We did another tasting at Aamodt apple farm, next door to the hard cider is a winery. They had a sip and painted event in the next room. Otherwise yoga in the morning. Walk up to the counter and the ladies will tell you about the wines they offer and flights available. We decided to try all 3, whites, rose, and red. Variety of sweet, dry, and tart. There was this raspberry chocolate jam they just came out with, it was delicious. Paired perfectly with the port wine. Definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. read more

Stopped here on our way home from a day in Stillwater July 2024. The employee was SUPER kind and friendly and took his time to explain the local wines to create our sampler. I absolutely love the Saint Croix Vineyard! My family is part of their wine club and we stop by this location every 3-4 months to enjoy a glass of wine and pick up our new bottles. The staff is always so friendly and will explain their new selections or what they have on site for anyone who needs help ordering. The space is a little small in the winter, but during the summer months and select weekends they have more seating outside for people to enjoy. They also throw events throughout the summer! Saint Croix Vineyards is a must! We had a glass of the Itasca (a dryer white) and the Marechal Foch (a dryer red) which were both really good. I had seen on the website that they give free tours occasionally so we got a tour of the vineyard from Paul (he was one of two men that started Saint Croix Vineyards). He was very knowledgeable and giving of his time on a Sunday afternoon. He took us through the entire production process of the wine and we got to see the behind the scenes. Our pubpass brought us here to try Thor's Hard Cider but when I saw how lovely the area was and how much I enjoyed the hard cider, I wanted to also try a Minnesota wine. The staff in the store was very helpful. I indicated how much I liked the cider and she steered me toward the roses. I was able to taste a couple versions and, surprisingly to me, chose the fruitier over the dryer version. Beautiful area, of course, we were there on the most perfect late summer day which only added to the beauty. Can't wait to open my new bottle of wine. read more

I have visited Saint Croix Vineyards many times since they opened back in the 90s, so they've had a long-held spot in Midwestern winemaking. Unfortunately over the years, they've seemingly succumb to the "Wal-Mart paradox" of customer service -- whereas you can skimp on an engaging, positive customer experience because you've got an ample amount of people coming in and out from visiting the orchard to make up for it. The atmosphere is very cafeteria-style in the tasting room, with a pour-and-get-out-of-here attitude from their hosts. It really lacks the warmth and personal touch that one might come to expect from a vineyard with such a strong brand name. Newcomers and visitors that might want to learn a bit about the history of the winery or the nuances of Midwestern grape-growing will find little opportunity to do so or to find any sort of connection with the hosts or winemakers. It's really unfortunate because it wasn't always like this; I'd say I noticed this shift start to occur maybe 5-6 years ago. I visited this past weekend and the ladies there were short, curt, and seemingly disinterested in showing any sort of warmth or resonance with what they're doing or the brand they're trying to sell which is a huge missed opportunity on the winery's end. Unfortunately, the experience feels very transactional there now with little in the way of connection-building to the history and people behind the wines. It's worth noting that the pricing of their wines tends to be higher than the market average for Midwestern wineries. While quality often comes at a premium, it's important that this is accompanied by an experience that justifies the cost. I really hope they improve their service and try to be more active with how they're selling their brand, but I've sort of accepted that those days are long behind them. read more

