This place is awesome! My husband and I have been many times and it is always great. Tuna ahi poke roll is a must!!! Also their hot green tea is very very good too. My company had won an award and decided to have a celebratory dinner here for about 25-30 people and it was one of the best meals of my life! They hit it out of the park and everyone had a great time. They started us off with some appetizers we had two kinds of dumplings (pork and veggie) that were both so tasty---edemame and crab rangoons (yum) then each table got a massive sushi boat---we lucked out that some people didn't come (their loss) so we had some extra food---but then we had entrees brought out for the tables---plates of pad Thai, Mongolian beef (amazing) and a chicken dish with rice---we were all so full we had to take dessert home---highly recommend! Nice people great service every time! read more

This restaurant is absolutely fantastic. Best sushi and thai tea I've had in a long time, great menu as well!

The pad thai was very good. I asked for extra vegetables and it came loaded with a nice array of veggies. I was very pleased

Wow! My friend and I were the only ones here for lunch this past weekend!? I was nervous that the food was not going to be good, I was confused about why there was no one here, maybe it was the location. I started of by ordering the chicken wonton soup. Delicious. Our waiter was very nice and helpful, he answered all our questions. I did not realize when I was ordering that the lunch special was only for weekdays, I am not sure if Friday was included in the weekend, as it was a Saturday. Instead, I ordered the Buy One Get One Sunrise sushi and the Rainbow roll. I have typically ordered the Rainbow when ordering sushi; at Sake Bomb, I had to say it was tasty. It wasn't anything spectacular but it wasn't bad at all. The fish did look fresh. The Sunrise roll was much better though. Yum, it was kinda sweet. I want to give four stars, but for the price of $23, I would have to give it three. Also, our food did take a long time to be brought out, don't forget we were the only people there mid day on the weekend... read more

The fish on my Sushi was not fresh. I sent it back. No substitute offered. It was still on my bill. I paid it, but it will be the last $ they get from me. Don't waste your money. They tried to tell me that it was my taste buds. I have been eating sushi for two decades and NEVER had an experience like this one. read more

Soooo yummy. Sake bomb had great service and super delicious & fresh food. They also had good Covid precautions as we were far away from all other tables yet were still able to eat indoors. I will be going back! read more

What can I say! My experience with this establishment has always been a step above positive. The food is spectacular! The customer service staff as well as the Owners are very intimate with the clientele. I highly recommend Sake Bomb. If you're wanting terrific sushi as well as other amazing succulent dishes. You will not be disappointed! read more

Sitting here waiting to pay ok our check. Hmmm...the food this time was probably the best out of our four trips to this establishment. The wait staff subpar. The last two visits the waiter can do it answer a simple question about items on the menu or what is in them. Last time it was about a component in a sushi roll, this time about what they used to spice the spicy edamame. Then the hammer drops on the bill. Ordered was four rolls and two pieces of nigiri. The special says guy one role get one free. That's not true, the three cheapest pieces is what you get free. So both pieces of nigiri and one roll. That's fine of you tell me to front but misleading is not cool. Most important LEARN YOUR MENU. read more

Poor service by the wait staff and the place was empty. Drinks were not good but my wife did enjoy her sushi. I ordered a curry dish but it was full of ginger something that was not mentioned on the menu and too much for me to even touch it. Not once did the Waiter even inquire why I did not touch my meal or offer any refills on drinks. read more

I'm from CT so the BOGO sushi rolls is new to me, we don't have that at home, so that's a good start. Got a Captain and Coke, more like gasoline and ice...heavy pours at the bar (that's not a complaint). Ordered 4 rolls, got the Angry Dragon roll, Land and Sea roll, Oyster roll and Samu roll. The rolls were large and pretty great overall, the Oyster roll however was quite bland and lacking in any flavor. Very nice inside, we ate at the bar so I never saw the dining room. Perhaps one of the cleanest restaurant bathrooms ever. Cool place with good sushi... read more

