Rustic Roots Winery is such a hidden gem just outside the Twin Cities and absolutely worth the day trip! The vineyard landscape is BEAUTIFUL and makes for the perfect relaxing night or afternoon. The refreshing white wine pictured was delicious and perfect for a warm day outside. The flatbread was exactly what you'd expect for a light winery snack, but super reasonably priced which I appreciate! Definitely bring a DD so you can take advantage of their awesome bottle pricing instead of just ordering by the glass! Their social media is also worth checking out because they host so many fun events like yoga, concerts, private events, and more. Such a peaceful atmosphere with great vibes all around. An absolutely gorgeous vineyard located within the St Croix Valley located in Scandia. Upon entering the gates of the winery, it transports you to wine country with rolling hills and vineyards for days. I went on a Sunday around 1pm and it was very chill with plenty of seating options under a pergola, picnic tables by the vines, etc. lots of different choices as well as inside by the bar. There are 2 bars on property, 1 inside and 1 by the events center. I'm assuming you can rent the place out for weddings and currently they are under construction in the parking lot. I ordered a caprese salad with chicken. It was just okay. It came in a chipotle "like" bowl and the chicken was minced. The menu said thick slices of heirloom tomatoes but they ended up being cherry tomatoes and the mozzarella was light on the portion. More salad than anything else and was drizzled with balsamic. I don't think it was worth $19 but if I'm paying for convenience, I get it. Just let your customers know that it's cherry tomatoes and not heirloom tomatoes when they are ordering. This is how the menu item reads: Thick slices of heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil, and torn mozzarella on top of greens, dressed with balsamic glaze. I opted for a non alcoholic beverage - root beer which was delightful but next time I'm getting the rose. The staff is friendly and helpful. I always have so much fun coming here and it's definitely a hidden gem! The outdoor space is beautiful and it's perfect to come grab drinks and dinner during the summer months. They have both indoor and outdoor seating where you can order from inside or at the grill food truck that serves burgers. I loved how they had a black bean patty to substitute with on the menu, and since I'm vegan they luckily told me the fries are cooked in beef tallow before I ordered them! They were so nice and let me check ingredients on one of the sauces and gave me chips instead since I couldn't eat the fries. I also love trying their wine slushy since it's usually a new flavor each year I believe. I got the Hawaiian flavor that was a beautiful blue color with some coconut and Hawaiian Punch flavoring. Rustic roots was absolutely gorgeous!!! The drive was scenic and less than an hour from the twin cities. When you arrive, there is ample parking up the winding road, and the slight elevation provides a great vantage to look out at the surrounding hills. There are several spots to sip wine, both inside and outside. There is capacity for large events with many-sectioned outdoor bar and an entire tent in the back. MN wine is no my favorite in general, but I really enjoyed the wine slushies on a hot day. Worth visiting to drink and eat and enjoy the scenery!! PS. Fun winery! We came in on a Wednesday evening, before their cribbage event (which was super popular, but we didn't partake). It was snowing and cold out, and they had a fire going along with a very inviting environment. We tried several wines, and got some food as well. The wines were ok, some of the reds were a bit sweet, but good variety and selection. The cold sandwiches were good, really big portions for the full sandwiches. Seemed very family friendly, we were there with our baby and felt welcome. They have what appears to be a really pretty, large outdoor space, which we'll be back to check out in the summer. Absolutely enjoyed this winery! It was beautiful. From the entrance alone, it was quite exquisite. I had a wine flight and it was awesome for the price! Also tried the flat breads (margarita, fig and prosciutto and the carnivore) all three were delicious (just a little smaller than expected! There was live music when we were there so it was so peaceful and relaxing! Pretty amazing service, lots of space to explore and it didn't feel crowded. We reserved a table inside but ended up finding one outdoors, the wine line inside was horribly long and I'd rather be outside in a line than in. Still the line took forever to get through, they needed more staff! When we got to the window though the lady was super nice and let us taste test before we ordered a carafe. I knew I wanted the mango slushie ($9) so I got that and it was pretty good, not overly sweet and you couldn't taste any alcohol. They need more tables with shade! Also absolutely zero to no vegan items on the menu (hummus and salad). read more