Secondly, thank you for the kindness of the majority of your staff. The volunteerism also felt with local charity(ies) present; a nice feeling of community support here. The nice combination of Winery and Apple Orchard is why. In my days of old touring European wineries we maya tour of this winery? Maybe. My children wanted to visit for "the tour of the winery" and enjoy these local wines by tasting. Perhaps we just missed it. Wine tasting- yes. Wine store- yes. Vineyard and tour- missed it. Perhaps we shall visit again to learn more. Yes, again, the total concept of community support visually noticed. Apple Orchard medium appreciation without a cup of coffee available to accompany a donut. It's a Pandemic thing perhaps? Willing to keep an open mind. The wine expert loudly informed me of the word "gris" as a blah blah blah blah. Patience and kindness goes a long way. For sure, the fact my circle in the world of Sommeliers as an understudy of The California School of Wines spanned over two decades. Surely understand a layman's knowledge of wine is shallow. A great place for a Fall weekend excursion! But quite busy. They offer a wide range things in the same location, e.g. apple orchard, vineyard, wine, cider, apples, hotdogs, popcorns, children's playground, and pet friendly. A great place to visit whether you are coming with your family, friends, dates or just by yourself. They are so cool about letting visitors walking around their orchard and vineyard! I can appreciate my wine and cider more after walking around!!! Cider-wise, ginger frizz is my favorite. I did a wine flight - apple wine is similar to cider; rose is thick, more texture than being refreshing and crisp; Frontenac port has a strong raspberry taste. St. Croix Vinyards saved our summer. We discovered this gem early on in the summer and by the send the secret was out. They do such an amazing job of setting up lots of tables all over their grounds. If they tables are taken you can bring your own blanket and chairs. I'd always assumed their wines were sweet, but they have some good dry ones as well. We fell in love with the Marquette and the Marquette Rose this summer. So awesome to be able to get a tasting, a glass, or a bottle. We often brought our own food but they also had snacks for purchase. The other major plus the was the playground equipment. We could sip our wine while the littles ran free. Our kids would often ask to go to the winery because of all the fun they had! It was also nice to have Thors Cider near by in case someone in the group wanted a cider instead of wine. I dont know if they are open in winter but we will find a way to keep supporting this amazing place! read more

The setting is beautiful and the wine was nice but the service my friend received was horrid. After waiting in line for the wine by the glass tent a male server called for next so my friend stepped over his way. He looked right through her. No acknowledgment of her at all. He then pointed at the blonde behind us in line then pointed her to the side of the tent/table area to serve her. We both looked at him in shock but he would not look our way at all. My friend is African American. We shared our encounter with a different employee who was upset this occurred. Gave my friend a free glass of wine and was apologetic. Stated he'd share what we said with the manager. The winery has a lot to offer and is clearly popular judging by the number of people visiting. They need to work on how they treat all their customers, not just the blondes. read more

The vineyard is great. Lots of activities and good wine but I was sadden to run into a guy at the wine line that completely wouldn't serve me. I was in line with a friend and he pointed to the blonde behind me and directed her to the side to help her. keep in mind I'm African American and with my friend who is white and she was the one that pointed out how bad his service was. I was upset because this was my birthday so I kindly mentioned it to another guy. He apologized and said he would speak to the manager. He poured me a free glass. He saved the experience. It's really a nice place, but I would fire the guy in the red hat. he was not a good person. Maybe I will return but if I don't I would still recommend it just avoid the one guy. read more

Saint Croix Vineyards is a little gem of a site. There is so much to do here, you might as well make it a day trip from the cities. The winery is why I pay a visit here every fall and winter for wine, cheese and chocolate weekend. The interior is all wood and has a beautiful cabin-like feel. One can find all things wine here. The gifts placed all over the room are nice touches if your looking for a gift. The Vignoles wine is my favorite here. It has a sweet, almost grapefruited, flavor to it. This is going to be a 2 part review. A. I volunteered there for a GREAT fundraiser "Community Thread". Our salary/tips went to support this great Stillwater area cause. The directions and job were FANTASTIC. We poured wine for tastings, stocked wine bottles, and made sure the tasting area was in tip-top condition. It was 5+ hours of fun on a crappy snowy (yes, snow in October) Saturday! B. The winery. The tasting room is spacious and comfortable. The bar area is a place to get a glass of wine or a mulled wine (yum on a cold day) and mill around with the beautiful artwork. The wine is VERY good. (Many wineries have 19$ bottles of wine that taste worse than the Boones Farm crap we drank in high school.) BUT this is really good! And I mean delicious. Every flavor palate. The Red Summer was one of my favorites, and I'm not really a red drinker. The white Seyval was also a delicious wine - I called it.. a bottle-drink (cuz one glass just wouldn't be good enough). Overall - take some friends, do the tasting, buy a bottle for home, and grab a drink in the bar area. You won't be disappointed! read more

