This is my new fave sushi place in the area! The sushi is so fresh. I ordered take out and waited inside. All items are made by order which is why it takes slightly longer. They have 1 sushi chef who does it all. If you sit at the bar counter, you can watch him make the sushi in action. It only took 30 mins for my takeout order (&I ordered as a walk in) but he was also finishing 4-5 other tickets. Sushi will always take longer then reg hot food so come in with the expectation that you sushi is made to order and can take a bit longer. You can't rush greatness. The whole technique takes time. Overall, loved the staff! They were super nice while I waited. The food was amazing! I even had left overs. Would recommend a combo to try it all. But really, just try it all! read more

OK, first off, sushi katsu does not have katsu. (Imagine if spaghetti warehouse told you they have no spaghetti on the menu.) Yes, even the katsu dinner on the menu is not katsu- it's a California roll and seaweed salad? No, there's no description on the online menu. Second, why did it take 45 minutes to make 3 rolls of sushi and an order of dumplings? It's always dead and the service is always slow. Being rude to potential costumers who walk in because you are busy and feeling overwhelmed is a great way to assure that a business doesn't have to worry about being busy in the future. They are busy tonight so cannot seat people. Understandable. It is nice to see businesses making money after the rough years we have all had. However they offer carry out so we asked about this since the problem seems to be the availability of a table in this small restaurant, but received a terse response. The best sushi in the Akron/Fairlawn area. You can tell they take care in what they make. The large chirashi is well thought-out and is amazing. You can tell how good a Japanese restaurant is by how well they do that dish and how it's composed. I've never been disappointed in anything I've ordered. I've only had the chance to enjoy takeout here, but this cute one-room sushi bar is quickly becoming one of my favorite sushi places in Akron. They have a number of daily specials, and this past visit I was able to enjoy the Thursday Katsu dinner special which includes seaweed salad, rice, a California roll, tuna sashimi, and a quart of miso soup. For $10.50, this deal really can't be beat. I'm not a huge fan of California rolls, but theirs was quite tasty. The tuna sashimi was delicious as well as all the other accompaniments! Walked in at 8:08 to be greeted by an extremely rude employee that just said "No" and proceeded to exclaim that they can't seat us because they "close in 45 minutes". They close at 9pm. I've been to dozens of sushi restaurants in Northeast, Ohio, and I have to say that Sushi Katsu stands out as the best, most authentic sushi. They easily have the best spicy tuna roll around here. It's actually spicy and you can really taste the freshness of the tuna. It's not the biggest, fanciest sushi restaurant, but the food is genuinely special. The staff is friendly as well. As the last reviewer noted, service can be slow...but it's totally worth it. Staff is light, but super kind and helpful. I've been traveling back and forth to Japan for over a decade, and can say that the quality here is the best you will find in the area. Most importantly, the fish is fresh and well prepared. This is the reason to come here. The only cooked entree I have had here was the unagi Don bowl, which was also prepared well. My teens also enjoyed the ramen and gyoza. Best sushi in Ohio. Small places like this are such a wonderful find. Drive around to the back of the building and you'll find a small, charming patio and equally small indoor seating. The staff is lovely, ingredients are fresh, sushi rice is cooked and portioned properly, and the flavor combinations let the ingredients shine through. Prices are good. This is definitely a case of you get what you pay for because considering the ingredients and skill that go into really good sushi, it shouldn't be cheap. Don't try to rush your meal or pickup order. Went here the other day to grab some sushi with two of my sisters and friend. Was disappointed when I walked in and no one was there to greet us or said anything to us when we walked in. After about 5 minutes, someone came by and told us we can choose our seat. We chose to sit outside but literally got forgotten about. We waited 20 minutes to be asked what we wanted to drink. We ended up moving back inside because we literally were forgotten about. Mind you, this is a very small restaurant so it's not like they were packed or dealing with so many customers. Not good at all. Not sure what the reviews are talking about. Not only does the service suck (we literally waited SO long to even get our tofu appetizer) but the food wasn't even good. We got a seafood teriyaki plate and there was literally no teriyaki on it and you can tell they keep it cold and just heat it up when it's ordered. It all was really hard and rubbery, like it was heated up in a microwave. Not sure what we waited so long for. The food was so white washed and disappointing. Their sweet potato roll was made with little sweet potato fries. The guy making the sushi was literally