Overall: Convenient location, good sushi rice, lots of fish for the price. Fish isn't the best quality and can sometimes taste old, but somehow they make it work. Food: I've been going here about once a month for the past year to get my Chirashi on. Sakura's sushi rice is what sets it apart from the other sushi joints in the area: (1) it's very well-seasoned with rice vinegar, and (2) they serve enough so that I can have a spoonful of sushi rice with each piece of fish without running out. The sushi rice easily trumps my other 2 favorite local sushi joints, Bigeye and Sushi Asia Gourmet. As for the fish, you get a LOT compared to other sushi joints for the same price (especially with the lunch portion). The downside is that the fish often tastes old; I've been unable to eat my tuna sashimi the past couple times without covering it in ginger and dunking it in soy sauce. I think Bigeye and Sushi Asia Gourmet still win out on freshness of fish. The sushi rolls themselves are good, but sometimes can be a bit heavy-handed with the frying and sauce. Overall, I think Sushi Asia Gourmet has the most put-together sushi rolls. Hence, why I only come here for the Chirashi. I've tried some of their non-sushi items (Tofu Teriyaki) but they are not worth mentioning. Their menu clearly revolves around their sushi. 4- I met with a bunch of Akron friends for Maki Monday at Sakura because I hadn't been to the restaurant in years. While I was pleasantly surprised by the fish (I remember when the tuna at Sakura tasted like freezer burn), I just can't give truly high marks to a sushi restaurant that uses the wrong type of rice. That's really all it takes for good sushi--fresh fish and quality short-grain rice. Short-grain's not just stickier, but also retains more moisture. So, although I like the idea of downing cups of sake with my sushi, I don't want to do it because a maki roll's catching in my throat--this, and the fact, that our server knew next to nothing about sake, and the selection was kind of pitiful. So sorry to my friend Eric, still have to go with Pacific East in Coventry (even though they overkill their sushi with sauce and fish) as the best sushi in NEO. For the love of god, I wish all Japanese restaurants served perfect Japanese rice like Sakura. This should be the absolute minimum when opening an Asian restaurant. We came in for lunch on a Saturday and had their tempura, which was delicious. If you love eggplant, this is the first place that served it with the vegetable tempura. Service was courteous, friendly, and prompt. My only criticism is the water has a strange smell and after taste that affected the hot tea. While in Akron, I Yelp'd to find a place to eat nearby my hotel. Sakura came up so I gave it a shot. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered a large Sapporo and the Sushi Deluxe dinner, which has 9 pieces of chef's-choice sushi, tuna roll, miso soup, and salad, ($19.95). The sushi chef handed me a small dish with shredded crab and cucumber in it and it was excellent and most appreciated! Soon after that, the salad and soup came out together. A couple of minutes later, the main plate with sushi came out, so I had all these plates in front of me and I hadn't finished any of them. Ideally, it would've been great to hold back on the sushi plate until the appetizers were done, but that's okay. The sushi was very good! I was surprised at how large the slices of fish were! Tuna (2), Salmon (2), Yellowtail, Albacore, Red Snapper, Shrimp, Eel, and a Tuna roll. With the exception of the Red Snapper, which was quite tough, everything was really good. Our server was awesome and was fast to get our drinks and appetizer. We had Gyoza as an appetizer. Was a little cold but tasty. My daughter had chicken fried rice . I tried some and it had a very good flavor. I had the Katsu Don. Pork cutlet was a little on tough side. The entree was piping hot and tasted pretty good. The hostess proceeded to tell me that there was a "problem" with the kitchen, and that sushi would take over an hour if ordered. Usually I love this place but our server Tiffany made a night out awful. I got the sashimi appetizer as my dinner. The menu says an assortment of sashimi which I'm usually fine with since I love almost all fish. They gave me salmon, tuna, and white tuna. The white tuna was awful and I asked for it to be switched out. Tiffany said no, typically they do not do that. They would only switch it out if I asked for them to exclude something, but I had never tried white tuna so I didnt know I didnt like it. I placed a to-go order (lunch special) and I misheard the host (I have 50% hearing loss). Rather than being cool and just speaking up a