My best friend, mom, and I came to Stillwater to do some apple picking, eat delicious baked apple goods, and taste some wine - which we were able to do all of this in one trip and without leaving the area because the vineyard is connected to the apple farm, AWESOME! This was my first ever wine tasting! I'm not sure how much it usually costs but I thought it was a good deal - $6 to taste five of their best wines. If you check in on Yelp, it's buy one get one free! The guy who poured our wine explained in detail each one to us before tasting. He told us what kind of wine it was(red or white), what the distinct notes were, what it would be good paired with, etc. There was also a sheet listed with the names and descriptions in case we wanted more info. I definitely didn't know that there was a dump bucket for a reason because you weren't supposed to finish each glass they give you... so I may or may not have been drunk leaving the vineyard. We went on a tour and tasting at the vineyard last weekend for a bachelorette party. It was much more fun that I was expecting. We got a glass of wine to start the tour out, and were brought outside to walk the grounds and see the vines. We then got to see the indoor area where they make and bottle the wine. The tour part was a little boring for me- I am more of a wine drinker than a wine connoisseur. However, everyone else seemed to really enjoy it! After the tour was done, we got to taste several more wines, all of which were delicious. Our guide, Joe, was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Plus, he put up with a giant group of loud women for over an hour so, props to you Joe! I would definitely do this again in the future and absolutely recommend it! Thank you! read more

We visited Saint Croix (SC) today after hearing much about it, and being wine lovers, like supporting Minnesota's growing wine industry. Not strangers to vineyards, we've been to the Central Coast, Napa, and Willamette Valley several times, as well as many very nice vineyards here in the midwest. We found the tasting process at SC to be both inflexible and overpriced, and the service terrible -- even though my wife and I were the only party in the tasting room. There are two options for tasting at SC. The first is a flight of four 2 ounce samples. You can get a flight of white only, red only, or ports. When I asked if we could choose what we wanted in a flight the server very matter of factly informed us, "The menu is set." Period. Other vineyards either let you choose what you want to sample or at least have a mix of types in a preset flight so that you are not forced to purchase multiple flights to have more than one type of wine. A flight at SC, regardless of type, is $14. So, if you want to sample at least a red and a white from this vineyard it's going to run you $28 before you buy any bottle. You can buy a glass for $8. We didn't choose to do a glass because we wanted to see what the varieties were like at this vineyard. We chose to start with a white flight and I asked the server to start a tab, anticipating that we'd like to sample more than just a white. We liked one of the four and were planning to buy a bottle and proceed to the red or port flight. When I asked if you received any credit back on the $14 flight if you bought a bottle, our server responded with a flat, "Nope." That was the last straw. First, I felt that the inflexible flights were a transparent gimmick to make excessive profit from a tasting. If I would have bought that one bottle of white in effect I would have paid $14 + $17 or about $31 for a bottle of wine equivalent in quality to a well chosen $9 bottle of wine at any liquor store. Normally, I'd happily pay $17 for a bottle to support a local vineyard, but not when I'm being soaked for tasting wines most of which were very unremarkable. I've normally paid far less for a tasting, had more flexibility in choosing what I wanted to taste, and received far better service than I received at Saint Croix. I would have likely bought at least a couple of bottles on my visit if SC wasn't so aggressive in making money off of tasting regardless of whether or not a bottle was bought. For example, Villa Bellleza vineyard in Pepin, which is far nicer than SC charges $5 for tasting of three wines of your choice. Tasting for TWO is complimentary with the purchase of four bottles. Other local vineyards, like Danzinger in Alma, Wisconsin offer more flexibility and/or discounts when you purchase a bottle. They will also treat you a lot better. Minnesota and Wisconsin vineyards need our support, however, Saint Croix has forfeited my support because of their poor service, inflexible and expensive tasting. Go to one of the many other vineyards in Minnesota and Wisconsin that will welcome you with enthusiasm for their wine and the desire to encourage you to buy it without taking advantage of your interest. read more