Sake Bomb - Asian Fusion Near Me - Durham, North Carolina

Sake Bomb is your neighbor Asian spot when you have a craving for sushi but don't feel like "dressing up". Their main focus is sushi but they also offer dishes from all over Asian. Durham has countless places that offer sushi with none of them really wowing me (M sushi is the only exception). Keeping my standards low my husband and I shared two rolls and two entrees. The sushi was on par for the area, with the seafood being fresh and rolled well but not a ton of flavor. The same could be said for both our entrees. I asked our waitress for something to add spice and she brought me out some thai chilies and sriracha which helped things immensely. The ingredients were fresh, the portions were spot on for the price but they just lacked some flavor. The food didn't wow me but the service blew me away. May was our server and I can't remember the last time I was treated so well. She offered recommendations, knew the menu well and checked on us several times. Take note that if you're a sports fan they offer a great bar area where you can dine and still catch the local game. The food is average but I plan on returning because of the service, location, and atmosphere but I will be asking for more of those thai chilies. I would recommend them for a casual date night but don't expect gourmet. read more

I have never been so pissed off about a restaurant experience in my life. We arrived at 8pm and didn't get our food until almost 10pm. We were all so famished that we started eating but were just appalled at the utter lackluster quality of the food. It was pure shit. The quality was shit. The service was shit. The whole experience was shit. And THEN the icing on the cake was that the BOGO deal was a rip off and our server was the worst server I've ever met in my life. I've worked as a server for years and I usually understand that everyone has a bad day or something but our server, Lee, was horrible. He only checked up on us once in the ~2 hour long wait for our food and it was only because we were all glaring at him. He was incompetent and kept chatting with his server friends instead of doing his one job. I've never spent such a long time at a place I absolutely hated. Service sucked dick. I'm never coming to Sake Bomb again and I do not recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their sanity. read more

Definitely one of the better sushi restaurants in the area. BOGO sushi rolls, drink specials that include the namesake sake bomb (get ready for a mess if you take the shot the "adventurous" way!), a spacious dining room and a separate bar area, and average-to-good service. It's a favorite spot for me and my girlfriends to get together on nights out as the sushi boats are easily shared and it's affordable enough for us to splurge a bit. I will note the sashimi portions, in my opinion, are a titch on the small side compared to other restaurants in the area, but it's not a big enough difference to be a turn off. read more

The only thing I've had here was sushi and it's AWESOME. I had to call in for it one day since I had back to back meetings and I've never done sushi take out before but the staff was awesome. My boyfriend and I used to go to Shiki at least 2-3 times a month--this has replaced it as our new sushi spot! We didn't feel like braving another 45 minute wait like the last time we went to Shiki on a Friday night, so after some Yelp research, decided to try Sake Bomb last night and loved it. As everyone else has said, the decor is such a nice surprise given its location in a low-end strip mall. Chandeliers hanging in the entryway, two bars, really well done. There is a bar/lounge area on the left side of the host stand and a main dining room + another bar to the right. We were seated immediately by the hostess, who was very polite and professional, and our waiter was fantastic. He clearly took pride in his job and pride in the restaurant/its food. He explained his background in Asian cuisine and made suggestions when they were solicited, but wasn't pushy and let us enjoy our meal. It would seem the staff is very well trained and passionate about their work. We ordered the drink special, a sake bomb "kit" which was a Sapporo and small sake, enough for 4 sake bombs (2 each). We also ordered a large hot sake afterwards (we love hot sake and it's cold outside) which was delicious and perfectly heated. Sometimes it's served too hot for me. Enough about the alcohol, the food was fantastic. We usually order a small spring roll appetizer at Shiki and 6 rolls and take about half the rolls home. Somehow, we ate an order of summer rolls AND 6 rolls at Sake Bomb...partially because it was so good we couldn't stop, but also because there was less rice. The filling/rice ratio was much better than Shiki's, and the sushi was carefully put together, not sloppy. So I guess you could say the rolls are smaller at Sake Bomb, but I just think they have less rice. The tempura fry on the Fusion roll was perfectly done--at Shiki that roll is my favorite Bagel roll and it's hit or miss, but usually bulky and sloppily fried. Also, get the summer rolls. They come with a delicious, slightly spicy peanut sauce and are delicious. All rolls were delicious but my favorites were the Fusion and the Tar Heel roll. We also got Vegas, Volcano, Tai, and I can't remember the name of the last one, but I don't think you can go wrong. Their menu is huge and I'm sure filled with tons of delicious surprises, can't wait to go back! Our bill was pretty much the same as it always is at Shiki for drinks, appetizer, and 6 rolls ($70) for reference. read more

