This review is overdue. My favorite local lunch spot, their bowls are the best, and so convenient. You can add what you want and the portions are so big I usually eat the second half the next day. We recently had them cater our kid's graduation party and everyone raved about the food. In fact, they loved it so much I had to order more, and they were quick and accommodating. The portion sizes were a bit unbalanced. For example, not enough of the meat and rice, but a ton of hummus and lettuce. We seriously had lettuce for a couple weeks. Lastly, I'm docking 1 star (and honestly, that's generous) because the lady who works there (owner perhaps?) is an absolute pill. She literally makes me feel uncomfortable just walking in and supporting her business. And it's not a one-off, it's every single time. This has nothing to do with the fact that the workers speak very little English. They were not able to explain why "Keto Bowl" is more expensive than the regular bowl. Note: you can ask for all the ingredients in Keto Bowls and pay less. So, I asked if I could just switch to regular bowl midway. Man, they were so sour, they made Kombucha taste and smell sweet. My husband was not finished ordering when the older lady just left his bowl on the counter. Very unpleasant experience. We will stick with SAJJ in San Mateo. Sometimes, you just have to try something again and again until you develop a taste for it. I had never been a huge fan of some Mediterranean dishes, Hummus, Falafel, Baba Ghanoush were dishes that I usually passed on. Then some friends introduced me to a "new" Mediterranean restaurant near our house that was fantastic. So, now I'm trying to expand my knowledge and experience. My mom has frequent doctor's appointments nearby SAJJ, so we decided to give them a try. We had our dog with us, so we needed to be seated outside. Looking on yelp and using the filter to find outdoor seating, we saw the ratings were decent. Driving up, we saw that they had two outdoor tables but we only needed one for the three of us plus the dog. We looked over the menu and I placed the order using the QR Code. When I got to the end of the transaction, I needed to have my wife go inside and let them know that our order was to be eaten on premises and not packaged to go. When the food was ready, everything was delivered to our table. Here's what we got: Drinks - Diet Coke, Strawberry Lemonade, Water (my mom always wants hot water, but they apparently don't serve it?). The Strawberry Lemonade was a bit on the sweet side but it was nice and refreshing. Diet Coke is Diet Coke. Lentil Soup - 5 - This comes free with every combination order. It was a bit on the thin side but it was very flavorful. Something I could drink every night during winter. Pomegranate Chicken Plate - 3 - All of the accompaniments were good but the Chicken itself did not have any discernable pomegranate flavor. Chicken Shawarma Plate - 3 - Some of the chicken appeared to be undercooked as it was pink. Steak Shawarma Plate - 3 - I found the meat to be over cooked and over seasoned. I think that had we had simply skipped the meats, we would have been happier overall. Bottom line, would we come here again? Yes, but veggy only. You know, there are countless aspects of pre-COVID life that I really miss, but one of the things that I surprisingly miss the most are some of the eateries by my old office. Obviously, I can still go back to the ones that are still around, but it's different making a point of it versus just walking the few blocks over there. What's even more surprising is that of the bunch, one of the places I miss the most is Sajj! Don't get me wrong - I've always been a fan, but I never visited them as often as some of my other regular spots because the line was always so long. However, now that I've discovered this location with nary a wait? It's like getting to relive those experiences but without the hassle! Funny enough, even though I've always been curious about their wraps, pita breads, and salad bowls, I've never ordered anything at Sajj other than their rice bowls. No particular reason why, other than it's the easiest to reheat if I ever have leftovers. However, being at a new location, it felt appropriate to also try try something different. So, in this case, I opted to get a CHICKEN SHWAFEL SALAD BOWL (Chicken Shwarma and Falafel) with pretty much all of the toppings - Mixed Greens, Tzatziki, Hummus, Garlic Spread, Sumac Cauliflower, Tomato Cucumber Mix, Cabbage, Garbanzo Beans, Diced Pickles, Diced Beets, Sumac Onions, Cherry Peppers, and Lemon Olive Oil Dressing. With such a long list of components, it's no wonder how, all together, this ends up being a fairly hefty salad - and that's before even mentioning the three Falafels and the seemingly generous amount of Chicken Shwarma underneath it all. Other than how I should've asked for less of the garlic spread (very garlicky), everything blended together really well. All of the veggies were fresh (other than the pickles because pickles), the Falafels stayed crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and the Chicken Shwarma was quite flavorful. I wish I had asked for some tahini to be drizzled on as well, but it's not like my salad didn't have enough going on already. Regardless of whether you get a wrap, pita bread, salad bowl, or a rice bowl, though, the absolute best part of just about any meal at Sajj is their Lentil Soup. I'm not sure what they put into it, but I wouldn't be shocked if crack