We stopped in for a tasting and had some good wines and good service. I would recommend the Marquette and the Frontenac for wine drinkers; both were very good and reasonably priced. I didn't care for the whites as much, but sweet wine lovers will be happy. I wish they would expand the patio so there's more outdoor space- especially in such a pretty surrounding. But overall we had a good experience, and we'll be back. The only drawback was the constant stream of bachelorette parties. The ultimate spot to hit in the fall. Just a short drive out of the cities, this winery is a hot spot. It's and old barn-turned-tasting room, on the property of an apple orchard, so you could come spend a whole afternoon exploring the grounds. For $6 you can get a tasting of about 5 wines--a great deal! The bottles were also a great deal--none were more than $20. Overall, the wines were pretty sweet, which seems to be the norm for Midwestern wineries who are trying to attract the locals. It was pretty packed on a Saturday afternoon in October--we could barely find a place at the bar. Overall, fun atmosphere and such an adorable setting for an autumn outing! read more

St. Croix Vineyards is totally cute. My boyfriend and I went here a few weekends ago on a beautiful pre-fall afternoon in September when they were having their annual Grape Stomp Festival. There was a live funk band playing and a bunch of people (families, young couples, groups of friends) laying out in the sun eating picnics and sipping wine that was being sold for $5 a glass. With the grape vines and a small petting zoo in the back, it was very picturesque. We went on a free wine tour, which was really informative and cool to see how everything is done. There's also an apple orchard connected to the winery, so you can go apple-picking and get delicious baked apple goods and drinks. This is a great, affordable, weekend afternoon outing. read more

I stopped by the St. Croix Vineyard this weekend for their Art Fair and a few glasses of wine. The art fair was small, but still had a nice selection of handmade jewelry and art. Plus they were serving glasses of wine for $5 and I had a buy-one-get-one coupon, so you can't really go wrong. The first time I went to the St. Croix Vineyard was last Halloween for their wine tasting where the employees were dressed in costume. This was a great event and a great way to sample a lot of their wine. Plus we got a free tour of the vineyard. My favorite wines are the Seyval and the Summer Red, which is a unique and fruity red that tastes great chilled. This is a great winery to visit that is close to the cities and it also has an apple orchard attached so you can pick your own apples in the fall! read more

This was the first Minnesota Vineyard I've been to and I have to say that it exceeded my expectations. Whatever misconceptions people have about Minnesota wines could disappear if you visit Saint Croix Vineyards and their tasting room. The wine prices are reasonable (many around $12 a bottle) and the wine is of surprising quality. The owner, Peter Hemsted, knows Minnesota grapes and the winery features a wonderful variety of the wines produced here. There is a free tour at 1pm, which is incredibly interesting and led by the General Manager or Owner, so it is informative and personal. There is $5 wine tasting, which includes 10 wines and the $5 can go toward a wine purchase if you find one you like. What a beautiful and unique way to spend an afternoon. Perhaps seen as competition to Northern Vineyards Winery, St. Croix Vineyards stands well above. They were established in 1992 and have created several award-winning wines, and along with it a good reputation. You'll be missing out if you don't take advantage of their $5 10 individual wine tasting. What's even better is if you buy 2 bottles of wine, your $5 for the tasting goes towards your purchase! Cha-ching! I agree, it's a great gimmick. While their Reisling is fair, I recommend you try their Seyval, Summer Red and popular Raspberry Infusion dessert wine that is perfectly decadent with a piece of dark chocolate (if only it weren't Hersheys!). You'll hear all about the Frontanec wine and how the grapes were a creation of UM. Kind of a neat story. If you are going to make a day of wine tasting, check out the Three Rivers Wine Trail of Minnesota. By visiting 5 of the participating wineries (~3 hours apart by car) and getting a stamp at each, you earn a glass of wine on the house! Can't beat that (but be sure to have a D.D. if you're like myself...). If that's a little too much, take on the 1 pm vineyard tour given by the General Manager or owner them self. Stopped here on a whim on our way home. The winery was incredibly busy and you could tell the wine tasting bar had too many people trying to be served at once. Even the bar tender was a little snappy but then apologetic the next moment. They really didn't explain the wines to us as we went but we've been to enough wine tastings that there wine sheet was enough for us. The pours were really heavy so you end up with almost 2 glasses by the time you are done. I wasn't too fond of the Reds but the whites were good. The cashier was no where to be found when we went to check out. Stood there for at least 10 minutes waiting. The owner or manager finally noticed and got someone to check us out. And gave us a free bottle opener! We will most likely come back since this winery is so convenient to our house. Just not during an event. Too many people and not enough staff. read more