This place was very fun; kind of spread out between the indoor bar, outdoor areas to order food, tables, and areas to play lawn games. Definitely a nice spot to hang out and enjoy a beautiful MN summer day. The wine slushy was amazing and the food was good too. It did close fairly early which was surprising and we were kindly asked along with everyone else still there to leave. That was somewhat off putting. What a beautiful space, just north of Stillwater. The outdoor seating is expansive and you can wander the grounds (and vines) with a beautiful view of the river valley. A gathering of girl friends brought me here last Friday night. It was my first winery outing, and from what my friends have told me, this place is not typical. So you've set a high standard. It's set off hwy 95, so you don't hear the sound of traffic from the road. It's quiet and serene. The only noise is from people chatting or, if on the patio, a water feature. The landscape is gorgeous. From the planted flowers, the brick papers, the modern facilities. The vineyard looks mature, so thick tall trees/ vines that are nearly manicured. Looking to the south, you'll see tree tops from the far of hills. There was a taco food truck but they do offer a limited food menu. Also pre-packaged snacks like pretzels and nuts. The offer a single glass of wine or a fleight. My friend heard that if you purchased 3 bottles of wine then you got a fleight for free. They also offer wine slushies, and for kids: root beer. One of the outbuildings has a merchandise store. Items to purchase include tank tops, t-shirts, sweatshirts, linen lounge, wine glasses and wine bottle accessories. I enjoyed a glass of Sangria slushy with a wine topper. The topper is extra but made it easier to drink through the straw. That was my favorite. For my second round, I split a fleight with friends. I wanted to try the rosé slushy...sangria was better. And I finished with a cider. That was tasty. I like cider beers but this was lighter and didn't have the lingering aftertaste. I saw large groups here for Bachelorette and birthday parties. The couple next to us was celebrating their anniversary. I hope to come back again for any such gathering. read more

I am very torn on Rustic Roots - I love their grounds, beautiful ambiance and location. Their artwork is stunning too. However, as a wine snob, I did not enjoy their wines. But it's also awfully unfair to compare Italian or French wines to Minnesota. So here's what I recommend - go and enjoy yourself. Support a local vinter, they work so incredibly hard. And if you a a pain in the neck wine snob like me, just get a beer - they have Loon Juice on tap, and it's great. read more

We were out in the area and a pumpkin patch and decided to stop by for a glass of wine. My sister had been here before and wanted me to check it out. When we first drove up it was really nice but VERY busy. A lot of people everywhere. They had a food truck on site - the line was pretty long so I actually never seen what truck it was or what kind of food they had. I think there was another place to order food as well around the back of the building if I remember correctly. The lines to order wine were very long.. all of them inside and outside. There was a lot of of places to site around the winery outdoors, some covered areas, patios connected to the building, looked like limited seating inside as well as tables out in the open or you could bring a chair or blanket and sit on the ground. It felt like every party no matter how big or small was about a 20 minute or so interaction at the register. When we got to the front we already knew what we wanted and it was about 5 minutes. With how long the lines were I wish they had an express lane for people who knew/know what they want. We ended up getting the Roots Rose slushy (Frose), It was really good, not super sweet but sweet enough for me!! I like that the grapevines were open to explore a bit. The atmosphere is super chill! The landscape is absolutely stunning driving up the hills with all the land and vineyards. Then you come up to this beautiful building, production site, tons of seating with food trucks and flowers everywhere and beautiful landscaping. Also tons of room for yard games. They have both indoor and outdoor seating with large and small tables and canopies and umbrellas. They even have music on the weekends which just enhances the already chill vibe. I have tried their white wine flight that I really enjoyed but my favorite was the wine slushies. Different flavors to choose from but my favorite was the frose and sangria! My kids loved the root beer floats and playing hide and seek in the vineyards and running around the huge property. There are also different food trucks that come depending on weekend/season but I personally love the brick oven pizzas from the winery itself! Still have a lot of wine to try but so far have been so impressed and shocked this is in Scandia, MN. Only 15 min away from Stillwater or Forest lake! read more

Had a great afternoon at Rustic Roots Winery with friends today. We came for the live music and it was so melodic and chill, it was an absolute vibe. The winery itself is nice, lots of grapevines surrounding the main part of the complex. There are food trucks onsite and I highly recommend the frosè, seriously the best summer drink ever and will keep you cool in the heat. Awesome place. So beautiful and so many different areas to choose to sit. They have several areas to order food from as well as drinks. They have what looked like a permanent food truck or grill area as well as a menu from inside kitchen and also just snacks. They even had a kid selling hotdogs. They had a cute store and the wines I tried were good. There was a band there called "The Flannel Brothers" and we stuck around for a few songs and they were good. My only critique is the charcuterie tray. It's really not. It's a bag of trail mix, a box of rice crackers (I think) one cheese wedge and a marginal meat or salami but it was not good. You have to cut everything your self as it all comes in packages. Other than that, super awesome place. Definitely will go back!! Oh, and for all the non winos, they also have beer. read more