was one of the ingredients. Which is kind of crazy, because I don't remember it tasting this good at the Sajj by my old office. Although, maybe I just enjoyed it that much more this time because I knew my entire afternoon wasn't going to be spent sitting in a bunch of meetings that could've been an email instead. I was lucky enough to win a gift card to SAJJ years ago when we lived in San Francisco. I loved it then and still do. I haven't been in years since there aren't any locations near us. However, we were looking to get lunch with my mother-in-law before dropping her off at SFO and spotted that there was a SAJJ nearby. Ooo! It was a good excuse to return! We had a great meal here. One of the first things I spotted was that if you download the app, you get $5 off on your first visit. Score! So, I downloaded the app and it was quick and easy. I didn't need to order in the app either which was great. I love the build-it counter style, so I chose a bowl with the steak/lamb shawafel (includes bonus falafel!). I chose a 50/50 blend of rice and salad, and pretty much all of the toppings and sauces! I loved the cauliflower topping in my bowl. Plus, I came away with a big hunk of a bowl, which left me lunch for the following day! I also ordered the Tamarind drink which was good, but too sweet. I wish it was more sour/tangy like I had at Shawarmaji in Oakland. Oh well... I checked in on Yelp and I saw there was a free check-in offer! Wow! I rarely see those these days, so that was pretty exciting! The check-in offer was for free pita chips and dip. I chose the hummus because our son loves hummus. The pita chips were really good; they were obviously so much better than ones you get in a bag at a super market. The entrees also come with a free side of soup! I had gotten a falafel wrap with garlic sauce and hummus, along with a mix of different veggies. I also got a lentil soup to try things out. I'd say I wanted more from the garlic sauce but everything was packaged well. I liked the chutney and spicy sauce to hedge things up. The falafel was a tad dry but gelled with the two sauces. Take advantage of their student meal it comes with an Entree Bowl, Lentil soup or Pita chips, and a drink. There's either a lot of people eating in or nobody there, so I just recommend always asking for to go. They don't always play music, but I really love when they do! My order: Falafel Rice Bowl(pictured w more details) - They have the crispiest and freshest falafels out there, it's so good but if I'm extra hungry I get chicken and falafel as an add on(2). For an entree bowl, they will give you about 4 of them. One time there was only 3 left at the front so the nice lady fried up fresh ones for me :,) Lentil soup - Usually complimentary but also comes in the Student Meal, so delicious and flavorful it's my favorite. Tamarind Juice - If you like tamarind, this is a must because it's exactly that nice, sweet, and tartness of a real tamarind. It was our first time eating here, so we weren't too familiar with the ordering process. The worker seemed to not be pleased with my wife not understanding how ordering works. I would echo a few of the reviews here that mention her being passive aggressive. She couldn't muster a thank you or you're welcome. There's pretty much three protein options (steak, chicken, falafel, or a mix). Toppings such as cherry peppers, mixed greens, sauces, were free. Things like feta cheese, avocado, french fries will run a little extra. Lentil soup is free with any order. So we opted for the steak rice bowls with various toppings. Sauces felts very oily here and overpowered the flavor and texture of the bowls so if you are planning to try, maybe ask them to take it easy. Steak was dry and textbook mushy all at the same time. For being the main, it was definitely sad to bite into. Lentil soup seemed like it made in a blender so no whole pieces. There's a couple of seats indoor and outdoor. The format of the restaurant is very similar to Chipotle. Overall, there was nothing standout or craveable about this place in terms of mediterranean flavor. I was also not a fan of the cooking method of the steak, it's just dying in its container. Service is not the friendliest. We practically got all the toppings + sauces, and it does come with a free lentil soup. I will say that 1 bowl was enough for us; 1 bowl might be too much for 1 person but you'll have leftovers! Our total came out to be around ~20-23 dollars? It was about that range. The steak shawarma was delicious! It's more on the lean side, so you shouldn't expect much chew at all. Everything else piled on top gave us so much spice, flavor, citrus.. you name it! Definitely a party in your mouth. Everything tastes exactly how I remembered it. Everything is SO flavorful and pairs so well with each other. Like another Yelper said, it's basically like a Mediterranean Chipotle. They also offer different wraps and falafels. My issue with this place is: Service and portion: the lady making your bowl/plate is rude. She does not want to be there. Today, I ordered the chicken shawarma bowl (half rice/half salad) and she gave me the smallest scoop of rice and the smallest nibble of salad. All other toppings were also the smallest amount she was willing to give. Additionally, I ordered a kids chicken bowl for my daughter, and again, she barely gave any chicken and rice. Our items ended up being very bland and we had to add more seasoning. These items were not worth $15 and $9, respectively.