little louder, it seemed like she went out of her way to be a snob about it. Our other interactions from then on we're just as awkward. My husband has been visiting Sakura for over 15 years, since it was a tiny hole in the wall with one sushi chef, the sushi bar, and two small tables. When we met it had expanded a little, but it was still small and intimate, Ken was the manager (he was the best), and the sushi chef's were super personable. They knew their customers by name and they knew who was a regular. Unfortunately it's nothing like that anymore, sakura has become the go to spot for the hipsters and uppity Fairlawn wives who like to bitch at the sushi chef's that they're regulars and pay good money and they want another scoop of spicy crab salad (not joking, this happened the last time I was there). At this point, we continue to go because their sushi is better than anyone else's in the area, but the cuts have gotten smaller, while the portions of rice are bigger to act as filler. read more

It is an established fact that I am a Fish Freak... I love me some sushi. When I am in San Francisco I eat a hearty sashimi dinner at least once a week. I like to think that I have a reasonably well developed palate when it comes to sushi and sashimi. My friends know this. It is for this reason that the past several times that I have been home to visit, my BFF Tony and my "he came along with the BFF" (herein abbreviated as HCAWTBFF) Andy have refused to take me to their favorite sushi place in Akron (Sakura). Because, as Tony puts it, I am a "sushi snob" and they were afraid that I would be condescending in comparing it to the outstanding sushi they presume I eat on a daily basis in California. I assured them that I would not be as such, but let it drop on the past few visits (which were shorter in nature) as I knew I would be back in SF soon enough when I could have cheap and fresh fish out the wazzoo. I have now been in Ohio for... um... eighteen days. After about day ten I began craving sushi so much that at night I was dreaming of toro and hamachi and sake and other fishy delights... in fact my dream of eating mass amounts of sushi was so vivid that I woke up one morning with drool upon my pillow. I have been going through some serious sushi withdrawal. I needed fish and I needed it fast... so when an opportunity arose to go out to dinner with my BFF, HCAWTBFF and their better halves this evening, I INSISTED that they introduce me to their favorite sushi joint, swearing on a stack of bibles that I wouldn't be snotty or condescending about it. That I would take it for what it is: Good sushi in the Midwest. My expectations were low, I had thoughts of store quality pre-packaged sushi roaming in my head... you just never know. I was very very very pleasantly surprised. I ordered a sashimi and nigiri combination dinner - it came with soup and salad - priced $23.99. Pretty good price, considering the location... a little more pricey than I wanted, but sometimes ya gotta pay to get your fish on. The soup was a little fishy for my taste. The salad was a typical iceberg lettuce salad with some sort of sesame dressing on it. What really delighted me was the sashimi and nigiri platter. It was beautifully plated and I was pleased to see that I had a very large portion of both sashimi (15 pieces of assorted fish) and nigiri (10 pieces.) The slices of fish were very thick, too. Included were tai, toro, maguro, hamachi, akagai, sake and two fishes which I couldn't identify by taste (though one was really fishy - I didn't like it too much). The maguro was obviously frozen, not fresh (you can tell if tuna has been frozen because it tastes watery and mealy)... However, this was made up for by the OUTSTANDING quality of the toro - it was so good I almost cried - tasted like butter. The sake and akagai were also outstanding... in fact I'd say that the quality of the toro, sake and akagai at Sakura rivaled that of the quality of the same fishes at some of the better West Coast sushi joints I've been a patron at over the years. The menu also has a great selection of rolls, including a couple of really inventive ones using non-traditional ingredients (such as Frosted Flakes - I know, eww - but, the HCAWTBFF swears that it's a delicacy.) I didn't try any rolls this evening, but the others did and what they had looked yummy. My only objection is that they seem to use smoked sake in a lot of their rolls - I prefer fresh - if I wanted smoked salmon I'd just eat some Lox, you know? A little pricey, yes, but so worth it for the Fish Freak stuck in the Midwest. I left Sakura with my tummy full and my endorphins flowing from the yum-yumness of good sushi. I is a happy Kate.