I made our second trip to Sake Bomb last night. Don't judge the restaurant by its location in an old Kmart strip center! The restaurant is quite large and has a nice, almost seemingly elegant interior. There is a large dining room and sushi bar on the right side of the hostess stand, and you'll find additional seating and the bar on the left side. Similar to other popular sushi restaurants in the area, Saki offers BOGO sushi, and it QUITE delicious. The first we ate here, I was still eating sushi, and I can testify that it was extremely fresh; the wasabi was spicy, and it offered very creative specialty rolls. During last night's dinner, I started with the seaweed salad, which wasn't quite as flavorful as I have tasted elsewhere. My fiance gave the miso soup a thumbs up (it was an especially cold and rainy night in Durham, so soup seemed extra fitting). I tried the Vietnamese Lemongrass with tofu. My first few bites were more bland than I anticipated, but I quickly uncovered the delicious sauce hiding underneath the vegetables, which turned this dish from ok to yeah! (Corny, I know.) It was a LARGE amount of food, so I eagerly boxed up the other half for leftovers today. My fiance tried the Green Monster roll (Spicy yellow tail, tuna and cucumber topped with wasabi tobiko and wasabi sauce), and he truly enjoyed them (and yes, they were QUITE spicy!) as well as the Sunset roll (Crab, cucumber, avocado topped with salmon and thinly sliced lemon) - he commented that it had a nice crunch and was refreshing, especially after downing the Green Monster. Other highlights to note: they have a great local beer selection. Some of the more usual suspects (Foothills Hoppyum) but some ones we don't see a lot outside of certain locations (Mystery Brewing). Great service and fairly easy to carry on a conversation even in a full dining room on a Friday night. If you haven't checked it out (and even if you cling on to Shiki), give it a try! read more

Great service and good tasting food. The only disappointment they have was their Lobster Roll was so big I have to cut it in half to eat it. Sushi should be bite size, not so big you have to cut it to eat it. read more

I may remember the restaurant experience as a "Sodium Bomb", because my mouth and body unfortunately paid the price of excess sodium after the meal. The decor and service were fine, but the food was disappointing, especially in terms of quality. The prices were also too high for what was served, but it probably doesn't matter, as the food would have disappointed me at any price. I was intrigued by the extensive menu, but when the food was so mediocre, how many dishes they had didn't seem to really matter. I didn't try any sushi due to caution, and after experiencing the quality of the other foods, I know I made the right choice. It probably goes without saying that I could not understand how this place got rated so high. Maybe it is because of the unfortunate reality that good Asian restaurants are just extremely hard to find in Durham. read more

Totally unexpected awesomeness. Never would have thought a chic, classy, and delicious Asian restaurant was lurking near a sweepstakes place and an Auto Zone and behind the Target. Sushi, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese all done very well, with decent prices and great specials. This is a real gem. Don't let the exterior fool you! read more

This is my go to sushi place because of how close it is to my place. We've had multiple celebrations at this restaurant and each time, they were able to seat all of us and accommodated us well. They do BOGO sushi which is nice, but I prefer their entrees more than their sushi/rolls. I ordered their drunken noodles and it was big and pretty tasty, but their rolls weren't very memorable to me. We like this place because they have good service and fairly fast service depending on when you come in. The restaurant is pretty big and can hold a lot of people which we like as well; we've never had to wait to get a table. read more

