and added on a pricier deluxe roll, too. The price was definitely right for some high quality sushi. My husband thought there'd be some hibachi type chicken or steak meal options but there weren't. They did have some different noodle meals and such, some teriyaki I believe, but don't think this is like a Wasabi because the focus is definitely more on sushi. read more

The best sushi I have ever had, hands down, is Sakura in little Fairlawn, OH. Never once have we ever left disappointed. Perfect, delicious rolls. Huge selections. You HAVE to order the Torched Dragon Roll. You will thank me :) The only thing that could be better about this place would be for them to hire friendly and smiling hostesses instead of the stuck up brats who have their noses in the air, and act like every customer who walks into the door is bothering them. This is my go-to sushi place, and has been for around two years now. I have never been disappointed by Sakura. The food is always amazing, very fresh, and the menu is huge! My favorites are the Butterfly Roll and the Spicy Salad. The spicy salad makes me smile on the inside! The wait staff is always very attentive and helpful, which makes up for any language barriers that you may experience. The owner is very nice and always on hand...I love that he knows who i am when i walk in, but it may be all the tattoos i have, lol. My partner and I stopped in here for lunch after not having visited for several years. They have added a small patio dining area, great for when the weather permits. Their lunch selections were very good - everything from sushi rolls, bento boxes to lunch portions for the dinner entrees from their kitchen. I ordered their Pork Shogayaki lunch special which was served with a small salad (ginger dressing) and soup. The portion they gave me was very generous and quite tasty. I also tried their Tako Salad (Octupus) which was also very good. Our server informed us that they had a special that day which was 1/2 off their sushi rolls so my partner ordered a Spicy Tuna Roll and an Eel Roll. Both were delicious and tasted fresh. When the bill came, we found that they charged us full price for the Eel Roll so we asked the server why. He went to check and came back to tell us that unfortunately, they removed the Eel Roll from the "specials". We were not pleased but did not make a big deal out of it. Overall, I would give their food 4 stars but the service only 2 stars, so I averaged it out and gave them 3 in this review. I will go back and try other items on the menu and perhaps we might even get a better server next time. read more

My wife and I have been loyal patrons of Sakura since they opened. Similar to a previous review from Andrew D, we have had sushi at all the places where you "have to try", and throughout all of our travels throughout the region, even to New York City, Sakura is still the best. I always tell people the number one thing I look for in a quality sushi restaurant is consistency. I have had wonderful sushi at several places, but rarely two trips in a row. Sakura is wonderful every time. We have had everything on the menu, literally. But a few of our favorites are: From the sushi menu: Uni (hard to find good Uni, its typically unbelievable here) Sushi Cake Stoplight Lovers Cake Any of their spicy rolls, particularly spicy yellowtail From the Hot menu: I get their beef negamaki usually which is awesome, but occasionally ive had the chicken teryaki which is good Appetizers: Their age-tofu is impossible to beat spicy salad. I'm originally from Akron, and whenever I come home, the first place I go is Sakura. I have been coming here with my family for over five years, and though things have changed (mostly for the better), it is still some of the best sushi I have ever had. Ever. I've eaten a lot of sushi in my life, and all over the place (New York, San Francisco, London, and Paris come to mind). Little old Sakura in little old Akron, Ohio is definitely on par with (if not better) than some of the sushi in these bigger, more cosmopolitan cities. Start with the seaweed salad! It's light, and perfectly salty, with a few sesame seeds tossed on top. The miso soup is also a favorite of my family's. After you've gotten your appetizers out of the way, just start ordering what sounds good to you. It probably is good (and so FRESH!). My go-to's are spicy crab rolls--which, on Mondays, are 50% off. Off the special roll menu, I always (literally. always) order the Eel Dragon Roll and the Red Dragon Roll. I definitely recommend those. What's stopping me from writing a 5 star review? I've never tried the non-sushi items offered at Sakura, and I haven't heard the best opinions of them, either. But what is perhaps my biggest gripe with Sakura is that, as they've gotten more and more popular and expanded the space and operations, they've lost a lot of authenticity and that personal touch that they once had. I know it's extremely difficult to maintain that feel once a restaurant starts to grow and wants to serve as many people as possible, and Sakura just hasn't found its new groove yet. read more

As far as hot food is concerned, the Yaki Udon with Shrimp and the Japanese Fried Rice are incredibly good. The service here has been spot on for my wife, son and I and have never heard anyone else complain either. It can at times get busy, but we've never had a wait to get a table. The restaurant was remodeled last year which makes it nice and roomy. We heard there was good, fresh sushi in Akron and this is the place. I would agree with that. The quality of the sushi is comparable to House of Hunan, a couple miles down Market Street. But Sakura would be my pick for sushi between the two for one simple reason - the maki roll offering is much more creative and interesting. There were nice, small touches as well, like providing a small salt shaker alongside the edamame instead of salting it in advance. I would have expected the miso soup to be a little better - not bad but very average. The staff was very good but the ambiance was just a little "flat", although the kids will enjoy the prominent fish tank. All in all, the best in Akron for sushi in my experience. read more

I went to this restaurant based on Yelp reviews. When I arrived this week, I asked if the fish was wild caught or farm raised. The owners were asked and did not know. Opps. Tragic for someone in the food industry. I then ordered miso soup (how wrong could one go with that) and tempura. The tempura was not fried in panko, which is what I am used to at Japanese restaurants. (This must not be actual Japanese?) We left. Server was very nice and inquisitive. Tiny little facade in a typically Ohioan strip mall, but inside the courteous and helpful staff are waiting to lovingly massage your tastebuds to ecstasy. We got 3 rolls, one from the special board and two from the regular menu. We branched out on the special, New Moon, we aren't the most adventurous eaters and it was well worth it. So good. We ate at the sushi bar so we got to watch them whip (wrap) it up right in front of us, we also scored some sort of crab/squid salad amuse bouche that was lovely.