sipping on a beer while making the food. I'm just so confused. I will probably get torched for my views but it must be said. First and foremost, rolls are NOT the true art form of sushi. It's just Americans have made it that way. Everyone has NetFlix, go watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Rolls are a slap in a master sushi chefs face. Adding cream cheese to EVERY roll is humiliating. I've been to Sushi Katsu numerous times and have always been satisfied. I don't do rolls as its the biggest waste of money, anywhere. I've been in the sushi mix around here and I have taken notice how he chooses his cuts of fish if at all possible. I bet no one recalls the days when fish was shipped here and had to be picked up at the airport that day. I will admit that the wait is long but it is a one man show. This isn't fast food people. When is hand made stuff ever been cheap and fast? The Akron area will never have a authentic sushi spot because of its customer base. This is probably as close as we will get to one around here. After an hour wait of no food, we just asked for our food to go and were told our food was being worked on. We didn't get our food until about 30 minutes after that (including appetizers, which they ran out of one that we ordered but didn't inform us until we asked for it all to be packed to go). It's a small unassuming place w/outdated old decor from the 90's but hey, that just adds to its Akron kitchyness! The quality of the sushi is top notch and from my experience the best you'll find in the greater Akron area, if not N.E. Ohio in general. The owner Tony is the chef and seems like one of the last old-school Japanese-born (Sapporo to be exact) and trained sushi chefs left around. Tony's very friendly and welcoming to all, and likes to chat people up who sit at the bar, while he works. What can I say about Sushi Katsu to, most effectively, relay my utmost respect for both Chef Tony and his restaurant? I will do my best to both entice and entertain you. I've had sushi from NYC to LA. I am what you might call a sushi snob, though I prefer to call myself a purist. Fish on rice...that is the name of the game. The simplicity is perfection. Chef Tony is a classically trained sushi itamae. He is dedicated to his art and consistently delivers perfectly prepared sushi. Katsu delivers fresh fish, perfect rice, and great service. The tuna is delicious, the salmon soft, and the tamago is spectacular. I will not pretend to say Sushi Katsu is the best in the world - you are in Akron, Ohio after all - but Katsu is the purest, most delightful sushi you will get as far as NYC. His prices are on point and fair. His service is exceptional. You will go into Katsu and feel comfortable. If you like sushi, sit at the bar and watch the Chef prepare for you. That is right - at Katsu, the head chef is making your sushi, the guy right from Japan. How much more authentic can you get? A few final tips: he uses wasabi, as it is supposed to be a part of the experience. If you don't like it, ask for no wasabi. Chef Tony is busy and he concentrates on the experience - he isn't cold, he is just focused. Do not expect to be gibber-gabbing with the chef at Sushi Katsu. Finally, take a risk and order sushi. Katsu will deliver the best sushi experience in Akron, in Ohio, and in this region you will find anywhere at a very affordable price. - Update: forgot to address the bad review about "muscles". Well, you ordered mussels, not muscles, unless the muscle you ordered was actually muscle, from say fish, but instead the order was incidentally mussels. Unfortunately, mussels have no muscle, so the wait on muscle was in vain as the muscles required for mussels to muster anything meaningful is, perhaps, mundane. Maybe instead of being pretentious you could have gauge your experience on quality versus reminiscing the negative. Ignore his review, Sushi Katsu is prime. read more

What I liked about this restaurant is how nice Chef Tony is. He really offers a welcoming environment to the restaurant. You can tell that many of his customers he knows personally. You can also tell that he uses very fresh fish. What I find as a downside is that the rolls are pretty unremarkable. I really admire creativity when it comes to sushi and the sushi at Sushi Katsu was lacking. The portions are also barely satisfying. A hole in the wall place located behind a strip mall. We had the pleasure of dinning at the sushi bar. The sushi rolls that we got were all very tasty and indulgent. My favorite was the black diamond. The monster roll we got was good but I could have done without the cream cheese. Next time we come I would like to try some of the more traditional offerings like the sushi combos. The service is on the slower side but this is understandable because it is a one man operation in the kitchen. Tony the chef is very detail oriented and takes his time to make every order. Price wise things were very reasonable with specialty roles coming in at around 10 dollars each. If you are going to tip the sushi chef remember to have a little extra cash as the tips on the card go to the severs. Overall this was an excellent sushi experience and on the short list for my favorite sushi places in Ohio. 4.5/5 read more