Not bad! As others have mentioned, don't let the unappealing exterior fool you--they've done a great job of interior decorating and the atmosphere is pretty swank for a strip mall! Service on a Friday night was incredibly fast, drinks were STRONG (maybe a little too much so, but I'll take it!), and prices were reasonable with the buy-one-get-one. They did have some sashimi specials but we played it safe and stuck to the americanized specialty rolls (many of which involved tempura, mayo, and cream cheese, which is not really my thing, but your results may vary) The rolls were huge (as in, impossible to eat in one bite, since they had about 20 ingredients each) and tasty. A neighboring table got some kind of awesome-looking enormous bowl of soup noodles which gave me entree-envy, so I've made a mental note to check that out next time. Just as an FYI for the BOGO they just take the cheapest ones off your tab rather than "pairs" of similarly-priced rolls. read more

I love this place! My husband and I decided we needed to check out this new sushi place and boy, we were in for a surprise! The location was not the kind you would find a place of this caliber. The outside sign is a bit humble but when you enter the doors, the two chandeliers in the hallway made you feel like you are coming in to a restaurant you have to have reservations for. The host was very friendly and seated us right away. The ambiance of the bar on the left side caught my eyes so we chose to be seated there. To the right of the restaurant is where the separate sushi bar is located, in which I will more likely sit on my next visit. At the bar we were very nicely welcomed by the bartender informing us of the daily specials. That night everything was 50% off the extensive sushi menu. The cocktails we ordered were very well made. Pretty much the way I would make at home, with plenty of liquor to soothe the mind after a stressful work day. I will definitely be back soon! read more

Hands down my favorite place to grab Asian-anywhere. I can tell they use quality cuts of meat for their dishes.

Nice atmosphere but not a good place to go if you are on a time crunch. I met a family member here for dinner because we thought we would try sake bomb (we usually go to shiki)....but damn do I wish we had stuck with what we knew. It took over ten min for someone to bring us water and take our order. Seriously? It took 45 minutes to get our sushi. Just for a table of two. I had a babysitter at home and that sucked for me because I had to gobble down my sushi & couldn't enjoy it. Quality wise- I still prefer shiki. I thought the meats were not flavorful and the land and sea sushi roll was terrrrible. I am no sushi expert but I have a sense of meat quality and the seared beef just tasted awful and slimy. This place would be so much better with more servers - at least for busy nights...I can see how it could be dead in there since it's not in the best location. read more

The main issue with this restaurant was slow service based on what they perceived to be an especially busy night, which it clearly was visibly not. It took 15 minutes to even take our drink order or receive water. Our mediocre sushi order took another 30 minutes and was unimpressive. I wished this pan-asian restaurant would've fulfilled my sushi cravings more but the service just killed it for me. Those who have had better sushi would agree. read more

I love Sake Bomb. Don't be fooled by the outside...it looks incredibly shady. Very nice ambiance inside, though. Love the BOGO sushi and I have enjoyed the Saketini twice now. The service is impeccable. My husband and I have a "regular" server...can't remember his name right now but he is a younger, bald Asian man. I don't know what happened since the last time we were here - maybe the change in staff? Either way I was really disappointed in every aspect of this visit and will not be returning. First of all, the drinks were okay but nowhere near what I am accustomed to as a has-been-regular-until-now. The gin and lemongrass was mostly melted ice flavored and the chocolate martini was mostly a depressing chocolate milk in a lukewarm glass. The waiter was extremely slow, and while I can understand being too busy to check up on guests if there was another person in there but we were quite literally the only customers in the entire restaurant. It should never take half an hour to order food in an empty restaurant!!! And all throughout our visit it seemed more like we were bothering him than actually being serviced professionally or otherwise. I almost wanted to apologize for being a bother but realized that was inappropriate considering the circumstances. Next, the sushi was merely "eh" and whatever as opposed to being amazing and wonderful like it used to be. Lastly. The entree. Food should be the best part considering this is supposed to be a restaurant, but no. It was the absolute worst. The meat was burnt to the point of being crispy on the edges and the sauce was much to salty and the vegetables were mangled and almost unrecognizeable for being as burnt and disgusting as the meat. I was shocked as the last time it was amazing and wonderful. Just seems that nothing lasts forever, especially good restaurants or servers. Hiring the wrong people reflects greatly on the restaurant - and this time it happened to Sake Bomb. Time to start googling how to make sushi at home - anything but being forced to dine here. read more