This was probably my favorite stop of the weekend. The staff was very friendly, which both my wife and I noted as almost every other place we went in Stillwater the people were extremely rude. But back to St. Croix Vineyards... The wine was actually pretty good, they did a great job of explaining the differences in each wine in a very relaxed atmosphere. We bought quite a few bottles, and used them as gifts. It's nice to buy local products. Plus, there is an apple orchard right there! Who doesn't love fresh apples!? This is a place I want to go back to, and take my daughters, I think it has something to offer both adults and the breed in one fun little stop. Minnesota wine... let's level set expectations that this is not California or Bordeaux, but that being said I was pleasantly surprised with St Croix. The $6 wine tasting (or 4 for $20) makes it an awesome and affordable day trip. The vineyard has an awesome orchard and fun samples of fudge, apples and baked goods. I stopped by with a few girlfriends and can't wait to bring my fiance back. Highly recommend stopping by here on a Saturday and then continuing to Stillwater for dinner and more drinks. The wines were served by a mother doing a fundraiser for a daughter's club so it was hard to get very detailed information. So out on the graceful rolling hills of.. Lake Elmo/Stillwater, sits this incredible family fun center - St. Croix Vineyards/Aamodts Apple Orchard. When you first pull up, on that crisp fall day, you're not sure what to expect. Apples, wine, more wine & kettle corn? Yep Kettle corn. You're sense of smell is engulfed with the sweet smell as you first get out of your vehicle. It almost draws you to the big black kettle like a fish on a hook. For a second you almost forget why you're there - WINE!!! But as you head towards the tasting room you realize that this is more than just wine... I'll get back to that. Inside the tasting room, the dark wood, high vaulted, barn style ceiling invites you to the laughter of those sampling their spectacular wines! Skip it all and just get the Port - trust me. Awesome! But the servers are very eager to teach you about their passion of describing the wines with associations of nuttyness and crisp, delightful blends of apples & peach infused vino. A very giving amount of samples, and a really good warm fuzzy feeling inside for a mere $10 for the 2 of you. (Jeez. Who's up for round 2!?) After the glossy-eyed awakening gets you feeling like this was the best day ever. You stagger back through the tasting room on your way to the door, but not before burning a hole in my Citibank card, after I decide that I WANT to feel that warm fuzzy feeling later at home with the 10 bottles I just bought. I heard from some other people that this was a great winery. I think not. They are busting with people on a nice Saturday afternoon because it is also connected to an apple orchard and well.....it is that time of year. The tasting is 6 dollars and I had a check in offer for bogo so I took advantage of that thank goodness so at least i did not give them too much money for this shitty experience. None of the wines were any good and they all had a horrid after taste of mineral bitter left over on your palate. The curly haired girl working the counter needs to lighten up and find some inner happiness because she just was not very pleasant and if you cannot find a reason to smile pouring wine on a fabulous fall day and chatting with people you should get yourself another job! She literally chased us out to the parking lot to get the two glasses we had in our hands because every other winery I've been to gives you the glass with the purchase or your tasting.