Very engaging hosts, which is one of the key facets of a successful winery -- wine and experience. Their wines are phenomenal, they do some wonderful things with our Midwest grapes. We came here for the hiking, really... Our group had an early morning (before the winery opened) hike scheduled. One of the staff (and his adorable daughter) welcomed us to the RRW and showed us the hiking trails. We hiked through the woods, following the trail signs to end up back the winery. After our hike, we enjoyed their gourmet flatbread and hummus & pita out under the pergola. I really enjoyed the fig/goat cheese/chili flake flatbread ($15), while my hiking partner enjoyed the housemate Italian sausage/mushroom/kale pizza flatbread ($15). We enjoyed a sampling of various wines and a local (Lift Bridge) brew. I will be back for more hiking with different friends next time! I want to try what they had in the slushy machines! read more

My mom and I came here to celebrate her birthday in December and we both split 2 wine tastings. We couldn't believe how many wines from the tastings were our new favorites and ended up buying 6 bottles to bring home! We also enjoyed a delicious homemade chicken flatbread and played a game from their board game selection corner. The service was friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable. What a find! A lovely setting, beautiful building, and excellent wines. As walk-ins on a Saturday we were told there were no inside tables, but there was a large building that was enclosed and heated where we could take our wine tasting and food we ordered and it worked out great. I can't wait to come back in the warmer weather and sit out on the patio to enjoy the beautiful view from their location up on a hill looking towards the St Croix River. The charcuterie board was good and the flatbread pizza was very good. I appreciate that we were able to choose our own wines for tasting rather than the preset tastings so many wineries have gone to. Beautiful location, friendly employees, delicious wine, but very disappointed in the food. One of the things we've traditionally liked about this winery was their food menu. Nice selection of good food. We drove an hour today with our taste buds all set only to find out they cut MOST of their menu & did not update it on their website. We looked at the menu on our way so we'd be ready to order when we got there as we were already hungry. And the food truck only had two items- cheeseburger or sausage. If you're going to cut most of your menu at least update your website. We would have eaten somewhere else and still made a visit after. We ended up not staying as long or drinking much wine because of the sparse food selection. read more

Finally got a chance to visit this winery with a friend during the week. The vibe here is so cute the road into the winery is beautiful. I hear that it is a little bit busier on the weekends and they also have events on Facebook. We had wine slushy's which were absolutely amazing. There are two different flavors to choose from. Then we each got a wine flight which we were able to pick I believe five different wines. Those came in itty-bitty Jell-O shot sized cups. The food here is pretty on point I really recommend the fig flatbread. The charcuterie plate left a little to be desired. They really could do a lot better with the charcuterie. You get one type of meat a salami. Then three cubed cheeses. It looks like you're getting four different types of cheese but two of them were the same in the photo that I posted. The crackers that were served were a flatbread cracker which made it a little difficult to put cheese cubes onto. The nuts on the cheese plate are excellent and so are the olives. The strawberry salad was delicious. The wine here is pretty good. Wine is such a preference so I hate reviewing it some of them were too sweet and some of them I loved. I highly recommend this place. Wow!! We were not prepared for the amazing time we had visiting this winery. We were with a group of 10 or so for a birthday, and we sat outside on their absolutely lovely and expansive patio overlooking the gorgeous vineyard. With the bluffs of the St. Croix rising up behind the vineyard, we all agreed we could very easily imagine we were at a winery in Napa Valley or even better, the more laid back Santa Cruz, CA. And the wines were just as much of a pleasant surprise. OMG so delicious! Literally the best Minnesota wines we have ever had, and would definitely be a contender for best we've had from the Midwest. Group faves were the Marquette, the Triple Root Red Blend, the Grenache, and the Oaked Frontenac Blanc. We probably had 6-8 bottles on the table in the 3 hours we stayed. We also had kids with us, and they enjoyed the food and playing behind us in the beautiful setting. The food was good, but next time we go I will probably bring a picnic in, because we found it very expensive for what it was. The food truck (an Airstream trailer!) was not open, but we got charcuterie and cheese plates as well as various other offerings and some small pizzas, which we found a bit greasy. But these are nit picky things hardly worth mentioning in a story about one of the most beautiful evenings we spent all summer, in an idyllic setting, which felt like a vacation in paradise. read more

Great place for large or small groups! Inside can hold a significant amount of people at tables, high tops, and standing. While I was there in late spring they had a tent set up that was very large with several tables inside. Beautiful views on the vineyard, and open land. They have delicious flatbreads that go well with their roots red wine! Friendly staff that is very tentative. I recommend calling ahead for larger groups. Parking lot on site. read more
